In other words, familiarity and comfort with what a given diving task demands requires repeated exposure to those demands. Once a diver develops a solid foundation of diving skills, s/he should then pursue an active diving regimen that will progressively build upon these skills. Too many divers and diving educators undervalue the process of gaining experience outside course training. Dive training is essential in the process of creating a good foundation, but only diving experience can build the skills and awareness that create a good diver. www.extreme-exposure.com N e w s l e tt e r JUST ARRIVED AND GOING FAST! To participate, please contact [email protected] Our planet is 4.6 billion years old. element in the universe. (Photo courtesy During this time, an enormous amount of NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage Team [STScI/AURA]) of helium has been produced by radioactive decay. Unfortunately, most of this helium has been lost to space. However, as radioactive isotopes decay deep within the Earth’s crust, some of the helium atoms become trapped within the same geological formations that trap hydrocarbons, especially natural gas. When gas companies drill into these formations, natural gas rushes to the surface due to the enormous pressure of the overlying rock. Any helium trapped along with the natural gas in these formations also rushes to the surface. The helium we use during our diving activities is captured as a byproduct of oil and natural gas production. Unless the helium is captured during the drilling process, it is lost to the atmosphere and eventually to space. So, we have traced helium’s long, strange trip. It has taken 4.6 billion years for the agonizingly slow radioactive decay of uranium and thorium to produce the helium found on Earth. Once we consume Earth’s helium, it is gone forever. For technical divers, helium is irreplaceable due to the combination of its very small size and its inert chemical nature. Without helium, exploring the depths of our watery planet via scuba becomes much less safe. For now, it appears helium Local Dive Site supplies worldwide are sufficient and are currently untapped in many countries. Conditions Unfortunately for Americans, helium supplies may have peaked, meaning that in Ginnie Springs: High flow; the not-too- distant future, America may good visibility have to import helium. Helium prices Little River: Flooded are now on the rise and if this continues, Peacock: Flooded we may now be in the golden age of Manatee Spring: Flooded deep water exploration by recreational Madison Blue: Flooded divers. With a greater knowledge of how (should reopen on May 9) helium naturally occurs and its inherently Jackson Blue: Moderate flow; limited availability on Earth, it is my Good visibility hope that the technical diving community will develop and initiate policies and Troy Springs: Flooded procedures for its conservation. At the very least, we should be strong advocates for the production of this valuable resource by governments and oil and gas companies. July 1-8, 2009 Join us on a weeklong dive trip to Bonaire!
