1 2 3 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 July 2015 Dear Parents, We approach the end of our third year at Holy Trinity and what a successful year it has been. All exams and assessments have been completed successfully. Pupils in Year 6 will know their SATS results by now and we await news of GCSE results in August. I will write again next half term to give you an overview of how we did in our results but I can tell you that we have maintained our good levels of attainment in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 and our Key Stage 2 results have improved again. This year 77% of our pupils achieved a level 4 or above in Reading, Writing and Maths, up 13% on 2014. This is great news and a big well done to our primary children and staff who have worked so hard to produce these results. That said, despite a lot of hard work, we are not expecting our results from Year 11 to be as high as they have been in recent years. I am sure you can appreciate that every year group is different and has its own strengths and weaknesses. This year our Year 11 had a higher number of pupils than usual who have struggled academically and so overall our results will be lower. There will however be lots of Year 11’s who will do very well and we look forward to seeing them all on results day in August. The Archbishop of York came to school to give out awards to our Young Leaders who have completed his award scheme. He was on very good form and said how much he had enjoyed listening to our students presentations on the work they had done serving others. It was a great evening and one that will live long in the memory. Years 5 and 6 performed their show “Oliver” at the end of term and it went down very well with pupils staff and parents. There were many memorable performances within it, many thanks to all who were involved in putting it on. The Leavers Prom was another great event, this year held at Burntwood Hotel with our leavers enjoying being together one last time, arriving in limousines, dressed in beautiful gowns and suits and the food and music helped the party go with a swing. To finish off their time in our Primary Phase, we will be having a special liturgy to mark our Year 6 moving on before they leave this week and they will enjoy a disco on Wednesday night. Our summer fair was a great success. There were lots of interesting stalls and games to take part in; Mrs Woodcock did the lion’s share of the organising. Many thanks to her and the team for a great effort in organising this great fund raising event. It has been a great year for Holy Trinity. We are well placed now to build on our successes. Thank you for all the support you have shown us this year. I do hope our students have a wonderful summer holiday and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Wednesday 2nd September. It has been very exciting to welcome our new Year 7 students and for them to have a taster of secondary school, before the summer break. It makes the September start far less daunting, as the children will already be familiar with the school and their new teachers. So far, it has been a very enjoyable time for staff and students alike! 2 2 1 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 Parking at School Year 7 Retreat Will all parents and carers who drive children to school please note the following important information. The six parking bays nearest to the school main entrance are needed for our pupils with physical disabilities to get to and from school each day. Please respect their need before you consider parking in these spaces. The new Year 7 students had their first experience of ‘Retreat’ at Holy Trinity when they joined the school for a two week transition period. relationships within their form groups and then spent some time reflecting on the theme: ‘You are the light of the world.’ The Hallam Diocese ‘In-Reality’ Youth team led a one hour session with each of the Yr 7 House groups (Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Barachiel, Zadkiel) helping them to ‘understand their own importance and think about what their hopes and fears are for the future and the importance of moving forward with Faith and Joy.’ How would they let their light shine? The students enjoyed some fun activities, helping build their The long awaited parking enforcement contract should be starting soon, and the council have suggested that they come and do some snap inspections of blue badge holders who park in the disabled bays. An inspirational video by the ‘Kid President’ and the song ’Hall of Fame’ by ‘The Script’ – led the students to think about their hopes for the future – what would each of them bring to the community of Holy Trinity? Each student decorated a ‘light pledge card’, which was then added to the letters of the word ‘LIGHT’ – which will remain in Chapel. It should also be noted that holders of Blue badges who do not get out of their vehicle may be deemed to be misusing the badge. The barrier to the staff car park will be in use from September and the service buses will have changed to mirror the new school day so please consider how your children get to school to ensure that pedestrians on the school site are not put at risk by the vehicles driving onto the school site or by inconsiderate or unnecessary parking. 