Father, You sent your Word to bring us truth
and your Spirit to make us holy.
Through them we come to know the mystery of your life.
Help us to worship you, one God in three persons,
You reveal yourself in the depths of our being,
by proclaiming and living our faith in you.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.

PASTORS COLUMN
This week I was asked a question. The individual inquiring was very sincere and as a young person
was asking a question that comes from the issues talked about in our society. The question was: “If a woman
believes that her gender is male and not female and is legally recognized as a male could that person be
considered a candidate for the priesthood if they felt that God was truly calling them to be a priest in the
Catholic Church?” To be honest I would not have expected this question a year ago, if ever, but it is reflective
of what might be on the minds and hearts of some people who ponder current events in the light of a faith
filled response.
In a different aspect the question has somewhat already been asked and answered. According to a
Catholic News Agency report of September 2, 2015: “A media firestorm arose in Spain after a transsexual
woman, who considers herself a man, asked to be the godfather of her nephew – leading a diocese's bishop
to turn to the Vatican for an answer. After writing to the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
about the issue earlier this month, Bishop Rafael Zornoza Boy of Cádiz and Ceuta was told that since
transsexual persons are not consistently living Church teaching, its “impossible” for them to fulfill their
duties as a godparent. The bishop wrote the letter after Alex Salinas, 21 years-old and born a woman, had
requested to be the godfather of her nephew. In their response, the congregation – charged with
safeguarding Catholic teaching – said that it is “impossible to allow” a person with transsexual behavior to
be a baptismal godmother or godfather. In a Sept. 1 statement, the bishop said he turned to the Vatican due
to “confusion among some of the faithful” and “the complexity and media attention garnered by this issue,”
as well as the pastoral implications the decision has. In the Vatican’s full response – which the bishop
provided in his statement – the congregation explained that transsexual behavior “reveals in a public way an
attitude opposite to the moral imperative of solving the problem of sexual identity according to the truth of
one's own sexuality.” “Therefore it is evident that this person does not possess the requirement of leading a
life according to the faith and in the position of godfather and is therefore unable to be admitted to the
position of godfather or godmother,” they said, referring to canon 874 §3 in the Code of Canon Law.
However, the congregation stressed that there is “no discrimination toward (Alex), but only the recognition
of an objective lack of the requirements, which by their nature are necessary to assume the ecclesial
responsibility of being a godfather.”
In his Encyclical Letter, Laudato Si’, published on Pentecost 2015, Pope Francis wrote, “The
acceptance of our bodies as God’s gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire world as a gift from the
Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns,
often subtly, into thinking that we enjoy absolute power over creation. Learning to accept our body, to care
for it and to respect its fullest meaning, is an essential element of any genuine human ecology. Also, valuing
one’s own body in its femininity or masculinity is necessary if I am going to be able to recognize myself in an
encounter with someone who is different. In this way we can joyfully accept the specific gifts of another man
or woman, the work of God the Creator, and find mutual enrichment. It is not a healthy attitude which
would seek “to cancel out sexual difference because it no longer knows how to confront it”.
In the body of work known as the Theology of the Body, St. John Paul II wrote masterfully on the gift
and complexity of the human person. In his weekly general audiences between 1979 and 1984 his talks,
which have been gathered into a book, had a profound impact on Christian thinking about what it means to
be embodied as male or female. In one section he wrote, “It is an illusion to think we can build a true culture
of human life if we do not . . . accept and experience sexuality and love and the whole of life according to
their true meaning and their close inter-connection.” It is clear that there will be many more questions and
confusions in the arena of human sexuality. In order to be faithful and give witness to Christ it is imperative
that we know the teachings of the Church.
Peace,
Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY
First Reading: Genesis 14:18-20
Melchizedek, a priest of God, prayed that Abram
would be blessed by God. He also praised God for
delivering Abram's foes into his hands.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Paul describes Jesus' actions during the last supper. Jesus broke bread and said it was his body
given for us, asking that we do the same in remembrance of him. He then passed the cup and
called it his blood. Jesus then asked us to break
bread in this manner to
remember his death until
he returns.
Gospel: Luke 9:11b-17
Jesus spoke to a large
crowd when his disciples
asked that he dismiss the
people to give them a
chance to find food and
lodging. Jesus asked the
disciples to give the crowd
something to eat, but they had only five loaves of
bread and two fish. Jesus then blessed and distributed the food, which fed about 5,000 people.
Twelve baskets were then collected from what was
left over.
DIOCESAN FOOD COLLECTION
Next weekend, we are invited to
participate in a Diocesan-wide food
collection for the poor. The
collection sponsored by Catholic
Charites will help us offer assistance
to those most in need in our
Diocesan community of Morris,
Passaic, and Sussex Counties. The
entire Diocese of Paterson will join
together in this effort. Our parish
has been asked to provide both regular and
decaffeinated coffee and cold cereal. Kindly
bring your donations next weekend to the narthex
of the church. Thank you for your generosity.
