Melisa isssue_2// page 3 E EGAT A DEL Fashion Police: “Oh, dear Lord!” What Session would this be if there was no article referring to delegates’ fashion style. It was the first day of the session and my eyes just couldn’t believe it! It can’t be right. Why were you so stylish, people? Delegates know the rules of forming a successful outfit during team-building. Surely, delegates had been informed of the presence of a fashion police officer. Otherwise, there is no explanation for the outstanding style choices. You little monsters!!! Now what am I suppose to write in order to “mess up” the session a little bit and start laughing at each other and finally see some “bad actions”!? (L.V.: Start with you, your majesty!) But you shouldn’t be so happy my dearest little friend, for some of them didn’t listen to what you were saying and the BITCH got them (L.V.: such an event to celebrate...), and at last she got something to write for! (L.V.: where is the “thank god” here? She always says that, too.) Have you seen a girl shooting so many photos and going around the building like crazy dressed in a poncho and a tight, combined with tampa low boots?? I have! (L.V.: and so what Ms Right?) Come on girl, give me a break! (L.V: how about I give you one?) Where did you think you are? At your Mexican house? Why didn’t you try out for something better? (L.V.: why didn’t you?) Seems like someone couldn’t wake up in the morning to pick the right clothes. (L.V: like you know what is “right”!) Oh dear Lord! (L.V.: Again!) Couldn’t made a step further and I stepped into a “nightmare”! (L.V.: are you sure about that?) “Would you really go for this combination of colors?” this would it be the very first question I wanted to make to that girl. Someone gave me the chance to see some dark color being combined with the warm color pink and some neutral white (L.V.: for everything there is a first time dear diva!). Could you imagine that?! Oh DEAR LORD!! (L.V.: here we go again with the Lord! Count how many times she has already said that and keep counting till she’s done!) Needed a warning sign here! During the Team Building time I was really, really trying to find something wrong and unsuitable on everyone’s clothes. Just for the record, dear Lord (L.V.: Hallelujah!), I couldn’t find a single thing so easily! Till I saw that haircut! (L.V.: so now she is talking hair cuts and hair styles... Awsome!) I though for a moment that she must be a mum of a delegate stuck in the 50’s. (L.V.: do you really know what are you talking about? Please tell me!). As soon as I realized she was a delegate I was so shocked! Oh DEAR LORD!!! (L.V.: and once again ‘LORD’!!!). This girl is in need of an immediate new hair cut or a new hair style! (L.V.: Go and do it yourself Ms. Sunshine!). But that girl had a great sense of fashion since her clothes were so awesome! One more thing that really drew my attention was a jacket in petrol color, which was so cool and fresh but I wouldn’t recommended for the team building day, since it was so tight that she couldn’t move very comfortable during the games! As well as the low-cut jeans! So many “accidents” with them, so don’t wear them at a Team building day! (L.V.: got to agree at the last one since I had one “accident” with that particular pair of jeans.). Never giving tips but always criticizing (L.V.: we got that!) I shall give you one more, never bite your nails cause its gross. Plus, last tip, never wear tights with flowers or in very vivid colors if it doesn’t suit you. Honestly, I have seen it on an official it very much suited, but couldn’t say the same for another one. (L.V.:Oh dear Lord can believe it she ended giving advices! That is something I want to see again!) All in all I have to confess it that all the delegates and all the officials didn’t had any actual problem with their clothes, only a few issues (L.V.: and you made such a big deal out of it!) that can be easily overcome. Looking forward for the committee work day and for the General Assembly. Till then, work it! by Meropi Setsika issue_2//page 4 When encountering a topic that has sparked so much diplomatic unrest, controversy is often almost inevitable. Wikileaks has published more than 250,000 online leaks so far, with continuously climbing numbers. How could a single committee of 13 individuals organize its thoughts on such a vast topic? Tess and George immediately set AFET on the right foot via brainstorming with…bird poo! Yes, you read the phrase correctly! The fact that every single delegate found at least 10 uses of bird poo reassured me- and may I say that it reassured the delegates themselves as well that discussing the question of whether this “unlimited” information sharing will urge nations to turn to 100% open diplomacy or hamper such efforts and bring clandestine affairs and secrecy to greater heights will appear as a simple task. The conversation commenced with great excitement from the delegates; I was glad to discover that within the multiple voices that were circulating the room hid much more of a unanimous goal and aspiration than a disagreement. I have to admit that AFET grasped the topic from every single aspect: whether it is in terms of national security, freedom of press