S E VA DEVOTIONAL EDUCARE Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough,Canada ZONE 11, REGION 13 An offering.... On the auspicious occasion of the 87th year of God’s advent on earth in the form of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of our Centre’s existence, we, the devotees, of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, offer our love and gratitude at the lotus feet of Bhagavan. This compilation of our history is an attempt to express the overwhelming love and thankfulness we owe our Lord Sai for including us in His divine Mission in some form or other. We are truly blessed to have lived in the awareness of God’s physical presence on earth and to be given a chance to transform our lives along the path of Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-violence. We dedicate this book as a token of our deepest appreciation to the source and inspiration of the Sai movement, the love of our lives, the guiding light behind our personal transformation and spiritual growth, and the architect of our destinies, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. On the occasion of His 87th birthday celebrations, we rededicate ourselves to His message of universal love, unity, purity and divinity and hope to rise to Bhagavan’s expectations by living in the light of His teachings. Precious Lord, may we always bask in Thy protection till we reach Thee, our final destination. Jai Sai Ram Page 2 | An Offering Page 3 | An Offering PREFACE With the influx of many Sri Lankans moving into the Scarborough region of Canada, a few of these newcomers, who had already been exposed to Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings and who had been involved in Swami’s Mission, felt the need to meet as a group to conduct weekly Bhajans. What first began as a small group that met at a fellow devotee’s apartment to conduct Bhajans and introduce their children to the Sathya Sai Education philosophy, soon turned into what has now become the largest Sathya Sai Centre in the world outside of India. The Scarborough Sai Centre has developed and expanded greatly since its inception. Many, many devotees from all over the GTA devoted not merely hours or days, but years of their time and energy towards the transformation and development of this Centre. The Centre expanded not only in size and number, but also in its services and outreach programs. It has gone from being a small devotional group to a full blown congregation that gladly serves the community. And all of this was possible solely through the grace and blessings of our Dearest Sai. The Centre has achieved many milestones in its time, from it first being recognized as a religious organization in 1989, to its evolution into a charitable organization in 1999, to having its building plan blessed by Swami Himself in 2002, to finally moving into its own home and having Swami bless the first invitation to the Centre’s inauguration ceremony before his physical passing in 2011 - the most gratifying of all achievements. Each decade brought new vigor and excitement and, with Swami’s love and blessings, the Centre now celebrates its 25th anniversary by looking back on how everything began and its path to where it is now. Here unfolds our journey. Page 4 | Preface Page 5 | Preface HIGHLIGHTS:1987-1997 I HAVE COME TO LIGHT THE LAMP OF LOVE IN YOUR HEARTS, TO SEE THAT IT SHINES DAY BY DAY WITH ADDED LUSTER EDUCARE EXCO/CENTER During these years, members of the Centre had the fortune of being visited and addressed by various important individuals. On one such occasion, Mrs. M. Jozsa blessed the Scarborough Sai Centre with the Linga Pooja using the Linga that was blessed by Bhagavan Baba. Additionally, Mr. Ragavan Srinivasan, the former Editor of Tamil Sanathana Sarathi, addressed Centre devotees on two occasions. Furthermore, the Scarborough Sai Centre members organized a musical performance by P. Susheela and her artists at Centennial College Gym, which was well attended. The Centre also had the rare opportunity of having Michael McCarty, a storyteller from USA, grace the Centre with some entertainment for the SSE (Balvikas) children using his unique story telling abilities. Also during these years, the idea of looking for a permanent place for our Sai Centre, which originated years back, was revisited. In 1996, one of our Sai Centre members, who had been very keen on this project for many years, was given the task of looking for suitable locations. This search finally materialized in finding the present location. The Centre also made its efforts to unite and develop the bond between members of the congregation through its first Sai Centre Annual Picnic which was organized by Centre members and held in 1997. Furthermore, Scarborough Sai Centre’s contribution towards Swami’s Mission was wonderfully recognized in the final years of this term. In March 1997, Dr. V.P. Singh, the Central Coordinator of the Sathya Sai Organization of Canada, appointed one of our Sai Centre members to be the National Advisor - Education and another member to be the first Regional Coordinator for Metropolitan Toronto. Page 6 | Highlights: 1987-1997 HAVING AN INDEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR NEEDS AND GOALS IS A FUNDAMENTAL PROCESS TO THE WAY WE WORK WITH YOU. Initially, SSE classes were conducted in one of the apartments of a Guru. However, as the number of students increased, classrooms were rented from Woburn Collegiate to accommodate the increasing number of students. Accordingly, more Gurus were also recruited. Classes were conducted on Sunday mornings and Bhajans were held on alternative Sundays in the evenings with SSE children and their parents attending the Bhajans. 1990 The number of children seeking admission continued to increase year by year and in 1990, the first Annual SSE Retreat was held at Pearce William Christian School in London, Ontario, for which the Scarborough Centre SSE children attended. Every year thereafter, SSE children, Gurus and devotees from our Sai Centre participated in the Retreat. 1992 In 1992, our Centre Gurus and some devotees participated in the Eastern Canada Workshop, which was organized by the National Education Coordinator. Every year, the Centre also organized speech, essay, and art competitions for the SSE children as part of the Easwaramma Day celebrations. To the Centre’s delight, SSE students were able to achieve high standards in these competitions. 1994 In June 1994, the Scarborough Sai Centre organized a SSE Gurus Seminar titled ”Blossoming of a Guru” at Woburn C.I. Gurus from various Sai Centres in Eastern Canada attended the one-day workshop. Page 7 | Highlights: 1987-1997 HIGHLIGHTS:1987-1997 SEVA In 1989, our Sai Centre Sevadals and Mahilas were first introduced to serving lunch for the needy in one of the downtown shelters. Our Centre was allocated every fifth Saturday to engage in this Seva and our members were given a minimum of four Saturdays a year to take part. Members brought the prepared lunch to one of the members’ home and the food was then taken downtown to the shelter home to be served for about 100 – 120 needy persons by our Centre members. This Seva activity continues even today. Also, as part of the caring and sharing program, which begun in 1990, SSE children visited and entertained the residents of Seven Oaks and Scarborough Grace Hospital with songs and instruments, such as the piano and violin. In 1992, the Centre explored further opportunities to serve the needy. After a few meetings with the Program Coordinator of Touchstone Youth Shelter, we received the opportunity to prepare brunch for twenty to twenty-five Youths. The brunch was prepared at the location and Centre members volunteered to render this service every Saturday. This is another Seva activity that continues today. EDUCARE (continued) 1995 The Centre also celebrated the first SSE Night in 1995, which included Bhajans, plays, speeches, and dances. 1996 In 1996, as part of Swami’s 70th birthday celebrations, as well as to recognize the sixth World Conference recommendation for “Ways in Which We Can Stop Destroying the Earth and Everything Precious On It”, an essay competition was held on the topic by the Sri Sathya Sai Organization in Canada for SSE children. In this competition our Sai Centre SSE children received many awards. 