Page 9 Calexico Approves Eminent Domain Plan For Chavez Blvd Expansion By Mario Conde The Calexico City Council approved several resolutions to allow the city to use eminent domain on properties along Cesar Chavez Boulevard for future expansion. In preparation to the opening of the new Calexico Port of Entry, the city of Calexico plans to expand Cesar Chavez Blvd. to four lanes and a fifth one for the port of entry and will install a stop light on the corner of Grant and Cesar Chavez. The goal is to put stop lights and create more lanes since the new port of entry will divert more traffic on Cesar Chavez Blvd. Calexico city staff has attempted to undertake negotiations with the property owners, but to date has not been able to secure a final agreement for the transfer of property by the way of negotiated agreement. City Attorney Mark Austin said that staff will continue to pursue discussion with property owners. Austin said the property owners have the right to appear and be heard on the matters. City Attorney said that property owners can bring their own appraiser to the city negotiations and will be reimbursed up to $5,000. Martha Rodriguez, property owner at Cesar Chavez Blvd., said she received the notice to negotiate with the city but said that what the city was offering was too low. Rodriguez mentioned that if the city takes part of her property it will take away parking from her area and will cause an inconvenience for her clients. Councilman Armando Real said that the city needs to move forward with this project since the new port of entry will create a positive economic benefit for Calexico and the business owners at Cesar Chavez Blvd. "Having the city take over parts of your properties will create an inconvenient but the value of your property might triple because of the new port of entry near it." Real said. Councilman Luis Castro said he was going to vote against this proposal since it would affect the business people around the area. Castro said he supports the new port of entry but he would not approve something that would affect businesses. Mayor Kim also stated his opposition and recalled his youth in Korea where eminent domain caused people to lose their homes. Kim said that is not right for government to come and take over the property of business owners. The Council voted 3-2 to approve it with Mayor Kim and Mayor Pro Tem Castro voting against it. The resolution needed a four vote majority to pass and did not meet the requirement. City Attorney Mark Austin explained that the city will continue the negotiations with the landowners and set a price that both parties can agreed upon and are not taking immediate actions to take over their property. With the explanation, Councilman Luis Castro changed his vote and the final vote ended 4-1 to pass. September Brawley Council Meeting To Address Planned Rate Increases By Chris Furguson The City Council of Brawley will be hosting a regularly scheduled meeting on September 15, 2015 at an undetermined location to discuss and possibly approve a five-year water and wastewater rate increase. The location of the meeting, likely the city's Lions Center, will need to accommodate a larger than expected audience. These rate increases, if PUBLIC WORKS CREWS are hard at work in Brawley to get crosswalks repainted and prepared for the upcoming school year. The department does this repair work every fall, just before students need them to safely make their way to classes. Chris Furguson Photo. passed by the council, would increase a single family's water and wastewater bill by nearly $37 by 2020. Water rates would rise by a total of 54% from the current rate and sewer fees would rise by 17% over the fiveyear plan. For a regular customer who uses 15,000 gallons of water a month, these proposed increases would raise their monthly water bill from $49.70 to $76.44 after five years and their sewer bills from $49.10 to $55.25 in 2020. While Brawley's council approved the proposal in July, the actual approval will come at the September 15 public hearing. A bilingual letter addressing the proposed rate increases was mailed to residents with July's utility bill. The proposed increases would put Brawley in the upper bracket of rate payers within Imperial County, third behind Imperial and Calipatria in water rates and El Centro and Holtville in sewer rates. The approved proposal did come with some difficulty as council member were hesitant to start an initial 18% increase in the city's water rate, favoring a gentler 11% increase for the first year. Rates would increase by 9% for the next three years before a 7% hike in 2020. For wastewater fees, increases would be 4% for the first two years, 3% for the following pair of years and 2% in 2020. The increases are required to keep both the programs solvent and to pay for capital improvement projects. The increases also compensate for water conservation efforts made by rate payers. The meeting is part of the state's Proposition 218 protocols passed in 1996 that requires a city to have a public meeting and discuss rate increases before implementing them. Calexico Schools Preparing For Students Return To Class By Mario Conde Summer is not over ‘til the bell rings. Calexico Unified School District teachers returned to work in preparation for the first day of school that will be on Monday, August 24. Students are currently enjoying their last week of vacation before returning to the daily routine of going to class every day. Tribune-Weekly-Chronicle Thursday, August 20, 2015 PAGE 02 “Brown Bag Coalition” Delivers Food To Calexico’s Homeless By Mario Conde Every day at around 7:30 p.m. dozens of homeless get food and