and freedom of speech, the legal issues involved or the accuracy of the sources- as I later on learned it took the New York Times about two years to establish a reliable source so that it could publish an article on material posted on Wikileaks. As a concrete outline of the topic was created, what struck me in particular was the feeling of consensus: even though each delegate had individual points, they were so well discussed that when that yellow piece of paper went on the board, I felt as if it represented not a single ideology, but the entire room. Phrases that were mentioned (and cannot be forgotten) during the AFET teambuilding are: “We all have the right to inform others but to also be informed” and “Citizens need transparency, but the governments are happy if such is non-existent”. I am once again certain that the delegates will continue doing exactly what they have been doing so far: fighting. No, not with each other, but for what they believe in. GA might seem daunting, but with these 13 minds united, all having sacrificed self-gain in order to welcome this one mutual goal, AFET will present, successfully of course, the fruit of its labor. By Chrysa Cheronis Committee work; piece of cake for ENVI! CULTivating CULT After the tiring and fun day of team building, CULT was ready to get down with business. They wasted no time, quickly diving into the topic. They tested the temperature of the waters by underlining the words that they thought were important out of the prompt. Next was the post-it brain-storming. They touched upon mainly discrimination, globalization, education and minorities. They defined each and started to find means to reach their goals. The main think they had to focus on was where and how they were going to draw the thin line between countries’ cultural individuality and globalization. George said “We’re all different in a beautiful way.” Funny but true. Will CULT choose to emphasize differences that make us “beautiful” or try to bring citizens of member states to a common ground? Either way, the communication skills have been quite amazing throughout the day, showing lessons were learned from team building. As long as everyone respects and listens to each other as it is now, I can’t imagine an obstacle CULT won’t be able to tackle. As topics became more personal, like religion and the different education systems around Europe, CULT naturally tensed up a little. But it didn’t matter. Amazingly, they seemed to find their way around every problem. As it got closer to lunch time hunger decreased everyone’s ability to focus but the orgas came to the rescue. After lunch, no matter how sleepy CULT might have felt the discussion went on with all its might. They almost succeeded to count up to ten with their eyes closed but with the arrival of the chairs the game had to be dropped. I’m more than positive that the rest of the day will be at least as productive as it was until now. I LOVE YOU CULT, Mel. Such a tiring day this is! Committee work is a very serious thing because delegates are expected to express all of their concerns, ideas and proposals, which lead to the formulation of committee resolutions. Committee work for ENVI got started almost right away! Their chair, Pennie, advised the delegates to form a circle and start sharing their expectations and fears for the upcoming day. After that, she asked them to draw a picture reflecting their character but with relation to the committee’s topic. In a very quiet manner, they drew the pictures reflecting themselves in relation to the topic in an effort of instigating their brainstorming activity. Their chair split the time in half so they would be able to stop negotiating and start getting involved with the resolution formation. All ENVI’s delegates agreed on having a two and a half-hour discussion, two hours to form their resolution and thirty minutes to see everything they had done, so as for completing any possible last minute changes. As the work was in progress, they decided on their “golden rules”. No interruptions, when somebody speaks and respect towards all points made during CW. Since they had made their rules and set their time it was “post -it time” for them! Pennie distributed post-its and they started writ- ing down problems and means for solving the topic. Having everyone writing down all the problems and all the solutions they came up with, they started picking the notes they would use for forming the resolution. When lunch time came around, committee work discussion was still pretty much fired up. During lunch time they were more relaxed and a little tired. But they were still in the mood for more negotiation after it. When they were all done with their lunch they went back to the location of the CW. ENVI went on to the second round of discussion! After a short but meaningful conversion, they finally concluded with the grouping stage. With no more time to lose, and, being a few minutes behind the schedule, they started forming their resolution. They split into two groups; one team was responsible for phrasing the introductory clauses whereas the other was responsible for phrasing the operative clauses. They gathered all started making clauses for the resolution. PIECE OF