Volume 40 April 2, 2014 April is Rotary’s Magazine Month The President Speaks Dear fellow Rotarians of RCBS, Greetings from Sri Lanka! I missed all of you last week!! Last week was the first Rotary meeting I have missed since the start of the Rotary year. But it was for a good cause and I am very happy to have been the Lead Club in Organising the Dhanvanthri Leg for Legless Project in Sri Lanka. Last week in my message, I gave a brief explanation about the journey and preparation that led to the trip. This week I will pen a few thoughts on social part of the trip. The project aspect of the trip I will leave for next week, when we host the joint meeting between the 3 organising clubs and we welcome the Sri Lankan High Commissioner as a guest of our Club. Firstly, the Organising Chair, PP Magandran was simply brilliant in his untiring efforts to put this trip together. The delegates were treated to VIP treatment the entire journey. We did not have to pass through immigration at all as we were welcomed from the flight and whisked away to the VIP lounge where our passports were collected and everything cleared for us including luggage, while we sipped on tea in the comfort of the lounge. When Sharon, Susan and I decided to attend mass on Sunday in Jaffna, we thought we would skip the group tour and find our way to church… but when Mag heard about our plans, he organised a van complete with 3 army personnel to escort us. It was an interesting experience….. more interesting was that the mass was completely in Tamil! Nevertheless, we completed the mass. When the group felt that it was too tiring to use the road for a 8-10 hour journey back to Colombo, PP Mag organised a military flight to take us to Colombo ! During our trip, we were hosted to lunch by Major General Lalith at his home in Kandy where we were treated to a 7 piece band and excellent food, not to mention free flow of spirits. In Jaffna, once again we were hosted by Major General Udaya Perera to a dinner which started with 2 hour cocktails while we were entertained by a band as well as a dance troupe. This was followed by a sit down course meal where there were probably more waiters to serve than guests! General Udaya was formerly the Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia and during his stay here, he had been a speaker at our Club meeting. So it was good to catch up with him. After dinner, our ladies thanked them by dancing to Achy Breaky Heart. When we landed in Colombo, we stayed at the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel and we were greeted by our ex-Rotarian Denis Gruhier. He was a member of our Club when he was the General Manager of the Sunway Resort Hotel and he now runs the Cinnamon hotels in Colombo. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to my room to see a personalised letter granting me access to the Club lounge for free cocktails, port and cheese and free massage! There was also a bottle of complimentary wine in my room…. It is really sad that it is lent and I had to skip the spirits ! We had 3 international intercity meetings. These were at Kandy, Jaffna and Colombo. It was an exciting experience for me as it is my first international visit as President. Thanks to PP Mag , who at every opportunity kept announcing “ I would like my President to say a few words ….” ,somewhere along the trip I gave up on my usually pre-prepared scripts and just made speeches off the cuff! A special mention of our Rotarians from our Club who were on the trip - Rtn Paul, Rtn Sharon and PP Susan. They were exceptional travelling companions …. We had lots of laughter therapy on the journey. Before the trip, I had asked each of them to handle some reporting for the trip and they stepped right up, divided the work among themselves and got going ….. we kept having to remember to take the camera from Sharon , our self appointed photographer, so she would be in some photographs, and we were impressed by Susan’s ability to translate as she was seen religiously taking notes during the Tamil speeches and we got used to Paul being the tour guide who kept the group updated with pertinent facts that we needed to know, like what time to be back on the bus. ...contd The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway Vol 40/ 2013-14 April 2, 2014 April is Rotary’s Magazine Month The President Speaks..contd We met President Jaliya and the Rotarians from our sister club , the Rotary Club of Capital City. We met at the camp in Mullaitivu and somehow we clicked. When Sharon mentioned that in the hot sun she was thinking of having a mojito, she woke up the next morning to find a delivery at her hotel room …. The Rotarians had brought her a bottle of rum, soda, some mint leaves and ice for her to make and enjoy mohitos during her stay in Jaffna! Needless to say , when we finally got to Colombo for the joint meeting, the fellowship lasted till 2 am. A special mention of Charter President of the Inner Wheel Club of Selangor, Thana (Who is PP Mag’s wife), she had a smile on the entire journey while having to deal with requests for detours for shopping and for specialty items like cinnamon, tea and cakes. Nearly all requests were accommodated. We got back from Sri Lanka on Friday and immediately got back into project mode as we attended the Literacy Project in Rumah Kasih on Saturday morning. The OC Paul with the assistance of Rtn Dinesh, did a great job of organising the session with the 17 girls at the home. Getting up close and personal with the children was a great experience, most of them already have good reading habits. This is the second home we are visiting during the Literacy month of March. But due to the overwhelming generosity of Rotarians, we have more books to give away and this project will continue in the next few months. On Sunday morning, the Rotarians were at the 9th session of the Kitchen bundle project handing out groceries to single mothers. A young teenager approached the OC Suresh, even though her mother was not part of the recipient list but she brought documents to show of her father’s passing (death certificate ) and her mother’s illness (cancer treatment at UH) and birth certificates for her and her sister. Due to her mother’s illness, there is no income for the family and they could really benefit from the monthly groceries. The OC will be looking into how we can help them. For those who have not attended any of the Kitchen Bundle sessions, it is not too late, there are 3 more months…. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness firsthand the work we are doing to improve the lives of those living in the vicinity of our community. I salute OC Suresh and the Rotarians who make the effort every month to carry the groceries and hand the out to the recipients. Today we will welcome the 10th lady member to our Club, Rtn Dr Viroshini. I am excited to have another lady member in our Club . We started with 4 and now have 10 ladies in our Club! Welcome Viro, I am certain your brand of wit and fast comebacks will contribute to much laughter in the Club, and of course we will certainly value your orthopaedic skills and medical background. Lastly, April is the magazine month. I must take this time to thank our Bulletin editor PP Movin for his untiring efforts in producing our Club’s weekly newsletter. (Sorry Movin, for my long message this week). PP Movin religiously churns out the newsletter, sometimes even when he is travelling. So make a special effort this month to recognise his efforts, by giving him a pat on the back. “Engage Rotary and Change Lives” Yours in Rotary Service President 2013/14 The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway Vol 40/ 2013-14 April 2, 2014 April is Rotary’s Magazine Month RC Bandar Sunway – Notes on the Regular Meeting Held at Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel, 7.46pm,March 26th, 2014 PRESENT APOLOGIES GUESTS PE Xavier. The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway Vol 40/ 2013-14 April 2, 2014 April is Rotary’s Magazine Month WATER PROJECT UNITES LEBANON CLUBS ACROSS ALL DIVIDES A project to provide clean water to all of Lebanon’s schools is uniting leaders from many of the country’s diverse religious, cultural, and political divisions. In 2011, Rotary members in northern Lebanon decided to install new tanks and water filters in a few nearby schools with the help of a Rotary Foundation grant. The idea caught on and a few other clubs followed suit. Two years later, District 2452 Governor Jamil Mouawad and other district leaders saw the potential of creating one giant water project that could reach every school and involve all 24 of the country’s Rotary clubs. They formed a committee to handle publicity and gather technical knowledge, while each club was asked to provide volunteers, contribute funds, apply for grants, and secure contributions from outside organizations. “Every student has the right to drink clean water. It goes without saying that clean drinking water leads to less diseases, healthier students, and consequently, better education,” says Mouawad. “The bigger the challenge, the greater its positive impact on humanity.” While clean water is the main objective, the leaders also saw the effort as a means of helping heal Lebanon’s long history of sectarian strife. A civil war divided the country from 1975 to 1990, leaving an estimated 120,000 people dead. In recent years, Lebanon’s government is a shifting coalition of religions, political parties, and sects. Lina Shehayeb, president of the Rotary Club of Aley, is a Druze by faith. Shehayeb says working alongside club members who are Catholic, Maronite, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, and Muslim to promote the project has deepened her understanding of those with different religious or political views. “We are building peace and understanding,” she says. “There has never been anything quite like this in our country.” Even the distribution of club responsibilities is designed to foster peace. Each club is responsible for a certain number of schools, some in their area but some in a totally separate region. The clubs nominate a project coordinator, find qualified suppliers, arrange for sponsors, and allocate contributions from sponsors, district funds, and global grants to finance the installation of filters in the schools. “For example a club from Jounieh, a Christian resort town north of Beirut, might be assigned schools in the southern mountains near the Israeli border, an area that is considerably poorer and primarily Shia Muslim,” explains Mouawad. “After all, who — no matter what their political or religious views — could argue with providing clean water for children?” The effort could not have come at a better time. With the crisis in Syria, Lebanon’s population is ballooning with refugees, including many school-age children. By improving the schools these kids attend, Rotary members are laying the groundwork for future peace in the region. According to the committee’s technical team, it will cost roughly $2,500 a school to install water tanks, filters, and provide ongoing monitoring. About 200 schools have been covered so far. The goal is to reach all 1,535 schools within three years. When you pick up a Rotary publication, whether it's Rotary Down Under in Australia and New Zealand, or The Rotary-No-Tomo in Japan, you'll find that every single one does just what it's meant to do: It informs, and it inspires. It keeps you up to date with Rotary news, brings you new ideas for your Rotary service, and tells stories that are relevant and meaningful to you. To me, these publications around the world are a tangible representation of Rotary's greatest strength: that each club is a local, community-based entity, engaged in a truly global network.
