The Chopper Institute of America has completed all the
revisions for the “Chopper Fundamentals 101” textbook
course, endorsed by the IMBBA. It is available to order
and is also available online. For those who order the
book and complete the course, The Chopper Institute
sends out passing grade notifications and a certificate of
completion. The IMBBA is then notified and enters the
certification points in the member’s portfolio. This
course is a valuable step towards certification for those
who need additional certification points and it is
recommended by the IMBBA. The Course covers, stepby-step, A-Z designing, finding the right fit and building a
custom motorcycle “from the ground up,” including all
aspects of motorcycle parts and theories of operation.

IMBBA SPEARHEADS EDUCATION AND TRAINING
IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY
Jacksonville, FL – The International Master Bike Builders Association, with the support of
many bike builders and industry professionals, is pleased to announce the availability of a
textbook course that is recommended and endorsed by the IMBBA.
“We intend to leave the motorcycle industry in better shape than we found it,” said Jeff
Starke, founding president of the IMBBA. “Chopper Fundamentals 101” by Doug Hall, the
Chopper Institute of America and Aurora Engineering was methodically reviewed by our
Board of Master Bike Builders and we are completely satisfied with the final revisions. We
believe they are committed to publishing the most articulate and accurate information on
bike building.

“We have already launched plans for a one-day bike build at the 70th Anniversary Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally to raise funds to put this textbook in the hands of high school bike building
classes as part of our efforts to promote bike building excellence through certified education
and training.”
“Motorcycle Fundamentals 101” and “Chopper Fundamentals 101” by Doug Hill and his
collaborators are both available at Amazon.com for high school students and individuals
interested in learning “the trade and not just the tricks of the trade.”
The IMBBA hopes to work in developing a complete series of textbooks for the industry,
especially the youngest builders that will shape the future of bike building. “Information is
powerful, and should not be kept locked up,” said Starke. “We should try to leave books on
every subject covering aftermarket products and the proper ways to repair and customize
motorcycles for the young people in our industry who will become our future motorcycle
designers, builders and fabricators.”
IMBBA currently helps three high school programs – one in Canada and two in the USA – that
are lead by “visionary bike builders and motorcycle instructors” Steve Jones at Eden High
School’s Chopper Class in Western New York; Marc Mazorolle at Bernice McNaughton High
School’s Bike Club in New Brunswick, Canada; and Kevin “Teach” Baas at Kennedy High
School’s Chopper Class in Bloomington, Minnesota. They also help Darin Maltsberger, who is
the Power Sports Department head at Mitchell Tech Institute.
These instructors recently became IMBBA Certified Motorcycle Instructors and will be using
IMBBA educational materials in their next semester classes. To this end, the IMBBA is
working to raise funds to help equip the schools and provide industry professionals to
mentor with the students and teach professional skills.
In the opening week of the 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, August 11th at the Broken
Spoke Saloon in downtown Sturgis, SD. Sponsors for this project are S&S Cycle, ACCEL
Motorcycle Parts and the Ruben Brown Foundation.
Former Chicago NFL football player, Ruben Brown will join Jay Allen of the Broken Spoke
Saloon and MC “Radical Randy” Aker on stage to witness this amazing one-day bike build
Each of the high school girls won a spot on the team by writing an essay about the
importance of motorcycles in their lives.
The Ruben Brown Foundation helped the Eden High School students with their 7-month
build of a 1942 Flathead that won the People’s Choice Award at the 2009 Chopper Class
Challenge at the Donnie Smith Bike Show in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Ultima Custom built on stage at the 70th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally by these high school
students will be on display during Biketoberfest 2010.

TANK SIGNED BY TOP BIKE BUILDERS
The parts list is being created but the bike’s gas tank was clear coated with the S&S and
ACCEL sponsor logos in time for Vulcan Bike Week in the magical city of Birmingham,
Alabama. Top Master Bike Builders, who believe in helping students succeed, are adding
their signatures to the gas tank to boost raffle ticket donations and to ensure a higher bike
value. The magic ticket holder will win a beautiful custom bike that is a piece of motorcycle
history, signed by Dave Perewitz, Donnie Smith, Jim Nasi, Ron Finch, Mondo Porras, Bob
McKay, Lee Wimmer, Steve Broyles Jr., Paul Yaffe, Doug Keim and others.

