In today’s second reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians, Paul refers again to his own dramatic conversion. Yet, there is something deeper in his words. Paul wrote the letter because divisions had developed in the Church he, Paul, had established in Galatia. At the base of the disagreement was whether or not Gentiles had to conform to Jewish law to become and be Christians. Paul makes it clear that they do not. This has a much more profound meaning for the Galatian community, and for us today as well. According to Paul, a person of faith is transformed (as he personally was) and that change means that the convert — the steward if you will — has a different motivation than she or he had previously. If you would like to donate flowers for the altar for Masses, please Contact: Lu- The good steward does what is right because that is the way to live — a ther 907-7746 x330 reflection of Jesus’ own life — not because of obligation or duty. The [email protected] steward is not conforming to a set of laws, but to live the way Jesus Bulletin Submissions Please read bulletin submission guidelines: www.stmarktampa.org/bulletin Next week’s deadline: Noon on Monday 2 called us to live. That was Paul’s message to the Galatians, and that same message applies to us. The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 9, 2013 100% Participation & One Year Pledges... Look and See what’ s new!! New Church Update Greetings to all of you! Our hearts were saddened this past week as we said goodbye to a man who has been an institution here at St. Mark as well as the Tampa area for so many years. This past Tuesday we laid to rest the soul of Dick Ray, whom I'm sure, most people knew and loved with all their hearts. His funeral liturgy was packed with all those that Dick touched in his life and who touched him. There were a few tears but also joy in knowing that he would go with God's Grace to his Heavenly reward. Dick Ray was an icon here at our parish and an innovator as well. Despite his advancing age, he never slowed down with ideas and actions that would make St. Mark a great place to worship and serve. As a matter of fact, it was Dick who instigated our desire to build a new Church and one day he said to me that he was so thrilled that it just might happen in his lifetime. Well, Dick, we got very close, all because of your tireless support! But, there was one first that I'm happy to report. His funeral was the first time our new bells tolled for a funeral liturgy and then peeled with excitement as we said farewell to this great man for the last time. May you rest in peace, my dear friend, until we all meet again in that heavenly banquet that God has prepared for all of us! Capital Campaign Update $4,932,0254 in pledges $3,565,373 in cash Soon to be... Well, that is all for now. May all of us follow the example of this great man, a life always lived for others. Peace, Fr. David Get your Tiles Today. The Cross is filling up fast! The bottom of our Cross will be dedicated to our children, and only the children’s tiles will be placed there. Our children are the foundation of our faith. 3 ST. MARK the EVANGELIST WWW.STMARKTAMPA.ORG Food Pantry Needs Your Help! The first letter of John tells us: “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10) Since we know that “God is love” (1 John 4:16), we can substitute “God” for “love” in the words of St. Paul. God is patient, God is kind. God is not jealous, God is not pompous, God is not inflated, God is not rude, God does not seek his own interests, God is not quicktempered, God does not brood over injury, God does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. God bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. The first letter of John goes on to tell us: “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.” (1 John 4:16) Created in the image and likeness of God, we are called to love as God loves. So now we can substitute our own name in place of “God.” When I do this, I find it does not describe me very well. I may show some of these characteristics at times but most often I fail. As I researched the meaning of each of these characteristics, I realized how far short I fall in putting my faith into action through love. I take consolation in the words of Pope Benedict XVI: “Christ is not so much interested in how often in our lives we stumble and fall, as in how often with his help we pick ourselves up again.” (Vigil with Young People, Freiburg, Germany, September 24, 2011.) The challenge of faith is to not give up even when we fail but to keep trying as St. Paul tells us: “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all.” (Galatians 6:9-10) In speaking of these characteristics of love, Charles Pope notes: “All these things love does. Note again this very important point. The litany of love we have just reflected on speaks of the fruits of Love. We must not understand this litany as a “to do” list, as if to say, “Do these things and you’ll love.” No, no! “Love and you’ll do these things.” Or rather, God will do them in you. It is true that we can look to a list like this and see ways to intentionally act, and practices to foster, but in the end, if these things are going to last, they must be the work of God in us, the fruit of His love.” We are called to let go of ourselves and allow the God of love to work through us in bringing his love into the world. The prayer of Mary Magdalene de Pazzi to the Holy Spirit should also be our prayer: “Come! Consume in us whatever prevents us from being consumed in you.” How Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith (October 11, 2012 through November 24, 2013) “In this Year of