1997 In 1997, our Centre members participated at the Eastern Canada SSE Retreat, which was a seminar for parents, held on August 9 at Scott Religious Hall in North York. Also in 1997, our SSE Gurus attended the Guru Refresher Course at Woburn Collegiate, which was organized by the Centres in Ontario Regions 1 and 2. In 1995, Centre members were looking for additional Seva opportunities. They met the Management of Kennedy Lodge, where seniors were recovering, some of whom were bed ridden and many others who had mobility only with the aid of wheelchairs. They offered their services to clean the wheelchairs once a year. Volunteers from other Sai Centres joined them in this activity and this service continued for many years. In 1997, our Centre members joined other Sai Centre members in the Greater Toronto Area for tree planting, an activity that is still in effect. Centre members also involved themselves in other activities such as stitching shirts and pillowcases for young children that were staying at the Puttaparthi Hospital. During this period, the Centre also initiated the Home Support Project for seniors, which involved cleaning their apartments and driving them for doctors’ appointments. Some adults and Youth volunteered to visit nursing homes and hospitals to speak to patients who never had any visitors. During winter months, the Youth also distributed warm clothing items to the forgotten and lonely in the downtown streets. Christmas time was yet another opportunity for Centre members to embrace Seva. SSE children along with Youth and adults visited Scarborough Grace Hospital and Seven Oaks, a seniors’ home, and entertained the seniors with dances, songs, piano playing and singing of Christmas carols. During Bhajan days, Sevadals and Mahilas engaged in set up and clean up of the Bhajan hall as well as the altar and sound system. This involved taking home the altar items, mats, and sound system equipment and bringing them back for the next Bhajans as well as ensuring cleanliness of the Bhajan hall and the area where footwear was kept. On special Bhajan days, and when workshops were held, the Sevadals and Mahilas methodically organized the meals, crowd control, and cleanliness of the washrooms. Page 8 | Highlights: 1987-1997 Page 9 | Highlights: 1987-1997 HIGHLIGHTS:1987-1997 YOUTH “Young Adult programs are being established to encourage young adults to lead purposeful lives by learning and practicing spiritual values as defined and established by the life, message, and works of Sathya Sai Baba. ” The Youth members were involved in all Sai Centre and Regional activities such as Seva, Sai spiritual studies, music, drama, sports, and Bhajan singing. Participating in Sai Centre activities and Regional activities provided our Centre Youth with training in leadership and character development. Furthermore, it helped build their self-confidence and taught them to work in unity with other Youth members from other Centres. They also took part in several very important events. In 1992, the Youth participated in the Eastern Canada Retreat and presented a play on Shirdi Baba. Also, a Sports Day was held in April 1996, where the Youth Boys participated in badminton, volleyball, and basketball. Furthermore, in July 1996, the Youth organized a Cultural Evening at Agincourt Collegiate. This was a three-hour program consisting of a play, dance pieces, and songs. This event was a great success. There was an awareness competition organized and held by Regions 1 and 2 in 1996. Many participants from Scarborough Centre received awards for their work. The final award ceremony was held at Centennial College’s Ashtonbee Campus. A Youth Boy from Scarborough also got the opportunity to speak at the function. On May 17, 1997, a Youth Symposium on the “Practice of Dharma” was organized by the Youth of Regions 1 and 2 and was held at the University of Toronto. The Youth of Scarborough Centre participated and played a very active role. Scarborough Centre, together with Youths from Brampton Centre, presented a drama titled “Youth as a Servant: The Beginning of a Good Leader”. The Scarborough Youth Coordinator was also on the Panel for Group Discussion/Question and Answers. The first World Youth Conference (WYC) was held from July 16 - 19, 1997. Twelve Youths (seven Girls and five Boys) attended from the Scarborough Sai Centre. The conference started with a Youth March Past and a Youth from Scarborough Centre was given the opportunity to carry the Canadian Flag. Two Youth Girls from Scarborough also had the opportunity of being in the WYC Task Force for crowd control. One Youth Girl and one Youth Boy from the Centre were also part of the human values song festival presented in the Divine Presence. The Youth Boys were part of a street patrol where they delivered sandwiches, late in the evenings, to the homeless who slept in unapproachable locations. Even more so, from 1996 - 1997, the Youth Girls prepared sandwiches for a downtown shelter on a monthly basis. The Youth Boys and Girls also joined the SSE children during Christmas to sing carols at hospitals and seniors homes. Due to the dedicated efforts of the Executive Committee, the Wing Coordinators, Active Members, parents, and well wishers, all four wings - Spiritual, Educare, Seva, and Youth have been growing year by year and have provided adequate opportunities for individual transformation and have also proven to be a source of inspiration to newcomers. Leadership talents have also been developed to vigorously carry forward Swami’s Mission. By the end of 1997, devotees attending Bhajans amounted to about 450, SSE children increased from a handful in 1987 to about 350, and the number of Youth members increased from two to forty, with the Youth Group consisting of twenty Boys and twenty Girls. These forty Youth members have now pursued different careers and are leaving an impact in their workplaces. Some still continue to be involved not only in Centre activities but also at the Regional and National levels and, as a result, are having an impact on both the society and the Sai Organization. We offer our gratitude to Bhagavan Baba for the varied opportunities He offered us to serve Him during the initial set up and build up in the first ten years of the Sathya Sai Centre of Scarborough. The Centre is also proud to say that three Youth members received awards for community work from the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture. Page 10 | Highlights: 1987-1997 Page 11 | Highlights: 1987-1997 HIGHLIGHTS:1987-1997 DEVOTIONAL When the Centre first moved to Woburn Collegiate, Bhajans were held weekly on Sunday evenings. However, this schedule was changed, and Bhajans were eventually moved to alternative Sunday evenings. Study Circle discussion was also initiated in order to convey Swami’s teachings to newcomers. To reinforce Swami’s messages to Centre devotees, the Centre set up a lending library of Sai Literature and audio cassettes of Bhajans. HIGHLIGHTS:1998-1999 1998-1999 became the period in which the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organization of Scarborough began to form a new image for itself. It was no longer merely identified as a religious organization but as a charitable organization as well, a result of its members’ efforts to reach out to the non-Sai community, all of which was blessed by Swami. For Akhanda Bhajans, Centre members had originally joined York Sai Centre to sing and chant our Lord’s name during this time. However, as membership increased, Scarborough Sai Centre began organizing its own twelve-hour Bhajans at Woburn Collegiate and, on later occasions, invited York Centre members as well. Other devotional groups and Sai Centres in the Greater Toronto Area were also invited and Bhajans began to run for longer hours. In 1990, our Sai Centre SSE children and Bhajan singers participated in Akhanda Bhajans, which were organized by all the Sai Centres in Ontario and held at Scott Religious Hall in North York. In 1997, both Regions in Toronto came together to organize a twenty-four hour Akhanda Bhajan at Centennial College. To promote community Bhajans, singers from Scarborough Sai Centre were invited to sing Bhajans at various temples in the Greater Toronto Area on festival days. Furthermore, on June 6, 1992, members of the Centre participated in the Shirdi Sai Baba murthi installation at the Vishnu Centre Building in Richmond Hill. Along with these efforts, a Bhajan Workshop was organized at Woburn Collegiate on June 23rd, 1996, to improve the quality of Bhajan singing, and was embraced by participants from all Sai Centres and devotional groups in Ontario. Excerpt from Tamil Newspaper about the Centre Page 12 | Highlights: 1987-1997 EXCO/CENTER In 1998, the Centre saw its first quarterly newsletter, published as “Sai World”. It consisted of articles on Swami’s teachings, events that occurred at Scarborough Sai Centre, and, most of all, the creative work of the Centre’s SSE students and Youth. During this term, various steps were also taken to make assistance for devotee queries more accessible. In light of this need, two new services were set up to help both existing Centre members and new devotees. A phone line was set up to provide information on upcoming Centre events and emergency notifications. Additionally, a newcomers’ Information desk was put up to provide assistance to devotees who were new to the organization by welcoming them and providing them with information on Centre activities and Swami’s literature and teachings. Probably the most significant step that the Centre took towards revamping its image was establishing its First Constitution, which was published for the purpose of allowing the Centre to be registered as a charitable organization. This Constitution was offered to Swami for His Divine Blessings at Prasanthi Nilayam, Puttaparthi on February 1999 by a member of our Centre. Page 13 | Highlights:1998-1999 HIGHLIGHTS:1998-1999 S E VA EDUCARE The Home Project, approved by the Housing Authorities, was a Seva project that the Centre