NCSD and the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) are pleased
to announce the release of two new resources on the Female Condom. The goal of these resources
is to publicize and educate on the fact that the female condom is reimbursable with a prescription.
Under the Afforable Care Act (ACA), all new insurance plans (both individual and
employer-sponsored) are required to cover all FDA-approved methods of contraception, sterilization,
and related education and counseling without cost-sharing, including the female condom. All state
Medicaid programs must cover family planning services and supplies without cost-sharing for
enrolled individuals of reproductive age and in many states, there are family planning “expansion
programs” that serve as an important source of contraceptive coverage for many low-income women
who are not eligible for full-benefit Medicaid.
With the female condom being reimbursable, there exists a tremendous opportunity to educate
providers and patients that cost barriers have been significantly lowered. Included in these
materials is information on how to write a prescription for the female condom. While these particular
pieces focus on the use of receptive condoms as reimbursable for females as a birth control method,
NCSD continues to promote the use of receptive condoms as an important tool for disease
prevention for females AND males.
The first piece is a factsheet for providers, giving background on the female condom and its
reimbursability, including codes and a prescription sample. The second piece is designed for
patients, to educate them on the availability of the female condom via prescription.
The factsheet for providers is available here. [1] And click here for the palm card for patients [2]. If