Faith let us ask ourselves whether we really have taken some steps to know Christ and the truth of faith better by reading and meditating on Sacred Scripture, by studying the Catechism and by receiving the sacraments regularly. However, let us ask ourselves at the same time what steps we are taking to ensure that faith governs the whole of our existence. We are not Christian “part-time”, only at certain moments, in certain circumstances, in certain decisions; no one can be Christian in this way, we are Christian all the time! Totally!” (Pope Francis, General Audience, May 15, 2013) St. Mark's Summer For most of us, it's vacation time. The need for blood, however, never takes time off. With serious accidents, necessary surgeries and chronic illnesses the demand is always there. We at St. Mark can help by donating a little of our time and a pint of blood. Our June Blood Drive will be held on the week end of June 22nd and 23rd. First Friday of every Month: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament There will be sign up sheets available 9 AM to 5 PM with Benediction at 5:30 PM. on June 8th/9th and on June15th/16th after all the Masses...Won't you give the gift of life to a patient in need. 7 Parish Schedule & Mass Intentions Sunday Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jun 9, 2013 Readings: 1 Kgs 17:17-24; Gal 1:11-19; Lk 7:11-17 8:30 AM Mass (Grace Cincotta (d) by Joan Weingarten) 10:30 AM Liturgy of the Word for Children (Mark 1 & 2) 10:30 AM Mass (Maximina Corrales (d) by the Montuno Family) 11:30 AM Spanish Choir (Music Room) 12:30 PM Mass (Francisca Canadilla (d) by Cristina Santana) 1:30 PM Spanish Baptisms (Worship Area) 2:00 PM Cursillo Ultreya (Music Room) 5:30 PM Mass (Omar Rodriguez (d) by Mariela Labrador) Monday Jun 10, 2013 Readings: 2 Cor 1:1-7; Mt 5:1-12 9:00 AM Legion of Mary (Mark 1) 12:00 PM Mass (Paul Marsella (d) by the Marsella Family) 6:00 PM Knights of Columbus Degree Team (Music Room) 6:30 PM Financial Peace University (Luke 1 & 2) Tuesday St. Barnabas Jun 11, 2013 Readings: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Mt 5:13-16 8:30 AM Mass ( Harriett Perrett (d) by Jim & Sharon Shanahan) 10:00 AM SMARTS Card Social (John 1 & 2) 6:30 PM Boy Scout Court of Honor (Worship Area) 6:30 PM Boy Scout Meeting (Music Room) 7:00 PM Columbiettes Officers Meeting (Office Conference Room) 7:30 PM Contemporary Music Rehearsal (Worship Area) Wednesday Jun 12, 2013 Readings: 2 Cor 3:4-11; Mt 5:17-19 8:30 AM Mass ( Vocations Worship Area) 9:30 AM Sacramental Records Project (Office Conference Room) 7:00 PM Women's CRHP Meeting (Matt 1 & 2) 7:30 PM Parish Choir (Music Room) 7:30 PM Spanish Bible Study (Mark 1) 9:30 PM Cantor Practice (Music Room) Thursday Readings: 10:00 AM 12:00 PM 6:45 PM 7:00 PM 7:00 PM 7:30 PM Friday Readings: 8:30 AM Saturday Readings: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM Sunday Readings: 8:30 AM 10:30 AM 11:30 AM 12:30 PM 1:30 PM 5:30 PM St. Anthony of Padua 2 Cor 3:15-4:1, 3-6; Mt 5:20-26 Spanish Bible Reflections (Mark 1) Mass (Joan Painter (d) by Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Pignatelli) Children's Spanish Choir (Music Room) Men's CRHP - Matt 1 & 2 Novena to the Miraculous Medal (Chapel) Spanish Charismatic Prayer Group (Chapel) Jun 13, 2013 Jun 14, 2013 2 Cor 4:7-15; Mt 5:27-32 Mass ( Parishioners of St. Mark (Worship Area) Jun 15, 2013 2 Cor 5:14-21; Mt 5:33-37 EM Annual Workshop (Luke 1 & 2, Matt 1 & 2, Worship Area) Mass ( SSgt Joseph Fuerst (d) by Knights of Columbus ) Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Jun 16, 2013 2 Sm 12:7-10, 13; Gal 2:16, 19-21, Lk 7:36 - 7:36-50 Mass ( Parishioners of St. Mark (Worship Area ) Mass ( Patrick Strom (d) by His Family ) Spanish Choir (Music Room) Mass ( Carmen Maldonado (d) by Her Daughter Yolanda ) Spanish Baptisms (Worship Area) Mass ( Rudy Paraoan (d) by Lorna, Dyna and Hazel) ) To View the Online Calendar: www.stmarktampa.org/schedule To Make Room Scheduling Requests : [email protected] Children’s Faith Formation Corner Tag! You're It! When you were baptized, you became part of God's family. You are His. Do you know it is your job to go out and tag others so that they will want to be part of God's family? If you have friends who don't go to church, invite them to come with you! If you have ever played with Dominoes, you might have stood them up on their ends and lined them up in a row. Sometimes we just about have them all standing up, and then we bump one of them and it falls; causing the other dominoes in its path to fall with it. Sometimes one of the dominoes might be just far enough away from the others and remains standing. Think of yourself and the people who you spend your time with as Dominoes. If you see them doing things you know are wrong, do you stand far enough away so as not to fall with them, or do you join them and allow yourself to fall with them? This is when you might think of another game, Follow the Leader. Become the leader! Not everyone has the strength to step away from trouble, and this is where you can become their source of strength. People watch other people. And those watching you may choose to follow your steps. In the game of Mother May I, the players ask permission before taking their steps forward. Before you take steps, stop and ask, God, may I? Then listen to whether or not He gives you a Red Light (or) Green Light! This is unfortunate in most cases, because State laws will take over and will distribute your probate estate in accordance to a prescribed formula-possibly in a way that you would not choose. Any charitable interests you wanted to benefit will not occur. For more information call Cyndi at 907-7746.
