School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Seeking Wisdom Buscando la Sabiduría Today’s readings and prayers remind us to ask God for the gift of wisdom so that we may discern our response to his Word. The reading from the Book of Wisdom directs us to this supplication, “I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.” This Old Testament voice says nothing compares to wisdom because “all good things together came to me in her company. “ This voice understands the entreaty in the responsorial psalm that we must ask God “to make us glad for the day when you afflicted us, for the years when we saw evil.” This wise understanding of how God’s grace works in our lives contrasts with the voice of the man in the gospel. He approaches Jesus saying, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” The man acknowledges that he has kept the commandments that Jesus enumerates. Jesus invites him saying, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, and sell what you have, and give to the poor; then come, follow me.” At this moment the man becomes sad and leaves. Saint James’ letter to the Hebrews explains what has occurred. “The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.” The man’s inability to surrender his worldly stability and power has been “exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.” This is also our challenge. God calls us through his Word and we must discern our response. We pray, “May your grace, O Lord, at all times go before us and follow after and make us always determined to carry out good works through Christ our Lord” (Collect). Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. I once believed that because I went to school and took science classes, I already knew everything about how the world and the universe works. Who needs religion right? Well a few years ago I married my wonderful wife who's Catholic. So I thought I would get in her good side and go to church with her every week. So there I was sitting at the back of the church and thinking wow what a nice group of people. My wife then exclaimed "wow did you hear the choir? I have to go sing with them!" So, thinking I would really get some major points, I joined the choir with Religious Education her! Our amazing choir was so loving and welcoming even though I wasn't Catholic! I left Mass every week with such a wonderful feeling! Then my wife and I joined Our Lady of the Assumption the Living Matrimony small group and it was the same School heart warming experience! I then realized maybe science Today is the OLA School Wild West Festiclass DIDN'T teach me everything I needed to know. So val, there will be songs performed by the last summer when it was announced that RCIA was startstudents, delicious food, rides, bingo, a ing, I wanted to go - but did I have to go "back to mechanical bull and a chili cook off. This is the initial Virtus training class required for all adults who work with or around children. Did you Know? When secrets become dangerous There is no better time of year to review the important family rules that help to keep all children safe. It takes just a few moments to review with your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and safe adults in their life are, and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are secrets that are NOT safe to keep. Help your child understand the difference.
