Paris. July, 1942. The massive roundup of Jews by the Nazis has just occurred.
Thirteen thousand men, women, and children have been arrested and are being sent
to Auschwitz. A young Jewish woman, pregnant with her first child, is admitted to
the maternity hospital even before her labor begins. Her obstetrician hopes that
hospitalization will protect her and the unborn baby from the roundups. Because of his
actions, the young woman is not at home when the Nazis arrive to arrest her mother
and two brothers. They will be sent to Auschwitz by the end of the month. Her husband
is in a French prison in Lyon, arrested six months earlier while trying to find a safe place
for him and his wife to hide in the Free Zone. When he left, he did not know she was
pregnant. Her life and that of her new baby are in grave danger. Their only hope is to
escape to the south, to the so-called Free Zone, where they might find someplace to
hide. She must undertake this dangerous journey completely alone.
This documentary film features interviews with the woman who was the baby on that
perilous journey 70 years ago. It also features footage and narration of the Nazis
occupation of France during WW II. This is a story of great courage, the kindness of
strangers, and luck. Over and over, their world changed with A Knock at the Door.

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR
TREBLINKA'S LAST WITNESS
Samuel Willenberg, now 92 years old, is the last living survivor of the Treblinka death
camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, where an estimated 900,000 Jews were murdered
in a 13-month period at the height of World War II. Still haunted 70 years later by the
horrors he witnessed as a young forced laborer, Samuel has immortalized his harrowing experiences in a series of bronze sculptures of the tragic victims who dwell indelibly in his memory like ghosts. In Treblinka’s Last Witness, the sculptures, together
with archival footage and photographs from the period, illustrate Samuel's riveting
narrative, telling a singularly powerful and personal story of the annihilation of Polish
Jewry in the death camps built by the Germans to carry out Hitler's infamous "Final
Solution." As a prisoner at Treblinka, he witnessed the death of his two beloved sisters, Itta and Tamara in the gas chambers, among countless others. In his sculptures,
the most poignant of these individual tragedies are brought back to life. Treblinka’s
Last Witness focuses on one man's personal odyssey to reflect the enormity of the
genocide inflicted upon Poland's 3.5 million Jews, at the time the world's largest
Jewish community, and seven times greater than the Jewish population of pre-war
Germany. Samuel Willenberg's story is one of survival against staggering odds and
though heart-rending and horrifying, it is ultimately one of triumph.

CHANGING SEASON: ON THE MASUMOTO
FAMILY FARM
"How many harvests do you have in you?" is the perennial echo that reverberates
across the Masumoto Family peach farm. This film chronicles a transitional year-inthe-life of famed farmer, slow food advocate, and sansei, David "Mas" Masumoto,
and his compelling relationship with daughter Nikiko, who returns to the family farm
with the intention of stepping into her father's work boots. Mas' hopes and hesitations for the future are shored up with his daughter's return, as the family must
navigate the implications of Mas' 60th birthday and triple bypass surgery. The film is
interspliced with moments of Nikiko's razor sharp meditations on her family's internment during WWII and her role as a queer, progressive farmer in the Central Valley.

interviews with the woman who was
the baby on that perilous journey 70
years ago. It also features footage and
narration of the Nazis occupation of
France during WW II. This is a story
of great courage, the kindness of
strangers, and luck. Over and over,
their world changed with A Knock at
the Door.