water all thanks to the efforts of a group called Calexico Brown Bag Coalition. The volunteer efforts to help the homeless in Calexico are well known since the beginning of the year when shelters were installed for the homeless population in Calexico. Because of the freezing temperatures that affected our area back in December, members of Calexico High School Class of 1982 decided to look for ways to open a temporary shelter for the homeless. The shelters may have closed down in February, but the support for the homeless continued by providing meals for those that need it continues. Right after the closure of the shelters, the former tenants participated in the clean-up of public restrooms in Downtown Calexico and participated and other cleanup activities that are organized by the Class of '82. Activities such as these have created awareness and more support for the homeless population in Calexico and have given the homeless hope since know they have support and are willing to give back to the community by volunteering in cleanup activities. Friday night, Maribel Padilla and family arrived at the parking lot located 3rd and Heber and gave food to approximately forty people. After the meals are served they go to different points of the city and provide more meals. Among those that received food is Alfredo who works in the fields and is originally from Los Angeles. Alfredo was waiting to get the bus and take a trip to Arizona and work on the fields. "It's great to see them come over here and help us by giving us food." Alfredo said. Aside from the Padilla family, other volunteers groups of the Calexico Brown Bag Coalition donate their time to provide food such as "Las Hormiguitas de Jesus" who this past Monday gave thirty plates that included three bean with chorizo tacos, spanish fruit, water and juices. The awareness Calexico started by taking care of homeless has been taken as a model for other cities such as El Centro who are now looking how provide more services for homeless people. "What we are doing here is now being looked at by other cities in the Imperial Valley. What we are doing in Calexico is being replicated in Brawley and El Centro and that's a good thing." Padilla said. Anyone that would like to donate or sponsor meals they can contact the Calexico Brown Bag Coalition on their Facebook page or call Rick Leyva at 760-3129687. Calexico Police Officers To Begin Using Body Cameras On Patrol By Mario Conde The Calexico Police Department has joined the national trend of investing in body cameras that will be used by its officers beginning next week. Recent events in several cities across the United States involving police and law enforcement abuse has force police departments to purchase body cameras in order to bring more transparen- Imperial Valley Weekly Calexico Chronicle cy and make residents trust in their police officers once more. Calexico police officers have also been involved in alleged in officer-involved incidents such as the case of a former police officer that allegedly broke a female's nose while being arrested. That's why Chief Michael Bostic, with the approval of the City Council, purchased body camera equipment for the officers. Bostic announced that all officers will be wearing body cameras as the city approved the purchase of 42 body cameras to be used by the officers in order to bring more transparency and bring back trust to Calexico police officers. Chief Bostic explained that the body cameras will be recording at all times but the video footage will not be saved unless it's activated. The memory drive of the camera saves the footage that begins recording 30 seconds before activating. "The best part is that all of my officers want to have a body camera. That's something I've never seen in any other police department." Bostic said. Chief Bostic said he is working with the Calexico Police Officers Association to establish a policy that will guide police officers on how and where to use the body cameras. "These cameras will help us a lot with our internal investigations that can now be resolved faster thanks to these cameras." he added. Calexico join El Centro as the second city in Imperial Valley where their officers use body cameras. California cities such as Oakland have benefited from the use of body cameras since they started using them in 2009 and have seen a decline in police officer use-of-force complaints. (USPS 247-880) The Galvan family from Calexico announced their Second Annual Back Pack drive. The family will donate over 100 school backpacks to Calexico children. Calexico Neighborhood House in cooperation with the Calexico Resource Center will distribute the back packs on August 20th. Special appreciation is given to LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers, future hall of famer football player, for his backpack donation and for promoting the drive in his Facebook and twitter, as well as, to hometown hero First Class Christina Ramirez and National City Trophy for their continuous and generous contribution. This is the second year the Juan's Galvan family has taken it upon themselves to collect and distribute school backpacks in memory of their beloved on, Juan Galvan, who was born with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and as child attended Rockwood Elementary School in Calexico. Juan was a poster child for the Imperial Valley MDA Telethon. By the time Juan was in junior high school, he had lost the ability to walk. This setback did not discourage him from attending school and graduating from De Anza Jr. High. After junior high school Juan set out on his quest to conquer Calexico High School despite the prognosis of