This year, the International Master Bike Builders Association worked to overcome language
barriers, time zones and various technology barriers to bring everyone together first as
riders, then as enthusiasts and ultimately as individuals who share a passion for bike
building. Our goal was and is to become united as Motorcycle Students, Technicians, Bike
Builders, Fabricators, Designers, Engineers and Master Bike Builders. IMBBA recognizes and
appreciates the cooperation, patience and efforts made by so many people all over the
world who embrace the need for IMBBA certification and judging standards. IMBBA’s vision
and realization holds true. “Craftsmanship comes from the heart not just the parts”

JACK MCINTYRE NAMED AS OFFICIAL IMBBA PHOTOGRAPHER
Jack McIntyre, with a studio In the Boston area, has become the official photographer for
the IMBBA. Jack comes with years of biking and events experience and his photography is
some of the best in the industry.
He will be traveling with us to all IMBBA events to provide quality
photographs of bike builders and their bikes at events hosted
and/or judged by the IMBBA. We feel it is important that we
have quality images to share with the public and industry media
that depict the role our judges play in presenting a quality bike
show event. IMBBA is often preoccupied with bikes to be judged
and unavailable to capture the best activities, people and bikes
outside the show. Jack’s keen eye with a camera will ensure that
we are able to share much more of what goes on at IMBBA
events with our members and the general public.
We will also utilize Jack’s images in the IMBBA newsletter that
currently has almost as many pages as some digital and print magazines.

Presidents Message:
The second quarter has been even busier than the first. The high school bike builders have
been getting chopper building experience, competing at the Donnie Smith Invitational, and
they’ve had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the top of the pile of bike building talents.
I was pleased to see builders offering parts and pieces,
expertise and training. To mention a few: Lee Wimmer,
Cool Products, Guilty Customs and the list goes on. I am
encouraged in our down economy to see everyone
getting together and networking to establish a stronger
industry. This sense of solidarity fuels IMBBA to jump in
with both feet. We just relocated to Jacksonville, Florida
from Union Grove, Wisconsin. We hope this big move will
be a logistically good move for the IMBBA.
This year has also seen a rise in bike shows and events. IMBBA is pleased to include “Good
Times MC Radical Randy” Akers to help us on stage at events. His stage personality really
brightens up the crowd at our motorcycle events. We now have Randy in place as master of
ceremony all of our events, along with the addition of a professional photographer to
capture images as our events and a professional publicist to share the images and details
with the media, our members and bike show fans.
Jack McIntyre has become our official staff photographer and IMBBA Photography Director.
Look for his images of Vulcan Bike Week (June 30 to July 3) as he begins traveling with our
judges to IMBBA events. He has a good working relationship with our new publicist and
IMBBA Marketing Director, MJ Reynolds. Together, they will produce news articles,
newsletters and press releases that showcase IMBBA activities and events. MJ has become
editor of the quarterly IMBBA Newsletter, which she will help us transition into an
International Master Bike Builder’s Magazine that is published and distributed quarterly.
We are also pleased to have onboard former Chicago NFL player, Ruben Brown and the
Ruben Brown Foundation as a sponsor of our Sturgis one-day bike build to fund high school
bike building programs. Ruben is active in the motorcycle community with his annual Ruben
Brown Ride and this year’s “Cruisin’ the Blues Highway,” a charity ride from Chicago to the
Memphis Blues Awards. He has helped the Eden High School bike builders in the past with
bike builds and will be handling the travel expenses associated with bringing the Eden High
School bike builder, her family and teacher to Sturgis. S&S Cycle and ACCEL Motorcycle Parts
are also sponsoring the Sturgis bike build.
I would also like to mention the help we are getting from Brenda Lawson, who manages the
Dan Lawson Band. Brenda has secured a series of (free) Canadian radio interviews that will
follow the IMBBA on the Road to Sturgis for the Hall of Fame and Chopper bike build with
our high school students. I was interviewed about the IMBBA point judging system and our
INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
PAGE 18
mission to promote bike building excellence through education and training. There is a link
to the interview on the home page of the IMBBA website. Our photographer, Jack McIntyre
and editor/publicist MJ Reynolds will be interviewed. Jay Allen of the Broken Spoke Saloon
will also be interviewed on behalf of the upcoming Sturgis events. She is a real team player
when it comes to spreading the word on FACEBOOK about IMBBA activities and events. She
and MJ often post and repost upcoming events to their huge following of loyal music loving,
event fans. Together, they reach more than 5,000 motorcycle fans that follow their posts on
FACEBOOK. MJ also promotes the IMBBA by way of her blog posts on FACEBOOK, TWITTER,
STUMBLEUPON, DIGG, DELICIOUS, GOOGLE and YOUTUBE. We look forward to sharing the
stage with the Dan Lawson Band at more IMBBA events in the future and appreciate the help
in promoting the IMBBA.
Then our total focus will turn to getting ready for the World Cup Competition in 2012!
One sad note: Powersports International after 30 years in the industry has closed its doors
forever. They will be missed. While the economy slings arrows at the industry, we must
continue our efforts to become a professional voice within the industry by aiming our arrow
at education and training at the center of the industry target. This is our opportunity to
become ready to provide the right kind of energy when the motorcycle industry is ready to
move back into high gear.
There are pockets of professionals that have band together within the industry to
accomplish common goals. I want to encourage them to reach out and network with us,
share knowledge and allow us to give back, especially to the youth in need of talented
influences within the industry. IMBBA is here to promote bike building excellence through
education and training and professional mentoring. Thanks Everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS! CHARLIE HADAYIA JR.,
CERTIFIED IMBBA BIKE JUDGE
Charlie, studies a bike at the
House of Harley Bike show in Milwaukee, WI.
Part of his apprentice training before becoming
certified.
Charlie, receives from IMBBA president at the Hal’s
HarleyDavidson, Milw. WI. Bike show his first dollar
bill, a tradition in IMBBA when becoming
“Judge” certified. “ Biggest trick in our trade, is getting
paid for what we do!” said Jeff Starke.
Charlie Hadayia Jr., of S&S Cycle completed his training for Motorcycle Bike Judge after two
consecutive bike shows in the month of May, 2010, Charlie, brings to IMBBA wealth of
knowledge and experience in all aspects of bike building. While, Charlie has been no stranger
to judging bike shows before, he now has the certification to apply to his many skills and
talents when judging bikes the IMBBA way! Completing the judges course and training is
important, a judge remembers when they get paid for what they do. Signified by the earning
of his first dollar presented by IMBBA at the Hal’s Hot Rod and Custom Bike Show held over
Memorial Day weekend. Welcome Aboard Charlie!

