our story
O
ur story begins with a
few similarities to the
late 1960’s sitcom Green
Acres. Much as Oliver
and Lisa Douglas left New York City
for Hooterville, Stephen and I (Gloria)
left the bustle of big business life
around New York City for Roseburg,
Oregon. While our transition to life
in rural Oregon was not as drastic as
the Douglas’s transition to Hooterville,
we did experience our own “period of
adjustment.”
After Stephen sold his company,
he decided that he would pursue
winemaking and viticulture. After
all, as a teen and young adult, he grew up working in
orchards, where he learned fundamental farming and
management techniques. Stephen knew, based on his
success as a teen, becoming a foreman at only 15 years old,
he could manage the agricultural aspects of winemaking.
In addition, he already possessed a passion for collecting
world-class wines and this Summa Cum Laude,
Rutgers University graduate was a quick study. It
seemed Stephen had a knack for learning anything
he put his mind to. SDG.
The first order of business was to decide where to land.
We decided to look around a bit and, spent about
a year in research while living in the San Francisco
area. We travelled many miles visiting various grapegrowing regions, looking for the perfect place. We
searched high and low, from Temecula, California to
Walla-Walla, Washington and everything in between.
There had to be a perfect spot, a place with south
facing slopes, the right soils, the right climate, and
the right people. While there were several places to
choose from, a visit to a potential location near Roseburg
brought Stephen to town. While in town he took a
walk around the Stewart Park bike path, where he saw
a young family playing wiffle ball in the park. Just few
moments later, he saw an“older” couple sitting on a park
bench holding hands and enjoying the view of the South
Umpqua River on a beautiful fall morning – at that
moment, Stephen knew, “this was the place.”
Stephen & Gloria Overlooking Vineyards (2004)
Settling down in a small valley in Umpqua, we found
everything we were looking for, the right slope, the right
soils, and the right climate to make the world-class wine
Stephen desired to create. The site, coupled with a sense of
community and feeling of family that we were searching
for, was home. The only thing missing was...a vineyard.
Getting Ready to Plant (2001)
Undaunted, we began to clear the hillside of the
overgrown brush, poison oak, and trees that had been
previously allowed to reclaim the land. Once we cleared
the land, with the help of local contractors and farmers,
like neighbor Mike Ritchie, it was time to establish our
vineyard. In 2002, we hand-planted our first ten acres of
grape vines. It was so exciting, we began to see our dreams
come true, and in 2004, we bottled our first vintage.
W
e dedicated everything we were doing to the Lord,
and had even placed a bible verse on our corks!
Little did we know that the Federal Government would be
offended by these simple words... “Drink your wine with
a happy heart... the Lord approves of this.” Ecclesiastes
9:7. It seemed like a crushing blow, our wine was already
bottled - ready to be released and the government was
putting a hold on it. After a lot of prayer and many
appeals we were granted the right to sell the bottles that
had the verse, but only if we did not write the words on
future corks. This led to our current cork which only has
the reference... Ecc. 9:7. The media caught wind of the
“banned” corks and we gained instant fame. While it did
not feel like it at the time, it became a blessing in disguise,
as bottles with the original
corks became collector’s items!
Can you believe it... our first
vintage was “collectable!”
Wanting to give back to the Lord and make a difference in
our world, we partnered with our church to hand harvest
our first, and every grape harvest since. In doing so, we
contribute the money the hand harvesters earn to church
mission efforts and have literally helped send church
teams from Oregon to five of the seven continents.
As our vineyard production has grown, we have included
other local churches and non-profit organizations to help
hand harvest our grapes and fund even more outreach
programs here at home and abroad.
HARVEST!
2015
Our First Tasting Room (2006)
O
ur children Tristan and Walter grew, and so did
our winery. By 2006, we were producing over
4,000 cases a year and our wine club was growing...
really growing. Stephen said I was wearing so many
hats it was hard to tell which one I was in and when.
From greeting our guests as the “Face of the winery” to
working in the “Tasting room” as our wine educator, to
fulfilling orders, bussing tables, doing dishes, and being
the “Queen of Hospitality”– Stephen said I was a walking
dynamo (and still am). I endeavored to make each guest
feel special, as if I had known them all of their lives.