actively pursued during these years. The homes of residents with mental and physical challenges were cleaned by dedicated Sai volunteers under the leadership of late Mr. Ratnam, Seva Coordinator and President. These homes were in need for cleaning and our volunteers made a significant difference in the lives of these residents. Centre members also continued to assist with wheelchair cleaning at the Kennedy Lodge Long Term Care facility in their initiative to serve senior members of the society. In 1998, the SSE children had their first “Looney Drive”. The money raised from this project was donated towards several causes. One such cause was Swami’s water project. Another was towards buying gifts for children in foster homes. The older SSE students, accompanied by Gurus, visited these foster homes and spent time with the children and their foster parents, bringing much joy and happiness to all. Even more gifts were bought and donated to the Children’s Aid foundation during Christmas. Seniors were also given opportunities to take part in the community and be actively involved. One such opportunity included a day of special events that was held for seniors by seniors which was enriched with activities such as study circles, value based dramas, villu paatu, and games. The Spiritual Wing also organized a day of entertainment for seniors living in Seven Oak’s Providence Centre, a long-term care facility, with carols, dance, and music performances. Moving further with its attempt to reach out to the community, the Centre, for the first time, provided free classes in Math and English for students, including non-Sai devotees who needed extra help, at Woburn Collegiate in an effort to introduce EHV (Education in Human Values) in the community. Although there was much focus put on the seniors, children were not forgotten in the process. For this young group, a tutorial project was implemented in which tuition classes were initiated for children who needed assistance in math. These tuition classes were supplemented with a lesson on values prior to the start of each math lesson. This project lasted for approximately one year and served about fifty children. DEVOTION Even greater strides were taken to reach out to the community through a Human Value Song Festival that was held in July 1998. This event was held at the Scarborough Civic Centre and was sponsored by the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough. Throughout this festival, renditions of value based songs were performed by various multi-faith and cultural groups in Scarborough and these efforts were acknowledged by the Prime Minister of Canada at the time, Jean Chrétien. Sai Centres in 1998. Additionally, various workshops were held at the Centre and have continued over the years. These include sessions on Bhajan singing, like “Song of the Soul”, and conducting study circles. Others include workshops that guide you in spirituality and the pathway to God as well as ones geared towards Youths such as the one that was held by Rita Bruce. Centre members did not stop there in their goal to serve the sick and needy. In 1998, the first blood donor clinic, “Liquid Love”, was held at Pearson Collegiate and sponsored by the Scarborough Sai Centre jointly with other regional Sai Centres. Also, the Mahila members of the Centre stitched pillowcases and baby shirts and donated them to Swami’s old hospital in Prasanthi Nilayam. YOUTH It was a new beginning for the Youth Girls when they began cooking meals and supplying them to a Women’s Shelter Home downtown one Sunday every month. The residents of this shelter home very much looked forward to the food and referred to it as “Sai Baba food”. The Youth also engaged in “Project Warmth”, which was a Seva initiative in which they collected blankets and warm clothes to give to the needy. During this period, Scarborough Sai Centre was also represented at the conferences held at Prasanthi Nilayam in the Divine Presence of Swami. Among these was the First Convention of Overseas Chair Persons of Sri Sathya Last but not least, the Youth Boys dedicated their time once a week to play games with the mentally and physically disabled children in Scarborough. Page 14 | Highlights:1998-1999 Page 15 | Highlights:1998-1999 HIGHLIGHTS: 2000 Guru Naanak said that without faith in God, man is blind; without it, you are moving corpses. Your life might be as grand, as beautiful, as rich as the Taj Mahal -- but remember the Taj is but a tomb! Whatever the method of worship, whichever the Name or Form, it is Faith that matters; it is that which gives life and energy for higher things. ~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba HELP WHERE EVER EXCO/CENTER The year 2000 brought about many hopes and visions for the future, many of which have now been realized and brought into play. This year, dreams of buying land and building a Centre Building as a brand new, permanent home for our Beloved Lord were revitalized. As a result, a system was initiated and put into place for the purpose of seeking support for the project. In the spirit of creating new homes, the Centre also contributed towards the renovation of the building for the new Sathya Sai School in Scarborough. EDUCARE An Educare Workshop was held during this year for all SSE Gurus and Assistant Gurus, which was guided by Brother/Uncle T.R. Pillai who had served as the National Educare Coordinator. Page 16 | Highlights: 2000 DEVOTION YOUTH Having noticed an opportunity to help increase participation in spiritually driven activities, SSE classes were moved from their morning slots to an afternoon session. This move was made with the intention of increasing the number of devotees who attended Bhajans, with the change in times putting SSE classes right before evening Bhajans. This change took great strides towards engaging more parents and SSE students in Bhajans and results showed that this change was successful. The Youth took on a large initiative during this year as they got involved in the construction of the temporary building of the Sathya Sai School, the first of its kind in Canada that sought to incorporate character building along with education, inspired by Swami’s teachings. THERE IS A NEED S E VA This year saw a new but strong inclination towards engaging in Seva that incorporated all age groups. Consequently, this vision brought about the initiation of a ride assistance program in which members of the congregation committed themselves to provide rides for seniors to and from various places, such as medical appointments. Following suit with this initiative to assist needy seniors, the Home Support Service project was also built upon and improved. In this program, members of the Centre visited various senior, elderly, and delicate members of the community at their homes and gave them a helping hand, including activities such as cleaning their apartments, taking them shopping, and taking them to their doctors when necessary. Call us today to Volunteer 416-335-7242 Page 17 | Highlights: 2000 HIGHLIGHTS: 2001-2002 EXCO/CENTRE The years 2001 to 2002 are important years in our Centre’s history. It was a time marked with changes that reflected our spiritual growth and the increase in the number of devotees partaking in Centre activities. The momentum that had been gathering in previous years was at a threshold and many of us played an important role in making the transition. In February 2002, the members of our congregation agreed to purchase three acres of land upon which to build a Centre Building. By June of that year, we had finalized the transaction and bought the land for the Centre. Within a matter of four months, we were able to raise $600,000. Support for what we all felt was Swami’s project steadily increased from the members of our congregation. YOUTH During this term, the Youth Girls began making efforts to develop and establish a strong bond among themselves. They met up every other Sunday from 10am - 12pm. These two hours were comprised of discussions on upcoming events and study circles conducted by a different Youth Girl each time. One of the major Seva activities that the Girls took on was cooking and delivering food to the Shopping Bag Lady, a shelter in downtown Toronto. Several Girls would also stay back to help serve food. Not only did the Girls provide food for this Shelter, they also collected and donated toiletries, recognizing the shelter home’s need for such items. The Youth Girls also helped organize a Christmas Bhajan, presenting a program called East Meets West which included recruiting, organizing, and training SSE children. With the guidance of the Youth, these SSE children performed Christmas carols, songs, and Bhajans with a mix of Eastern and Western instruments. The Youth also had presentations about different festivals that also occur around Christmas time that were celebrated by various other cultures. DEVOTIONAL As a Centre of Region 2, members of the Centre were all blessed when Baba gave us His permission to attend Prasanthi Nilayam as a group in December 2001. At that time, Swami also blessed the initial draft of the play entitled “Unity in Diversity” which was to be staged in front of Baba in July 2002. These