Currently developing model to show energy and $ savings with LEED EB • GC assists in all steps of the process, from implementation to documentation LEED EB at UCSB • Res Halls compete to lower energy usage against historical average • iPods raffled to winning halls each quarter, purchased with energy savings • All res halls competed (over 5500 students) Energy Conservation Competition – Over $10000 saved in 2005-6 academic year – 25 iPods given out – $5000 earmarked for conservation projects • The results: Energy Conservation Competition • Handed out 800 CFLs in res halls in exchange for incandescents • Promotion for Energy Competition • $4500 saved in one year of average use in dorms Light bulb Exchange • High-traffic tour dorm room for visiting families and perspective students • Retrofitted with all ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances • Signage and brochures to encourage environmentally preferable purchasing This model uses ‘not much’ kWh per year Green Tour Dorm Room • Leadership in environmental stewardship and ethics • Market shifts towards more greenhouse gas-efficient products and services • UC purchasing power The Importance of UC Procurement • • • • Students group studies projects Interdisciplinary effort Tangible change Partnership with guest lecturers, faculty, administration, and community members Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) • Fall 2005 – UC Environmentally and Socially Preferred Purchasing: led by Green Campus intern Ashleigh Talberth • Fall 2004 – Scott Mackenzie, “Green Purchasing Project” ESLP Purchasing Projects !