CAKE! by Meropi Setsika issue_2// page 5 Born to be ECON For ECON, the committee work started right after the Committee’s Presentation when Alex gave them one post-it each, and, asked them to write on it the key-words he or she thinks in reference to the topic. Today after attending the Opening Ceremony they met in their committee’s room and after discussing they set their Golden Rules, rules they think that are prerequisites for a fruitful, civilized and proper discussion. It appears to be very important for them to listen to each other and to pay attention to what others say, to speak one at a time which they decided to make it happen by raising their hands before they speak in order to be given the floor by the coordinator of the debate. They also expressed their commitment to keep their team spirit by respecting each others opinions by not being absolute but open to new ideas and by always first listening to one’s point and then expressing their objections. Moreover they all agreed to have a coordinator at their discussion, who would be one of them sitting in the centre of their circle and apart from taking notes of the discussion he or she would give the floor to those who would raise their hands. After that Alex explained them the topic and gave them a few important pieces of information that are really helpful for understanding the problem. They continued by resuming the brainstorming session they had the day before, but they first chose the three most interesting post-its they had already written and then proceeded with the writing of new ones. Having finished brainstorming it was time for them to group the post-its, they chose to categorize them according to whether they refer to the current situation or the future situation. The brainstorming was followed by the discussion on each ¨current situation¨ post-it and with the notes kept by the coordinator the committee wrote down some bullet points. These bullet points in combination with the ¨future situation¨ post-its, by the same way, lead to the writing of new bullet points which were relevant to the future situation. All those bullet points were used for the phrasing of the resolution. Now you reader, yes you, shouldn’t you reconsider your willingness to compete with ECON during the General Assembly? By Dionysis Theodoropoulos and now....the chairs (continued) ... issue_2 // page 6 issue_2// page 7 issue_2 // page 8 issue_2// page 9 Europe’ s “real wealth” - Connected to diversity Looking back to European history, all we can do is to end up that nowadays Europe is much more than a conglomerate of treaties and legislative regulations. The European Union is a beautiful “idea” or “concept” above economic or other transnational agreements, because the truth is that Europe’ s wealth is its diversity and (then) its strength is its openness. Europe belongs to all of us, but there is a risk that it will end up belonging to no-one, if we are not connected to diversity. Europe could be characterised as a melting pot of cultures and nations. If we were trying to categorize them, we could find that in Europe’ s civilisation is connected to the ancient Roman laws or to the ancient Greek philosophy, to the several attempts for the establishment of Democracy (which, actually, are included as glorious, as well as, black pages in history books), to the ideas of Enlightenment, to the influences from the neighbouring eastern countries, to the scientific successes of the 19th, 20th and 21st century, etc. Living your European citizenship means actually that you are willing, if not ready, not only to accept this (colourful) fact, but to feel satisfied with it. What’s more, is not only the respect you have to show towards the “different”, but the real understanding of all these different voices that will bring you inner peace and provide you with insight. Taking into account that certain values, such as freedom, equality, human rights, as well as the need for better living conditions have no identity or citizenship, because they’ re just human needs, we can actually achieve the unanimity in most Europe’ s (as a whole) movements on political (or other) level. Being a European citizen is not something you have to live with because of your past or your origins, but something you have to enjoy because of your future. Being connected to diversity could never become a way of living through Institutions or punishments. Below you’ll find our answers to the YOUR questions. Q: Why is the ‘coffee’ break called a coffee break since there is no coffee? A: Well it wouldn’t be cool for it to be called ‘beverages break’! Q: Where is Martin/Tereza/Romanos from? A: Martin is British, Tereza is from Germany and Romanos is Greek (just has an accent). Q: I have read the paper and I see that we have editors, who are probably the only officials that I haven’t seen, why is that? A: Well they are working on the newspaper all the time, trying to make it as great as possibly! Q: Would Georgina date a delegate? A: It depends on the delegate. Q: Are Konstantinos and Valando dating? A: NOOOOOOO! Q: Could I come next year to the session? A: Of course or even you could try to be an official in a regional session. Just go on our website and you’ll find all