DOLNY STADIUM Home of the Bearcats Bearcats should have more depth in 2012 Head Coach Kermit Smith K ermit Smith became Lander's fifth head baseball coach when he was hired in June 2009. Smith spent eight years as Kermit Smith Belmont Abbey’s Head Coach head coach, and nine overall with the program. During his time there, Smith worked diligently to improve the team athletically and academically. In 2002, he became the youngest head coach in the nation at age 23. That year the team went 35-20, won the conference regular season championship, and just missed on a regional bid. Smith’s Crusaders, who reached the NCAA Division II World Series for the first time in school history in 2009, finished the season with a 40-26 record, and won the Carolinas Conference regular-season title with a 14-5 mark. They qualified for the Regionals by capturing their first-ever Conference Carolinas Tournament title. In 2008, Smith led the Crusaders to a memorable year, finishing the season with a 41-22 record and a trip to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. Smith became the winningest coach in Belmont Abbey history on February 4, 2008. Smith also served as the head coach for the Gaston Braves American Legion team from 2002-2007, guiding them to a 99-62 record. He was also a regular as a speaker at major functions in the surrounding area. Smith, a native of Arcadia, Fla., graduated from Pfeiffer University and received his master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania. He is married to the former Rebecca Hethcox and the couple have one son, Maddox Kilpatrick Smith, who was born June 11, 2007. T he first weekend of May 2010 was bittersweet for the Lander baseball program as the Bearcats believed they were closing out an era at historic Legion Field. There were mixed emotions about leaving Legion, but excitement about moving to a new stadium on campus in 2011. But weather delayed completion of the Stephen B. Dolny Baseball Stadium and the 2011 Lander baseball season would again be played at Legion Field. Good things come for those who wait, however, and the new era of Lander baseball is finally here. It officially begins at Dolny Stadium Feb. 3 when the Bearcats host the Newberry College Wolves in the 2012 season opener. “It’s exciting for the players, the coaching staff, for all of us,” senior shortstop AJ Nunziato said. “It’s been on everybody’s mind for years now. I heard about it when I was recruited here five years ago." The Bearcats got on their new field for the first time in the fall of 2011 with fall practice and scrimmages. And they can’t wait for the 2012 season to officially begin with the weekend series versus Newberry Feb. 3-5. “About the best way that I can describe it is feeling like a kid on Christmas Day every time I’m out there. Dolny Stadium is worth the wait, so much so that fifth-year seniors Nunziato and White are happy that their baseball careers were set back by one year. Nunziato missed the 2010 season due to injury and White sat out 2008. “Like AJ mentioned, especially for us, we have waited so long for this,” White said. “I know he didn’t like red-shirting two years ago and I didn’t like red-shirting my first year, but it’s definitely worth it (red-shirting) to be out there now. It’s going to be great playing Newberry that first (opening) day.” The Lander baseball program began in 1998 and played its first 14 years at Legion Field, an old facility with bleachers that is located a few miles off campus on Highway 72. Dolny Stadium is located at the Jeff May Athletics Complex on Montague Avenue, the main thoroughfare of Greenwood, across the street from the entrance into Lander University. The complex includes the also-new Doug Spears Softball Field, the Joe Cabri Tennis Courts, a soccer field, and a walking/running trail. The new baseball stadium is state-of-the-art with individual seats for ultimate fan comfort. “In my mind, we have the best stadium and probably the best playing surface, (and) the best draining system,” said Nunziato when comparing Dolny Stadium to opponent fields. “For not only us, but everybody who is coming to play on our field this year, they will be impressed.” The draining system has been a major improvement from Legion Field and very helpful as the Bearcats prepare for the 2012 season. “We wouldn’t have been able to practice the last few days if we were at Legion (Field),” Nunziato said during a damp period in mid-January. “It helps us get more work in.” Continued on next page Bearcats to move to Dolny Stadium Continued from previous page Nunziato said. But even the practices are better in the Bearcats’ new home, Continued on next page Bearcats Move to Dolny Stadium Continued from previous page “I think we are going to play a lot of close ball games like we did last year,” said White, who was 2-2 last year with a 2.19 ERA. “But you will see a team with a lot of tenacity and mental toughness that previous Lander baseball teams might not have had to get us through tough situations. “From a hitting standpoint, we will find ways to manufacture runs, because we know behind the mound our defense will make plays and (catchers) Jeff (May) and Austin (Dunn) both have great arms behind the plate.” Lander’s road schedule includes a weekend series at No. 8 UNC Pembroke, as well as tough Peach Belt road games at traditional powers USC Aiken and Georgia College & State University, as well as strong Georgia Southwestern and North Georgia College & State University teams. “The quality of baseball in the Peach Belt is always good,” Nunziato said. “It has never been poor and never will be poor. You have to play every game to the best of your ability, to be focused on every pitch, of every inning, of every game. And if we do that, we have the talent and capability to play with any team in the Peach Belt, if not the nation.” There are also road games at Limestone, Erskine, Newberry, Anderson, Carson-Newman and North Greenville. There have been weak