But by then, it seemed we had outgrown our garagewinery; it was just too small to house our winemaking
operation, distribution point, and tasting room. We had
to expand, but how? We needed a larger winery space, a
larger tasting room, a place for barrels, a place for storage
– we were bursting at the seams. Stephen came up with a
plan, something no one in the area had seen, or possibly
imagined – a wine cave!
I
n 2008, we built the cave. Carving out a chunk of the
south hillside, we built a cave inspired by European
architecture, and crafted by Victory builders – famous
for their concrete work for the Walt Disney Corporation
and other high visibility customers. In just 5 months, we
transformed the area, once used for overflow parking,
into a functioning winery, complete with a production
floor, tasting rooms, and storage facility – just in time for
the 2008 harvest. Now, with room to work, we continued
our path of crafting world-class wines.
Soon after Stephen started making wine, we realized our
wines were good...really good. Vintages sold out quickly
and in 2009, we began entering our wines in major wine
competitions. We wanted to see how our wines compared
against the best wines in the world. We knew, based on
our own and our customer’s palates the wine was good,
and we had our notions confirmed as the medals began
flowing in. We seemed to bring home medals everywhere
we went. From Finger Lakes in New York, to major
competitions in California we were gaining notice. In
fact, the Riverside International Wine Competition (one
of the largest wine competitions in the United States)
noticed us and in 2010 chose us as the Small Winery of
the Year.
Since 2009, we have taken home hundreds of medals,
awards, and honors. Dan Berger, Internationally known
wine critic, author, judge, and Chairman of the Riverside
International Wine Competition, selected our Syrah
to represent the United States in the 6 Nations Wine
Challenge, held in Sydney, Australia, three years in a row
from 2013-2015 – where we won the First Place Trophy
for the Best Syrah in the “New World” in 2015.
Our story does not end here; we continue to craft worldclass wines in small lots, paying meticulous detail to each
step in the winemaking process – from the care of the
vines in the vineyard through bottling our wine, Stephen
oversees each step in the process. It is said, “The owner’s
footsteps in the vineyard are reflected in the quality of
the wine,” and here at Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards we
will continue this tradition of excellence for generations
to come.
Amenities
O
ur desire, here at Reustle-Prayer Rock
Vineyards, is to provide a setting where guests
can come, relax, and turn off the cares of the
world. Even if for only a short afternoon, our
hope is that you find our grounds a respite from the toils
of everyday life. To facilitate that goal we have several
amenities on the property for you to enjoy.
The Courtyard
Our courtyard area is the first of these amenities.
Especially in the warmer months, our courtyard
provides a seated view of our educational vineyard, with
the backdrop of the Romancing Rock Vineyard. This
multi-purpose space, filled with Bistro tables, chairs, and
umbrellas is the perfect gathering point for small groups
to taste wine, enjoy music on special occasions, and just
hang out with friends.
The Observation Deck
A little more private is our “Members-Only” observation
deck overlooking the courtyard and winery property.
Filled with comfortable sofas, chairs, and low tables,
which are sheltered by shade-sails, this quiet spot is
complete with a bubbling fountain for relaxation.
The Reustle Amphitheater
I
n the warmer months, we produce a summer concert
series in the Reustle Amphitheater. With seating for
300, our amphitheater provides guests with an intimate
setting for concerts by regional and national artists. It is
also the perfect location for our summer “Date-night”
movies, where we set up a 25-foot screen and show
outdoor movies.
Stephen
often
embraces
his
“Whimsical”
side
and he installed the
“Outhouse” reflecting
just that. An attraction
in itself, a Dr. Seuss
inspired little building
nestled on the east side
of the amphitheater,
is
actually
an
“ O u t h o u s e”
complete with indoor
plumbing. This rustic
little building serves as
our “Ladies” room –
complete with crescent
moon on the door, the
1800’s symbol for the
ladies room – FYI a
star would have indicated the “Men’s” room.
