Some of the best new talent from Athens, Ga. is heading our way this weekend.
TD's will be hosting the local release party
for Gallery: Athens, Ga., a compilation disc
put out by Athens' Barfly records. Two
bands from the compilation, Shadowcaste
and Greenhouse, will be featured at the
show.
The disc, which is currently enjoying
airplay on more than 150 college radio
stations in 27 states, features 16 tracks
from six Athens bands: Shadowcaste, Greenhouse, Lime Credo, Dayroom, Grain and
Trinket.
It has big name production people as
well, including Michael Stipe and Mike
Mills, (of REM), Peter V (who has worked
with Andy Summers of the Police and
Herbie Hancock), Edd Miller (The Georgia
Satellites and 38 Special) and John Keane
(REM, Indigo Girls, Drivin' 'n' Cryin' and
Widespread Panic).
"The purpose of the record was to put
Athens back into the spotlight," says Gallery Project Manager David Mulkey. "There
are over 200 active bands in Athens and we
want to make people listen."
"The Athens music scene is as alive as
it ever was," Mills says. "Don't miss it."
Keane points out the variety of sounds
now heard in Athens. "There isn't really a
typical 'Athens' sound," he claims, "The
scene is too diverse. The Gallery disc

"You can't be hypnotized if you don't
want to be," said Hypnotist Jim Wand at
his performance last Tuesday night in
Tillman Auditorium, "and you must have
an IQ of at least 85, which means you can't
go to USC." The show was a near-sellout
presented by the Residence Hall Association. It was not only an informative performance, but extremely entertaining.
It all started with a group of about 20
students voluntarily coming on stage to be
hypnotized. The audience was also invited
to participate, but most chose not to for
fear of being embarrassed. (But as Wand
said, you cannot be hypnotized if you don't
want to be. In fact, you can't be made to do
anything you don't want to do such as
humiliating actions or revealing personal
information.)
So, there are 20 dazed people on stage,
what would you do? Make them sing, clap,
put them in a scene of their own? Wand
did all of this and more. He began with the
basics such as clapping hands and putting
their heads up and down.
One of the highlights of the evening
was when Mike Thow was chosen to be
Garth Brooks. He had the music, the
microphone and even a band to stand
behind him and play. But first, he had the
attitude. It was amazing the way that he
completely took on the personality of Garth
Brooks, by waving at the audience with an
ear to ear grin, speaking in a slightly
drawn out accent and playing up to what
the fans wanted out of him. Thow's perfor-
mance of "Friends in Low Places" was
pretty animated.
What really surprised the audience was
when Wand decided to let some of the
guys know what it was like to be pregnant.
Several of them were told that they were
six months pregnant, told to stand and sit,
and that they were feeling the effects of
being pregnant (among them morning
sickness and back pain). But Wand didn't
stop there, he went on and had them carry
the baby to term. Surprisingly though, he
didn't make them go through labor. Once
they all realized that they had a child of
their own in their arms, they were able to
name it, say how much it weighed and
breast-feed it. You may want to ask Mike
Kloss how his 7-pound 6-ou'nce baby
Allouicious is doing, or how Adam
McPherson's 7-pound 4-ounce baby Madina
is doing. They were pretty protective of
them, especially when Wand told them

C.U. After Six Country Dinner

The Choral Department and the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts will
sponsor three evenings of contemporary jazz, pop, and country music tonight,
tomorrow and Saturday, as the C.U. After Six Singers host a Country Dinner Show.
Proceeds from the event will go to support the group, according to C.U. After
Six spokesman Eric Stanton. The dinner, which will be held in the Lila Holmes
Ballroom of the Clemson House, will be an all-you-can-eat buffet, featuring barbecue
chicken, barbecue pork and three vegetables. General admission will be $10 and
student admission will be $8.
Good food is not the only reason to attend. "I reckon the reason people should
come," says Stanton, "is to support Performing Arts. And for their own personal
entertainment."

My favorite happens to be the
Laughing Dogs with their "I Need
a Million." Other names on the
album are: the Shirts, Tuff Dart,
Mink Deville, Sun. This pre-punk
album is really good for all of you
that seem to be trapped in the
punk era. I live day to day and
really let the past, be the past. I
jam to Zeppelin (actually, who
doesn't?), and some other old
bands, but these don't really interest me. I kind of feel bad for my
rating for this CD, for I know
some of you enjoy the screaming
punk sounds of the '70's.
daily between New York and Boston, to "Try," which urges people
to deal with obstacles in life to the
gentle "Insomniac," the album
keeps the listener enchanted. Billy
Pilgrim provides listeners with a
musical escape from the worries
of life.