teams on Lander’s schedule in past seasons, particularly in the early part of the schedule. This year, there are no weak teams. “You have to play the best to be the best,” White said. Chris Anderson, Assistant Coach C hris Anderson was hired as Lander’ss assistant baseball coach in August 2009. A 2001 graduate of Catawba (N.C.) College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education, Chris led the Indian pitching staff to a two-year 62-43 record. He played his first two years of collegiate ball at Three Rivers Community College in Missouri and Chris Anderson helped lead the team to a 35-18 record Assistant Coach and a regional appearance. For the past five years, he helped lead Belmont Abbey to back-to-back NCAA Division II Southeast Region appearances and a trip to the College World Series in 2009. The Crusaders, which also won the Conference Carolinas regularseason and tournament, finished the season ranked No. 4. Joined with current Lander head coach Kermit Smith, Chris helped turn Belmont Abbey into national contender. Belmont Abbey posted a 28-30 record during his first season, a 14-win turnaround from the previous year. As the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator, Belmont Abbey posted a 164-135 overall record, the best five-year stretch in Belmont Abbey baseball history. The Crusaders, who were ranked as high as No. 4 in 2009, had four players sign professional contracts during Anderson’s tenure. He coached two other future professionals at Catawba College. Prior to Belmont Abbey he was an assistant coach at Catawba College, which went 102-63 with two conference tournament championships, one regular-season title and one regional appearance during his three seasons. During the summers of 2003-05, he coached the South Rowan American Legion team. A native of Batesville, Ark., Chris was on two state championship high school teams and one in American Legion. Chris and his wife, the former Meg Jordan of Salisbury, N.C., live in Greenwood. Chris is the oldest of two brothers and two sisters: Luke, Nick, Kirsten and Gretchen. Founded in Williamston in 1872 as a women’s college, Lander is now a coeducational, state-assisted university offering majors, minors and emphases in more than 60 areas of study. Among the degrees offered by Lander are the bachelor of arts, the bachelor of science, the M.Ed. in Montessori education, the M.A.T. - art education and the M.Ed. in teaching and learning. Lander is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The following programs are accredited by their state and national accrediting agencies: athletic training, music, business administration, nursing, teacher education, Montessori program and visual arts. Full-time enrollment is approximately 3,000 with a student body representing 29 states and 17 foreign countries. The College of Business and Public Affairs enrolls the largest number of majors, followed by the College of Education. Lander has an exceptionally strong science program, and more than 90 percent of those applying to medical school in recent years have been accepted. Students in Lander’s engineering dual degree program have a 100 percent acceptance rate at Clemson. Located in the heart of Greenwood, Lander serves as the cultural focal point of the area. Our Cultural Center houses Lander’s Fine Arts programs and this state-of-the-art facility is also the home of the Greenwood-Lander Performing Arts series. Events for community residents of all ages are hosted by the university. These include the Scholastic Art Awards Competition for junior and senior high school artists throughout South Carolina; a high school theatre festival and Fine Arts study tours. Lander athletics teams have reaped honors at both the district and national levels, including 12 national championships in men’s tennis. A member of the NCAA Division II, Lander plays in the Peach Belt Conference and sponsors teams in men’s and women’s basketball, golf, soccer and tennis; men’s baseball; and women’s softball and volleyball. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In 1898, the College gained support of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed Lander College in honor of its founder. In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the College from the Church. In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name and property from the Methodist Conference. The South Carolina General Assembly created the Greenwood County Education Commission, known as The Lander Foundation, to serve as the board of control for the College. Lander thus became the only four-year liberal arts college in the United States to be controlled and financed by a county government. On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, making Lander a state-supported college. The State College Board of Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston and Francis Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees. On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution became Lander University. Lander was founded as a college for women. Men were admitted in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational. STUDENT ACTIVITIES Lander University has over 60 organizations and clubs, each offering students different opportunities. The choices, challenges and opportunities students face by participating in these organizations will assist them in classes and will allow them to meet new friends and socialize with old friends. About Lander L ander’s beautiful 123-acre campus is a combination of contemporary and traditional facilities, and the campus is continually growing and changing. Greenwood - The Emerald City Greenwood is among the top 10 largest cities in South Carolina with a population of 23,000 and a county population exceeding 66,000. It is located near the Piedmont Plateau in western South Carolina. Greenwood is three to four hours west of the beautiful South Carolina beaches and two to four hours