With a knack for growing
things, Stephen has included
a diverse variety of plant life
in the garden area around
the amphitheater and the
winery grounds.
Many
guests enjoy simply walking
through the courtyard and
amphitheater area looking
at the plant life. The Narnia
inspired “BLUE DOOR”
leads to a shaded seating area
overlooking the courtyard.
Farm to table is not just a catch phrase for us here at the
winery, it is a practice as well. Near the greenhouse are
raised bed gardens where we raise many of the vegetables
and herbs we use in the winery. The gardens include
a broken stone path which winds through the foliage
leading to the pond.
Complete with Royal Mute Swans, our main pond is a
popular afternoon spot for guests to relax. The water
feature in the center of the pond is both functional and
therapeutic as it provides much needed aeration to the
pond and both visual and acoustic beauty. The pond
has its own set of amenities that include relaxing areas
for guests to enjoy with a bottle of wine and perhaps an
appetizer tray.
Just above the pond is an overlook area, complete with a
picnic table and sheltered by an umbrella. This area with
seating for four, is only a short walk from the winery.
Dock Houses & Pond
Following the path to the pond itself, one can sit on the
south dock, enjoy the relaxing pond sounds, and feel as if
you are in another place and time. Be aware, this is where
we feed the swans and they may swim by and say hello.
The path crosses the bridge to the north side where
we have two more docks, complete with dock houses.
With theme painted furnishings, these orange & black
(Beavers) and green & yellow (Ducks) dock houses are
available for you to spend a little time and relax with
friends. Give us a call and reserve a dock house to enjoy a
nice bottle of Reustle wine and a picnic lunch on a warm
summer afternoon. These are favorite spots where you
can often find Stephen reading a book in the evenings.
Remember we do not have a lifeguard on duty, so please
for your safety– NO SWIMMING in the pond.
See map of walking path near end of booklet.
O
pening in May of 2016, the Inn is located upstairs
in the old winery building. This one bedroom Inn,
complete with kitchen facilities and wood-burning stove
is available to visitors for a fee. With warmth and grace,
this space allows overnight visitors an opportunity to
escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
PRAYER ROCK
VINEYARDS INN
O
ne of the amenities with the most meaning to
everyone who knows the story is Prayer Rock.
Located atop the steep slope of our western vineyard,
Prayer Rock lends its name to the vineyard site itself –
Prayer Rock Vineyard. When the vineyard was young,
Stephen would ride his dirt bike up to the vineyard
to set up the irrigation. Walter, then only 4 years old,
loved riding with his father on the dirt bike. Together
they would ride to the top of the vineyard and start the
irrigation for the new vines. In doing so, they would
have to wait about 20 minutes for the water lines to fill
before they rode back to the winery. Stephen thought
this quality time with his young son would be best spent
teaching Walter how to pray. Together, they would sit on
a large boulder situated under the oak tree and pray.
r Rock (2004)
Reustle Family at Praye
One day, Stephen needed to return to the winery sooner
than usual and when he was about to leave Walter said,
“No Daddy, we have to pray at the rock.” Those words
from his pre-school son touched Stephen so much that he
had to change the name of the business to Reustle-Prayer
Rock Vineyards.
The rock, situated atop the hill and under the oak tree
remains today and is a favorite spot to take in God’s
beauty for workers in the vineyards and hand-harvesters
in the fall. This special spot can be reached by walking
the service road along the north fence westward up the
hill at Ritchie Ridge.
B &B
Many other wonderful quiet little spots on our property
are available just a short walk from the winery. We have
included a map that will aid you in a self-guided tour
around our grounds. In the warmer months, you can
enjoy an afternoon relaxing in one of these idealistic
spots. We encourage you to bring a picnic basket, grab a
bottle of Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards wine, and enjoy
the setting in our little valley in the Umpqua.
Welcome to our Wine Club. We look forward to getting
to know you better and to your visits to our winery.
Blessings,
Stephen & Gloria Reustle
We know how difficult it is to keep track of who is who and how do we get a hold of them… So here is a little about
each of the members of our Management Team. You can contact any of us by calling the main winery telephone
number (541) 459-6060.
