Greetings Sorors and Fraters
t is Spring! I am delighted to
share with you just as the trees
are blossoming and the buds
have burst into beautiful flowers,
our beloved Sorority, Chi Eta Phi
Sorority, Inc. is alive and breaming
with hope, excitement and renewal.
It’s Spring!
I
of the College of Nursing, and
many faculty, family and friends of
the nine beautiful Tau Chi Betas. I
was delighted to see many of the
Tau Chi Betas at the Northeast
Regional Meeting held at the
Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in
Dover, Delaware.
I have had the privilege to
attend all of the Regional
Conferences and to meet and talk
with many of our members
individually and in small groups.
Communication is the key to
success and as I have traveled
across the country to the various
Conferences, I have heard your
voices. I love the excitement and
the gracious kindness that
permeated throughout the
conferences.
May 2015 is an exciting time
for both the Iota Chi Chapter of
the Bronx, New York and Theta
Chi Chapter in Queens, New York
as both Chapters celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of their original
chartering. Each Chapter expects to
have original charter members in
attendance as they celebrate this
Golden Anniversary. I congratulate
and thank both Iota Chi Chapter
and Theta Chi Chapter for their
ongoing contributions to the
success of the Sorority and the
residents of New York that they
serve.

The New Dawn is underway.
We have initiated the electronic
submission of the Service Report
and more than half the chapters are
utilizing this tool. There have been
minor issues which we are working
on to make user friendly. The
changes will be forthcoming. To
date we have 400 entries into our
electronic reporting system. A copy
of each region’s reporting data will
be mailed by May 31, 2015 to all
directors and chapter basilei. This
information will also be shared
with the Research Committee.
As we prepare for Boulè, this is
a friendly reminder that we will be
honoring the sorors and fraters with
25 and 50 years of uninterrupted
service. If you will achieve 25 or
50 years between June 1, 2013 and
May 31, 2015, please submit your
name, chapter name and intake date
to the 1st Supreme Anti-Basileus
by May 1, 2015. See you in
Indianapolis, IN at Boulè.

Inc. Alpha Eta Chapter presented
information on Kidney Disease and
performed blood pressure
screenings March 2015.
Alpha Eta Chapter sorors
presented Kidney Sunday in 8
churches March 2015. Over 200
parishioners received pamphlets,
with 60 blood pressure screenings
done with 10 referrals. Sorors did
face to face follow-ups on the 10
referrals.

Zeta Chi Chapter
Soror Ann Thompson
coordinated a breast cancer
awareness program in collaboration
with the Dan L. Duncan Cancer
Center at South Union Church of
Christ on October 26, 2014. The
program consisted of a 20 minute
monologue from a cancer survivor
outlining her steps from finding the
first lump to mammogram to
treatment and life thereafter.
Additionally, she emphasized the
importance of self-breast exams,
annual mammograms, and diet and
weight control. A risk assessment

for breast cancer was completed by
participants with individual
counseling by a physician. A
discussion, followed by a question
and answer session, was conducted
on breast cancer diagnosis,
treatment, and prognosis and breast
cancer in men. Over 150 men and
women participated in the program.
Sorors Dorothy Stephens and
Nancy Harris assisted in program
implementation.
Zeta Chi Chapter members of
South Union Church presented a
poster display and distributed
printed information to increase
congregational awareness of
“healthy hearts.” Apples and gifts
were presented to survivors. The
congregation participated in
recognition of “Go Red Day” by
wearing red to indicate awareness
of problems and solutions to
improving heart functioning. There
were approximately 350 in
attendance that had access to the
information.

Lucinda Harris has been named
Soror of the Year for Alpha
Chapter.
Soror Dr. Bernadine Lacey,
honorary member of Alpha,
received the R. Louise McManus
medal from Teachers College
Columbia University. Dr.
McManus was the first person
ever to earn a PhD in nursing. The
American Academy of Nursing
named Soror Lacey a “Living
Legend.” Soror Gail Riddick has
also been invited to become a
member of Howard University
Golden Key International Honor
Society.

The Virginia Commissioner of
Health recently appointed Soror
Melody Armstrong to a four year
term on the Advisory Council on
Health Disparity & Health Equity
(ACHDHE) for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The purpose of
the ACHDHE is to provide subject
matter expertise as it relates to
health disparities among vulnerable
populations.

Norfolk State University’s
Department of Nursing & Allied
Health, was selected by the YWCA
South Hampton Roads as an
Outstanding Woman of the Year, in
the area of maternal-child
medicine. She was recognized for
her role in the first delivery of a
baby conceived by in-vitro
fertilization in the US and her
continued work educating and
caring for vulnerable populations.
She was one of 13 women honored
who have epitomized the YWCA
mission: “Eliminating racism,
empowering women”.
Omega Chapter received an
award at the Northeast Regional
Conference for participation in the
November 2014 March of Dimes
Prematurity Awareness month.
Sorors Barbara Royster and
Linda Taylor-Lowry facilitated a
prematurity awareness class at
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth
VA.

Howell, always working diligently
behind the scene. Her Omega
Chapter sisters know how hard
she works and how well deserving
she is. We love and appreciate her
and all of the contributions that she
has made over the years to Omega
Chapter.

In Loving Memory
Soror Ethel Cornelia Summerhill Bridges passed on December
29, 2014. Soror Bridges began her education at Mt. Zion School in
the bend of the Tennessee River in Landerdale County Alabama. She attended Alabama
A & M College but graduated from Grady Nursing School in Atlanta, Georgia as a nurse
cadet in 1947. Soror Bridges later earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the
University of Detroit. She was a lifelong student and teacher of nursing, maintaining her
nursing license until her passing. She worked in hospitals and nursing homes in
Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina and Illinois. Soror Bridges was an
active member of Kappa Phi Chapter. The Times Daily Newspaper of Florence,
Alabama quoted Soror Bridges in an article about her nursing career during Nurse Week
2014, “… I worked in VA hospitals and city hospitals. I didn’t care if they paid well or
not, I just wanted to do the best for everybody… When that light came on and you
were on my floor, you got up and answered it.” Her feisty nature and desire to do
everything the right way earned her the label of ‘Sergeant Bridges’ among her fellow
nurses.