blessings upon Region 2 coincided with those showered upon our Centre. SEVA “Service to man is service to God” is one of Baba’s principal teachings. In addition to our continued Seva activities of feeding the homeless every weekend, seasonal tree planting, park clean-ups, and food and clothing drives, our Centre also hosted a blood donor clinic for the entire region. Collectively, we were able to collect 76 units and 77 units for the years of 2001 and 2002, respectively, to commemorate Baba’s 76th and 77th birthdays. Educare At the SSE level, more children were enrolled in the program. Class sizes and the number of classes were increased. In order to instill and recreate the atmosphere in Prasanthi Nilayam, it became mandatory for all SSE students to dress in white and white. Furthermore, to facilitate the spiritual realization of SSE students and their families, the Value Parenting Program was initiated. The program focuses on new parents to the SSE program and assists them in becoming Sai parents. In tandem with the SSE program, the Value Parenting Program seeks to enable a harmonious household in which all family members, in unison, discover their spiritual reality. Page 18 | Highlights: 2001-2002 On July 18, 2002, 600 devotees from Region 2, including more than 300 members from the Scarborough Sai Centre, left Toronto for Puttaparthi. In accommodating the large group, an Air Canada counter at Pearson International airport was named “Pilgrimage to Prasanthi.” On July 20, 2002, with Baba’s permission, a large chartered flight was allowed to land in Puttaparthi carrying the Canadian devotees. Our mornings began with Baba’s darshan. We were given special seating and identified as a group by the scarves we all wore. Practices took up much time for the children, Youth, parents and organizers and everyone was given a special role to play. On July 24, 2002, Baba granted us the much-awaited permission to perform in front of Him. More than 60 Youths and nearly 147 children performed in front of Baba in the Sai Kulwant Hall. Swami was very happy with the program. At the end of the program, Baba joined the children on stage. On July 26, 2002, Swami blessed the devotees with a special discourse. Calling us “Prema Swarupa,” Swami encouraged us to make a transition in our lives for the better. He then sat for Bhajans in the interview room. Swami blessed His devotees with tokens of love, like sarees, a diamond ring, and a chain. While walking to the door, Swami asked to see the design for our Centre’s Building project. Looking at it, He blessed it by autographing it three times. Page 19 | Highlights: 2001-2002 HIGHLIGHTS: 2003-2004 YOUTH During this term, Youths began taking a larger role in regular Bhajans,by reading a message from Swami at every gathering and helping with setting up and dismantling the alter Youths also acted as Sevadals during the special functions. DEVOTION In light of helping everyone and, especially, SSE children on their spiritual paths, Likitha Japam books were distributed to devotees and students alike to stress the importance of and practice repeating God’s name. These books were then collected, along with other holy materials, to be laid within the foundation of what was to become the Centre’s new home for Swami. Also, a “Meet and Greet” event was held among the Youth Boys, the graduating Boys’ classes, and their parents where presentations were made and awareness was promoted of Youth activities to the pre-graduate SSE children as well as speaking to them about their experiences and responsibilities as Sai Youths. In addition, SSE children participated in the “Cents of Love” drive where they were given “Cents of Love” bottles and asked to put into practice one of the Human Values or sacrifice something they did not need but overly indulged in and fill up the bottle with coins. This exercise was not merely to fill up the bottles, but also to teach the SSE children the values behind filling up the bottle such as ceiling on desires, kindness, sharing, and caring. Additionally, a Youth shadowing system was conceptualized and introduced, where Youths would in effect “shadow” the roles and responsibilities of leaders in each wing (Spiritual, Education, and Seva) and the Building Committee. This was designed to bring greater understanding to the Youths in regards to the functioning of all the wings as well as for the purpose of promoting the responsibility that is inherent in these groups. This year was also the year when Ladies’ Day was first celebrated in a grand fashion, with dramatic and musical performances planned, organized, and performed by Ladies in the Parent Council, Gurus, and SSE students. ‘Ladies of the Year’, in order to honor more than one deserving Lady from the Centre, were also chosen to be recognized and appreciated for their dedication and tireless service within the Sai Organization. All of this garnered a very positive response from the congregation as a whole. EXCO/CENTER This was the year that the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough’s Musical Band was formed, with the assistance of Youths, SSE children, SSE Gurus and parents. All their time, energy and hard work were evident in the high standard of the performances. Furthermore, the Centre’s dreams of building it’s own home for Swami were quickly becoming established, with the outstanding loan on the land being paid in full. In light of this milestone, a Ganapathi pooja was performed at the site of the Centre’s future Centre Building to evoke the blessings of Lord Ganesha for its successful construction. EDUCARE This was the year when the interview process was first implemented in regards to SSE admissions and when participation in Value Parenting was made a mandatory requirement. A structured syllabus and curriculum was introduced to all three levels. This term also brought forth the creation of the parent council, a supportive body designed to assist the Educare Wing, which was formed with three office bearers and twelve active parent members. Study circles were commenced as well, being held for parents of SSE children during SSE class times. Page 20 | Highlights: 2003-2004 S eva An information desk was formed to act as a front line resource, providing information about the Centre’s activities as well as welcoming new devotees and guiding them in their needs and concerns. Devotees showed their compassion for those who were suffering across the world as a result of being affected by a horrendous tsunami by lovingly raising a donation of $9400 that was directly given to the Tsunami Relief Sri Sathya Sai Disaster Relief Fund in Sri Lanka. Another $1300 was given to the Central Trust through the Regional Coordinator. Devotees and Youths alike sorted out, folded, and packaged clothes at the Nagapooshani temple, which were then delivered to those in need in Asia. The Youth Boys took on an opportunity to go out and directly serve the community through the Toronto Area Community Living (TACL) Volunteering Services to entertain and help children with developmental disabilities every Tuesday. Entertainment included playing sports and board games, as well as developing friendships and bonds with the children by encouraging communication and interaction. The Youth Boys also organized the Spectacle Glass Drive in which they collected used eyeglasses in order to donate them to third world countries. Furthermore, they participated in lunchtime soccer tournaments that were held for the students of the Sathya Sai School, teaching them soccer skills, sportsmanship, and discipline. This was not all, as all Youths also took out time from their schedules to clean up both two Good and Flemingdon Parks. It was not merely the Youths and adult members of the Centre that came together to serve the needy, as SSE children also united through the Twoonie Drive to collect and donate $620 to Children’s Aid Society. Page 21 | Highlights: 2003-2004 HIGHLIGHTS: 2005-2006 Sai Ram DEVOTION EXCO/CENTER During this term, new Executive positions were established to manage the growing size and prominence of the Centre. Also, changes in leadership that were registered with taxation authorities were finally completed. Furthermore, this was the first time that members were able to claim G.S.T. payments and when tax receipts became automated. The executive committee also expanded from containing three members to five. The two new additional positions were the vice president and the assistant secretary. With the development of the new Centre Building project, a yagna was organized at the building site, to invoke divine blessings, on Sunday, August 28, 2005. A ground breaking ceremony was also held at our land site, for which Professor Anil Kumar and Dr. V.P. Singh attended as chief guests to also help invoke the blessings of Swami for the Centre Building project. Love All During these years, Scarborough Centre found spiritual advancements in the practice of meditation, veda chanting by devotees and opportunities for children and Youth to advance themselves within and outside the Centre. Consequently, a memorable Year Book was published during this term, not only to highlight contributions made by every member