Stephen M. Reustle – Owner/Winemaker
In addition to overseeing all aspects of Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards and being our winemaker,
Stephen moonlights as a wine judge. He has judged such prestigious events as Wine Press NW
“Best of the Best” Invitational Wine Competition, Savor NW Wine Competition, Great NW Wine
Competition, and Cascadia Wine Competition.
Gloria Reustle – Owner/Sales & Marketing
Managing all aspects of hospitality, Gloria supervises the details of the Wine Club Member and visitor
experience. Making sure each experience in the tasting room, and at special events - such as concerts,
dinners, educational offerings, and other functions is taken care of Gloria is often seen as the “Face of
the Winery.” Additionally, Gloria coordinates and leads our hand-harvesters during harvest.
Logan Kenagy – Tasting Room Manager
Overseeing the tasting room operation is no small task. With over 10,000 visitors a year, many of
whom are first time guests, our tasting room operation is not a small undertaking. Along with making
sure that each guest is afforded a pleasant wine tasting experience, Logan’s duties include managing
our Wine Club releases– safely getting your wine to you in a timely manner.
Wade Smith – Assistant Winemaker
In 2010, Wade came to us fresh from California with an eye for graphic design and a palate for handcrafted beverages. Initially thinking he wanted to work on small lot, microbrew beer production, he
soon saw the light and under Stephen’s guidance became our Assistant Winemaker. Wade continues
to use his talents in graphic design to produce all of our marketing materials, but is most often seen
side-by-side handcrafting wines with Stephen and oversees our winery operations.
Kevin Kline – Wine Educator/Special Events manager
In the fall of 2011, Kevin Kline entered our lives. Kevin is at home with presenting our wines to our
guests with a rather unique style. With experience in the music industry, Kevin has talents aside from
pouring and educating about wine… he can sing. Kevin is responsible for bringing us the best in
regional and nationally recognized musical groups for our summer concert series.
Ken McGinnis – Communications and Marketing Manager
Working mostly behind the scenes, Ken manages our communications and dreams up all those special
offers and wine club releases. He is our voice to the wine world. Additionally, Ken is on our blending
team, is a wine educator and works with Gloria on special events. He is often seen around the smoker
or salmon pit turning fillets or preparing special dinners for Valentines and other occasions.
Dave Ruble – Facilities Manager
Coming off a career in the building trades, Dave joined us in 2014, and keeps our building, grounds,
and equipment in tiptop shape. Dave is adept at repurposing building materials into new handcrafted
items – such as our new barrel signs. Not limited to the physical structures, Dave has found a home
operating some of the heavy equipment in the vineyard as well.
Lisa Gosciejew – Master Gardner
Certified as a Master Gardener Lisa tends to the variety of flora in and around the winery and vineyard.
Working in tandem with Stephen, she has the proverbial “Green Thumb” and it shows. Lisa is also
instrumental in supervising vineyard operations – everything from pruning to positioning to dropping
fruit, and works with Stephen to get things done in a timely efficient manner.
Elsa Romero While not officially a part of the management team, one face that has remained since 2009 is Elsa
Romero’s. Elsa is our “Go to Girl.” She is involved in almost everything we do. This petite Guatemalan
transplant has been a constant blessing to us at the vineyard. While she is small in stature, she is huge
in attitude and productivity. She is one of our multi-talented workers, at ease pruning vines in the
rain or working events in the kitchen – there is not much she cannot do.
awards & competitions
W
hen Stephen was a wine-collector on the East
Coast, he developed a passion for well-made
wines that reflected integrity of the grape
varietal, the region in which they were made, and the
vintage. In other words, he believes the wines needed
to be true to themselves, their home, and the year their
grapes were grown. Stephen carries that ideology into
how he creates Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards wines.
Remaining true to his principles, Stephen does not
change his wine to chase medals, awards, or accolades.
