SILVER EXPRESS
FEBRUARY 2015

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
We had a great time Saturday, January 24th, at the SFBWC practice session and Holiday Party. The turnout at
the practice session was amazing and a little overwhelming. In the future, please RSVP with me so we know
how many people and dogs to expect. We were also shocked that the price of training birds had gone up to
$17 each and Hastings only had 21 birds, of which we purchased 17. We are limited at Hastings - we cannot
bring in our own birds for training, which we could get elsewhere cheaper. They are quite strict about that.
All that confusion aside, everyone seemed to have a great time and I have gotten some personal emails to that
effect. Thanks very much to my right and left hands: Bruce running the beginners and Dan running the
advanced dogs. We could not do the practice sessions without them. There were some great moments that I
am aware of: Daisy Mae running across the field and back into an advanced brace of two dogs to help them
find the birds; four month old Keely going on point on the bird for the first time; and 11 year old Gina going to
retrieve the bird and ignoring the handler (me) and running all the way back to her Mom (Arlene) with the bird
proudly in her mouth. I am sure there were other stellar moments, so please write about them either here, or
send them to Arlene for the newsletter.
We also had a great time at the Holiday Party at Mary's Pizza Shack in Dixon. Bruce played Santa in our Kris
Kringle gift exchange, even wearing a SF Giants Santa hat, with his assistant elf Debbie. We all had a good
meal, conversation, mini-club meeting, and left with gifts that we liked. Since this is our second time holding
our Holiday Party at Mary's, this might become an annual tradition.
We are looking at holding our next SFBWC practice day at Hastings Island Saturday March 21 starting at 9:00 am.
Cost will be $25 per dog. If I am in China then, Bruce, Debbie and Dan will carry on without me. We should have
plenty of people out there with their new dogs and introducing them to birds. Please RSVP to
[email protected].
I am headed to Nevada later this week for training and to hunt wild Chukar in the hills above Yerington. We
are used to pen raised Chukars which are not the brightest birds, but in their natural and wild state in places
such as Idaho and Nevada, they are actually quite wily and difficult to hunt as you can spend all day tracking
them at high elevations, up and down gullies. Both Sophia and Ruger are excellent at tracking and managing
birds on the run, so I am looking forward to the challenge.

AKC EXPANDS THERAPY DOG TITLING PROGRAM
In an effort to honor the thousands of therapy dog teams that make a difference in the lives of others daily, the
American Kennel Club® (AKC®) has added four new titles to the popular AKC Therapy DogTM program.
In addition to the AKC Therapy Dog (ThD) title (awarded after 50 visits), the AKC now offers:
AKC Therapy Dog Novice (ThDN) – Awarded after 10 visits
AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (ThDA) – Awarded after 100 visits
AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (ThDX) – Awarded after 200 visits
AKC Distinguished Therapy Dog (ThDD) – Awarded after 400 visits
“The AKC heard from many dog owners whose dogs had already earned the ThD title and who wanted
additional formal recognition of their ongoing commitment to volunteering to help others. We’re pleased to
expand the AKC Therapy Dog program as a result of these requests,” said Doug Ljungren AKC Sports and
Events. “We’ve also added a way to acknowledge beginning therapy dogs, hoping that this will encourage even
more dogs and owners to participate in therapy dog work.”
Dogs who are registered and approved by recognized therapy dog organizations may apply to earn the AKC
Therapy Dog titles, which will be listed on the dog’s AKC title record. Any dog, including mixed breeds, can
earn AKC Therapy Dog titles as long as the dog is AKC-registered, listed with AKC Canine Partners or
enrolled in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program. AKC does not train or certify therapy dogs.
Applications for the new titles will be accepted with titles awarded beginning July 1 st, 2014. To apply for a
title or learn more about the AKC Therapy Dog program, visit http://www.akc.org/dogowner/therapy/index.cfm