"Oh no, it's the Dentists!
Please, don't make me go!" Calm
down all you fearful kids, it's only
a music group. The Dentists mix
vocals and music melodies of the
Bats and Midnight Oil. This is not
Midnight Oil, so don't expect them
to sound like them. The music is
in the opposite direction.
The Dentists produce good
poppy-alternative music for the
enjoyment of everybody. There is
no one out there that can resist
(unless you're dumb and deaf)
the musical force that pulls you
in. This British quartet's new album on EastWest Records "blends
a flair for instantly hummable
melody with a double shot of
cerebral post-punk attitude."
" Vocalist/guitarist Mick
Murphy states "... our lyrics
don't always match the music, so
you have a really aggressive
sounding song with perfectly content lyrics or a very happy song
where something macabre is going on."
The other members of the band
consists of: Bob Collins (guitars
and backing vocals), Rob L. Grigg
(drums and gladioli) and Mark
Matthews (bass guitar and backing vocals). The Dentists started
some commotion in America
about two years ago when a couple
of their compilations came out.
The first, Naked, is a collection of
demo's and outtakes, while the
second, Dressed, is a collection of
their most popular early releases.
Behind the Door I Keep the
Universe "thrusts and parries with
a clarity belying the whirlwind
recording process that saw the
band a grand total of 11 days."
But they must of worked hard
during those 11 days because the
album sounds great. My favorite
groovy tune on the album would
have to be "Space Man." This is
where, if you have heard the Bats,
you can hear the resemblance.
"This Is Not My Flag" is "a wiry
guitar rouser that vents the pentup aggression of the working
man." All of the other 10 songs
have the same musical background as these, do which produces one great album.
So if a Bats -sounding group is
what you desperately need for
your musical collection, then pick
up the Dentists-Zte/i/nc/ the Door
I Keep the Universe. "Open your
mental door just a crack, and
you'll discover the Dentists' universe."

Yeah, that sounds about right.
Hallucination Engine is great
music for just about anyone, as
long as you're not offended by
William S. Burroughs ("Words of
Advice"). The music on this album is not the kind of music that
I normally listen to, but I'll certainly keep it for my collection.
The beat comes through strong
and clear, leaving just enough
room for the obvious creative
talents of many great musicians
such as Wayne Shorter, Sly
Dunbar, Nicky Skopelitis, and
Shankar, to name a few. The
variety and quality of musical
talents provide a psychedelic complexity that is incredibly easy to
listen to and leaves nothing to
complain about. So, run out and
buy the CD so you can enjoy it for
yourself, and, if you're friends
with Mary Jane, bring her along,
you won't regret it.

Run! Run! CBGB's has re-released a live compilation of the
70's. Get your copy before they
are all gone! Actually, even if you
were a no-legged turtle, you would
still be able to get a copy of this
mediocre CD. It's really great that
CBGB's has survived for 20 years.
They should celebrate, but not
with releasing an album that is
not hip to todays musical culture.
Today's youth decides what is
going to be hot or not I feel that
the children are going to disregard this one for the not list.
This album combines musical

Clemson Feb. 10, with a show at
the Gathering. The Atlanta area's
rapidly rising mountain rockers
played songs from their newest
release, Wade.
The album is very reminiscent of the Allman Brothers,
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton
and the Eagles. A true synthesis
of funk, bluegrass, blues and
Southern rock, the album is expected to easily exceed sales of
their last title, Cemeteries and
Junkyards.
If you've been longing for the
return of Southern rock, then
Jupiter Coyote and this album
are for you.

Yo this is a slamming group.
This album is fat! These guys
really know how to flow. These
guys remind me of Leaders of
the New School.Tribe called
Quest and De La Soul all balled
into one conglomeration of lyrical intensity and slick beats. If
you like those other artists you
will definitely not be disappointed with YAGGFU FRONT.
The fattest tracks are
"Trooper 101," "Black Liquid,"
"Busted Loop" and "Slappin'