Rather, he makes wines that, true to varietal, terroir, and
vintage, are being recognized as among the “Best of the
Best.” To be included in the “Best of the Best” comes from
consistently receiving praise from major wine competition
judging panels. San Francisco Chronicle International
Wine Competition, The Los Angeles Wine Competition,
Riverside International Wine Competition, the 6 Nations
Wine Challenge – held in Sydney, Australia, are just a few
of the major competitions we enter.
Some of our most recent accolades include the First Place
Trophy for Syrah at the 2015 Six Nations Wine Challenge,
the “Terroir” Award for the best regional characteristics
in wine at the 2015 Riverside International Wine
Competition, and Double Gold medals for our Syrah
and Syrah Reserve at the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle
International Wine Competition. Another recent high
point was when all twelve wines invited to compete
at the Wine Press NW “Best of the Best” Invitational
Wine Competition won Gold, Double Gold, or Double
Platinum medals –quite a feat!!!
Winning a medal at one of the country’s major wine
competitions is quite an honor; no points are given for
just showing up. Judging wine at major competitions is
done by a panel of wine industry experts and is conducted
blind, no one knows whose wine they are evaluating.
To score a BRONZE Medal means that the wine was
without flaws and it is true to varietal (type of grape),
terroir (place), and vintage (year). A SILVER medal
indicates there was something special about the wine,
such as something in the experience stood out and made it
special. A GOLD medal means the wine was exceptional,
memorable and it stood out as a “Tall poppy in the field.”
When the entire panel votes for a wine to be Gold then
it earns a DOUBLE GOLD medal. Some competitions
also add PLATINUM and DOUBLE PLATINUM to
their medal list for wines that are beyond exceptional.
To earn one of these medals is truly an honor. You may
notice that on occasion a competition will have a “BEST
OF CLASS.” In determining the “BEST OF CLASS”
typically, all the GOLD or higher medal winning wines
are tasted again, by a separate panel of judges. After they
deliberate, they announce the BEST wine in that class –
hence “BEST OF CLASS.”
Stephen strives for perfection and meticulously oversees
every aspect of producing wines that bear his name.
Not to win awards, but to provide you, his wine club
family, with simply his best... All the awards, honors, and
medals serve to validate what Stephen and our wine club
members already know...Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards
consistently produces world-class wines, worthy of
applying the seal SDG.
The following pages list a brief summary of some of the
award highlights since we began competing in 2009. To
list nearly five hundred medals, awards, and accolades
would be a bit overwhelming. Should you be interested
in a full version of this overview, contact us at the winery
and we will get you the whole list of awards and honors.
Stephen was introduced to some of the finest winemakers
from around the world. Here is Stephen accepting our
highest honor yet...the First Place Trophy for the Best
Syrah of the New World at the 2015 Six Nations Wine
Challenge held in Sydney, Australia. It was quite an
honor as esteemed wine critic and judge Huon Hooke
presented Stephen the Award at a formal Dinner held in
Sydney, Australia.

T
he sign above our door reads, “Enter as
strangers, leave as friends.” It is not just a
clever saying, but rather how we treat every
visitor. You may come in as a new face, but
when you leave, we want you to be part of our extended
family. Our desire is to get to know you, your tastes,
and your passions – just as if you were a member of our
natural family; we want to have a close relationship with
you, our wine club family members.
As wine club members, you can expect that we will strive
to make your experience less like entering a business
and more like visiting a close friend or family member.
To realize this goal, we are constantly striving to deliver
better, more personalized service to each of our wine club
family members. Our wine club release parties are more
like a family reunion and less like high-pressure sales
demonstrations.
We have six “Regular” wine club shipments throughout
the year. You will receive wine usually in the months
of February, April, May, September, November, and
December. We have additional “Special” releases
sprinkled throughout the year. These “Special” releases
are wines that have a limited production or are otherwise
“Special” – like Gloria’s Syrah. In either case, you will
receive an email, at the address you provided, before the
release informing you about the wine and the release
party.
Our “pick-up parties” usually follow a pattern where you
receive an email a week or so before the event, so you can
plan your visit. Based upon your wine club membership
we will have your wine ready to pick at the release party
by taking care of any logistical issues ahead of time. This
means we will be charging your credit card that week,
allowing us time to contact you in the event your credit
card expiration date or number has changed, and still
have your wine ready for you when you visit. If we ship
wine to you, we will ship it to you that week,
weather permitting - based upon the route your
wine must travel to get to your shipping address.