declining physical strength. While MD had an effect on his body, it never conquered his mind or heart. Juan vowed to have a positive impact on others. Juan's passion to help others prompted him to pursue a degree in Psychology from San Diego State University. Juan was never one to settle and this encouraged him to earn a Masters Degree from the University of Phoenix in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy. As a professional Juan worked for the State of California in the Department of Rehabilitation, achieving his goal of helping improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Despite the obstacles that Juan faced in life he met his goals, lived his dream, and enjoyed life to the fullest. On Thursday, August 20th family members will help distribute the backpacks to children at Calexico Rockwood Elementary School. South Palm Avenue, often called the "worst street in Brawley," is currently scheduled to begin full renovations on October 1, 2015 after years of complaints from residents and motorists. The street, riddled with potholes, cracks and loose chunks of asphalt, is in it's poor condition due to constant traffic from heavy vehicles. The street is known as a "major collector" and diverts traffic from Main Street to other important roadways like K street, and Malan Street on the south portion of the city and River “BRAWLEY’S WORST STREET,” South Palm Avenue, is expected to begin renovations sometime in October, barring any unforseen delays in funding. Photo by Chris Furguson. Drive and B street to the north. Heavy vehicles, such as semitrucks with trailers, Imperial Transit's large buses and work trucks from the nearby CalTrans yard, abuse the street along with the higher than average regular vehicle traffic. The status as a "major collector" allows for special federal funds to be used on the project. The project itself has a deadline of September 31, 2016, but work is expected to start in October, the start of the federal fiscal year. North Palm Avenue, running from River Drive to Main Street, will be worked on as part of the city's scheduled Phase 10 improvements approved earlier this year by the city council. Work is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. The second project, Alyce Gereaux Park, has completed their design phase and is going to to bid before the end of the year. According to Brawley City Manager Rosanna Moore, the project will begin construction in the first quarter of 2016 and has a timeframe of 12 to 18 months. Alyce Gereaux Park, located north of J.W. Oakley in the northeast part of Brawley, was originally the subject of a nearly $5 million grant application in 2010. That figure was reduced to $2.7 million when the grant was awarded, pending a completion by 2019. Design features for the renovated Alyce Gereaux Park will include: * A splash pad with lighting and security features. * New lit multi-use athletic field (youth soccer) * New lit pedestrian trail/walking path * New drought tolerant garden and landscape areas * New picnic area * New accessible playground * Renovated basketball courts Rights Group Offering Help For Alleged Victims Of Abuse By Calexico Police By Mario Conde In an effort to give orientation and support for individuals that have been abused by law enforcement officers, a local non-profit group has been established to help residents file their complaints. The Human Rights Community Group, a volunteer organization based in Calexico, started this year with the goal to support people from both sides of the border that have been a victim of abuse or discrimination by Customs and Border Protection or the local police officers. For Jesse Gallardo, president of the organization, it is important for people to know their rights when facing a situation that involves law enforcement officials. Gallardo, a Calexico business owner, has also been victim of abuse by law enforcement officials in the past as well as people closed to him. That's what motivated Gallardo to create this group that would give people resources on how to denounce abuse. "People are afraid of making a complaint because they fear retaliation." Gallardo said, "Our goal is to make this a nonprofit entity with the trust of the community and that law agents understand that they are being watched by a non-political group that just wants transparency." The group is doing this on a volunteer basis and has already received thirty complaints that are currently being look at and be sent to the proper authorities. Gallardo said that two of the most frequent cases include are sexual harassment and humiliation. Gallardo said that group has approached other community agencies to gather support for this cause. "We had a meeting about three months ago with the Calexico Police Chief and he was all on board. Mr. Bostic does want to make a difference in Calexico but I believe he can't move forward if he is not sure he has the job secure. After he becomes permanent, we will be able to get together in one meeting with all agencies involved." he stated. Gallardo said that the main focus of the group is to orientate people and not follow or harass law enforcement agents. "We advise on what is the best course of action for people. When doing an official complaint, there is a legal and appropriate process. It is kind of long but worth it so that supervisors and people in Washington can start noticing a difference." Gallardo said that the community group orientates all people regardless of their legal status, if they live in the Imperial Valley, or coming as tourist. The next step for the group is to become a non-profit organization. Anyone with that could like to contact the group