of the Centre but, also, to commemorate the 80th birthday of our Swami in conjunction with the 20th year anniversary of our Centre. EDUCARE The Center saw a boom in SSE children as 150 new students were accepted into the SSE program in 2005 with an additional 94 joining in 2006, bringing the total to over 750 students. Also, in this term, the SSE children participated in the Twoonie Program which promoted Ceiling on Desires. The program required our students to collect a Twoonie for every Seva activity they completed in their homes. This program allowed the children to practice ceiling on desires and the money that they saved was consequently used to help children in need. Also, a picnic was held for all the SSE students on our Centre Building site at the end of the SSE year. This is an annual event that is conducted so that the SSE children, parents and other devotees can interact with each other and have a good time. This event still continues to this day. Love all men without distinction, Know that mankind is a single community. Page 22 | Highlights: 2005-2006 Page 23 | Highlights: 2005-2006 HIGHLIGHTS: 2005-2006 DEVOTIONAL Veda chanting and meditation were introduced during our Bhajans to help devotees learn other spiritual tools which would ultimately help them understand the divinity within themselves. Members of our Centre were also encouraged to chant the Gayatri Mantra weekly on our Centre Building land site, to ask for Swami’s blessings in moving ahead with our Centre Building Project. YOUTH In 2005, our Youth Girls travelled to Puttaparthi to see our Beloved Swami and conducted many Seva Projects, some of which were done in Tiruchi, India. An additional trip to Puttaparthi was taken by our Youth Boys in 2006 at a regional level. They performed various Seva activities such as gardening, cleaning the canteens, and so on. They also prepared a music program and had an opportunity to play basketball with the students of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. In December 2006, the Youth Girls dedicated their time and energy to Street Haven Women’s Shelter. The Girls initiated a winter clothing drive at the Centre to collect jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves and other winter appropriate clothing to take to the shelter and give out to the homeless. They also cooked and served food at the shelter and took the initiative to personally go out and invite the homeless to join in for the meal. They did not stop there, as they also sat down and conversed with all the homeless who took the invitation and came. Some of the local Seva projects that were conducted by the Youth included a Seniors’ Day, where they entertained the elderly at Tuxedo Court. The Youth were also given the opportunity to take part in a shadow program, where a Youth would assist a coordinator in the organization. This program was implemented and served as a mentoring program where the Youth would learn how to effectively work in the Sai Organization. The Youth also played a major role in designing and publishing the Centre’s Yearbook. The Centre also introduced a new sloka class for our SSE students. In addition to this class, the SSE children were given the opportunity to recite the slokas that they learned before every bhajan. Above all of this, there was an increased number of opportunities for the youth and SSE children to sing and take part in regular Bhajans. In the bi-weekly Bhajan list, it was mandatory to include at least two Youths and three SSE children to sing. Furthermore, separate Bhajans were allocated specifically for Youth and SSE children. The Centre also attended the annual Sai Spiritual Retreat in Ottawa in the summer. S eva During this term, members of the Centre showed their generosity through the sponsorship of twenty-five needy children from Sri Lanka. These members donated the funds that were needed in order to provide these children with food, clothing, and education. The Centre also held a Seniors’ event at Tuxedo Court, for all the Senior members of our Centre. The event was held to show them our appreciation and love for their years of dedicated service. Serve All Page 24 | Highlights: 2005-2006 Page 25 | Highlights: 2005-2006 HIGHLIGHTS: 2007-2008 H elp E ver EXCO/CENTER EDUCARE This year marked the initiation of computerized tax receipts, which allowed a permanent record of finances to be kept within the Centre. The Executive Committee and Wing Coordinators contributed to the purchasing of a new Centre laptop and projector—both essential items that all Centre members benefited from. An inventory list of items belonging to the Centre was created and maintained in order to facilitate an ongoing system for accounting for all Centre items. A special group was also formed to review the Centre’s Constitution on specific maters and the amendments were received well by one and all. DEVOTION This term marked the introduction of the recognition of our Sai Brothers on Fathers’ Day for their contributions and service to our Centre. The Centre also conducted two workshops entitled “Nine Point Code of Conduct” and “Seva Workshop”. The Study Circle program was expanded and “Thought for the Day” messages began to be distributed via email to all the Active Members. The Centre introduced the SSE Retreat for the first time after ten years—an event which proved to be successful and continues to this day. This event provided our Centre members the chance to get together and enhance their spirituality in a fun and focused way. Many new books, CDs and videos were purchased to be used in the library which allowed an increase in the number of available resources for the Gurus. Gurus were given the opportunity to borrow these resources during their training session as well as on Bhajan days. Many Gurus utilized the great resource Centre and the students benefitted immensely. The books were stored in devotees’ houses as the Centre did not have its own building. These dedicated devotees brought in the books on Bhajan days and displayed them to facilitate their borrowing and returning by the devotees and the Gurus. Page 26 | Highlights: 2007-2008 Many new programs and activities were introduced in the Educare Wing of the Centre. A re-registration program was established for the SSE classes. Ceiling on Desires was introduced among the SSE children—this annual program encouraged the SSE children to think about learning to limit their desires and discover new ways to serve others. Standardized Tests for Group One Level Three and Group Two Level Three classes was initiated, to ensure that all students were able to apply the knowledge and values taught through the SSE classes. The Standardized Tests continue to this day and have helped the Educare Team develop lesson plans and curriculum that best meet the needs and level of all our SSE students. The Educare Team introduced “on the spot” essay writing competitions in which the SSE students are required to write an essay in class on varying topics related to SSE spiritual content. Winners from each Group were selected and recognized for their accomplishments every year. Our SSE students and Youth were given opportunities to speak to the congregation on special occasions, to show their involvement and valuable contributions to the growth and development of the Centre. In addition to this, a “Me to We” program was introduced to students of Group Three and above. The intent of this program was to help SSE children move from an inward focus to an outward focus by looking to serve the community and, as a result, Page 27 | Highlights: 2007-2008 HIGHLIGHTS: 2007-2008 EDUCARE(CONTINUED) H u rt YOUTH Our Centre Youth participated in the World Youth Conference in 2007, held in Puttaparthi, where they were blessed to be in Swami’s presence. In December 2007, the Youth took part in a large community Seva project, which involved organizing a Christmas party for needy families within the Oakridge community. The party was held for underprivileged families in the Victoria Park and Danforth area at the Oakridge Community Centre. The event included games and arts and crafts for both children and parents, carol singing, and gift giving. The Scarborough Centre Youth were actively involved in this Regional event, which turned out to be a great success. It really gave a chance for the families to take their minds off their troubles and celebrate the holidays surrounded with people who cared. Workshop for Grade 6 and Grade 8 girls in the summer of 2008. This workshop provided solutions and advice from older Youths to the SSE girls who were transitioning from Elementary to Junior High and High Schools. The older girls spoke to them about issues that they may face during this transition, addressing topics such as friendship, self-image and media, siblings and parents. The two-day weekend workshop (one day for each group) was filled with open discussions, games and activities, and breakfast/ lunch. humanity. Programs were also implemented to get the parents of the SSE students involved in Centre activities. Parents and their children created a special Greeting Card Project to cheer up children who underwent treatments for illness and were hospitalized. Parents