(Expressively Active, Great-minded, Lively, Energetic Students OREGON COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT #220 By: Holly Handschuh and Gracie Mingus For this month’s issue, we decided to interview eighth grader Reese Thesien. We started out by asking who her favorite YouTuber is. Her answer was fellow peer Joshua Sitze ( subscribe to him at McKlunk!). Her favorite video, although she is a big fan of McKlunk’s “PARKOUR!!!!”, would have to be Miranda Sings “Why can’t I have a castle?”. Tofurky or no tofurky was our next conversation topic, and she told us she would definitely chose tofurky. Although, after discovering that it was in fact tofu- turkey, we all decided that it would be very gross. Continuing the theme of food, we learned that her favorite candy is Kit-Kats and her favorite kind of Slurpee is the cherry flavor. Most of the student body is involved in at least one sport, however when we asked Reese, there was simply cricket noises. If she could live in any kind of house it would be a gingerbread house – which is pretty ironic considering her hair color. If she could interview one person, it would either be her best friend Holly Handschuh or Harry Styles (so she could caress his hair). Her favorite class is any time after school, and her favorite key on the keyboard is the number lock because she doesn’t know what it does. To wrap up the interview, we asked her favorite thing she got for Christmas which was an Obama Chia Pet. If you ever see Reese in the halls or in class, strike up a conversation about her Chia Pet or her intense love for Harry Styles and you’re sure to have her talking for hours. 7th Grade Interview By Ryker Finch and Josh Sitze For the month of January, we had interviewed a peculiar Owen Ketter. We asked the same Ol’ same Ol’ questions. His favorite sport is basketball, but he told us that soccer was a close 2nd. When we asked the age old spiritual question: “what’s your spirit animal?” Owen answered smugly with “hawk”. His hobbies include sports… yeah, that’s it. Sports. The three things Mr. Ketter would bring to a desert island would be the world, food, and Wi-Fi. Owen prefers summer over winter, as he prefers the warm weather. There you have it ladies and gentleman, the one and only Owen Ketter. Mr. Beske was named after the famous Jazz Trumpet player Miles Davis, Miles being Mr. Beske’s first name. He likes to play golf the most when not directing the band, but also likes to watch the UW Badgers (a men’s basketball team), travel, and work at The “Pit”(cabin). He has a dog named Rollie that is his life and a cat named Brewer. Life seems to revolve more around Rollie, as he doesn’t much care what Brewer is up to. He hates when students don’t practice or miss band lessons but likes it when people work together to accomplish great musical pieces. He’s most proud of his son Zach graduating with a degree in Instrumental Music ED. Band is a great activity to be a part of; Mr. Beske would agree too, so come join band! Page 2 Spelling Bee By: Lauren Montavon and Cynthia Nyderek In our DLR spelling bee, we had 26 students attempting to win and go to Dixon for regionals. Each student participating had a L to R: DLR’s Top Spellers: great amount of Adam Glendenning, Ashley courage to go McCormick, Jed Bothe up in front of everyone and spell! Every student had to spell one word each round, if they spelled their wrong, they were out. At the end of the spelling bee, Adam Glendening took the win by spelling frequently correctly. He will be moving onto regionals in Dixon! The runner up of our spelling bee was Ashley McCormick. She fought till the end, but unfortunately she got out on the word modular. This past spelling bee was very difficult; we think that the most difficult word was hoity-toity... (I think that’s how you spell it). If you see Adam in the hall, you should wish him good luck on regionals! Girls Basketball By: Ren Thompson and Josey Fox The mystery person By Amber Bennett Is in 7th grade Is in choir and basketball Favorite color is black Favorite animal is a panda Is 13 years old Favorite music is black veil brides Favorite class is computers Tell Amber Bennett your correct guess and get a treat from Ms. Leamanczyk As most of you know, it’s girls’ basketball season! That also means it’s time to eat a bunch of concession food! Anyway, we interviewed Ashley McCormick from Eighth grade team and Ella Martin from Seventh grade. Our first question was “How rigorous are your practices?” Ashley answered, if you’re injured-VERY but if you practice well and are physically fit. then you should be fine. You need lots of water and may feel like you’re going to die. Ella replied, hard at first but once you start to get used to it, it gets easier. We then asked, “How tough is your coach on you?” They both replied with the same answer-“tough but not too tough”. Ashley and Ella think their teams work well together, especially since most of them have been playing together for years. They don’t think it’s hard to memorize the terms and plays that are used to help them succeed. We asked, “How many drills do you do per practice?” Ashley’s team does about 10 and Ella’s only does about 5-6 per practice. Our last and final question was “Do you personally Olivia Lambrigtsen shoots as Lorena Nava-Moyotl looks on enjoy basketball?” Now you might think that’s a stupid question but some people are forced to sports even if they don’t like it. Ashley replied, “Yes I do, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing Basketball.” Ella just answered with a flat out “yes”. So if you can, go and watch some of their games! Five 7th graders and five of 8th graders battle to be the last boy/girl standing. On our 7th grade side we had Jaydn Bothe, Trinity Zellers., Madison Page., Leah Waters., Heather Braden And with our 8th grade side we had Eli Rufer., Charles Gatz., Aidan Stuart., Cynthia Nyderek., and Gabi Scott. The judges/questioners they had Mr. Martin and Mr. Donmeyer. And the must have been famous because we had cameras and not just one, but two cameras constantly taking shot of these hard working and intelligent thinkers. Most of them lost their first point in the first four rounds, but a majority of them were knocked out by or in the 6th round. At the start of the 7th round only three that remained Aidan, Cynthia, and Leah. In a final 9th round Clockwise: they each had just one point left; Aidan is up Cynthia Nyand a miss, Leah is up and a miss, if Cynthia get derek, Gabi the next question right she win… and she got it Scott, Triniright. Cynthia is your Geography Bee Champi- ty Zellers, Madison on. So that was your Geography Bee: nine Page, Leah rounds of geography questions with Cynthia coming out the school Champion. Cynthia said Waters, Heather after the Bee that she didn’t know what to think Braden, Eli and was nervous the entire time—probably the Rufer and same as everyone else. Cynthia now has to take Aidan Stua test to see if she is good enough to go to com- art. pete at Chicago. Wrestling DLR Eagles By: Gabi Scott and Kaylee Wilkinson This month we interviewed two wrestlers. One boy from eighth grade, Ryker Finch, and one from seventh grade, Hunter Nowicki. The first person to be interviewed was Hunter. In 6th grade, Mr. Martin (7th grade Social Studies teacher) came to the elementary school and got the boys interested in the wrestling program. Hunter joined and has been a part of it since. His coaches are Mr. Martin and Mr. Marchetti. Wrestling practice mostly consists of educating the boys on moves and regulations, and learning lots of new things every day, allowing them to grow. Hunter has no favorite move, and always likes to “change things up”. The worst part of practice, according to Hunter, is when kids mess around and the entire team has to do sprints as punishment. When asked if he liked his coach, Mr. Martin, Hunter responded with “Yeah, because Mr. M is funny sometimes but [he’s] serious when it comes to wrestling. We have lots of fun.” Wrestling is scored as a team, but each individual match goes towards the teams score advancing. Of course, Hunter’s favorite part of it all is when they win all together as a team. Next, we interviewed Ryker Finch in eighth grade. His coaches are also Mr. Martin and Mr. Marchetti. Ryker’s favorite part of practice is when they play games at the end. When asked if he liked his team, and what about them, he said “Yeah, they’re pretty cool, I guess.” Obviously, you can practically hear the enthusiasm pouring out of his love for the team. Ryker, being Ryker, loves not only the games, but also the aspect of hurting people. Yep, one of his favorite things isn’t team bonding, or even the winning feeling. Nope, it’s physically beating someone else’s body. Adding on to his vicious ways, Ryker’s favorite move is called the “Suicide Tilt”, because it’s easy to pin people off of. As you can probably tell, Ryker is all about being a bonding member of his team, and is overall a completely normal child… Right? Ryker Finch gets control of his opponent during an intense match. The top vote was Horror, with 45 votes. Action and Comedy were next with Comedy having 37 votes, and Action having 32 votes. Then Romance with 8 votes, Drama with 5 votes, and Sci-Fi with 3. We want to say thank you to everyone who voted. Movie Review: Star Wars By: Brandon Hyde-Jones and Aidan Stuart This month, we decided to review the new Star Wars movie. The movie takes place 30 years after the original trilogy, and all the original characters are still played by the same actors. Now, if for whatever reason, you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t worry this will be completely spoiler free. First, Kylo Rein (The main antagonist) is by far, the WORST STAR WARS VILLAIN EVER! For starters, the fact that they chose Adam driver to play him was a terrible idea. And it doesn’t help that they gave him the role of some punk kid who idolizes Darth Vader. Second, the entire movie is somewhat a rip off of the first movie released in the franchise. The main character, Rey, lives on a desert planet; much like Luke did in the beginning. She is rescued by a former imperial soldier, just as Luke was by Han (Also a former imperial soldier, in case you didn’t know). Of course, they find a droid that carries a message for the resistance, exactly as they found R2-D2 in the original movie who carried a message for the rebellion. That’s about all I can say without too many spoilers, Even though this movie wasn’t nearly as good as the originals, (mostly because Disney feels the need to appeal to a newer, dumber, audience) it did do a decent job of setting up for the next movie, (hopefully this one isn’t also a fluke). I would still recommend going to see the movie, only because, its kind of demanded of you if you are a Star Wars fan. And if, for whatever reason, you have decided to not be a human being and see the first 6 movies, do yourself a favor and watch them in the order of release.
