Collection
This collection of historic photographic
equipment can be traced back through Ansel
Adams and three generations of the Morgan
Ansel Adams
(1902 - 1984)
1942, Adam’s work and reputation developed and he focused on
detailed close-ups as well as large scale images. He spent time in
New Mexico with other artists and began to publish essays and
instructional books on photography.
Willard D. Morgan
(1900 - 1967)
By the 1960s, appreciation of photography as an art form had
expanded to the point at which Adam’s images were shown in
large galleries and museums. In 1974, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art in New York hosted a retrospective exhibit. Adams spent
much of the 1970s printing negatives in order to satisfy demand
for his classic works.
During his career, he utilized many assistants to help on location,
spot and print in the darkroom and to assist running his workshops.
Liliane DeCock, at age 24, started to work with Ansel and learn
the fine art of photography and the making of master prints,
staying with him from 1963 until 1972.
family. Spanning seven plus decades of use,
this equipment has recorded iconic images
of people, events and nature of twentieth
century America.
In 1968, Adams gave her his view camera, and she continued to
use this “second hand” equipment for her entire career.
This collection has never been seen or
Ansel Adams said of Liliane’s photography, “DeCock presents
to us a personal, private world. It is a world of individualistic
beauty and intensity. She communicates to all who will respond;
she relates to no particular pattern of concept or execution. Hers
is fine photography—and what more can one say?”
offered to the public before this auction. In
our research, we could not find an Ansel
Adams view camera that has ever been sold
or available prior to the Arca-Swiss we are
presenting. Willard Morgan’s post-war Leica
is also a rare item, and would be a historically

significant addition to any Leica collection.

these important pieces. Most of the items in
this collection are considered “professionally
used” equipment, and as such, shows signs of
wear and use. We have not made any effort
to clean, repair, adjust or lubricate any of the
items, instead, leaving all items in “as found”
condition for the discerning collector.