were also invited and trained during Guru Training to join as Gurus in the SSE Program. N ever Much effort was made to bring the awareness of the dynamic Value Parenting Program, as many parents were interested in the program. Each academic year, two fifteen-week sessions were conducted in both English and Tamil. This program broadened the vision of the parents and increased their participation in the Centre activities. S eva During this term, the Centre donated a float for the annual Walk for Values event. Many volunteers from the Centre, including both adults and youths, generously bestowed their time and energy to help build this float. The Centre float exhibited the value of Truth. Furthermore, two positions as Coordinators for each Wing were created and more devotees were allowed to participate and serve in the Centre. The introduction of job shadowing, where Youth members worked under each Wing’s Coordinators to learn how activities were executed in each Wing, also promoted the chance for the Youth to get involved in the Centre’s Seva activities. The Centre also took the opportunity to extend their love to others when members made the decision to help Shane Bernier, an 8 year old boy suffering from cancer, who wanted to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most number of birthday cards. On May 13th, 2007, all members of the Centre, from SSE children to EXCO, wrote birthday cards for Shane and mailed them to him and helped him reach his goal. The Youth Girls held their first SSE Transition Page 28 | Highlights: 2007-2008 Page 29 | Highlights: 2007-2008 HIGHLIGHTS: 2009-2010 EDUCARE A structured program for SSE with a specific syllabus and lesson plans for each level was created. Group 4 Levels 1 to 3 were introduced according to the mandate from Prasanthi Nilayam. The new group 4 graduating group participated in the Centre’s annual blood donor clinic which was able to collect 100 pints of blood to commemorate Swami’s 84th birthday. Senior students and Youth were given the opportunity to make presentations on special occasions (Deepavali, Ladies Day) and also to perform projects. The Educare Coordinator was given the opportunity to host an Appreciation Day for the Gurus, Assistant Gurus, Youth Assistants, Parent Helpers and all the volunteers of the SSE program. Senior SSE students and the Gurus Team were able to attend presentations for further growth on different topics (i.e. Islam and “Swami and Me”). This year also marked the commencing of collecting SSE donations within a stipulated time frame. A presentation on global warming and Swami’s teachings on our environment was created and displayed at the 2009 walk for Value event by SSE students. The Educare program partnered with a Seniors’ home to enable class visits to see seniors and spend quality time with them. EXCO/CENTER These were the years that saw commencement of Centre Building work. On July 15, 2009, an agreement was signed between the general contractor and the Centre to build the Centre Building. On September 1, 2009, work on the historic building began with the contractor commencing excavation and site services. The Chanku Stapanam held on November 9, 2009 was very successful raising $210,000 on that day alone with over 600 people in attendance. By the end of 2010, work was almost 90% completed. With our Beloved Swami’s blessings, the Centre celebrated its first official Bhajan at the Centre Building on November 23, 2010. Thereafter, Bhajans were held every Thursday with limited capacity. Also, five sets of Swami’s Patham were received from Puttaparthi in January 2010. Additionally, with the help of community leaders, the Centre submitted the Trillium Grant application and completed the necessary groundwork to obtain the loan. Moreover, negotiations with few banks and private institutions for construction loan was ongoing, with an agreement finally reached with RBC and the successful negotiation of $1.5 million for the construction loan in 2010. S E VA A Seva workshop was conducted at Sai Illam to enrich the Centre members in the theme of the Nine Point Code of Conduct. Moreover, many initiatives to increase Seva activities for senior SSE students were undertaken by the Youth and Gurus. The Centre also held a Blood Donor Clinic and participated in tree planting. Page 30 | Highlights: 2007-2008 Page 31 | Highlights: 2009-2010 HIGHLIGHTS: 2009-2010 YOUTH DEVOTION In August 2010, many of our Centre members achieved another lifelong dream in joining a pilgrimage to Puttaparthi. All Centre members engaged in many spiritual practices to prepare for the journey. Hundreds of adults, Youth and children from our Centre arrived in Puttaparthi by August 16, 2012. Our SSE children and Youth were blessed with the opportunity to perform in front of Swami on August 24 and 25. The SSE children’s play was based on multicultural aspect of the Canadian society, which integrated Swami’s teachings. The National Youths created a musical medley with songs in both English and French, composed and written by the Youths of Canada. Swami gifted both the SSE group and Youth Girls with sarees and white material for pant and shirt, and the Youth Boys with vetis. Centre members also had the opportunity to participate in the Pre-World Conference. In 2009, the Youth Girls conducted the annual SSE Camp for Scarborough SSE girls aged eleven to thirteen at the Sathya Sai School. This camp helped the Youth Girls connect with the SSE children as well as provide the children with resources and people they could look up to as big sisters. In 2010, the Youth Girls launched a project called the “Year of Sadhana” project in which they committed to engaging in at least one Seva or Spiritual activity for every month of the calendar year. Some of their projects included school kits, Operation Christmas Child, Bone Marrow Drive, university preparation workshops, ceiling on desires activities, reading Sai literature, Christmas carol singing, food and clothing drives, tree planting, Earth Hour, Walk for Values, CIBC Run for the Cure and many more. This project has continued on to date. This was also a term of many new opportunities for the Centre’s children, Youth and adults to create personal connections with Swami during Bhajans. The children of the Centre were given the opportunity to offer flowers to Swami on the Bhajan days adjacent to their birthdays. Also, the allowed number of Bhajan sponsors was increased along with the addition of more Youth singers in the Bhajan sessions. Ladies were given the chance to perform Aarathi and to offer rice or kunkumam when reciting Ashtothram. Also, one whole Bhajan was conducted by the Seniors with speeches by our senior Aunties and Uncles and another special Bhajan was dedicated as a Memorial Bhajan to remember and pray for the souls of all the loves ones who are no longer with us. Furthermore, the Centre was honoured in hosting Satsang during the visits of Dr. Sara Pavan from Australia and Brother Jegatheesan. Page 32 | Highlights: 2009-2010 Page 33 | Highlights: 2009-2010 H I G H L I G H T S : 2 0 11 EXCO/CENTER THE TERM OF 2011-2012 WAS A VERY EVENTFUL ONE WITH THE CENTRE REACHING SEVERAL LARGE AND SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES IN ITS HISTORY. THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THIS TERM CAN ONLY BE RIGHTFULLY CREDITED TO OUR DEAR SWAMI. EXCO/CENTER(CONTINUED) Madhani, Chair of the Toronto Grant Review Team, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Dr. Pon Sivaji addressed the congregation before the plaque/award was officially handed to the President of the Centre. Scarborough Sai Centre Newsletter was re-introduced by the Youth and the first publication was out for the months of September and October 2011. YOUTH With the passage of time, the number of SSE children that were joining the Centre rapidly increased beyond boundaries and, with it, was an increase in programs by many folds. As a result, devotees began to seriously consider having a place of their own. With Swami’s blessings and support of the devotees, friends, and wellwishers, a historic monumental Centre was constructed and completed by May 2011. On March 5, just before Swami left His physical form, He blessed May 6 as the date on which He wished the Centre to be inaugurated. This was truly a gift from Swami as, not only would the Centre celebrate its beginning in its own new home, but also His beginning as our Kaliyuga Avatar, on His mother’s birthday Eswaramma day. Inauguration celebrations took place for 3 days from May 6 to May 8. Poojas were performed to invoke the blessings of the Gods and, on the evening of the second day, Swami’s alumni students presented a scintillating musical concert, “Athmageetham”. On the last day, Easwaramma day was celebrated as per tradition with the SSE children’s annual programs. In total, approximately 2,500 devotees attended the function on all three days. 2011 continued to be a productive year for our Centre. On August 4, The Ontario Trillium Foundation, through the Community Capital Fund (CCF) provided the Centre with an investment of $489,500 over one year to complete construction of this community Centre to serve the South Asian