Detlev, Adrian, Kirsten and Endric Daues “Many thanks to all the guests for attending my birthday party. You made this party a wonderful, unforgettable experience for me.” БЛАГОДАРЮ SHUKRIA GRAZIE THANK YOU C O N V E N T I O N W E E K The World Is Coming Together in Sehnde Sehnde, January 2012. Diverse cultures come together when V-LINE international managers meet up yet they are not strangers, but rather form an international team that works closely together and has great results to celebrate. The V-LINE Group used the annual Convention Week to synchronise offices from every continent with head office. The training focussed on management at the international level and further development of mid-level managers. Convention Week was a particularly big event this year as it took place in the context of the 60th birthday of V-LINE Managing Director Detlev Daues. Ahmed Al Gatai, Fa. Al-Rajhi Holding Company and seminar participants As a globally structured company V-LINE has been successfully absorbing cultural differences and mastering the challenge of national differences for 33 years. The mindset this requires is actively promoted. The 46 participants from twelve nations maintained an intensive exchange through meetings, seminars and workshops for a whole week. Manager or Leader? Keynote speaker Ahmed A. Al Gatai, Chief of Shared Services at Al-Rajhi Holding Company, Saudi Arabia, spoke about “Leadership and Organisational Culture”. He shared his know-how of Arabic business people and talked about the difference between a manager and a leader. It is important to have the tools for realisation in addition to clear visions. Revuru Madhu and Mohamed Sameer, Hofincons Group, Oman, presented the applications of their software and services for virtual catalogue management and strategic procurement. In addition to exciting lectures and other specialist input, the experiment by intercultural trainers Susanne Dranaz and Gary Thomas from Assist International HR, Bielefeld, really stayed in all the participants’ minds after two intensive workshop days. They illustrated empathy between the cultures through games and simply applied different rules for each group. Everyone who changed places quickly learnt to feel different and how to develop solutions at the same time. Training in intercultural cooperation and awareness for everyday life. Ultimately, the week delivered an inspirational boost of motivation for all participants and the entire V-LINE team. An enormous success at the start of a new, successful year. Revuru Madhu, Fa. Hofincons, during his speech Gary Thomas und Susanne Dranaz, Fa. Assist International HR БЛАГОДАРЮ SHUKRIA GRAZIE THANK YOU Around the World in 60 Years! On Friday 13th January, Detlev Daues invited family, friends, partners and colleagues to celebrate his 60th birthday. Around 400 invited guests from twelve nations – incl. from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan, USA, China, Korea, Brazil, Mexico and the Netherlands – made their way to the Expowal in Hanover to celebrate the milestone. Detlev Daues thanked everyone who “has helped him over the years to keep doing things a little bit more right than wrong”. A special thank you went to his parents, whose presence he valued as a special gift. He also thanked his family and friends who had travelled from abroad, and expressed his gratitude to all V-LINERS who carry the V-LINE spirit all over the world. Former Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport Walter Hirche gave a toast. He described Detlev Daues as a “modern Sindbad”. His field of business encompasses the world – “with a focus on the Arabic world”. He stressed the significance of constructive cooperation between politics and business for the international success of German companies. Detlev Daues Klaus Menzel and Shahzad Haider, who together have accumulated more than 60 years of service, gave a particularly affectionate toast. They regaled the audience with anecdotes from Detlev Daues‘ business life; praised his commitment, energy and many talents, of which they showed some apt caricatures that they had commissioned. Walter Hirche former Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport Hermann and Ingeborg Daues Klaus Menzel and Shahzad Haider Kaleem Butt Abdulaziz Al-Mohammed and Revuru Madhu Shahzad und Naheed Haider Belly Dancer Lobelia Friend and companion Kaleem Butt had a special gift up his sleeve: a belly dancing show with three dancers who wowed the international audience. Olaf and Christa Daues DZIEKUJE Sabine Müller-Walthe, Dr. Volker Müller GRACIAS Belly Dancer Ghazala SHUKRIYA БЛАГОДА Detlev Daues‘ son Endric related some statistics about his father. He confidently presented his father’s life in figures to the amused guests: his total consumption of Fishermen’s Friends and accumulated air miles both seemed to impress. According to the figures, Detlev Daues has spent twelve of his 60 years travelling ! Endric Daues Ilka Wasmuth and Simone Reinhold The V-LINE workforce surprised their boss with a documentary film. What actually happens in the company when the boss is away on one of his business trips? It had long been suspected: the employees play football in the atrium, the lounge gets turned into a disco, the finance managers literally chuck money out of the window, and the „managerless managers“ meet for poker in the clueless Mr Daues‘ empty office. His enthusiastic comment: “If that’s the case then I’ll give up my job and stay with you in the future …”. Walter and Monika Hirche Detlev and Kirsten Daues The catering reflected the occasion of “Around the World in 60 Years” with international recipes. Guests were taken on a culinary trip around the globe with delicacies like rib-eye from the USA, Arabian lamb stew with dried fruit, Asian chicken satay and veal cutlets in truffle cream. Lutz Krajenski with his Big Band provided a wonderful musical accompaniment to the evening and the dancing continued into the early hours. Lorenz Passoter, Alexandra Daues, Catharina Daues Sajjad Akram, Kaleem Butt, Ahsan Kaleem Butt Detlev Daues would like to express his heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped to make this celebration an unforgettable event: “All the guests with their good wishes, wonderful gifts and unusual contributions – many thanks!” He is especially thrilled with the generous donations on the occasion of his birthday: more than 11,000 euros have been given to Gegenwind e.V. and the Robert-Enke-Stiftung.