to file a complaint or get information they can do so by e-mail at [email protected] or visit them at their office located at 408 E. Second Street. The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m., when Border Patrol agents encountered the driver of a 2002 Buick Park Avenue at the checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the vehicle. Agents referred the driver to secondary inspection for further examination. Agents discovered 10 packages of methamphetamine and two packages of heroin concealed in the vehicle's frame rails. The methamphetamine weighed 11 pounds with an estimated street value of $110,000 and the heroin weighed 4.84 pounds with an estimated street value of $58,000. The man, a 30-year-old Lawfully Admitted Permanent U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station arrested a previously deported convicted sex offender near the downtown area approximately 18 miles east of the Calexico port of entry on August 13, 2015. The 37-year-old man was apprehended by Border Patrol agents when he attempted to illegally enter into the United States. Agents later identified the man as Jose Adrian Sanchez-Martinez, a citizen of Mexico. Criminal record checks revealed that Sanchez is a convicted sex offender, convicted of rape of a child in the second degree out of the state of Washington. CHP Sobriety Checkpoint This Weekend The El Centro Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will conduct a sobriety/driver license checkpoint on August 21, 2015, somewhere within the unincorporated area of Imperial County. The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated or unlicensed drivers. A sobriety/driver license checkpoint is a proven effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations. By publicizing our efforts we believe that we can deter motorists from being intoxicated or unlicensed while driving a motor vehicle. Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked for drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs or driving unlicensed. Our objective is to send a clear message to those individuals that consider mixing alcohol or drugs and/or driving unlicensed-"The CHP will be keeping a close eye out for you." Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Classes started this week in Calexico and El Centro as school starts earlier and earlier and runs later and later, thus shortening up what used to be a long summer vacation. School ends around June 15th and with classes starting up August 20th. It makes for only a 10 week summer vacation. If that much. Back in the good old days, we would get vacation time that lasted from the Memorial Day to Labor Day, making for an exceedingly long time to be underfoot for our parents. But for us kids it was a great time to play and be involved in lots of outdoor activities. There were games in the park and swimming, trips downtown to the department stores and more swimming at the YMCA. Infact, that’s where I got my first swimming lessons. That I can still swim today is a credit to the skills of teachers and my own retention values. So, as the students hit the books and try real hard not to look out the window at the passing of another year, we must all turn our attention to getting back to work with the same feelings. School is shortening up the long, hot summer! Brawley Elementary Schools To Stop Busing Students In Upcoming Year By Chris Furguson Brawley Elementary students won't have to travel far to attend their Fall classes as the school district is ending their controversial busing program this coming year. The district, aided by studies that show more diversity among ethnic and economic lines in each section of the city, will no longer move students across town for classes. This led to individual schools being separated by K-3 and 4-6 grade levels, with a rotating schedule depending on population and incoming students. Instead of busing, a program of “neighborhood schools” will be enforced, where students will attend one school from kindergarten to 6th grade, before moving on to Barbara Worth and the high school. The busing program, which began thirty-five years ago, was in response to concerns from Los Angeles County teachers and parents that location and local populations were being used by the school districts to discriminate against poorer and ethnic neighborhoods. At the time, Brawley was listed as one of the major offenders of this policy. In response, students began being bused back and forth across town. As a byproduct of this change, some parents who were angered by the policy began enrolling their children in private schools. The process for removing the busing system began in 2012 when the school board hired consultants to determine population boundaries for a proposed school near the Wal-Mart shopping area. Surveys conducted by consultants and other parties determined that the problems in ethnic and economic divisions that plagued Brawley weren’t in place. This led the Board to decide on removing buses. The biggest savings for the district will be on not requiring bus drivers and a lower demand for fuel. Brawley’s elementary level teachers have been preparing over the summer for their new classes. Summer school programs, save for one at Hidalgo Elementary, were all canceled and the start of the school delayed an additional week. Brawley Elementary School students will start classes on Monday, August 31, one week after most schools start their school years. Tribune- Weekly-Chronicle Thursday, August 20, 2015 PAGE 06 Imperial County Superior Court Program Holtville Vessey & Co Owners Recognized By State Senator To Round Up Jury Duty Delinquents The Superior