community in Scarborough. Minister Chan, MPP Balkissoon, MPP Gerry Phillips, Bahadur Page 34 | Highlights: 2011 OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network is responsible for finding and matching volunteer donors to patients who require stem cell transplants. OneMatch is a member of an international network of registries, where more than eleven million donors and over fifty registries in other countries are available. The information is kept on file for future records and, when a patient needs stem cells of the exact match, the donors are contacted. In some cases, stem cell transplant is the only cure for their disease. On February 27, the above project was initiated by the Youth Girls and Group 4 Girls, as a part of their “Year of Sadhana” initiative and was carried out at Woburn Collegiate. Eligible candidates were from ages 17 to 50, healthy, and willing to donate stem cells to anyone in need. The registration process and a quick swab from the cheek took only 10 minutes. The response was good as 150 donors from all Centres registered on that day. The concept of saving a life inspired many to participate in this program as they willingly came forward to donate with only one thing in their minds - “selfless service”. In addition to their help in Educare, managing the sound system, centre website, assisting the secretary, they have taken the responsibility for the first time as youth Bhajan co-ordinators to organize youth Bhajans once a month. The Youth dedicated a musical program “Dharma Swaroopa”- A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, on his 86th Birthday celebrations. H I G H L I G H T S : 2 0 11 A P R I L 2 4 T H 2 0 11 Our Beloved Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, our Dearest Swami, left His physical form on April 24, at 7:40 am Indian time due to cardiorespiratory failure. We grieve the loss of our Beloved Swami, the embodiment of Divine Love, who left us on Easter Sunday, the day of Divine Resurrection. Although we had not officially moved into our new Centre, we were partially occupying it, and were able to have an all night vigil with prayers for Swami’s speedy recovery. When He eventually left His physical form, we continued to hold Bhajans over the succeeding days. Just as our mothers and fathers were our protectors when we were children, Swami has been, and always will be the Divine Protector for all of us, young and old. Lord of Lords, Bhagavan Baba, our Divine Mother and Father, may we always love you unwaveringly, follow You unfalteringly, and find You always in our hearts. These activities included friendly visits to senior homes by Group 4 Level 3 students that took place once a month. Further, Group 1 Level 1 students participated in entertaining seniors by their Christmas performances at various senior homes. SSE children assisted in making sandwiches for the homeless that were delivered by the Youth Boys. Group 4 Level 3 boys participated in the “Out of the Cold” program, which included friendly visits, meal distribution, and clean up for the homeless at a church for a few months. Members of the Seva Wing took charge for the maintenance of the Centre by going three times a week to tidy up and making sure that the Centre is kept clean at all times. Seva members also graciously took responsibility to clean the Centre after some of the special and rental functions. EDUCARE Group 4 year 3 children were placed in classrooms to assist the Gurus and assigned seva project/duties in order to gain hands-on training before they merge into the Youth group. A new three-session schedule was arranged for SSE classes on Sundays, and Group 4 Level 3 classes were extended. The Educare Wing also helped enrich special events by their participation, especially during the Navarathiri celebrations. This year, Group 2 Level 3 SSE children also had the opportunity to go on field trips to learn more about other faiths; for example visits to an Ismail Jamathkana and a Jewish Synagogue. Senior Gurus and National Educare Team held several workshops for Gurus such as Group 4 Gurus workshop, Guru Refresher workshop, and New Gurus Workshop. On the last day of the academic year of 2011, the Educare Wing, supported by the Seva Wing, organized a BBQ in the parking lot of the Centre. Being the last day, SSE children received their report cards and enjoyed the BBQ. The Youth Girls organized various activities for the children to take part in as well. Page 38 | Highlights: 2011 Page 39 | Highlights: 2011 HIGHLIGHTS: 2012 YOUTH EXCO/CENTER The momentum from 2011 flowed right into 2012 with the New Year bringing with it some fantastic news. Within just a couple months into the year, seven devotees were recognized and awarded the Ontario Volunteer Service Award from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. Later on in the year, in July, the Centre also commenced its mortgage payments to the bank to begin paying off the loan that was taken on to assist in the construction of the Centre. With the help of Trillium funding, the Centre was able to install a new sound system, kitchen, security system and elevator. The Youth, for the first time, organized a “University and Careers information” seminar for the parents of SSE students who were in their final years of high school. This seminar sought to inform parents about what to expect when their children enter university, as well, to clear myths and misunderstandings that both parents and students have in regards to university life. High school teachers, parents, and recent graduates were brought together as a panel for this discussion to provide well-rounded information. As well, accessible resources were provided to help prepare both parents and their children for university studies. Reviews from this seminar were very positive and many parents were pleased with the information they received. A “Meet and Greet” event was also organized by the Youth and held on August 12. In the past 25 years, many seniors had worked hard to build the Centre physically, financially, and intellectually. Regrettably, some of them are inactive today due to varying issues. Although the Youths interact with the adults and seniors at Bhajans, sadly enough, they are unable to identify and connect with them. The “Meet and Greet” was an ideal event organized by the Youth to narrow down the generation gap. At the “Meet and Greet” event, senior members and adults were introduced to the Youth. It was a fun filled afternoon that took place between 12:30 to 4:30 pm with interactive activities where both groups, approximately 45, intermingled and got to know each other in a relaxed environment. As the reviews of the event were encouraging, it appears that the Youth may decide to have another one in the near future. Do Onto Others as you would have them do onto you Love ALL Serve ALL EDUCARE During this year, the Educare Wing also took various initiatives to improve and expand on the previous activities. One such initiative was the development of an SSE Marching Band that performed for important occasions as Swami’s Mahasamadhi, Walk for Values, Easwaramma day, and the MPP’s annual summer event. In honour of the 10th anniversary of the Walk for Values, a Human Values Art and Essay competition was held nationwide. Though the judges were blown away by more than 180 entries, they could only choose a few winners in each category. Substantial number of winners were from the Scarborough Sai Centre SSE program.. This year also, on the last day of the academic year, the Educare Wing organized a BBQ. Together with this, a garage sale was organized for the first time. Devotees and friends of the congregation brought new or nearly new saleable items. The response was overwhelming and the collection from the garage sale was substantial. There was lots of fun in the parking lot and Mother Nature, too, blessed us with wonderful weather to enjoy ourselves outdoors. Page 40 | Highlights: 2012 NEED MORE INFORMATION: CALL : 416-335-7242 OR VISIT www.saicentre.net HIGHLIGHTS: 2012 DEVOTION On January 14, 2012, Sai Brothers and Sisters celebrated Thai Pongal by boiling rice in a ‘pongal paanai’ outside at the entrance to the Centre despite the harsh, below zero temperatures. The Centre looked festive with thoranams and kolam. Pongal was offered to Swami and later to the congregation as prasadam. This certainly was an auspicious beginning for our Centre. January 29, 2012 marked the first time that Maha Shivarathri was observed by our Centre throughout the night, commencing at 4:15 pm and continuing until 5:00 the following morning. Milk abhisekam and offering of vilvam leaves and vibhuthi to Padukas and Lingam took place throughout the night while Bhajans were sung in praise of Lord Shiva. Ehadhasa Rudram was also chanted from 11:00 pm to 3:00 am. devotees from our Centre and continued for four months, concluding on June 12. On average, 20-25 devotees attended the training sessions with devotion, dedication and determination. It was inspiring to the adults to hear the daughter of the instructor, a 10 year old SSE girl jointly chanting and teaching the Rudram with her father. This certainly motivated the adults to learn the Rudram without