Steiff is the world’s premier manufacturer of high-end toys and collectibles. The
company is perhaps best known for being the inventor of the teddy bear in 1902,
but its history starts well before that.
In 1880, a German clothing business owner named Margarete Steiff sewed a little
elephant that was intended to be a pin cushion. The elephant quickly caught on as
a children’s toy, and within 12 years she had expanded the line to include many
other animals.
In 1902, Margarete’s nephew, Richard, designed the world’s first stuffed toy bear with moveable
arms and legs. Although Margarete was skeptical, she allowed Richard to exhibit the bear at the
Leipzig toy trade fair, where an American trader discovered them and ordered 3,000 of them. The
bears became extremely popular in the United States, where they were known as teddy bears,
named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.
It is easy to spot an authentic Steiff product at a glance, since every Steiff animal features an ear
tag designating it as a Steiff product. Yellow tags with red writing can be found on the majority
of Steiff products. Margarete Steiff's guiding principle was, "For children, only the best is good