In an effort to help builders, mechanics, and general novices in assembly work of parts and
accessories and to identify the really overlooked electrical assemblies and connections to
what judges look for especially in a close scored bike competition. Did you know that it can
come down to electrical connectors and their preparation?
Wiring and the method by which the assembler,
mechanic, bike builder applied the known trade of SAE/Metric
hardware’s. For example, when judging a motorcycle build,
judges look for consistency in assembly. Meaning, say looking
under gas tanks on a custom build judges often find that the
locknuts, (nuts Electrical Assemblies and connecting to and
from components seemly gets overlooked by many builders. in
some case, the builder uses someone else to wire after building
the bike, when this occurs, wiring shows up on surfaces that
either tie wraps or electrical tape, or other means to hold wires
to fame and or other parts of the motorcycle. It quickly
becomes obvious to judges that it was a final after thought rather a compliment to the entire
composition of the bike, restoration, or design.
IMBBA’s posture is Fit, Form, Function, and safety. When it comes to components on the
bike the components must be restrained in accordance to standard electrical guidelines.
When this is done, points are awarded.
Other factors to consider, is the connector itself.
Was it soldered, then crimped with proper crimping tool, and or was it heat shunk to protect
the connector and reduce
chapping points or contact to
negative ground points?
In general, wiring presents
itself and is a major issue
when realizing that the sum of
all the parts on the bike
that
rely
on
electrical
components to function

that wires are run through a

by judges to ensure there is
no burrs on the holes
drilled that the wires pass
through and that the wires are protected with rubber grommets is another positive factor in
assigning points.
In today’s complicated electronic components, especially with on-board computers,
GPS, I-pods, and stereo amps and air suspension systems have introduced 20-22 gage wiring
and in some cases non-environmental connectors are being used rather than the builder
sourcing more environmental connectors to tie the components to the build. Judges are
looking for signs of how these were incorporated and whether the builder did research and
any efforts to ensuring longevity in the assembly process. Points are then raised in scoring.

of electrical components. Where the wiring is tie wrapped to a cluster of wires or left
unrestrained. Points can be deducted for stray wires. To learn more on what judges look

It was a beautiful day and the
Harley sun god graced our
presence, when bikes from all over
the state arrived to participate in
the House of Harley Spring bike
show. IMBBA was challenged with having three judges and over 75 bikes to judge in 6
hours, The bikes were incredible and challenging for the judges.
Bob McKay, IMBBA Master Judge/Master Bike Builder along with Charlie Hadayia Jr.
from S&S Cycle, was among the judges who worked feverishly to score a tuff
competition. Results will be posted in next quarter’s newsletter.

IMBBA Welcomes Bikernet Insurance Center LLC
-to the IMBBA network and affiliates that are working
towards a common goal of National Standard for values
and appraisals when it comes to motorycles and
insurance.
"I can tell you from 30 years of experience in the
insurance business that the key missing link with insuring
"Constructed Bikes" has been the lack of reliable and
trustworthy appraisals. We've built a business around
insuring special construction customs."