Court of California, County of Imperial announced on August 19, 2015 the beginning of a tougher new program to round up persons who willfully fail to respond to their jury summons, thereby enforcing the penalties that California law allows for those refusing to serve. Court Executive Officer and Jury Commissioner, Tammy L. Grimm, stated: "The Court's goal is to ensure that jury service is shared by all eligible citizens of Imperial County, as mandated by the State Legislature. Trial by jury is a cherished constitutional right and jury service is an obligation of citizenship. It is only fair that the obligation be shared by all citizens, not just those who faithfully answer the call to serve." California has made jury service much easier in recent years with the one-day or onetrial program. Unfortunately, Imperial County has one of the lowest juror and response rates in the entire state. It is not uncommon for the Court to send out 1300 summons, with only 30% or less appearing or answering the notice. Experience has shown that many citizens simply do not understand how important their service is to the smooth functioning of the jury system, and many who initially fail to appear ultimately make perfectly good jurors and end up enjoying their service, feeling they gave back to the community. Given the number of trials in Imperial County as of late, and the need to increase the pool of potential jurors, the Court must now focus on tracking down prospective jurors who ignore their summonses to report for duty. Although offered numerous chances to report or explain why they cannot serve, many residents continue to discard or ignore their jury summons. Yet, California law allows judges to fine or even jail jurors who refuse to serve, and judges in Imperial County are toughening up on enforcement of these penalties. Therefore, under the Court's new program, citizens who fail to appear for jury service may be held in contempt of court, which is punishable by fine and/or incarceration. Or the court may impose reasonable monetary sanctions in lieu of a finding of contempt. If a person does not respond to the initial jury summons, the court will send a second notice. If the summoned juror does not respond to that second summons, then the juror will be served with an order stating that the nonresponsive juror must come to court to appear before a Judge at an Order to Show Cause hearing regarding why he or she should not be fined. Should a person fail to appear at the hearing, the court will issue a warrant for his or her arrest. When the first jury summons arrives, the Court urges recipients of the notice to respond. If the summonsed juror has a valid reason for postponing service or a legal reason to be excused, the reason can be written on the summons in the blanks provided and mailed back to the Court. "The Court's goal is to gain compliance rather than sanction non-responsible jurors and to impress upon local citizens the importance of jury duty. The more jurors reporting for jury duty, the less frequently jurors will be called for service, the faster trials can move forward, and the better our system of justice will operate," CEO/Court Jury Commissioner Grimm stated. "We all live in a justice system that permits a jury of our peers. We need to have a sufficient pool of all qualified residents to ensure that this right is being protected during trials." Tribune-Weekly-Chronicle Thursday, August 20, 2015 PAGE 07 Searching For Great Pizza Within The Borders Of Imperial County By Phil Mestomack Back from a long vacation, Phil Mestomack is back to find out who has the best pizza in Imperial County. Pizza. The word brings a different feeling to every person, usually based on personal tastes and regional affiliations. People in New York, for example, prefer a pizza that has a thin crust and thin layer of toppings. Chicago-style pizza fans, on the other hand, prefer a casserolelike pie with a flaky crust with lots of meat and cheese topped with tomato sauce. Those in California usually prefer unusual toppings, like barbecue chicken and spinach, along with the usual pepperoni and mushroom. Each one isn't wrong in their preferences, however, and there are enough ways to make and eat pizza that can satisfy every discerning and undiscriminating palette. Popularized after World War II by returning soldiers who served in Italy, pizza shops began popping up in ethnic neighborhoods before becoming a national thing, rivaling the hamburger as America’s favorite food. THIS PEPPERONI PIZZA from George’s Pizza in Holtville features a thick crust along with the usual cheese and sauce. A TWELVE INCH Inferno Pepperoni Pizza has a thin crust. The Brawley restaurant’s pizza will cost $14. Phil Mestomack Photos. The vast majority of pizza served in the United States comes from the national franchise chains, consisting of bland, doughy discs covered in generic cheese and topped with the easily recognizable red discs of meat. These can be purchased already prepared and kept hot for a few dollars at the local franchise of the national pizza chain. While these may make for a cheap meal for a small family, they do fall under the problem being the exact same thing as everywhere else. No matter where you go in the world, a pizza from one of these chains will taste the same as one from another. Recently, some specialty pizza shops have begun opening in Imperial County. Offering a different experience than the same old thing most of us are used to, these places specialize in different textures, ingredients or cooking methods to create their products. This week, we will compare three such pizza restaurants: Inferno and Crumbs Pizzeria