Our AKC Hunt Test scheduled for the weekend of January 31 was cancelled due to a low number of entrys. It’s
hard to compete with the Super Bowl! Dionne thanks everyone who volunteered to work during the 2 days. We do
have another Hunt Test scheduled for the end of August and we hope for a good turnout. That will give us all more time
to work with our dogs.
If you missed watching the Westminster Dog Show on television, you can see all the action on their website at
www.westminsterkennelclub.org . The video of the Weimaraner judging is just like being at the show so be sure to take
a look. On the right of the first screen, go to FINAL RESULTS, then BREED RESULTS, then WEIMARANER (you will see the
names of the winners, CLICK HERE TO WATCH VIDEO, then scroll down the list to WEIMARANERS. The winner was GCH
Doc’s Greyborn North Star of Acadia (who was also the WCA National Champion at the Specialty in 2014). There are also
many other great videos on this site.
It is once again almost time for annual elections of officers for our club. Bruce Gross has been appointed the chairman
of the nominating committee and elections for the new fiscal year will take place in April. Our current slate of officers
have all agreed to stay on for another year (see the last page of this newsletter) except for our President Martha Zimet
who has nominated Dan McDermitt for the office of President. Martha has given SFBWC three years of excellent
leadership and will stay on as a board member in Dan’s former position. Should any club members wish to nominate
anyone else as an officer or board member, please contact Bruce Gross at [email protected] no later than March 15.
Please consider coming to our WEIMARANER FUN DAY on April 18. We want to hold an old fashioned “Weimaraner Get
Together” to introduce you and your dog to various activities to determine if they interest you. Be sure to RSVP and
Debbie will have the approximate times for each activity if you don’t want to stay all day. Please invite your friends who
have Weimaraners.
THE WEIMARANER BOOKSHELF
This month we want to tell you about a book written by two long time
Weimaraner owners. The book is a bit pricy but if you can find one in a
used book store, it will be a prize.
RAISING A CHAMPION, A
BEGINNERS GUIDE TO
SHOWING DOGS
Synopsis: Whether you're new to showing dogs, or are a breeder sending a
show puppy to a new home, here's an award-winning book that will help get
your show puppy off to a great start! Raising a Champion is the complete
handbook for people who show their own dogs! Raising a Champion has
complete, detailed and fully illustrated instructions! Twenty five chapters
contain step-by-step information about training for and competing in the
show ring. The FAQs answer questions that every handler asks at some time. Counting championship points is
carefully explained and illustrated with dozens of worked examples
About the Author: Meredith John and Carole Richards are breeders, trainers, teachers and handlers, each with
more than 35 years of competing in dog sports. Between them, they have earned more than 50 AKC
conformation championships with a variety of breeds, as well as titles in obediene, agility, tracking and field
events. Carole is also a dog show judge and writes the Weimaraner column for the AKC Gazette.
WINDI’S FAMILY
I’ve heard folks call me a brazen hussy! I will admit, I like the boy dogs but I have always had my eyes on Chief – he is my
favorite! We are are both show champions and have titles in agility, obedience, barn hunt, hunting & scent work – our
hip OFA’s are Excellent and Good - so we were thrilled when Debbie and Bruce looked at our pedigrees and decided that
we would produce the next Rockville pups which would be designated the “San Francisco Giants Baseball Team” litter
Since Chief and I are both owned by Debbie and Bruce, we decided on a back yard affair! When I came into season,
Debbie marked the calendar figuring my breedable time. I flirted with Chief whenever he was out in the yard with me,
but he was not interested until the 14th day. He knew best when the scent was right. He was correct because in a few
weeks my body started to feel different as my hormones began to change. At 30 days after
our breeding, I was taken to the Vet for an ultrasound which showed there were 9 or 10 and
maybe more little creatures in my belly! Since they were packed pretty tight, it was hard to
count them all. Wow – we were excited! After a few more
weeks, I was rapidly losing my svelte shape and starting to
look like a watermelon! I was getting more to eat and felt
strange movements and my instincts told me to find a quiet
out-of-the-way spot. I checked out the toybox, the laundry basket, and several other
spots. Meanwhile Bruce had set up a whelping box which I soon realized was probably
the best place for my pups.
Now the big wait. We knew approximately when the
pups would come, but my body would not be rushed.
Finally on Thursday, January 15 at 8:25 pm, my first
puppy was born. The pups took their time in arriving
and the last one was not born until midnight the
following day! Wow, was I tired and so were Debbie,
Bruce and Sandra Sue who was Debbie’s sidekick
helping the whole way and who all made sure the
pups arrived safely. They were big pups, all healthy
and active and I am so proud of them. All I wanted to
do was take care of them. My milk came in and I was
so busy keeping them nursed, clean and warm that I forgot how tired I was! Their
tails were docked and dewclaws removed a few days later and “Aunt Sandy” was with us once again to comfort and
help.
Let me tell you a little about my pups! They are identified by the color of the yarn collar that they wear. Their birth
weight is below and they had significant gains daily. Since I only have 7 nipples, the pups were divided up so I nursed 5
and then 4 at a time. I had plenty of milk so in no time they were little butterballs! In one week they doubled in size.

