SYLVIA MERGER A s you may well know by now, the merger of the two parishes of St. Christopher and St. Sylvia has already begun. The expected date that both parishes will be merged into one new parish is August 1, 2015. Preparations for the consolidation of these two existing parishes will take place over the next several months and parishioners from both parishes will prayerfully work together with the Archdiocesan Implementation Plan. Our new Auxiliary Bishop, Peter Byrne, who was just appointed by Pope Francis back in August, will play an active roll in the transition process. Bishop Byrne intends to celebrate a Mass at St. Sylvia’s Church in Tivoli. Fr. Curley and I plan to be present as well. Bishop Byrne has indicated to me the importance of playing an active roll in the consolidation of the two parishes into one new parish. Once the date and time of the Mass is established, both parishes will be notified so that a large representation of families from both parishes will be present. Over the past year and a half, a cluster team was formed in every parish of the Archdiocese of New York. These teams met with other cluster teams in their region whereby, under the guidance of a professional consultant, the Reade Group, these parish cluster teams analyzed important data and self evaluations of the data. The data took into consideration such variables as demographics, sacramental information, finances, and church and building structures. The role of each cluster team was to present a case for their parish to the Archdiocese of New York. After a year of meetings and discussions, it was decided by His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan, under the advice of his Consulters, Priest Counsel, the Archdiocesan Advisory Team, and the Reade Group to merge the two parishes of St. Christopher and Sylvia into one new parish. The announcement was made on the Feast of All Saints, November 1, 2014. The cardinal made the decision that all weekday and Sunday Masses will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. He stated that Masses might be held at St. Sylvia’s Church for extraordinary celebrations. These extraordinary celebrations, for example, may consist of weddings and funerals. On Wednesday, January 14th 2015, the pastors who are affected by the merger attended a “question and answer” with the cardinal. There was a lot of discussion concerning: the new name of the parish, the stages of the implementation process, and where the sacraments will be celebrated. The cardinal promised that these questions would be addressed over the next few months. For now, I envision that the new name of our newly formed parish will be The Parish Communities of St. Christopher and St. Sylvia. All these questions will be addressed in a timely manner. Currently our Parish Core Team consisting of George Sevigny, Bill Paccione, Rita Moglia, and myself will meet with Archdiocesan and Reade Group Officials and St. Sylvia’s Core Team. As the meetings progress I will do my best to update the entire parish through the use of the bulletin, flock notes, the website, and the parish Sunday announcements. It is an honor to serve as your pastor. We are blessed with Fr. Xavier and a wonderful staff. I look forward to leading us through this merger and into the future. Please pray for Fr. Curley and me as we do our best with God’s grace. God bless, Fr. Pat Look What’s Happening at St. Christopher Parish! ____________________________________________________!