southeast of the popular Blue Ridge Mountains. Greenwood’s climate generally allows for year-round enjoyment of the outdoors! At Lake Greenwood, you’ll find public boat landings, bait and tackle shops, fishing piers, picnic and swimming areas, campsites, a variety of restaurants and the Greenwood State Park. For sports enthusiasts, there are many beautifully manicured golf courses in the area as well as Lander’s Joe Chandler Physical Education and Exercise Studies Center, the YMCA and the Greenwood Civic Center. The Greenwood Museum has a variety of exhibits and has twice been recognized as the S.C. Tourist Attraction of the Year in its category. Lander’s Monsanto Gallery receives over 500 visitors monthly to view exhibits of Southeastern artists. The Greenwood Community Theatre offers plays and musicals throughout the year, including children’s theatre. And the Greenwood-Lander Performing Arts sponsors an annual series of concerts and events that brings international music, dance and theatre to Lander’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center stage. school-to-college transition programs for incoming freshmen, and advisement/registration assistance to incoming and future transfer students. Additionally, the Academic Success Center offers placement and CLEP testing and preparation for PRAXIS exams (Education major only). Furthermore, the Academic Success Center coordinates the accommodations for students with disabilities in conjunction with the Wellness Center. Career Services The Office of Career Services provides education, counseling, information and assistance to Lander students in areas that are related to career choices and employment opportunities. These services include individual career counseling, career fairs, interest preference testing, career Internet lab and library, graduate school resources, on-campus interviews, career presentations (resume' writing, interviewing skills, etc.) and a part-time/full-time job posting service. Counseling Services Offices within the Department of Counseling Services exist in order to help prevent problems, or to assist students in dealing with problems once they occur. Personal counseling is available at no charge on an individual, confidential basis to any student experiencing difficulties such as low morale, relationship problems, time management pressures, alcohol or drug abuse, or poor academic performance. Personal counseling is accessible by appointment or on a walk-in basis for students. LANDER’S CAMPUS LIFE Residence Life Lander’s residence halls offer an ideal living environment for student’s right on campus. Besides the convenience of living close, residence life allows students to encounter a full college experience. Meeting new friends, living away from home and no monthly bills are just a few advantages to residence life. Lander’s campus is also safe, friendly and convenient, with parking areas outside each residence hall. Safety SUPPORT SERVICES Lander offers a number of progams to ensure that all students reach their highest potential inside and outside of the classroom. These services are free to the students and we encourage every student to take advantage of them. They often make the difference when a student is encountering difficulties in college. Academic Success Center The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides quality services to students and faculty through a variety of retention efforts. These efforts include peer tutoring, academic advising for high-risk students, advising seminars for faculty, an intervention program for students on academic probation (SASP), one-onone mentoring, study skills classes (College Seminar 101), high Lander University provides a 24-hour certified police force to enforce federal, state, and local laws, and university rules and regulations. They also administer the university vehicle registration and parking policies and offer educational and crime prevention programs for students, faculty and staff. Officers are available to escort students, faculty and staff as a safety precaution to and from areas on campus. Emergency speaker telephones are located across campus. These phones are wired with emergency buttons that will automatically dial University Police. Lander also has a formal Emergency Action Plan which establishes procedures that will aid officials in determining the best use of resources to manage disasters, minimize loss of life and injury, and protect resources and facilities. The conference hosts championships in men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and women’s basketball, cross country, golf soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. The idea for the formation of the PBC was discussed in November 1988 in Greenville, S.C., with 11 schools represented. Five of the colleges at that first meeting, along with two other schools, formed the new conference when USC Aiken hosted another meeting on Dec. 3, 1989. The 13 current PBC members are: Armstrong Atlantic State University, Augusta State University, Clayton State University, Columbus State University, Flagler University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia Southwestern, Lander University, Montevallo University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, North Georgia College & State University, and USC Aiken. The NCAA Lander is one of 254 institutions that are members of NCAA Division II. The NCAA is a voluntary association of about 1,200 colleges and universities, athletic conferences and sports organizations devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics. The colleges, universities and athletic conferences that make up the NCAA appoint volunteer representatives who serve on committees that introduce and vote on rules called bylaws. The members also establish programs to govern, promote and further the purposes and goals of intercollegiate athletics. The membership is divided into three main divisions: Division I, II and III.