Ansel Adams was a prominent photographer of the American
West, particularly Yosemite National Park, using his work to
promote conservation of wilderness areas. His black-and-white
images helped to establish photography as a fine art, and Adams
as one of the finest and most recognized photographers to date.
Adams, with Fred Archer, are regarded as the developers of the
Zone System—a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the
contrast of the final print. The tonal range, clarity and depth are
hallmarks of his large format photographs.
Adams was the last and defining figure in the romantic tradition
of 19th century American landscape painting and photography.
He grew up in a time and place formed by the presidency of
Theodore Roosevelt and “muscular” Americanism, in a new
nation, particularly in the rugged West.
Commercial success followed the introduction of his first portfolio,
Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, which included his famous
image “Monolith, the Face of Half Dome.” Between 1929 and
Willard Detering Morgan was a photographer, writer, editor, and
educator and the husband of photographer Barbara Morgan,
known for her documentation of Martha Graham’s dances.
Morgan’s career spanned some of the most influential
developments in the history of American photography. He was
instrumental in introducing the first 35 mm camera in the US, was
an early director of photography at MOMA, a writer and editor of
technical publications on photography (from the Leica Manual, to
Ansel Adam’s Basic Photo Series, Encyclopedia of Photography,
to Encyclopedia Britannica), and was a photo editor at LIFE and
LOOK publications.
When Morgan saw the Leica Model A camera in 1928, he wrote
to E. Leitz in New York City and proposed trading two Leica
cameras and accessories for articles and images that would
feature the Leica camera. In 1928, Barbara and Willard Morgan
set out to capture the Southwest landscape on film. Morgan used
these images to illustrate his articles, becoming the first American
photographer to use the 35 mm Leica as a professional camera.
Morgan was offered a position at E. Leitz, Inca. and moved to
New York City in 1930.
5
In 1931, Morgan lectured throughout the US on the use of the 35
mm Leica camera for Leitz. During this time, he also designed a
new Leica projector to accommodate a 2 X 2 inch slide that would
become the industry standard. He created the Leitz publication
Leica Photography in 1932 and continued to publicize the
Leica camera. He also patented the FocoSlide, a copying device
manufactured by Leitz. In 1934, Morgan and Lester Publishers
was founded, and the Leica Manual was published the next year,
edited by Willard Morgan.
Liliane DeCock Morgan
(1939 - 2013)
Morgan’s skill grew as she also contributed more to the
photographic community of that time. In personal correspondence
Ansel Adams, in the mentor role, once wrote, “I have unlimited
faith in you as a person and as a photographer.” She eventually
instructed in and coordinated the Ansel Adams Yosemite Workshops
and was a founding trustee of the Friends of Photography. By the
early 1970s she was recognized as a fine photographer receiving
a number of awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1972.
Douglas O. Morgan
(1932 - 2007)
Morgan left Carmel in 1972 after her marriage to Douglas
Morgan, publisher of Ansel Adam’s early technical photography
books, who she had met during a workshop in Yosemite Valley. She
moved to the East coast where she started a family and became
involved in the Morgan family businesses. Working with Douglas
and her brother-in-law, Lloyd Morgan, at Morgan and Morgan
publishers and Morgan Press, she edited monographs of prominent
photographers, edited the Photo Lab Index, and contributed to
many other fine photography titles. At the same time she became
master printer for her mother-in-law, famed dance photographer
Barbara Morgan, who, along with her deceased husband, Willard
D. Morgan, had been a colleague and friend of Ansel Adams for
over 40 years.
Starting in 1936, Morgan worked as the first LIFE magazine
contributions editor and in 1938, as director of exhibits at Life
magazine, Morgan was responsible for the first showing of the
Farm Security Administration photographs.
In 1943, the Museum of Modern Art appointed Morgan the first
director of photography and the newly established Photography
Center. Morgan scheduled Ansel Adams to deliver five lectures at
the Center, eventually convincing Adams to write the books that
Morgan and Lester would begin publishing in 1948—The Basic
Photo Series, which are the first of Adam’s publications to include
the Zone System principles.
Willard and Barbara Morgan had their first child, Douglas Oliver
Morgan, in1932, while living in Gramercy Park, NY and a second
son, Lloyd Brooks Morgan in 1935.
Morgan maintained relationships with Beaumont and Nancy
Newhall, Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Berenice
Abbott, Albert Boni, Julien Bryan and many others in the fields of
photography and publishing.
Liliane DeCock, photo by Ansel Adams
Liliane DeCock Morgan became a vital part of the West coast fine
photography world and photographic assistant to Ansel Adams
in the early 60’s. Their association had begun when photographer
Brett Weston had recommended Morgan for a short-term position
spotting prints for his Portfolio IV. Adams wrote, “I was quite
impressed with her work from the start and with her perseverance
in finishing off some four thousand prints. She stayed on with
me for a little more than nine years…” Morgan was a full-time
photographic assistant to Adams from 1963 to 1971, and lived
nearby the Adams home in Carmel, California.
During her time working with Adams. She printed his master
works, prepared prints for exhibitions, traveled with him to
capture images, instructed in summer workshops, and was an
integral part of the social environment that connected scores of
artists, intellectuals, and conservationists of that time. Between
1964 and 1967 Morgan supported Adams and Nancy Newhall
as they captured images and stories for Fiat Lux, the University
of California system’s centennial book. She learned the craft
of photography by apprenticeship as well as through her own
experience traveling throughout the United States. It was a
remarkable ascent considering her challenging beginnings as a
child growing up in Belgium during and after World War II.”.

Douglas Morgan at Leitz headquarters, Germany
Douglas O. Morgan was born in New York City on May 7, 1932.
As a child during World War II, he and his brother published a
hand-typeset magazine called The Fresh Egg from the family’s
chicken farm in Scarsdale, N.Y. Filled with articles by relatives
and friends living abroad that described a war-ravaged Europe,
the magazine was distributed to neighbors along with eggs from
the farm.
Their mother, Barbara Morgan, was a photographer whose subjects
included dancers and choreographers like Martha Graham, Erick
Hawkins, José Limón, Doris Humphrey and Merce Cunningham.
Each year Adams would grant Morgan 3-6 weeks of vacation in
which she would travel alone around the continental United States
capturing images of rural America.
Liliane DeCock Morgan and Ansel Adams, ca. 1968
Their father, Willard Morgan, was the first picture editor for Life
magazine, the first director of the department of photography
7
at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the founder of
Morgan & Morgan, publishers of photographic literature. Douglas
Morgan graduated from Colorado College in 1954 and pursued
graduate work in printing management at what is now Carnegie
Mellon University in 1956. He spent two years in the Army Corps
of Engineers in charge of map-making at the Fort Belvoir printing
center in Virginia.
Mr. Morgan began acquiring antique wood types in the 1950s
while managing an independent printing and publishing house that
showcased 20th century photographers. These woodblock letters
and fonts were commonly used in the mid- to late-19th century
for advertisements, posters and handbills. The collection came to
be called the Morgan Press Type Collection, after the company
he had established with his brother, Lloyd, in 1958—Morgan
Press Inc. Printers and Typographers, in Hastings-on-Hudson,
N.Y. The Morgan Press Type Collection, amassed by Douglas and
Lloyd and their Father, is the largest collection of 19th century
wood type in the United States. The Morgan collection, which
also includes foundry type, along with printers cuts, ornaments,
rules, and dingbats, is now housed today at The National Museum
of American History in Washington, part of the Smithsonian
Institution, and makes some of the collection available to
researchers. Printing, photography, art and design were the life

