Gravely scholarships. NNOA Tidewater began the 2014 fundraising effort in April at Harbor Park during the Norfolk Tides (http://norfolk.tides.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t568) Baseball season. As part of the program, members volunteered more than 300 hours staffing concessions at the stadium of the Triple‑A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. “We fulfilled our commitment to raising money for our Samuel L. Gravely Scholarships to award to deserving young men and women in our community,” said Lt. Cmdr. Anjail F. Belton, the Harbor Park volunteer coordinator. “The funds will go toward our scholarships we will give away in 2015.” Annually, the chapter awards one $2,500 and two $1,500 scholarships in honor of Vice Adm. Samuel Gravely (http://www.history.navy.mil/bios/gravely.htm), the first African‑American to command a U.S. Navy warship, to be promoted to flag rank and to become a fleet commander. Applications for the 2015 Samuel L. Gravely Scholarships will be available early next year. The mission of NNOA (http://www.nnoa.org) is to actively support the Sea Services (Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard) in the development of a diverse officer and civilian leadership corps through recruitment, retention, and career development. High school seniors who meet the scholarship criteria listed in the application are eligible to apply regardless of ethnicity or military/non‑military affiliation.
