You are cordially invited to attend the dog park grand opening ceremony on June 29, 2008, at 9:00am. This is our opportunity to say “thank you” to the many sponsors and Parks & Recreation staff who have helped to make the park a reality. And, if you are one of our volunteers or donors, we want to say “thank you” to you too! The ceremony, with Mayor Mufi Hannemann presiding, will take about a halfhour. Dogs on leash are welcome at the ceremony. Please be aware that the park will not be open for off-leash use until noon. Immediately following the morning ceremony, the park gates will be opened so that our sponsors and government officials can take a tour of the park, and the media can take photos. All attendees are welcome to join the tour with their dogs on leash. After this special day, there will be unlimited opportunities for your dog to play offleash in the park, from dawn to dusk daily. In preparation for the park’s opening, we are training volunteers to serve as “park rangers” who will help monitor the park and assist new park users. Your dog can accompany you while you volunteer and will be an honorary ranger! If you would like to volunteer, please email [email protected] for more information. Dog Park Rules & Regulations It’s time to get ready for the dog park, and that means being aware of the City’s park rules and regulations. Even though the Hawai'i Kai Dog Park was built through a public-private partnership, it’s still a City park and we all must abide by the City’s regulations: 1. Off-leash parks are for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying them. No other use is allowed. 2. Dogs must be on leash when entering and exiting the off-leash park. 3. No handlers shall have more than two dogs under his/her control. 4. Handlers shall maintain voice control over the dog at all times. 5. Handlers must have control and must carry a leash while their dogs are in the off-leash park. 6. Dogs must be free of diseases and parasites such as fleas and ticks. 7. No dogs in estrus/heat are allowed in the off-leash park. 8. All dogs are required to wear a valid current dog license tag attached to the dog's collar. 9. All persons entering an off-leash park enters the off-leash park at his or her own risk. The City is not liable to any person or dog for any injury of harm incurred or caused by any other person or dog entering or remaining in the off-leash park. 10. Handlers shall carry equipment for the removal and disposal of dog feces. 11. Handlers shall pick up and dispose of any and all feces left by the dog. 12. Handlers shall be eighteen years of age or older. 13. Minors under the age of eighteen shall not be allowed in the off-leash park unless under the control and supervision of an adult. 14. Handlers shall immediately leash and remove the dog from the park if the dog exhibits aggressive behavior towards other park users or other dogs. 15. No food or animal snacks are permitted in the off-leash park. 16. All persons entering the off-leash park shall comply with all departmental rules and regulations, city ordinances and signs posted in the park. 17. Handlers must stop their dogs from digging and must fill all holes dug up by the dog(s) under their control And Is Your Dog Ready? Please take special note of these regulations so you and your dog will both be ready to enjoy the dog park: D If your dog doesn’t have a current license, you can get a license application at any Satellite City Hall or at the Hawaiian Humane Society. D Ensure your dog is on a flea and tick prevention program. Check with your vet to make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. D Remember that food or snacks are not allowed in the park (for people or dogs). Many dogs will fight over food dropped on the ground, even if they are wellbehaved and friendly the rest of the time. D You are legally responsible for your dog’s behavior. If you are not sure how your dog will react to a large number of strange dogs or people, the dog park is not the place to find out. Consult a trainer or behavior specialist; arrange “practice sessions” in a more controlled setting. Volume 1 Issue 9 Page 3 Dog Park Tips & Etiquette Here are a few tips that will help you and your dog have a safe and happy experience when you visit the dog park. This is the first of a series... D There is a double-gated entrance so you can unleash your dog before entering the park. Always close the outer gate first, unleash your dog, then open the inner gate to the small dog area (to the right) or large dog area (straight ahead). D It is not safe to carry your dog or leave him leashed after going through the second gate. Your dog will feel vulnerable and normal doggie greetings will be hampered. D Always carry your leash with you. Be prepared to leash your dog at the first sign of trouble. D Move away from the entrance so that newly-arriving dogs don’t feel overwhelmed by a large “greeting committee” waiting for them just inside the gate. D While in the park, your dog should wear a flat buckle-type collar with his license attached. Any other type of collar you might use to walk your dog – choke collar, prong collar, head halter or body harness - should be removed before you enter the park. These collars are not safe to wear while dogs are at play and could cause injury to your dog or his playmates. D Your dog should be responsive to ba- sic commands – at least “come when called,” “sit,” and “leave it/off” - so you can get control of him if necessary, and prevent him from harassing others. D Bring plastic bags to clean up after your dog. We will provide a poop bag dispenser for those who occasionally “forget” or need an extra bag, but we'll be counting on your donations to refill the dispenser. So whenever possible, please carry your own bags with you. D Some dogs like to play rough, others don’t. If your dog likes to play rough, be conscious that other dogs or their owners may not appreciate it. You may want to arrange “play dates” with dogs that have similar play styles. D Some dogs will tolerate dominant behavior from other dogs, such as “standing over” or mounting. Other dogs won’t put up with it. If you see your dog “bullying” or trying to hump another dog, stop him at once, even though you know he will not hurt the other dog. D It’s not a good idea to bring small children to a dog park, but if you must bring them with you, watch them carefully. Running/playing dogs can knock down small children as well as large adults. Children should not run, scream, chase, or tease the dogs because frightened dogs may become aggressive. Many dogs have never been socialized to children and may look upon a running child as prey! This man is about to be knocked off his feet by two fast running dogs at play. The dogs meant no harm, they were just having a good chase. Imagine what could happen to a small child! A dog park is no place for toddlers D If your dog gets “hyper” or overstimulated around other dogs or when he hasn’t had enough exercise, he may not be in the right frame of mind to join in doggie play. Although it might sound silly to say “exercise your dog before you come to the dog park,” this could be just the right solution for your dog. He’ll be a little calmer after a nice, long walk, and better able to socialize with other dogs. D Please help to keep our brand new, beautiful park clean and in good condition. It’s hard to watch your dog every second when she’s running around, but keep an eye out so you can pick up poop promptly! Ask your friends to share “poop patrol” duty with you. Take turns watching, and pick up after each other’s dogs. D Please don’t let your dog dig holes. If it happens, please repair the hole. What is the “Small Dog Park?” What is that enclosure in the front of the dog park? Some have guessed it’s a time-out area for naughty dogs. But no, it’s an area reserved for the little dogs. Although many small dogs are comfortable playing among their larger brethren (and they are most welcome to do so), others may be intimidated by the fast, rough play of bigger dogs. The Small Dog Park is a safe place for the tiny ones to play. A “small dog” is generally considered to be under 17 pounds, but you’re the best judge of where your dog will be most comfortable. You may have a slightly larger dog who is older and not active enough for the large park. If she has a calm temperament and doesn’t mind being jumped on by the little guys, she is welcome to join you in the small dog park. Mahalo to our Donors!