Do you feel real? If so, I d like to know
I went to see Kevn Kinney at
the Coffeehouse last week. It was
the second time I had seen him
play in the last year.
Last time I had the opportunity to interview him, but had
forgotten to ask him for his autograph. This may not seem to be a
big deal, but I really wanted to get
it. So I made the autograph the
main reason for going to the Coffeehouse show.
All of this got me thinking
about how much time we spend
idol-worshipping our celebrities
in America. We blow them up in
our minds and make them seem
larger than life. Often this sets us
up for disappointment when we
meet our idols and learn that
they, too, are human beings. They
come with hangnails, crooked
teeth, not-so-perfect hairdos, dirty
shoes, five o'clock shadow and
other faults and idiosyncrasies.
They are not the airbrushed 8 x
10 glossies we wish them to be, so
we become crestfallen when they
don't live up to our lofty expectations.
When I first saw Kevn Kinney,
I was somewhat surprised. It

wasn't because I was disappointed. He was, in fact, everything I ever thought he would be.
He was real.
As a longtime fan of Drivin' 'n'
Cryin', I came to realize that behind all the gloss and packaging,
there was something very real
about the members of the band,
especially Kinney. His songs had
both power and polish to them,
with underlying social messages,
among
them
poverty,
homelessness, discontent, the
search for the soul, hope for peace
and the nature of human relationships. His words conveyed cynicism, angst, bitterness, hope, concern and friendliness all at once.
When I first walked up to him
last semester after he played an
in-store set at Manifest Discs and
Tapes, I fumbled my words when
asking him for a short interview.
He smiled and said, "Sure." I was
shocked and comforted at the
same time. He really was as nice
as I had hoped. As I interviewed
him, he made me feel even more
comfortable, as if I had known
him for years. I have never been
one to try and meet my idols
because I fear being disappointed
by their humanity. Kinney was a
pleasant surprise.
After the Coffeehouse show, I
waited in line to get his autograph. He smiled and asked questions of each person in the line,
including the guy in front of me,
who had sketched Kinney as he
played. He was really impressed
by the guy's napkin drawing and
showed it to his girlfriend.
When I got to the front, he
recognized me from out interview last semester. "Hey, you're
the guy that bought me the beer
that other time," he said, smiling.
I pulled out the black and white
press photo that came to the
Tiger with the review copy of his
album and asked him to sign it.
He smiled again, and took the
picture from me. "Sure. How
about here?" he asked, pointing
to the guitar in the picture. I said
that would be a good place and he
signed it with a peace symbol,
followed by an exclamation point
and his name "Kevn." It was, to
me, an impressive confirmation
of his friendly nature, his humanity, his reality.
It reminded me of a children's
book I once read, The Velveteen
Rabbit by Margery Williams.
There is one passage in that book
which especially comes to mind.
"Real isn't how you are made,
said the Skin Horse, "It's a thing
that happens to you. When a
child loves you for a really long
time, not just to play with, but
REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin
Horse, for he was always truthful.
"When you are Real you don't
mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once,
like being wound up," he asked,
"or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once,"
said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's
why it doesn't often happen to
people who break easily, or have
sharp edges, or who have to be
carefully kept. Generally, by the
time you are Real, most of your
hair has been loved off, and your
eyes drop out and you get really
loose in the joints and very shabby.
But these things don't matter at
all, because once you are Real
you can't be ugly, except to people
who don't understand. . . but
once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for
always."
Haze and Shuffle a pleasant surprise

bandwagon rides of groups like Pearl Jam
and Smashing Pumpkins and still get good
alternative music by listening to the new
bands emerging onto the music scene.

to be big while maintaining the creativity and talent necessary to make it last.
The five members are Martin Peron
on guitar, Fred Neron on guitar,
Sebastien Laffite on the bass, Stephan
Dumont on drums and Daniel Jacques
with the lead vocals. They began by
practicing together as teenagers-just
for themselves- but eventually started
playing around town in different clubs
and drawing a large following. After
being discovered and signed by the
Canadian label Artiste, Haze and Shuffle
was soon signed to the American Arista
label.
Some of the best songs on the al-
bum include, "That's the Way It Is,"
"My Special One," "She Got Me," "Take
Me Over" and "Haunted Child." All of
the songs give the listener a sense of
honest, real music without the studio
effects or sound mixes that some bands
need. The music drifts between seductive, Verve-like jams and loud, heavy
music that lays assault to the speakers
and passive urges.
This album is definitely worth owning and you will come to appreciate the
power behind the lyrics as well as the
intelligence. The band's wide-range of
influences gives the entire album a
strong place in the music world.

I guess for a movie starring
such big-time stars as Emma Thompson and Daniel Day-Lewis,
they (the soundtrack guys) had to
get some big names as well. They
managed to rope in Bono to write
three new songs, two of which
heperformed by himself with
Gavin Friday and the third performed by Sinead O'Connor. The
soundtrack also features songs
by Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and
The Kinks, along with three original scores by Trevor Jones.

The songs written by Bono are
the only new tunes, excluding the
original scores. The rest of album
seems to be a history of rock;
from Bob Marley's "Is this Love,"
to Jimi Hendrix's,"Voodoo Child,"
to The Kinks, "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," even to the
laughable Thin Lizzy track,
Hopefully the movie will be a
little better than the soundtrack.
I do suggest, unless you are a
huge U2 fan and need to own
everything to which Bono has
ever donated his voice, to leave
this one in the store and listen to
it when you see the movie.