3 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 School Uniform Reminder Students are expected to be clean and tidy at all times and to wear the correct school uniform. At Holy Trinity we are doing our bit to encourage and protect British honey bees, which, over a number of years, have been in rapid decline. We have recently had three hives installed at school, thanks to the assistance of a number of staff and students, who have given up their own time to help construct the hives and frames, in preparation for the arrival of our bees. We have also acquired three queen bees, along with a number of worker and drone bees. The queens are now safely ensconced on their thrones and are settling in nicely. This year we will hopefully see a small quantity of honey produced by our bees, but by next year we could be harvesting up to 400lb of homeproduced Holy Honey! Whilst installing our own hives helps us to protect the bees, the bees also offer something to us in return (an example of mutualism). Many studies have shown the natural benefits of consuming locally produced honey and it has been medically proven that local honey can alleviate the symptoms of hay fever. We are also hoping this exciting new project will develop across the whole school, with crosscurricula activities and projects meaning that more of our students can be involved. Eventually, we will also need to design packaging and labels so we can retail the honey our bees have produced. Archbishop of York Young Leaders We were delighted again, to welcome the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu to Holy Trinity this month. The Archbishop presented students with their Young Leaders Awards; it was another fantastic evening, recognising the achievements of our Holy Trinity Superstars. 5 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 Holy Trinity’s ‘Super Sweet Treats’ Win at IKIC Awards Holy Trinity’s ‘Super Sweet Treats’ Team won the Best Primary School Level Business at the I Know I Can Big Challenge! The team included Roni Coupland, Lea Brammah, Latasha Cook, Lana Stroud, Hattie Andrews and Melody Hudspith. Their business idea was to create and bake tasty snacks and treats, which they then sold. Teams were judged on innovation, potential for future growth, profit and the overall quality of the pitch, which teams made to a panel of expert judges, made up of local business experts and advisors. The judges commented that the ‘Super Sweet Treats’ team showed a real understanding of the costs involved and how to make a profit. They also demonstrated attention to detail and a clear understanding of every team members’ roles and responsibilities, which allowed Super Sweet Treats to run a profitable business. Oliver! Our Primary Phase’s production of “Oliver!” was met with rapturous applause this week as it was performed to a packed house. Year 5 and Year 6 children gave some brilliant performances and made this a show to remember. In the title role, Nathan Charlesworth shone as the orphan Oliver. His performance of “Where is love?” left not a dry eye in the house; and his acting was convincing! Dominic Brennan was cast as Fagin, the miserly villain who takes Oliver under his and again this was another outstanding performance as he recited ‘Reviewing the Situation’ without fault. The cheeky Artful Dodger was played flawlessly by Sebastian Jones, who led the singing in many of the songs, including ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’ – his acting skills were superb. Other stand-out performances include Eleisha Thornton as Nancy, who graced the stage with a pitchperfect rendition of ‘OomPahPah,’ as well as a cockney accent; and Adam Stott who played the undertaker, Mr Sowerberry brilliantly in the style of Riff-Raff from The Rocky Horror Show! He was well-supported by Savannah Taylor as Mrs Sowerberry as they performed the tricky number, “It’s Your Funeral.” Finally, Ben Cartwright played the endearing Mr Bumble who acted the part brilliantly; ably supported by Francesca Jones as Widow Corney. All in all, the words of Headteacher Simon Barber sum up the show: “I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Oliver! It was lovely to see our stage being used so well and the quality of acting and singing and costumes was amazing….in particular, the quality of the boys involvement was superb and what beautiful singing! Thanks again, I had a brilliant time and the experience will live with the children involved for ever I’m sure.” 6 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 Holy Trinity Summer Fayre Our Summer Fayre this year was a brilliant day, raising over £2600! Thanks to everyone who helped and came along to made it such a success. In Memory of Gill It’s been a year since the sad passing of Gill Connolly, who was a teacher at St Dominic’s and who was a fundamental part of setting up our foundation stage. In Gill’s memory, staff recently took part in a sponsored walk around school grounds, which raised £80 for Barnsley Hospice. They also planted a tree to commemorate Gill’s contribution to both St Dominic’s and Holy Trinity Schools. Comings and Goings We are saying goodbye to a number of staff this year. Mrs Hilary Charlesworth is retiring after teaching at St Dominic’s for 20 years and at Holy Trinity for the last three. Hilary has been a great servant to St Dominic’s and our school community, she puts herself out to help and support pupils in her class and anyone else who she thinks might need it and her dedication to our school has been wonderful to see. We wish Hilary well in her retirement and hope it is a long and happy one. We are also saying goodbye to Simon Baddeley and Kathryn Thomas from our English department, Paula Jackson from French, Louise Seagrave from Art and Janine Adams who has taught in Y6 and Y3 in our primary phase. From our support staff, we are saying goodbye to Clare King and Megan Toft. I would like to thank all of these teachers and teaching assistants for the hard work they have done for our school and for our pupils. We will miss them all and wish them all the best in their future careers. Free School Meals All pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive Universal Free School Meals. In addition to this, children from families receiving certain benefits are also entitled to Free School Meals. You can check entitlement and apply on the Council Website, at: https://www2.barnsley.gov.uk/services/education-learning-andchildcare/schools-and-colleges/free-school-meals All pupils who are entitled to receive Free School Meals also attract additional funding for school; the Pupil Premium. To ensure we are able to access this funding, we ask all parents of pupils who have a statutory entitlement to complete the form, so that this funding is given to us by the Government. 7 Holy Trinity Newsletter July 2015 Holy Trinity has been enjoying some amazing success with our various sports teams in both the Primary and Secondary Phases.
