III: Jonathan Penston & Corinne Boughton From the Pastor’s Corner FEEDING THE MULTITUDE J esus looked out on the large hungry crowd that had gathered on the hillside and asked Philip: “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He did this to test Philip and eventually prepare him and the other apostles for the great miracle that was to come, which was the multiplication of the fishes and loaves. It was also to show that Jesus came to feed them not just physically, but spiritually as well. Last weekend a “hungry” crowd gathered, not on a dry and dusty hillside, but in the little hamlet of a northwestern Dutchess County town named Tivoli. They came to St. Sylvia’s Roman Catholic Church to be fed. Just as Jesus instructed His apostles over 2,000 years ago to feed the hungry, that mission is passed on to His priests to feed the “hungry” throughout the world. Two of these priests who took up this mission are Fr. Curley and Msgr. Olendzki. They faithfully served the Archdiocese of New York over the years through their ministry to the “hungry.” Both priests served in various assignments over the past few years where their journeys eventually brought them to the beautiful churches of St. Christopher (Red Hook) and St. Sylvia (Tivoli). Fr. Curley and Msgr. Olendzki ministered to the hungry Catholics of the Archdiocese of New York; firstly, through the powerful words of scripture; secondly, through the administering of the sacraments; and thirdly, through their countless pastoral visits to the sick and homebound. Breaking open the Word of God in scripture can be challenging at times. One of the jobs of a priest is to do exactly this. When I first became a priest, my former boss on Wall Street asked me to promise that I would do my best to make the scriptures understandable to the people. After working long hours and commuting back and forth to work, the faithful (the hungry) are just looking for a few words on a Sunday to help them make sense of the week that has passed and prepare them for the week ahead. As mentioned above, both priests not only broke open the Word of God, they also celebrated the sacraments with their people. Two of the most powerful and effective ways that people receive the grace to give them the strength to be who God wants them to be are through the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Through Reconciliation God’s mercy is granted, and in the sacrament of the Eucharist one actually shares in the mystical life of Christ. The sacraments truly are outward signs of God’s grace to make us holy. This past Sunday as I concelebrated Mass at St. Sylvia’s with Fr. Curley, while Msgr. Olendzki served as master of ceremonies, I gazed around the church at the beautiful stained glass windows depicting the sacraments. When I prayed over the words of the gospel about the “feeding” of the multitude, the stained glass windows reminded me of this mission that is entrusted to every priest. Both Fr. Curley and Msgr. Olendzki, through their pastoral care of the sick, have lived out the images shown in those stained glass windows. They have made the feeding of the multitude a reality. As we wish both of these fine priests much health and happiness in their future journeys, we ask God to bless them as they continue to carry out their priestly lives in the service of God and His people. Fr. Xavier and myself will do our best to live our priestly lives in the service of God’s people. We will build up this beautiful new parish family of St. Christopher and St. Sylvia whereby everyone will be fed both physically and spiritually. Ad multos annos, Fr. Curley and Msgr. Olendzki. God bless, Fr. Pat A HEARTFELT WELCOME Welcome, as we all celebrate our first Mass as the newly formed parish family of St. Christopher / St. Sylvia. Mark your calendars for an afternoon of fellowship, food, children’s games, music, and fun! FRIDAY, AUGUST 7 is FIRST FRIDAY 9:00 AM Morning Mass will be followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 6:00 PM Come spend an hour with Our Lord! Two guardians needed for each hour/Sign-up in back of Church Of all Catholic religious practices, one of the most beneficial and spiritual is the HOLY HOUR. This is a full hour of prayer and spiritual reading in church in the presence of the BLESSED SACRAMENT. As the Holy Hour begins there is a grateful realization that this is a prayer that is not rushed. There will be time to think and time to pray. And so the noises and distractions of life fade into the background. Like the shouting of school children as recess ends when the school bell rings. The Lord God is here. Nothing else matters. The multicolored, ever changing nothingness that is our time in history drops away. This could be any century. Time means nothing: We are facing eternity. WE REACH OUT TO GOD _______________________________________________________________ BENEFIT OF HOLY HOUR “Our Lord is hidden there in the Blessed Sacrament, waiting for us to come and visit Him, and make our requests to Him.” -St. John Vianney DUTCHESS FOR LIFE Join us in spreading a Peaceful Prayer Prolife Presence throughout Dutchess County, through participation in life chains, prayer services, the upcoming 40 Days for Life Campaign, and other events. (We don’t do those other “P” words: protest or picket.) PASTORAL VISIT OF POPE FRANCIS The Cardinal has just announced that the pastoral visit to our archdiocese by His Holiness, Pope Francis, will take place September 24-26, 2015. The Holy Father will celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden on Friday evening, September 25th (tentatively scheduled for 6:30pm). The Archdiocese will be assigning each parish a limited amount of tickets to the Mass. We will know more about this in the coming weeks and will post the information in the bulletin. Stay tuned!
