FREEDOM SUMMER: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
During the summer of 1964, the nation’s eyes
were riveted on Mississippi. Over 10 memorable
weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than
700 student volunteers joined with organizers
and local African Americans in an historic effort
to shatter the foundations of white supremacy
in the nation’s most segregated state. Working
together, they canvassed for voter registration,
created Freedom Schools, and established the
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, with
the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national
convention in Atlantic City. The campaign was marked by sustained and deadly
violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless
beatings, the burning of 35 churches and the bombing of 70 homes and Freedom
Houses.

LITTLE LEAGUE: A HISTORY
Narrated by legendary baseball
broadcaster Vin Scully, Little League: A
History traces the 75-year history of the
world’s largest organized youth sports
program, from its humble beginnings
in Williamsport, Penn. to its current
status as a worldwide phenomenon.
Past and present Little League players,
administrators, coaches, umpires,
and others reflect on the role Little
League played on their lives. Notable
interviewees include: President George W. Bush, NASA Space Shuttle Commander
Story Musgrave, Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Allan “Bud” Selig,
former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley, Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd
McClendon, former MLB pitcher Mike Mussina, Cincinnati Reds player Todd Frazier,
and MLB’s official historian, John Thorn. LITTLE LEAGUE: A HISTORY also includes
interviews with the family members of Little League founder Carl Stotz; Carolyn King,
whose 1973 lawsuit against Little League contributed to the league’s landmark policy
reversal of prohibiting girls from playing Little League Baseball; Kathryn “Tubby”
Johnston Massar (the first girl to ever play Little League); and the three surviving
members of the original Little League team formed in 1939.

NOVA: AT THE EDGE OF SPACE
Between the blue sky above us and the
infinite blackness of space lies a frontier
full of enigmas that scientists have only
just begun to investigate. “At the Edge of
Space” takes viewers on a spectacular
exploration to probe the earth-space
boundary zone, home to some of
nature’s most puzzling and alluring
phenomena: the shimmering aurora,
streaking meteors, and fleeting flashes
that shoot upwards from thunderclouds,
known as sprites. Discovered in 1989,
sprites have eluded capture because
they flicker into existence for a mere split-second — 40 times faster than an eye
blink. NOVA rides with scientists in a high-flying weather observation plane as they
hunt for sprites and finally succeed in snaring them in 3D video, gaining vital clues to
unravel their mystery. NOVA also combines advanced video technology with stunning
sequences shot from the International Space Station.

A distinguished group of seven
Californians, including actor Warren
Beatty and San Francisco 49ers
quarterback Joe Montana, is being
honored as part of an hour-long broadcast
of the 7th Annual California Hall of Fame
Presentation at the California Museum in
Sacramento. The broadcast captures the

California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr.
Dina Eastwood is the mistress of
ceremonies for the evening’s festivities.
She welcomes honorees and guests with in
depth and personal “Red Carpet”
interviews
preceding the introductions and awards at
the ceremonies which follow.
In addition to actor, producer, writer, and director Warren Beatty and NFL Hall of Fame
quarterback Joe Montana, honorees being
inducted into the California Hall of Fame in
this broadcast include scientist of transdisciplinary systems, Gregory Bateson,
visionary designers Charles and Ray Eames,
labor activist Dolores Huerta, celebrated
native Californian Ishi, and
