Amen ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First : The development of opportunity for Service; acquaintance as an Second : High Ethical standards in business and professions; the Recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third : The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; Fourth : The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 AS TIME GOES BY You must, remember this, A kiss is still a kiss... A sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply As time goes by. And when two lovers woo, They still say I love you, On that you can rely. No matter what the future brings, As time goes by. Moonlight and love songs never out of date. Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate. Woman meets man and man must have his mate... That, no one can deny. It’s still the same old story, A fight for love and glory... A case of do or die. The world will always welcome lovers, As time goes by -o0o- ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman IP Ner, our birthday boy two days ago (he shares his birthday with PPA MaryAnne Colayco and the late PP Bing Basilio), was again showed to do the President’s message as BCP Ramy was out. Ramy knew he was going to be out as he did not have his regular President’s column. Ramy came in late last meeting only to catch up with the Pasig Zone’s marker’s unveiling where DG Marilou Co attended and our club adviser PDG Raffy also honored us by beating the hot summer. PVP Jerry, in a short notice produced our guest speaker last week. Former Senator Nene Pimentel have many friends in the club and IPP Ducky was tasked to introduce him. They belong to a mutual admiration club as both did well in the term of the late Pres Cory. PP Topax is seldom tasked to do the fining. But he has a unique way of the fine art of fining that he can blend this with laughter. We had two PDGs as visiting Rotarians, Jimmy Cura and Benny Ricafort. They both wanted to hear the new nationalistic project of Sen. Nene, Youth Transformers. This should get our support either from our High School scholars, and, our Rotaractors. If we will have the Binays stay longer and with more family members in our field of government, it was Nene who started this when he named VP Jojo as OIC Mayor of Makati, 1986. It was nice to see PPs Tito H. and Sonny last meeting. They looked very much okay and Tito even had a companion that I thought he was to sponsor to our club. PVP Louie O. could not attend as he and family went on a cruise. This week, he should be around the tour was for two weeks only. He needs the break as all members of the clinic cannot find time to relax during clinic days. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman Continuation 1. The earnings of former Pasig Rotarian in the School of Nursing of the University of Makati is no joke. The tie up is with the STI group of Eusebio Tanco. Surprisingly, it was their first venture into nursing being a computer school. But the earnings is so much that in a given year their profit sharings run into several million pesos. Anyway former Rotarian Jack did not stay long enough in our club. PPA Belle was not interested to hear Sen Nene. She was just checking if indeed PP and Hall of Famer Rhett was in our meeting. He was enjoying the meeting when he saw Belle coming in. He continued his enjoyment though. I could not help, but for the record indeed, remind through the open forum that we have had former members as Jimmy Pestano and Dr. Jack Arroyo. The latter was sent an invitation to attend the next Senate hearing about the College of Nursing of the University of Makati. Jimmy was sponsored by the late PP Bing Basilio. His nephew Philip died a controversial death that despite decades, nothing final has been established. Speaking about death, when IP Ner asked me what’s the latest, I told him my friend Chito Bernardo died. He claimed he was also a friend of his. I told him he was the youngest of the three Chito Bernardos that I personally know. The Chito who died was the priest with charismatic nature, just like our very own. Namesake lang of ours, and, ours will stay longer because of the gift of laughter. A breakfast meeting? A fellowship? Can we go back to the buddy system for attendance? This is the bane of most clubs. And, to think we have regular quality guest speakers. Personally, even once a month breakfast meeting will not solve the attendance problem. It will break some routines though. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra ECUADOREAN HEART SURGEON DONATES PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TO CHILDREN IN NEED HIS Pediatric heart surgeon Gerardo Davalos has treated scores of young heart patients, but one made a particular impression on him. The day before 11-year-old Josue Ochoa died in 2013, Dr. Davalos, a member of the Rotary Club of Quito, Ecuador, walked into the boy's hospital room to say goodbye. The atmosphere in the room, where family members were gathered, was somber. But one person was smiling and comforting everyone else. It was Josue. Says Davalos: "I'll never forget how strong Josue was in that moment. He wasn't concerned about himself. He was more worried about his mom and dad. He kept telling them that everything was going to be OK and that he'd lived a great life. He was an amazing child." And Josue also shared his gratitude with Davalos. "He told me, 'Thank you for giving me a chance to dance at school'", the surgeon recalls. Five years earlier, funded by a Rotary Foundation grant that paid for corrective heart surgeries for underprivileged children at Quito's Hospital Metropolitano, Davalos had performed a complicated operation that saved Josue's life. The ensuing recovery period had been extremely hard for the youngster, who'd had to remain in the hospital for two months after the surgery. But "Josue never complained once; he always had a smile on his face," says Davalos. "He couldn't wait to get out of the hospital and dance." ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 1. Over the years, though, Josue's heart problems became irreversible, says Davalos. "But Rotary helped extend his life, and gave him a chance to enjoy things that normal children his age do." Josue is one of more than 120 children on whom Davalos has performed free corrective heart surgeries since his club, along with the Rotary Club of Wheeling, Illinois, USA, initiated the grant project in 2002. Connecting with Rotary After spending five years in Spain for his medical residency, Davalos returned home in 1995 eager to make a difference in the lives of Ecuador's underprivileged children, and looking to use his surgical skills outside his regular duties as a hospital doctor. "I was a young surgeon with a skill I wanted to share," he recalls. "There are so many needs in Ecuador -- the government can't afford to pay for heart surgeries for poor children. There are very few options out there for them. I wanted to find a way to provide free surgeries to those in need." A friend of Davalos' who was a member of the Quito club thought Rotary could be the answer. After attending a few meetings, Davalos joined the club in 1998. "I was very impressed with the variety of professional skills the Rotarians had. I didn't know how to start a project or find connections that I needed to reach these desperate children. Rotarians do," says Davalos, who is director of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Hospital Metropolitano, Quito's leading hospital. "The club gave me options and the support I needed. Their enthusiasm to help those less fortunate was as strong as mine." ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 14, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 2. Rallying behind Davalos' vision, a number of clubs worked together to obtain grant money, which funded more than 60 surgeries. "Life can be kind to some people and unkind to others. Those of us who are lucky to be in the position to give back must try to do so," he says. "I'm lucky to have found Rotary, lucky to have found friends so willing to help change lives." Davalos, who also implants cardiac pacemakers free of charge through the Pacemaker Bank Foundation, adds: "I'm grateful that I can share my gift and make a difference. But those children are more of a gift to me than I can ever be to them." None more so than Josue.
