Viewer Magazine July 2014 On the Cover FREEDOM SUMMER: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE During the summer of 1964, the nation’s eyes were riveted on Mississippi. Over 10 memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in an historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools, and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention in Atlantic City. The campaign was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of 35 churches and the bombing of 70 homes and Freedom Houses. Bush, NASA Space Shuttle Commander Story Musgrave, Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Allan “Bud” Selig, former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley, Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, former MLB pitcher Mike Mussina, Cincinnati Reds player Todd Frazier, and MLB’s official historian, John Thorn. LITTLE LEAGUE: A HISTORY also includes interviews with the family members of Little League founder Carl Stotz; Carolyn King, whose 1973 lawsuit against Little League contributed to the league’s landmark policy reversal of prohibiting girls from playing Little League Baseball; Kathryn “Tubby” Johnston Massar (the first girl to ever play Little League); and the three surviving members of the original Little League team formed in 1939. Discovered in 1989, sprites have eluded capture because they flicker into existence for a mere split-second — 40 times faster than an eye blink. NOVA rides with scientists in a high-flying weather observation plane as they hunt for sprites and finally succeed in snaring them in 3D video, gaining vital clues to unravel their mystery. NOVA also combines advanced video technology with stunning sequences shot from the International Space Station.