the sessions that are going to take place both domestically and internationally. Q: Why do the head organizers look so worried and strict? AFET Monday, March 14, 10:00am. Walking inside the G.A. room and all you can see is faces: nervous faces, sleepy faces, determined faces. The Committee on Foreign Affairs, after spending a long, debilitating day forming its resolution, was more than well-equipped to represent freedom of speech and press and give real solutions to the Wikileaks situation. Although such a topic is particularly contentious, AFET aimed to predict the effects that the recent diplomatic leaks will have not only in the political agenda in Europe, but also worldwide. With AFET’s resolution being the first one to be discussed, the delegates had the opportunity to unwind from the tension of defending their topic and actively participate in the rest of the seven upcoming motions. Julia clearly read the operative clauses of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and therefore inaugurated the debate. Nickie’s dynamic defense speech substantiated AFET’s actions on creating a committee to censure the information posted on the internet by Wikileaks and other affiliated organizations by stressing that validity of information is of major importance and that complete transparency is not only impossible, but also undesired. The ones involved in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round of questions, a position which requires shrewd responses, were Manolis, Melina and Dionysis respectively; Manolis passionately stated that “the committee used to ensure that all information published will be valid and will not violate national security or human rights will be BY the people, FOR the people”, while Melina clarified that exposing names of individuals on Wikileaks is a violation of human rights and Dionysis inspired the whole committee with his words “democracy is never too much”. To end the debate, Joanna and Tatiana summed up together; persuasively depicting AFET’s main points and making the best possible impression at G.A; Joanna highlighted the necessity of education, as it is “vital to critical thinking”. Tatiana’s conclusion was powerful and well-built, as she drew attention to all the controversial elements of the topic and once more gave her heart to her task. After hearing the debate, a wave of pride overtook me; right in front of me stood 13 individuals who, two days ago expressed their anxiety for the days to come. I now see 13 remarkable individuals, who managed not only to be themselves during the course of the session, but to also unite, both in spirit and in beliefs, under the common roof of their resolution. Unfortunately AFET’s resolution did not pass with a difference of only three votes(!); but for me, and let me reassure you that the same applies to our chairs, all the delegates of AFET can believe in nothing but pure victory, as they successfully and wholeheartedly supported their resolution. For Transparency, for Open Diplomacy, for Honesty, for AFET. Congratulations. by Chrysa Cheronis EMPL Monday, it’s almost a big day for the most people, it’s the day they started going to school, it’s the day they went first time to the university it is the day they started to work, and for the rest of their life is the worst day of the week. Today also something new started, young people that had never been really worried for matters that occur them and matters that had to worried them, today they start discussing and understanding that although this union has made enormous steps there are many issues, old and new to solve. What matters is that Europe and communities in general have the need for ideas, new ideas from young people able to provide that material. One dam person walking is better than ten smart that remain sited. When EMPL’s time arrived all the audience was pretty active, I want to believe that this was not only my point of view. The defense speech came up, oh my god, I hope you people, yes you reader to you I am referring too, I hope you paid attention and Martin reporting for the last time on ITRE..!!.. understood that most of your points was already answered in this speech. Ha you call this an attack? It was like attacking Mubarak with painkillers. And here we are in the open debate, and this committee provides answers sow definite that I can’t even notice one single person to be unsatisfied with their answers. John explained almost the topic through a simple round of questions, amazing. Kostantinos balanced cost and goals, a very clear approach. It was amazing the way that EMPL was answering the rounds, with the cooperation that they learned both previous days, really happy for them and not even close to surprised. All questions that had been left, and to reach perfection in providing everyone with proper information, EMPL reached to summation speech, Eleftheria and Katerina gave us a perfect speech. I really wanted to take part in the voting procedure in order to vote in favor. GO EMPL!! By Romanos Mavridis I read OUR committee resolution last night, and to be honest the resolution is ‘tight’, as a fellow EYPer would say. It’s stable, and has the potential to survive throughout the General Assembly, meaning