CATHOLIC EDUCATION GETS A BOOST FROM THE BISHOP'S APPEAL For thousands of kids, going to religious education at their parish is a chance to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus. These kids are taught by faith-filled educators who have been given quality tools to do the job of teaching our young people. At the center of creating these tools is the diocesan Education Department. MOTHER/DAUGHTER DAY PICTURES Pictures are on display in the Narthex from the Nativity Women's Guild Mother-Daughter Event which was held on May 3rd. Please stop by and take a look. They are wonderful pictures taken by Jean Ray and Carol Fountain. If you have not made a gift to the Bishop's Appeal, please prayerfully consider the impact it has on our parishes, Catholic schools and communities and make a gift today at www.Catholicfoundationgb.org/give. Please join them on Tuesday, May 29th at 6:30 PM Your assistance with changing the environment of the Church to Summer Ordinary Time would greatly be appreciated. Any time you can afford would be great! Even during the day if evenings won’t work, just call Wayne Efferson at 490-4352 ext. 206. We are now in need of more volunteers to sign up for a time-slot on Mondays when we make available The Blessed Sacrament. The sign up sheet is located at the rear of church next to the poster (Eucharistic Adoration). Also, as a reminder, whenever a national holiday is celebrated on a Monday i.e. Memorial Day and Labor Day, adoration will be suspended. PENTECOST SUNDAY—Sunday, May 27th TO BOW OR GENUFLECT? The Easter Season lasts 50 days ending with Pentecost Sunday, hence the name. It celebrates the overwhelming experience of God pouring out the spirit upon the first community of those who believed Jesus was the Lord and Christ (Acts 2:1-4). It is called the birth of the Church or the birth of the church’s mission. The color for this day is Red which symbolizes the intense love and fire of the Holy Spirit. Consider wearing this color on this day. Also, a special prayer, called The Sequence is used on Pentecost after the 2nd reading. The Sequence invites the Holy Spirit to come upon us to recreate, heal, and forgive and is sung in a hymn form. Now that the tabernacle, housing the Blessed Sacrament, has been moved forward in our church, several people have asked what the proper reverence should be when passing by it. This excerpt is taken from an article that appeared in the Compass in March 2011: Bowing is the proper sign of reverence to the altar (when no tabernacle is near it) while genuflection (on the right knee) is reserved for God, we only genuflect to the body of Christ reserved in the tabernacle. (If in doubt, just look for the sanctuary light, which is kept burning by the tabernacle whenever the sacred species is present.) So, as a sign of adoration and love for the Body of Christ, we should genuflect, if physically possible, when passing by the tabernacle. Thanks for asking! OUR OWN NEEDS COLLECTION—May 27th CHILDREN’S CHOIR ANNUAL CONCERT On the Feast of Pentecost it is an appropriate action to take this special diocesan collection. This collection combines 4 major causes: Catholic Communications/Evangelization, through which the Church is able to use media and technology to help spread the good news of Jesus. The Catholic University of America supports the work of this outstanding academic institution where many of our priests, religious, and lay people have received their education. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal gives grants to home mission dioceses and other missionary agencies in the United States and its dependencies. The Black and Native American Missions, funds evangelization programs for these communities in dioceses throughout the country. Please give as generously as you are able. will be on Sunday, May 20th at 2:00 PM in church. Come and hear these young voices sing some songs that you haven’t heard at any of the 10:15 AM Masses. LITURGICAL MINISTERS The new Spring/Summer schedule is now in the Narthex for those who do not have access to the internet. Those online can download and print it; a username and password was sent by email on May 18th. If you have any questions or concerns contact Wayne Efferson, Director of Worship (490-1352, ext. 206) or [email protected]. COME TO THE WATER— EASTER LILY BULBS…We Still Have Some!!! The new water in our font was blessed on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vichgil. Come bless yourself with it each time you come to church. It is a constant reminder to us that we are baptized into the Lord Jesus, a reminder to live out the Gospel Message. Feel free to take some holy water for home and individual blessings. Will be ready soon for those who wish to take some home and plant. Please contact Wayne Efferson (490-1352, ext. 206) or email [email protected]. PRESENTING THE GIFTS OF BREAD & WINE Presenting the gifts at Mass is a special way to participate. We invite you to do this as a special way to acknowledge a birthday, anniversary, special Mass Intention or just celebrating with your family.
