On the Cover Composers contribute a creative component to virtually everything we watch, yet most audiences know little about them or what inspires composers to do what they do. They win Grammys‰, Oscars‰ and Emmys‰ for their film and TV scores. Did you know that may of today's working music composers have roots in Rock 'N' Roll? PAGE 1 / KLCS VIEWER MAGAZINE / JULY 2015 KLCS' COMPOSERS ON COMPOSING is a half-hour documentary series that looks into the fascinating world of rock artists who are creating the musical scores for todays most popular TV programs and movies. COMPOSERS ON COMPOSING is shot on location on the composer's home turf: the recording studio. In the first episode, we'll meet composer Steve Porcaro who, while scoring the critically-acclaimed FX series Justified, still performs as a member of the iconic rock band Toto. Airs Wednesday July 1 st at 8PM Tuesday July 7 th at 7:30 PM Saturday July 11 th at 9 PM The second episode features Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, formerly part of Prince and the Revolution, and now sought-after film and Emmy‰ award-winning television composers. Airs Wednesday July 1 st at 8:30 PM Tuesday July 7 th at 7PM Saturday July 11 th at 9:30 PM These two pilot episodes delve into the composers' creative processes, highlighting their onstage careers and revealing what led them off stage to become composers. Film clips, photos and music accompany these compelling and candid one-on-one interviews with host and producer Bambi Moé. SUPPORT · DONATE · SPONSOR · WWW.KLCS.ORG History/Biography/Documentary HIDDEN LEGACY: JAPANESE TRADITIONAL PERFORMING ARTS IN THE WORLD WAR II INTERNMENT CAMPS Using historical footage and interviews from artists who were interned, this film tells the story of how traditional Japanese cultural arts were maintained at a time when the War Relocation Authority (WRA) emphasized the importance of assimilation and Americanization. Various essays and studies concerning the camps have been published, but have focused on the political and legal aspects of the internment, while hardly mentioning cultural and recreational activities in the camps. When cultural and recreational activities have been documented, they have focused on American culture, such as baseball and swing music. This film will be the first major presentation of the existence of traditional music, dance and drama in the camps. It includes stories of 19 artists in the fields of music (koto, nagauta shamisen, shakuhachi, shigin, biwa), dance (buyo, obon) and drama (kabuki) who were interned at Tule Lake, Manzanar, Amache/Granada, Rohwer, Gila River, and Topaz. Many are bird brains. Meet a cockatoo with a talent for picking locks; a wild crow on a mission to solve an eight-step puzzle; and a tame raven who can solve a puzzle box so quickly that his performance has to be captured with high-speed photography. Are these skills really evidence of high intelligence or just parlor tricks, the result of training and instinct? To find out, NOVA tests the limits of some of the planet’s brainiest animals, searching for the secrets of a problem-solving mind. PAGE 3 / KLCS VIEWER MAGAZINE / JULY 2015 Airs Sunday, July 12th at 6PM and Tuesday, July 14th at 7PM Arts/Lifestyle/Family WILD KRATTS: BACK IN CREATURE TIME The Wild Kratts crew lament the extinction of different animals in recent history and how they'll never ever be able to see them. Science Concept: Extinction - different types of animals can go extinct and disappear from the planet in a number of ways - habitat loss, overhunting, etc. Once an animal goes extinct, it is lost forever.