that it would pass the voting. They are a bit nervous but anyone would be. The General Assembly, for me and for others, is the battlefield that you have been preparing for 3 days, you have lost sleep on , you have debated about with your committee, and above all, have worked for . So you have to defend you have to make it happen. General Assembly is the most exciting part of the session. If you have prepared, you 're good. As a committee we have a strong defense with Fotini, as our defense speaker. Trying to prevent committees from attacking. But that didn’t stop LIBE II from stepping up, but I don’t believe people followed the speaker’s opinion. It’s not enough that we had one committee attacking, a second one did as well. EMPL with the same status, the speaker wasn’t heard. Then our defense in the Open Debate was strong as well, with strong points being made but still that didn’t make us ‘fall’ to our knees. George???? Didn’t manage to answer all the questions but still he did answer most of them! Then Thomas took the floor by answering the second round of questioning, and NAILED it! Third round was answered by Athinais that was a bit nervous but still did well. Fourth round was answered in our sum-up speech, by George and Konstantinos; the resolution had good basses that answered, on it’s own most of the points. Our committee mentioned that they want to help smaller countries in times of crises and have the chance in the energy market. In general the resolution was a success. It was accurate and was SUFFICIENT for the G.A, congratulations Konstantinos, Harry, Artemis, Nick, Dafne, George, Thoma, Athinais, Fotini, Maria, John, Konstantinos and of course Aspa, Great job!!! I forgot to mention that you PASSED…And that this is the last time that I’ll report in the paper for you… Thank you guys for the amazing experience..!!.. MARTIN OUT! issue_2 // page 14 After all, the end has no end… Having prepared their tactic, each committee entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the General Assembly was to be held. You could easily detect in their eyes the anxiety, but at the same time the enthusiasm for the outcome of this day. All members of LIBE II committee arrived ready to present and support their resolution. They were all very well prepared so that they would be capable of answering in any opposite opinion. The excitement was obvious as well as their impatience. In fact, while they were anxiously waiting for the GA to begin, they just couldn’t stop discussing about their topic and what the proper approach should be. Determination is the word that perfect- CULT’s ly describes that scene. Determination for presenting their resolution as better as they can. The moment that all members of LIBE II committee were waiting for since day one was finally here. The General Assembly was about to start. Smiles everywhere. Since their resolution was among the last ones to be discussed, LIBE II had the opportunity to actively participate in the debate expressing their own point of view as well as their concerns on the rest of the motions and comprehend the whole procedure. When their turn came, Georgina, stood at the pontium and started reading the operatives of the resolution without having any issues. Aliki was in charge of explaining any points of information, which she did successfully. Next, Natalie was the one who had the task of the defend speech and then at the open debate Stelios, Maria and Konstantinos answered every question made by their fellow delegates to the fullest. Finally, Ntemi answered the last questions and Christina closed with the sum up speech by urging passionately all the committees to vote in favor of their resolution. Taking into consideration all the above, I believe that everyone did the best they could. I hope each and everyone one of them learned these past three days the true meaning of the EYP experience, made new friendships or even discovered some things about himself. And remember: The end of this session does not mean the end of your journey. In fact, it’s just the beginning… by Maria Oikonomou GA: Th e Grea t Asse m From t he beg bly inning end of of com the Ge mittee neral A did wa work to sse sc the time. M ommunicate mbly the bes . For me it was an honor to be ENVI's journalist! Thank you guys for this unforgettable experience ! I shall never forget you!!! ENVI peo ple you are the BEST!!!! by Meropi Setsika Spyros saved the day Thanks to a delegate named Spyros and the ECON committee a great resolution was presented at the GA and passed. The reading of the operative clauses was assigned to Anestis, Dimitra did her best to defend the proposed resolution making in this way a few people to consider for the first time voting it. The attack speeches from the other committees were good, but not good enough to change the outcome of the voting procedure. Questions in open debate were not easy but George, Orfeas and Afroditi made it look like a trivial task and giving the right replies earned some more votes for their resolution. Last but surely not least, it will be a long time before we forget Vasilis answering to the last round of questions and barely leaving any time for Bill to sum up the discussion of their resolution.
