Question for Children: Jesus teaches us that our faith is is
powerful and with it, we can do great things. We can forgive,
love, and share with others. Which of these do you do most
often?
Question for Youth: The Gospel tells us even a little bit of
faith is enough to make amazing things happen. How are you
keeping your faith alive and growing? What good things
happen in your life because of your faith?
Question for Adults: Being “in Christ” means living as
Christ teaches. What signs do you see in your life of
generosity, forgiveness, hospitality, or any other of Jesus’
teachings?

Questions about the Scriptures used during Mass
How is the Lectionary arranged?
The Lectionary is arranged in two cycles, one for Sundays and one for weekdays.
The Sunday cycle is divided into three years, labeled A, B, and C. 2014 was Year A. 2015 was
Year B, 2016 is Year C, etc, keeping in mind the Church Year begins 1st Sunday Advent. In Year A, we read mostly
from the Gospel of Matthew. In Year B, we read the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. In Year C, we
read the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of John is read during the Easter season in all three years. The first reading, usually
from the Old Testament, reflects important themes from the Gospel reading. The second reading is usually from one of
the epistles, a letter written to an early church community. These letters are read semi-continuously. Each Sunday, we
pick up close to where we left off the Sunday before, though some passages are never read.
The weekday cycle is divided into two years, Year I and Year II. Year I is read in odd-numbered years (2015, 2017, etc.)
and Year II is used in even-numbered years (2014, 2016, etc.) The Gospels for both years are the same. During the year,
the Gospels are read semi-continuously, beginning with Mark, then moving on to Matthew and Luke. The Gospel of
John is read during the Easter season. For Advent, Christmas, and Lent, readings are chosen that are appropriate to the
season. The first reading on weekdays may be taken from the Old or the New Testament. Typically, a single book is read
semi-continuously (i.e., some passages are not read) until it is finished and then a new book is started.
The year of the cycle does not change on January 1, but on the First Sunday of Advent (usually late November) which is
the beginning of the liturgical year.
In addition to the Sunday and weekday cycles, the Lectionary provides readings for feasts of the saints, for common
celebrations such as Marian feasts, for ritual Masses (weddings, funerals, etc.), for votive Masses, and for various needs.
These readings have been selected to reflect the themes of these celebrations. -USCCB
October is Respect Life Month.
October 4, 2015 - Respect Life Sunday is celebrated in the Diocese of Trenton and in all parishes
throughout the United States. The 2015 USCCB theme is "Every Life is Worth Living." This is an
opportunity for all to focus on the great gift of human life. For more information see www.usccb.org/
respectlife or www.dioceseoftrenton.org/respectlifeministry or call 609-403-7192.

event. Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful witnessing against abortion and for greater respect for all
human life. Signs provided by the Life Chain National Office are held along Route 9 in front of St.
Veronica's rectory while praying for 1 hour. Refreshments are served afterwards. This event can be

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in
Ordinary Time.
Through our baptismal
anointing we truly are prophets (see first
reading). All of us are commissioned to speak
and do deeds in the Lord’s name. Thus,
baptism is more than initiation into a group—it
is the transformation of ourselves into disciples
of Christ who follow the Teacher by faithful
service “in [his] name.” As a follower of
Christ, this means doing something so great as
volunteering for one of the liturgical ministries
or so simple a task as taking the garbage out
without being asked.
The month of October provides us with the
opportunity for us to reflect on the life and
witness of Saint Francis of Assisi as well as Our
Lady of the Rosary. Next weekend, we observe
Respect Life Sunday. There are many ways in
which we show our respect for the dignity of
human life. Our sharing of clothes and other
essential items, our service at soup kitchens,
Chastity Awareness, and certainly our steadfast
position against Abortion and the Death
Penalty. While these are some of the most
difficult issues of our day, let us pray for an
openness to God’s will for us in our lives to be
faith-filled witnesses, especially concerning the
dignity of every human life from conception
through natural death.
Next weekend, I am scheduled to present our
Stewardship Report at all of the Masses. Each
year this is a way for me to preface the choices
we have made and the results of those choices
as they affect our parish. As stakeholders, each
of us has a right to this information. It
demonstrates the progress that is being made.
Our annual Stewardship Newsletter is being
prepared and should be at your homes in the
coming weeks. Please read it. It is your right
to know this information and the overall
condition of our parish. Should you have
questions, please ask one of our trustees or a
member of the parish staff.
Last week, we had the opportunity to celebrate
the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation
with our candidates for the Sacrament of
Confirmation, their sponsors and their parents.
This coming week, we will welcome His
Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of
Trenton who will confer this sacrament upon
our candidates. Let us pray for these young
women and men, their sponsors and families
who are the future of our catholic church. May
the descent of the Holy Spirit upon them give
them what is needed to live their lives as
committed Roman Catholics and bring God’s
steadfast love into a world that longing. Let us
pray for His Excellency, that God’s grace will
flow through him to these candidates and to
our parish community.
This weekend, we welcome His Holiness, Pope
Francis to our land and into our homes. May
this Apostolic Visit inspire us to greater fidelity
in sustaining the communion of the Catholic
Church in our communities and throughout the
world. May the message of Mercy continue to
inspire all citizens of our great land. Let us
continue to pray for the Holy Father as he
proclaims Christ to a world that has been made
suspect and even hostile to the Christian
Message. Have a great week. Let us remember
one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.

Come, Holy Spirit!
Continuation of the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
5 & 6 of the Seven Gifts
Knowledge is awareness of God’s plan. It is not simply an
accumulation of facts but rather an understanding of God’s
purpose and how we ought to respond. Knowledge helps bring
to light temptations and to discern whether to give in or live a
life worthy of God’s approval.
Reverence is our obedience to God and our willingness to
serve him. It is not just obedience through a sense of duty but
rather obedience out of love and devotion. It facilitates a
deeper respect for God and the Church.

In order to accomplish this, we will need
more facilitators. Facilitators do not have
to be experts in any sense of the word;
they just keep the group focused and

The Martha Mary Guild’s October meeting is traditionally a
“four-fold evening”. New members are welcomed with a
special ceremony in the Spiritual Center Chapel, conducted by
Fr. Jeff or a Deacon and “old members” recommit to the Guild.
Then everyone goes to Madonna Hall for a delicious Pot-Luck
Supper, as a fitting welcome to the new members. (Kindly take
your “pot-luck” dishes to Madonna Hall kitchen beforehand.)
After the feast, there is a fun Fashion Show, with members
modeling what they purchased at the September Clothing Sale.
Pictured above are participants from a previous show. If any
members wish to participate in the Fashion Show, please call
Sue Coleman at 732-946-4238.
This year’s meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with the
rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 6:30 p.m., followed by
the ceremony, dinner and show. Come and join us and see
what the Guild is all about!
The Martha Mary Guild sincerely thanks everyone who
contributed to the Clothing/Linen Sale in anyway - the donors,
the customers, the many workers – including Freda O’Doherty,
Jane Slattery, Peggy Caponegro and their “Boutique Bunch”,
Treasure Herman and her “Linen Ladies”, and the “Gem” who
took care of the jewelry table: Barbara Varga. Congratulations
and kudos to the dedicated and hardworking General Chairs:
Sue Coleman and Kathy Adleman. They kept everything going
smoothly - from set-up to clean-up! A special thank you to the
husbands and to the strong young men from Matthew Butler’s
Youth Group (including some parents) who helped to set up
and then came in on Saturday to help us “bag it up”. Many
charitable organizations will benefit from everyone’s hard
work!