If you come to the winery to pick up your wine,
we will usually be tasting one or more of that
wine club shipment selections in the cave or in
the courtyard. We try to have a new and unique
appetizer for our wine club release parties. So,
plan to spend a little time with us as you taste
the wine, and enjoy the amenities Reustle-Prayer
Rock Vineyards has to offer. If you are pressed for
time, simply let us know you are only here to pick
up your wine and we will get you going as quickly
as possible. Some of our wine club pick up days
are quite busy, so we appreciate your patience.
We have recently added a new feature to our website, a
membership management section. This new feature is a
place where you can log in to our secure server and make
housekeeping adjustments like changing a credit card
number, expiration date, shipping address, etc to your
membership. In addition, you can always call us at the
winery at (541) 459-6060 with any changes... we look
forward to hearing from you by telephone too.

FAQ
• What does SDG mean on the label? SDG is short for “soli deo gloria”, which translates from Latin to mean “to
God alone be the glory”. Stephen has always been a bit of a history buff and remembered that Johann Sebastien
Bach signed the bottom of all his sheet music SDG – “soli deo gloria”. Wanting to honor the Lord, Stephen
adopted this principle and each bottle of wine bears the mark SDG.
• What if I am not going to be home when my wine arrives? Give us a call or email us when you receive your
email about the upcoming wine club release. We can hold your shipment and you can have it shipped to you when
you return.
• Why haven’t I received my wine yet? Commonly, wine club members get a new credit card number or expiration
date that delays wine club shipments. The other most common cause is the weather – we do not ship when it is too
cold or too hot –along the UPS shipping route to your house.
• Can I swap my wine club shipment for another type of wine? Of course, just let us know as much in advance as
possible.
• Do you do weddings? Unfortunately, no. Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards values the institution of marriage
and support those who desire to wed. However, the site in which the winery is located does not support the
infrastructure needed to hold gatherings of this size and nature.
• Can I camp out overnight in my RV? No, at this time zoning prohibits use of the agriculturally zoned property
as a campground or recreational vehicle park.
• Do you have a café for lunch or dinner? No, while we have a limited availability of food items, in support of the
wine tasting, Oregon laws do not permit a winery and vineyard of our size to offer a restaurant.
• Are you kid friendly? Well-behaved children are a blessing to everyone. However, experts agree if children are
present during the wine tasting, the adults are not able to enjoy the full experience. With your mind splitting its
focus on the tasting and your child, you generally will rush through the tasting and not have a relaxing experience.
• Can I bring my dog? The winery has a Poodle – Syrah. On the other hand, maybe the poodle has a winery...
While we have no record of an incident with Syrah, there is always a potential for animals to disagree. Other leashed
dogs are permitted, but since Syrah lives here, we would prefer that he be allowed to greet guests and attend to their
needs for canine companionship.
• Can my service animal come in? Yes. The Americans with Disabilities Act provides that a service animal, an
animal specifically trained to perform a task for disabled person, be permitted in any public area. Service animals are
“Working animals” and not pets. Unless it interferes with their work, they must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered at
all times. Animals that provide companionship or emotional support are not included in the definition of “Working
animals” and are not permitted inside the facility. Further, animals that are out of control or not housebroken can
be required to leave. If your animal is not permitted inside, you will still be served in a more suitable outdoor area.
While you do not have to disclose the nature of the disability, you may be required to state what task the animal is
trained to perform.
• Why we don’t participate in the smaller, more local competitions? The answer is simple... to be recognized as
a world-class wine, you must compete on the world stage. By carefully analyzing each competition and strategically
selecting the competitions we enter, Stephen is able to place the Reustle label in front of international wine
professionals and renowned experts in the wine industry. Consistent high performance at the major competition
makes the “Wine-World” take notice of the wines we create here in the Umpqua Valley. Our consistent success at
this level is helping to make the Umpqua Valley the new wine-destination.
