Self-Guided Bike Tour
A. Imperial Beach Lifeguard Station (Surfing Museum inside)
Get your first dose of Imperial Beach’s laid back surfer charm with a visit to the Surf
Museum. Interactive displays in the Station show the evolution of the surfboard.
B. Portwood Pier Plaza & Farmers Market
Stunning vistas, shopping, farmers market, picnic areas, street vendors, and bike trails
dot this popular community space. Make sure to see Surfhenge, the famous abstract
surfboard sculpture standing at the plaza’s entrance.
C. Imperial Beach Pier

At 1,491 feet long, the Imperial Beach pier is the West Coast’s southernmost pier. A
local favorite, the pier features stunning sunsets and views of the Los Coronados Islands.

D. Outdoor Surf Museum
With its large waves, Imperial Beach is known far and wide as a surfer’s paradise.
The outdoor Surfboard Museum honors surfboard shapers for their innovations in
advancing the sport. Features surfboards from antiquity to 1985.

This beachfront park displays a prominent sculpture by renowned marine artist
Wyland. Dunes Park also features picnic amenities, volleyball, and a playground.

F. Spirit of Imperial Beach

Sculpted in bronze by artist A. Wasil, the Spirit of Imperial Beach is forged with a dual
theme of sand castles and surfing–local activities celebrated with yearly competitions.
G. San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex
These protected habitats were established for endangered coastal marsh birds, but
now protect a diverse range of habitats. Coastal marshes, sage scrub, chaparral, and
woodland areas are important breeding and nesting grounds for rare birds.
H. Coronado Cays & Grand Caribe Shoreline Park
Located on the south end of the island, the Coronado Cays estates are the most
exclusive on Coronado. Grand Caribe Shoreline Park includes trails with informative
panels identifying plants in this diverse ecosystem.
I. Silver Strand State Beach
This beach’s name is derived from scores of half-buried silvery oyster shells dotting
this popular recreational site. Known affectionately by locals as “The Strand”, visitors
spend their time here digging up clams and playing in the sun, surf and sand.

J. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado
The Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is the Navy’s West Coast headquarters for training
and operations and home to groups of the elite Navy SEALs team.
K. Glorietta Bay

This small park features stunning views of Glorietta Bay and Coronado Bridge. With a
protected location and calm waters, it’s a great place to take an ocean dip!
L. Coronado Playhouse
Founded in February 1946, the Coronado Playhouse has the distinction of being the
oldest community theatre in San Diego County. Classic plays, modern works, musicals,
and more are proudly acted out at this historic community theatre.
M. Hotel Del Coronado
A favorite with celebrities, world leaders, and the wealthy, the Hotel Del Coronado is a
celebrity in its own right. Perhaps the hotel’s most famous role was in the movie Some
Like it Hot, featuring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis.
N. Coronado Yacht Club
Founded in 1932, the Coronado Yacht Club’s membership hosts sailing events and are
well known for their large regattas.

Turn left on Seacoast Dr.

Turn right on Palm Ave.

Turn left on 7th Street. Proceed with caution through the 7th St. &
Highway 75 intersection. Continue on 7th St. until it ends.

Turn left onto the Bayshore Bikeway (Silver Strand Bikeway).
Note: on return route, be sure to take the first right back to 7th St. (across
from Wildlife Refuge), exiting Bayshore Bikeway.

Once you reach Coronado Island, continue on the Bayshore Bikeway
along Pomona Ave., staying to the right to remain on Bikeway.

At the Coronado Island Yacht Club park area with the yacht statue on your
right, turn around and return to Wheel Fun Rentals.