in Brawley and George’s Pizza in Holtville to determine who has the better pie. Inferno Calling itself an "artisan eatery," Inferno's menu has a taste of the unusual with the typical. Featuring burgers and pasta along with their pizzas and salads, Inferno claims to "ensure an exceptional dining experience like nowhere else in the Imperial Valley." The décor inside Inferno is described as "vintage industrial" and features large heavy tables and wood floors with brick wall along the sides. A pizza oven can be seen towards the back of the restaurant near the bar. The pizza served at Inferno resembles the "wood fired" pizzas in most upscale eateries around California The pizza: Inferno’s pizza was a hot, wood-fired pie with a very thin crust and a thin layer of Five Ways To Improve Fire Safety An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness. Here's five things you can do to increase your chance of survival in a fire: · Install smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas. Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months and replace batteries in spring and fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half! · Have a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows and doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911). Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after safely outside. · When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone wool insulation, like that produced by Roxul, resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 F. When directly exposed to fire, it will not off-gas, contribute to toxic smoke or promote flames. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count. · Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits. · Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces and in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate your home and call for help. Fire prevention measures are a serious matter in every home. Find out how to keep your home and family safe at nfpa.org or improve your fire safety knowledge by visiting the Roxul website. sauce and toppings. While very hot at first, but edible, the pie was easy to eat due to the thickness of the crust. However, the main ingredient was the house red sauce and not the cheese or the pepperoni. As the pie cooled, the ingredients began soaking into the very thin crust, but not to the point of reaching “soggy.” Cost: The single-serving pepperoni pizza (12 inches) at Inferno costs $14. With a drink and a tip, expect to pay around $20 for the meal. Crumbs Pizzeria Advertised as being so good "crumbs are all that's left," Crumbs serves pasta, chicken wings and other sports bar fare alongside their New York-style pizzas. Crumbs Pizzeria's décor is typical of most Italian-American restaurants of the 1950s and 1960s. Red checker tablecloths cover most of the tables, while the large television screens and well-stocked bar brings the atmosphere of an American sports bar. The Pizza: Unfortunately, the summer hours for Crumbs Pizzeria made it ineligible for inclusion in this survey. Cost: According to their online ordering service, a 12-inch New York-style pepperoni pizza from Crumbs will run around $10. George’s Pizza A Holtville institution, the atmosphere inside George’s Pizza was revamped after a water damage from a nearby fire put the establishment out of business for a few weeks. Inside, except for some painted walls, the environment is entirely in the McClure- style of owners George and Blanca. Did the fire affect the pizza that keeps Holtville residents coming back? The pizza: A small pepperoni pizza at George’s (around 14 inches in diameter), this modern oven fired pie is intended to be eaten after a trip home and not immediately out of the box. Once properly cooled, the pie is pretty standard, with an adequate amount of sauce and cheese to go with the pepperoni. The crust resembles French bread more than pizza dough, with a resilient exterior and soft, chewy interior. At hot to warm, the crust firms up enough to hold the toppings without difficulty. This pizza will feed more than one person easily. Cost: A small pepperoni pizza (without beverages) will cost around $10 at George’s. Verdict: While it’s unfortunate that Crumbs Pizzeria is not in the running, the circumstances are what they are. That said, there aren’t going to be any winners in this survey. When it comes to pizza, personal preference has to take over. However, if you’re looking for advice on where to go, we have that in spades. If you’re looking for a single dining experience that includes a personal pizza, Inferno might be the better option in terms of atmosphere and customer service. If the goal is a filling pizza that will feed more than one person in the house or party, George’s might be the better place to be. Happy Eating! Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities. Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can do just that. · Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won't need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists to parents before back to school season hits full swing. · Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids' backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year's inventory that much easier to examine and assess. · Spend more now to save later. While inexpensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won't withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replacement supplies. Paying more now for certain items, including stronger backpacks and more highly rated calculators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow. · Use technology to your advantage. Department stores and businesses that sell school supplies, such as pharmacies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy parents can still find deals by using technology to their advantage when shopping for school supplies. Download apps like RetailMeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone essentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store. If you don't receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don't learn of the deals until you arrive at the store. School supplies can be expensive, but parents can employ several strategies to save on school supplies now and in the future. THE SIMPLEST TIPS can save you in the long run when shopping for your children’s school supplies. Simplifying The Transition Into College Life College is the first taste of true independence many young students experience. Whereas mom and dad were always around to make sure kids were out the door on time and homework was done, that safety blanket is no longer there once kids move into their dorm rooms. The transition to college life can be exciting. But while students typically welcome that transition with open arms, parents often worry about how their children will handle their suddenly more independent life. Parents who want to help their kids make as smooth a transition to college life as possible can take steps during their children's senior year of high school to help them adjust to their new surroundings and responsibilities more easily. · Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn't around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves. · Teach kids how to develop budgets. Another problem many first-year college students encounter is an inability to effectively manage their money. Whether you plan to give kids an allowance while they are in school or intend for them to work part-time for their spending money, use senior year of high school as an opportunity to show kids how to budget their money. If they don't have accounts already, open bank accounts in your youngster's name, and insist that he or she start paying for his or her expenses via these accounts. Resist the urge to give high school kids gas money or money for shopping trips if they have already spent their allowances so they can learn how to effectively manage money between paydays. In addition, teach kids about the right and wrong ways to use credit cards, including the importance of paying balances in full and on time. · Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor's appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food. · Emphasize time manage- ment. Today's high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping. The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and difficult. But parents can get a head start on that transition by encouraging their youngsters to be more independent during their final year of high school. Making Each School Morning Less Hectic For Parents And Kids School day mornings can be hectic, as getting kids ready for school and out the door on time is not always easy. Working parents may find school day mornings especially difficult, as their own work schedules can make mornings feel even more rushed. Fortunately, parents can employ several strategies to free up time in the morning so everyone starts their days off in a more relaxing atmosphere. • Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but waking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from weekday mornings without costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal wakeup time, PARENTS CAN TAKE several steps to make sure that each school day morning goes more smoothly. using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to shower or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz with activity. • Tackle certain chores the night before. Delaying certain chores until you wake up makes for a hectic morning, so tackle as many morning chores as possible before you go to bed for the night. Prepare school lunches, lay clothes out for yourself and your children, and make sure kids have their backpacks packed and ready to go before they go to bed. Each of these things may only take a few minutes, but when left for the morning, they can add up to a substantial amount of time. • Encourage youngsters to pick up the pace. Some people are morning people, while others dread setting their alarms for early morning hours. Kids who fall into the latter group may drag their feet in the morning, but parents should offer encouragement when kids are moving slowly in the morning. Allowing your frustration to show may only make kids less fond of mornings, so remind them as nicely as possible that everyone has a schedule to stick to if they seem to be dragging their feet. • Keep the television off. If watching the television is ingrained in your morning routine, try going a few days without it to see if this makes it easier to get out the door on time. Kids might grow distracted by morning cartoons, and even adults may get caught up in morning news shows or other forecasts. Eliminating television from your morning routine can save time and also may help your family grow closer, as you will have more distraction-free time to speak to one another. In addition to turning off the television, resist the urge to turn on your devices or scan work emails when getting ready in the morning. Parents know that school day mornings can be hectic. But there are several ways to make such mornings go more smoothly so everyone gets where they need to be on time. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auc- tioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