Beautiful, fine and able to rap,
these ladies are unreal in their
fourth album Very Necessary.The
album is composed of real life
experiences ofmodernday women
and how they are misunderstood.
These ladies express their experiences with a hip-hop and reggae
beats.
The songs "None Of Your
Business,"
"Step"
and
"Somebody's Getting On My
Nerves" all tell exactly what the
title says.
My two favorites are the dance
hall-flavored tunes of "Sexy
Noises" and "Groove Me." In
"Sexy Noises," the ladies are telling the males that they should
not be afraid to let the female
know that it feels good during
sex.
Salt 'N' Pepa are trying to say
it's alright for the male to make
sounds and indications if the experience is pleasurable for them
as well. "Whatta A Man" also
goes off, with the luscious background vocals of En Vogue.
In the first release "Shoop,"
Salt 'N' Pepa reply that "just
because a woman gives out her
phone number it doesn't make
her a ho." This song is very suggestive, as is the trend with most
modern music.
But the creators of the song
say that it is alright to be sugges-
tive and aggressive and that there
is nothing wrong with this type
of behavior.
"Shoop" is a sexy, flirtatious
track that would be commonly
heard at a party.
Salt 'N' Pepa comes across as
a male-bashing group. As I listened more to the group, I noticed that they are merely expressing the female point of view.
This veteran group again distinguishes themselves from other
female groups on Very Necessary by taking on controversial
issues such as safe sex and AIDS.
In one track the group remarks, "You Must Wear A
Condom" in hopes of promoting
safe sex.
The last and most powerful
track, "I've Got AIDS," allows
Salt 'N' Pepa to do a skit on the
subject of AIDS.
It is done by WEATOC (a teen
outreach/activist group from
Boston) and is about a girl who
discovers she has AIDS.

make his imagination run alive
on the silver screen. Interweaving fantastical storylines with a
flair for the visually dramatic, his
movies continue to thrill, scare
and move new generations of
viewers with his unique style of
cinematic storytelling.
Few directors can say their
catalog of movies have produced
as many memorable cinematic
moments as Spielberg's films:
• A young boy befriending
an alien lifeform in E. T.
• A struggling swimmer
helplessly succumbing to the
throes of a man-eating shark

• A courageous archaeologist
battling his way through the
sandstorms of mystery,
political intrigue, and the
supernatural in his quest to
find the Ark of Covenant in
Raiders of the Lost Ark.
• A biological haven for
manmade dinosaurs goes
haywire, trapping the human
inhabitants along with their
prehistoric pals in Jurassic
ParkCompared to such thrilling
blockbuster hits of the past and
present, his newest film,
Schindler's List, is by far
Spielberg's greatest and most
personal achievement. Based on
the Thomas Keneally novel, the
movie stars Liam Neeson as Oscar Schindler, a slick businessman who hustles his way into
starting up a pots-and-pans factory in Krakow using cheap Jewish labor during the Nazi's initial
occupation of Poland.
As the war progresses, the fate
of his workers hangs in the balance. His increasing sympathy
for the plight of his Jewish workers motivates Schindler to help
them by any means he deems
necessary. Using up all of his
fortunes and risking his own life
in the process, he ultimately helps
1,100 Jews from being crushed
under the unrelenting grasp of
the Nazi party.
Directed in a black and white
documentary format, Schindler's
List seems almost as real as the
newsreel footage seen from time
to time on TV documentaries.
The explicit violence is horrifying
and visceral and clearly is meant
to evoke the unmerciful attitude
and evil nature of the Nazi regime.
We watch as the Nazis raid
and kill Jews in their own homes,
the light from their own gunfire
lighting up the windows like a
deadly game of pinball. Ralph
Fiennes portrays the pinnacle of
this undercurrent of sinister actions as Amon Goeth, a Nazi officer without an emotional or car-
ing bone in his body. He brings

Spielberg's use of scenes involving children on both sides of the
conflict are some of the most

movie. One of the more powerful,
images involves a scene where
Jewish children are forced to hide
in human waste of the camp's
mass toilet sewer system. It is a
scene that is both gruesome and
heart-wrenching.
Spielberg uses Schindler's List
as a reminder that even in the
most extreme of circumstances,
one person can make a difference. Although the subject is very
serious, Spielberg's ability to balance the heartache with humor is
a testament to his own craftsmanship. Hopefully, on March 2 la
