s c i p o T Rocket 4th Grade Edition February 23, 2011 Mee ting David Uran by Kayl a Dyer When I interviewed the mayor of Crown Point, at first I was very nervous. When he came in through the door he asked me if I was ready. He took me into his office and we sat down at his conference table. I had prepared the following five questions for him: 1) Do you have any pets? Yes, two dogs, a Tibetan Poodle and a White Westie that was a rescue dog. 2) What is the craziest part about your job? The hours, it is not a nine to five kind of job. Mother Nature plays the biggest part in making the craziest parts of my job. 3) Do you have fun being the mayor? Yes, the best part is working with kids and sharing stories with them. 4) What are you trying to accomplish? I have a lot of ideas for improvements, mostly working with fixing flooding problems in the area right now. 5) What will you try to do for kids in Crown Point? We are currently working on revamping the parks for sports and play. Using recycled materials in the playgrounds. I enjoyed meeting the mayor. He was a very kind man, he made me feel comfortable and even let me sit in his chair. Crown Point is lucky to have David Uran as our Mayor. Notre dame is #7 in latest top 25 poll by Dylan paul The Fighting Irish have put together a big run in the Big East Conference by winning seven games in a row, including great wins over #4 Pittsburgh and #15 Louisville. The seven game winning streak has brought Notre Dame’s overall record to 21-4 which gives them 2nd place in the Big East Conference. Ben Hansborough has been a big leader for the Irish averaging 17.2 points per game and 4 assists per game, while Tim Abromitis has also done well for the Irish, averaging 14.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. My Dad said, “The Irish have a great chance of doing well in the NCAA Tournament this year. They play solid defense and can score against almost anyone in the country.” The latest projection for the NCAA tournament has the Irish as a #2 seed in the Southwest bracket. My best friend, Jake Burford said, “Notre Dame is playing BEAST! They are going to do good in the tournament.” If the Irish continue to play this well the tournament should be one of the best they ever had. Here are opinions of other students on the recess subject: Fourth grader, Cymry Hughes said, “Indoor recess is okay because you can’t run off energy. It feels just like free time.” She also said she prefers outdoor recess because you are not stuck inside. Fifth grader, Madison Haas stated, “I like indoor recess because I can talk with my friends.” However, she prefers outdoor recess in the spring because of the many different activities like soccer, basketball, and playing on the playground. What is your favorite thing to do at recess? Finally, I spoke with Addison Putnam who said, “I like indoor recess in the winter because it’s warm inside. Plus you can’t go into the snow during outdoor recess, so what’s the point?” As for spring, she likes going outside and running through the flowers. My opinion on outdoor recess is that I prefer it in the spring and fall. I would rather have indoor recess in the winter. Overall, it looks like most people prefer outdoor recess in the warm weather and indoor recess when it’s cold. C r ay f i s h b y M ac ke nz i e va l l e s There has been some talk about these new creatures that have been introduced to Jerry Ross Elementary. They are called crayfish. Who studies them you ask? Well, I can answer that! All of the fourth graders. Crayfish are so much fun. Personally, my favorite parts were taking them to our tables and playing/observing them. I bet that was some other fourth graders favorite part too. The only thing I didn't like about the crayfish was that when you go to pick them up some of them will snap at you with Swamp Crayfish (which is what we used), experience for my students.