blood of the family. His mother, Barbara Morgan, was a pioneering
artist who photographed Martha Graham, and his father Willard
Morgan was the first picture editor for Life Magazine, as well as
the first Director of the Department of Photography at MOMA,
and founder of Morgan and Morgan, Inca. (initially Morgan and
Lester) publishers of photographic literature. Among the titles
were the first Leica Manual, Ansel Adams Basic Photo Series and
the Photo Lab Index.
After his father died in 1967, Mr. Morgan assumed management
of Morgan and Morgan and published many more books, including
a monograph series of eminent photographers like William
H. Jackson, Andreas Feininger and Ansel Adams, as well as
instructional photography books. He also published all of Ansel
Adams‘ technical photographic books.
Douglas met Liliane DeCock at an Ansel Adams Yosemite
workshop in the early 1970‘s, married and returned to New York
to run the family business.
Douglas was a pioneering printer and publisher of some of the
seminal photographers of the 20th Century, as well as a compiler
of the country’s largest wood-type collection, an inspiration for
the graphic design revolution of the 1960s.

Leica pioneer in the US, Willard Morgan had established a

several of their 35 mm cameras throughout his photographic
career—starting in 1928 with a Leica A. This Leica IIIc was
owned and used by Willard from 1946 to 1950.
In 1950, Willard gave the Leica to Douglas Morgan, his son.
Douglas continued using this camera to document various
US trips and family events.
Considered the “father” of Leica 35 mm photography in the
United States, technical writer and Leica designer, original
Willard Morgan Leica equipment is both historically
important and certainly highly collectible—a pivotal piece

General Terms and Conditions
Condition
All items are offered “as is.” There is no return privilege, and all sales are final. We have sought to
express a useful, general guide to the condition of each lot. We have also attempted to describe any
damage or restoration, but our descriptions cannot be accepted as absolutely definitive and complete.
The absence of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference
to particular defects imply the absence of others. Such information is given for guidance only and the
condition of any lot, and the nature and extent of any damage or restoration should be confirmed prior to
the sale.

Estimates and reserves
The estimated prices are the approximate prices expected to be realized, excluding buyer’s premium.
They are prepared in advance of the auction sale and are subject to revision. Furthermore,
they are not definitive and meant only to represent general guidelines. Every item in the auction has a
“reserve” price.
Internet bidding
You will be able to bid in “real time” on-line during the auction. Internet bidders pay a buyer’s premium
of 23.0%. Register for internet bidding at www.Proxibid.Com/revivalauctions
Local taxes
A 6.35% Tax is due on all deliveries made in Connecticut. However, all lots that are delivered outside
Connecticut, by mail or courier, are not charged any USA taxes.
Shipping
The buyer pays all shipping costs, and bears responsibility for any damage or loss during shipment.
However, revival auctions will buy insurance on all shipments on behalf of the purchaser. Buyer is
charged the direct cost of shipping and insurance plus a modest additional fee for packaging and
handling. USA shipments are normally made by insured ups or insured registered mail, or, by special
arrangement, with a courier service such as FedEx, UPS, or DHL. Purchases over $75,000 can be insured
by special arrangement. Note that some countries have limits of insurance and therefore the liability for
shipments above a country’s limit will be the responsibility of the buyer.

arrangements have been made.
The following provisions constitute the entire agreement between the Revival Auction Company
LLC, the consignor, and the buyer, and will govern the sale of all property sold through live and
internet bidding at any Revival Auction Company LLC auction conducted in Connecticut and on
line at www.Proxibid.Com/revivalauctions.Com.
1. Buyer’s commission
On-line internet bidders will pay a buyer’s premium of twenty three per cent (23.0%). These commissions
are payable in addition to the winning bid price.
2. Condition of property
All property is sold “as is” without warranty or guaranty of any kind whether expressed, implied or
statutory including without limitation any warranty or guaranty as to character, fitness for a particular
purpose, merchantability, physical condition, or rarity. Prospective buyers must rely solely on their own

bids advance the price by not less than 10%. All items of property will be sold with a reserve which may
be confidential. The Revival Auction Company LLC, may bid on behalf of the consignor to effectuate the