Their personalities quickly started to appear and several of the pups showed “characteristics” of a
couple of San Francisco Giants baseball players! At 11 days pink started to open her eyes and the
others followed within a few days. Now the very cute stage starts with the pups, fat and sassy,
starting to walk, tottering around and beginning to play. Before long, they were trying to get out of
the whelping box. I was very busy – Chief, on the other hand, was outside dreaming of the day
when the pups were grown!
Since the pups had teeth, weaning began at 3 ½ weeks. My “milk bar” welcomed another
food source for the pups and I got some needed rest not far away but outside of the
whelping box . Puppies now had breakfast of goats milk from a dish, then the big round
pan, then moved to the new feeding station of individual dishes
and were soon on a raw diet, but they still want Mom’s milk
bar. The pups love to lay on their backs and snuggle. They
have had their nails clipped which made my “milk bar” less irritated.
My food was limited so my milk would dry up but I still want to nurse
the pups. Bruce set up the puppy playpen and the pups were moved
out of the whelping box into the playpen with a potty area and with
toys and obstacles for them to experience. They now also get to go to
the puppy agility area in the big dog room. They have so many new
things to experience and they love it. Their yarn collars were replaced
with big puppy collars. They have had their first sniff of a bird wing
and began to experience a lot of handling, lap time and snuggles from frequent visitors. They have gone outside and
love to explore. I still love taking care of them but have to jump on the table on the patio to keep them from nursing!
They are growing up soooo fast.
I will continue the story of my family in the next newsletter. There is still a lot for the pups to learn before they go to
their new homes.

TRAINING GAMES:
The following are two “training games” that provide both a mental and physical
workout for your dog (and you too).
WILD SITS: First of all, your dog should be taught the concept of SIT. Put your dog on a leash and run around
with him, cheering, jumping up and down – basically getting the dog excited. In mid romp say “SIT”. If he
won’t obey or is reluctant to sit, use a treat to entice him into a sit position. He probably won’t obey the first
few times but after a little practice he will be able to go from acting hyper to sitting patiently on command.
Do this several times - Dog and owner are getting a cardio workout! This exercise teaches the dog to listen to
you while in a state of hyperactivity so he can pull himself back into a response. This is good training for a dog
who “goes nuts” when the doorbell rings.
CARDIO TWIST: This concept is similar to weave poles in Agility. Set up “poles” in a row using chairs, orange
cones, whatever you have, resembling a slalom course in skiing. Put dog on leash and instruct him to “heel” at
your left side as you weave in and out between the “poles”. Change pace “fast” and “slow”. The dog will have
to concentrate on following you as you change directions and adjust to your fast and slow pace. To order
actual weave poles, go to www.jjdog.com
