Animals
Matter
Welcome
Hello and a warm welcome to the summer edition of
Animals Matter.
As I write the weather has finally turned to something that resembles
a proper Spring, and so our thoughts are turning, as they always do at
this time of year, to keeping our four-legged friends safe in the sun.
At our centres we have plenty of ideas to help the animals cope with
the changing temperatures – paddling pools for our dogs is just one! –
please call us or visit us at www.woodgreen.org.uk/pet-advice for advice
on keeping your pet safe and happy in warmer weather. It’s also that
time when you might be planning a summer getaway – Helen Currie
wouldn’t dream of going away without her dog Misty, and offers advice
on page 10 for anyone who’s hoping to do the same this year.
We always enjoy receiving your photos and news of what your pets have
been up to, and now we’re offering one lucky reader the chance to see
their pet appear on the cover of our next issue – please turn to page 15
for details of how to enter our photography competition!
You will also notice as you look through the magazine that our Christmas
cards are now available – yes, it may seem a long way off but we’re
already half way through the year! – all profits from the sale of cards will
go towards the animals in our care.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your
generous support, without it we simply wouldn’t be able to keep our
doors open. Please do come and visit us if you can, so you can see
first-hand the difference your contribution makes.
Best wishes,
Gill Blatch

A Hero’s
Tail...
Over the last year Wood Green has been helping the
South Wales Police to improve the welfare of their police
dogs and horses. As well as giving advice on ways to enrich
each animal’s life, Wood Green and South Wales Police are
launching a campaign to build new kennels for their canine
partners in the Dog and Mounted Section.
The culmination of the campaign is the
publication, in September, of a book

Why

It is so easy to acquire a new pet
nowadays and we are often
asked why people would
want to go through the
process of adoption –
Wood Green’s Head of Training

rescue dogs are best and talks about the Charity’s rehoming process.

animals to REAL people.
At Wood Green, The Animals Charity our staff are trained to
find homes for dogs that meet their basic needs plus a little
more. We realised a long time ago that there aren’t enough
homes out there with acres of land, live in trainers, owners that
are home all day, owners that don’t have any young children
or owners that are really looking forward to rehabilitating a
troubled rescue dog. We have a real duty of care to the previous
owners of the dogs that are entrusted to us. Many of them have
handed their treasured pets to us so that we can ensure their
safety for the rest of their lives. We take this responsibility very
seriously and in no way would we consider placing the dogs in
our care into homes that cannot provide for their basic needs
both financially and emotionally.
There are many different options available to people who
are looking to get a new dog or puppy: there are breeders,
newspapers, shop windows and now the internet. There is an
ever growing number of websites that encourage the sale and
purchase of pets online. If you are a genuine responsible owner
ask yourself why you might prefer these options. A reputable
animal charity such as Wood Green wants to protect potential
new owners as much as the animals in their care when it
comes to finding good homes.
With this in mind we (along with other charities) ensure that all
our animals undergo a thorough medical examination, they are
all vaccinated and provided with treatment for worms and fleas,

Volunteer Photographer
I first started working as a volunteer
photographer and videographer at
Wood Green’s Godmanchester Centre
in September 2012. I have always
had a soft spot for animals and my
developing interest in photography makes
the role an ideal fit. Initially I started with
very little knowledge of how to produce
a film, but with a little research soon
got the hang of it.
08:00
Sundays are Wood Green Days. We usually get up
around 8am, and start the day with a cup of tea and
some breakfast.
10:00
It’s easy to see how dogs understand routine; as I say
good bye to my girlfriend our trusty lab Buddy sits at
the door with big brown eyes that say “Where are the
Schmackos?” He knows the packet is always kept in
the boot of the car, so when loading up the camera
gear, he’s on patrol until he gets one!
The drive to Wood Green always involves the
regular stop for coffee, like our lab I have a routine...

finding them new home
10:30
Arriving at Wood Green, I always see how many cars are in the
car park. This gives me an idea of how busy the site will be.
Then it’s off to the dog section to sign in and locate the list for
today’s film and photos.
Next stop is to locate the dogs along with a volunteer to walk
them; in the beginning this was a great way to clear a room!
Today and over the months of working here, the staff have really
got to grips with starring in the clips. Regular walkers (referred to
as “The Legs” since that’s all that’s usually seen!) have helped to
make the work easier by getting used to the format and what’s
required when taking pictures.
14:00
11:00
The filming takes place around the Godmanchester site in
It’s great to see the reaction of the dogs as they
get excited for a walk; most are oblivious to
the camera, some inquisitive, some blatantly
pose for it, with an occasional one being
camera shy. It’s like being paparazzi for
the animal world!
We try to keep to a similar format
with all the film clips; going on
walks, doing tricks and playing
in the garden, although some
dogs don’t want to play,
standing with a “You threw it,
you get it!” look in their eyes.
various areas, but we can usually be found around the lake
area as this make a great background for the photos, along
with the more peaceful garden of remembrance when the site
is busy, which helps the timid dogs to relax for the photos.
I usually aim to film around 8-10 minutes of film, which allows
for a good selection when editing, along with 4-5 various
photos. Schmackos are the key here, along with a squeaker
from an old dog chew! (Thank you Buddy)
15:30
Upon arrival at home, our trusty Buddy performs his search and
stop routine, consisting of “Where have you been, who with and
where are the Schmackos” nudge to the pockets! I usually manage

afternoon, this usually results in
around 4-6 dogs per weekend. High
priority or long termers are filmed first
as promoting them in this way can really
help in finding them new homes.
20:00
Downloading the afternoon’s photos and film clips are a job for
the evening, with a quick sort out of the photos for clarity and
composition. Small tweaks are made to ensure the picture looks
its best. Depending on home life and how busy I am with my

Dory is a lovely older lady looking for a
quiet retirement home where she can be
the only pet, although she does enjoy
meeting doggy friends out on walks.
Chockie is looking for a home with her friend
Scruffy; they are an affectionate pair of dogs
who love being together, and would be
happy to share their home with another dog.
Drake is a handsome, chunky chap who
could do with losing a little weight, he is
very friendly and sociable but could do
with learning some basic manners!
Sunny 6977 (Godmanchester)
Sunny is an independent girl who enjoys a
fuss on her own terms, she has been a little
unsettled recently and will need a patient
owner who will give her the time to adapt
to a new home.
Flopsy 3164 (Godmanchester)
Skits 7360 (Heydon)
Princess 8955 (London)
This sassy, independent lady is Skits! Her
favourite things are snoozing and food,

Princess can be a little shy at first but
staff feel once she gets to know you she
will come out of her shell and be a
loving girl.
Panda 7582 (Heydon)
Percy 9141 (Heydon)
Flopsy has recently found love with Katie
and they are now looking for a home
together where they have lots of space to

with the odd fresh egg or two!
Bandit is looking for a home with his fellow
pygmy goat friend Rascal – Bandit is the more
nervous of the two while Rascal will happily
come and take a treat from your hand.
Percy is a shy boy who is now looking for
a fresh start in life, in a new home with
a neutered female bunny to keep him
company and help him build his confidence.
