VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION
REQUESTED
We are asking all volunteers
to provide the Senior Office
staff with a fairly accurate
“start date” to determine their
length of service. We want
to insure that all volunteers
whose names should be on the
“FIVE YEAR RECOGNITION
PLAQUE” are inscribed accurately.
This includes volunteers with the
MEAAA, CORP and Telecare

as well as our own Bridgeton
volunteers. Thanks!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
NAME: Leatrice “Lea” Fennel
BIO: Lea Fennel was born and raised in North St.
Louis with her older sister Helen. They attended
St. Louis city schools and graduated from Soldan
High. After graduation, Lea followed Helen’s
lead (who was working at a jewelry store downtown) and took a job with Gombas & Meyer,
a jewelry repair shop in the Chemical Building
where she was a “diamond setter.” A few years
later, Lea headed north to the new Northland
Shopping Center where she worked for
Wehmueller Jewelers. By then, Helen was
working as a clerk for the St. Ann Police Department and on one of Lea’s visits to her sister, she
met a young Bridgeton police sergeant named
Louis Fennel who asked her out. They married
within 6 months of their first date following a
whirlwind courtship & a front porch proposal. Lou
was already considered part of the family especially embraced by her father who had worked as a
civilian for the St. Louis Police Department & Lea,
in turn embraced Roger and Michael, her new
stepsons. They moved to North County and before long were purchasing their newly built home
in the Bridgeway subdivision of Bridgeton. At this
time, Lou was rising through the ranks at the
Bridgeton PD and Lea had moved on to the chic
Jaccards Jewelry—one of the finest & first of
many stores at the new and modern shopping center known as Northwest Plaza. Both Lou & Lea
were truly invested in Bridgeton & loved living
and working (as well as shopping!) in their own
community. After 29 years, Lou retired as a Major
from the Bridgeton Police Department, with both
enjoying retirement until his passing in 2006. Still
committed to her community, Lea began volunteering for OASIS two days per week where she
currently tutors four students at Bridgeway School.
She is also an avid “donor” to our monthly WISH
LISTS helping her community & knowing “there
by the grace of God, go I” as well as donating to
her favorite charities. In her spare time, Lea is an
avid reader of intrigue and mystery & holds tight
to Lou’s police badge as her lucky charm.
After years of working in the jewelry business,
Lea is the real GEM! !
THANKS LEA!!!