giving up half way. Ever since, our Centre chants Rudram on Tuesday evenings between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm and on special functions. Currently, Sai Rudram is being taught for SSE students and adults. Furthermore, the Centre was graced with visits and talks from various important people in the Sai Organization and leaders from multi-faith community. A workshop on “A Perspective on Sri Sathya Sai’s Message and Legacy” was held by Dr. Sara Pavan to an audience of approximately 200 devotees. The workshop was opened up to all Centres within Region 2, On June 24, the Centre received the opportunity to listen to Whistle Wizard, Mr. Siva Prasad, perform special devotional Bhajans in an evening that turned out to be simply whimsical. Swami in one of His discourses said, “It is my wish that everyone should chant Rudram, whatever caste, creed, gender they may be!” Rudram is the part of Rik and Yajur Vedhas, codified by saints in Sanskrit. Rudram praises the different attributes of Lord Rudra/Shiva. Swami said that Rudram was the best out of the four vedhas and the dharaka mantra “Om Namasivaya” was the best of the best in Rudram. The positive In July 2012, Guru Poornima was specially vibrations created by Rudram chanting will celebrated through prayers and Bhajans remove the negativity in the world and both in the morning and evening. overcome all difficulties. On February 6, fulfilling Swami’s wish, we began Rudram classes on the auspicious day of Thai Poosam at our Centre. Classes were conducted by a couple of Page 42 | Highlights: 2012 S E VA The first anniversary of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s Maha Samadhi was commemorated at the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough on April 24, 2012. This coincided with the 25 years of Community Service provided by this Centre. To mark both these significant occasions, past Presidents initiated the ‘Love on Wheels’ project. The response from devotees was overwhelming and they opened their hearts and raised money to purchase forty wheelchairs. The wheelchairs were distributed to two major hospitals in Toronto, the Scarborough Hospital Foundation and the Scarborough Rouge Valley Health System, with twenty wheelchairs being donated to each. These wheelchairs carried Swami’s quote: “Love all, serve all”. Sai members believe that service was the highest form of spiritual sadhana and when done with the spirit of “love all, serve all” it becomes a truly rewarding experience. The success of the project was summed up by the example of a 12-year old SSE girl’s determination to raise money for two of the wheelchairs. The Walk for Values has been hosted annually by the Sathya Sai School Parent Council under the auspices of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organization in Canada. This year was a special year, as they celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Walk. The Walk was held at Dundas Square on May 27 and the 3 km walk spread right through the downtown core. The t-shirts were all white with the imprints of their logo in red and blue along with a Canadian flag. In accordance with this year’s theme, “Serve and Inspire”, Centre devotees participated and provided full support for all service projects. Due to earthquakes and heavy rains, Haitians become homeless. As a result, Haitians are in desperate need of proper materials to sleep on. Starting in June, Sai Sisters from our Centre have been regularly meeting once a week with devotion and commitment to crochet mats to send to Haiti. The mats are shipped to Haiti to be used as surgical and regular beds for those who are sleeping under tents on the damp, hard ground, which is infested with insects. These mats are crocheted from milk bag strips called plarn (plastic yarn) that are chemically treated to prevent bacterial infections. They are washable and quick to dry. Additionally, this helps the environment by recycling the plastic bags and giving a practical use for it as they take almost 40-100 years to decompose. It takes around 150 to 200 bags to complete one mat depending on the size as smaller mats are given to children and larger ones are used for the adults. The congregation of our Centre on an ongoing basis supply milk bags as their contribution towards the milk bag project. These mats are sent to Haiti through the Salvation Army. Complying with the city regulations, after completion of the Centre Building, trees and shrubs had to be planted in and around the Centre. Trustees and Seva Wing chose a Sunday and auspiciously performed the tree planting ceremony with pooja and Bhajans out in the garden under a tent. It took place on September 16 in the presence of 40-50 devotees, parents, and office bearers. It was a pleasant day to be outdoors. Trees such as Kentucky Coffee, Norway Red Maple and Ivory Silk were some of the few trees that were planted and devotees sponsored trees and shrubs in memory of their loved ones. The trees will proudly stand along Scottfield Drive and Finch Ave East. The growth of the trees will give a positive vision for the future and symbolize the spiritual progress of our SSE children. The trees will grow, thrive, bloom, and live-forever and so will the future generation of our Centre where our Beloved Swami dwells. Page 43 | Highlights: 2012 BIRTH OF OUR DIVINE HOME Initially, the Centre was run out of Woburn Collegiate but, with a boom in enrollment for SSE classes which was beyond Woburn’s limits, the Centre was pushed to finalize a place of its own. With Swami’s grace, the Centre successfully purchased a three-acre land located at Middlefield Road and Finch Avenue East, that was found in 2001, and paid an advance on February 10, 2002. The transaction was completed by June 10, when devotees opened up their hearts and raised $600,000 in just four months. The Centre Building blueprint and layout plans were drawn with suggestions from many Centre members and was successfully completed. On July 26, 2002, Swami blessed the building project by signing it three times in the presence of a large Canadian group that went to enact a play in Puttaparthi. In 2003, a team comprising of eight dedicated Trustees, Chairman, and Centre President, formed a Committee to make this dream a reality, with a vision of building a permanent home. Between 2003 and 2009, their roles ranged from finding commitments for support from well-wishers and devotees, to daily maintenance of and weekly prayers at the land site, to garnering support from community leaders, to evaluating financing options, to liaising with public officials, to detailed layout and design plans, to arranging traditional ceremonies. In August 2005, as customary, a ‘bhoomi puja’ was performed with Yagna and prayers. This was followed by a ground-breaking ceremony a year later, held in May 2006, for which community leaders and dignitaries were invited to participate in the rituals. The long awaited Building Permit was issued on May 2, 2008, by the City of Toronto, to commence work on the building. This set the ball rolling and, fourteen months later, on July 15, 2009, an agreement was signed between the General Contractor and the Centre to build the Centre Building. Two months later, in September 2009, work on building the historic home for our Divine Lord began. in daily supervision and interaction with both third-party providers and volunteers from inside and outside the centre. This period saw extensive work done by planners, engineers, architects, contractors, consultants, inspectors, surveyors, lawyers, financiers, suppliers, movers, cleaners, locksmiths, carpenters, sub-contractors, plumbers, electricians, roofers, tilers, bricklayers, window and heating installers, and countless of other services providers. There were many challenges and hurdles, but with prayers and unwavering faith in Swami the Centre Building continued to be built. A very important and auspicious ceremony took place on November 1st - the Chanku Sthapanam - that is the laying of the Chanku at the designated site of the future altar. For this ceremony, more than 600 devotees earnestly participated despite the biting cold weather of November. By November 22, 2010, 90% of work in the building was completed. On November 23, 2010, our first Bhajan was held at the lower level of the Centre Building celebrating Swami’s birthday. Thereafter, Bhajans were held on Thursdays with a limited number of devotees. In Puttaparthi, on March 4, 2011, our Beloved Swami blessed the inauguration date as May 6th, 2011 before he left his physical form. We were extremely fortunate to get his blessings. Thus, on May 6, 7, & 8 2011, inauguration of the Centre Building took place with over 2,500 devotees in attendance. Going forward, roles of the Trustees have changed. Focus has shifted to financial matters with long-term vision of paying off the loan that was taken to build the Centre Building. In addition, Trustees have taken on day-to-day responsibility of maintenance and caretaking of our Divine Home and making it available to SSE children, devotees and visitors. Birth of a baby takes 10 months; birth of this Divine Home has taken 10 years on the auspicious day of Eswaramma’s day.
