WORLD VITICULTURAL STATISTICS
2010-2011
PREFACE
PREFACE
The annual statistics report’s aim is to provide numerical facts and information to a
worldwide growing vitiviniculture market. Each year, the report analyzes the cases
of growth in the vine and wine sectors. This report provides data on the world’s
vitiviniculture situation in the year 2010 and 2011. The reason this is done is to
bring a better approach of providing general and extensive knowledge about the
vitiviniculture sector. In doing so, member countries are well informed, enabling
them to maintain a certain quality of production.
The OIV Wine & Vine outlook (2010-2011) presents a comprehensive perspective on
the global, regional and country information on vines, grapes, dried grape wine and
other vine products. The purpose of this yearbook is to inform on the trend of the
wine sector at a world level.
The present volume is structured into three chapters: the first chapter is dedicated to
the analysis of areas under vine, and the other two summarize the main trend in
production, trade and consumption for grape and wine. The text and table mostly
describe developments during period from 2006-2011.
The data published in this report have been harmonised with those available to the
Statistics Division of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)
in accordance with the cooperation signed by both inter-governmental organisations.
On a long-term basis, although production and trade monitoring still categorises the
industry's main products as it has in the past (e.g. grapes, raisins, and wines),
consumption statistics and statistics published by the FAO since 2006 are expressed
in "primary product" equivalents, i.e. for our industry, in their equivalent in grapes.
Therefore, although it is possible for OIV member states that fill out the annual
statistics questionnaire, to directly access information on consumption by product,
non-members have been encouraged to systematically use a balance sheet-based
approach to access this information.
Finally, it should be pointed out that, as has already been the case for several years,
the European Commission also contributes additional information for the purposes
of the current document, especially regarding the monitoring of industrial uses and
stocks in Member States.
An electronic version of OIV Wine & Vine outlook (2010-2011) and accompanying
datasets can be found free of charge on the statistics section of the OIV website at:

1. AREAS UNDER VINES
1.1 Surface areas of world vineyards
The areas under vines are defined here as the total land areas planted with vines,
including the areas under vines not yet in production or harvested.
In 2011 the global wine surface area decreased by 76,700 ha compared with 2010,
making the global area under vines to 7517 kha. This is in line with the depressing
trend characterizing the evolution of global areas under vines since 2003 (when it
reached 7,884,000 ha) and, more generally, since the 80s where the average global
vineyards were around 8800 kha.
This phenomenon is mainly due to the implementation of the new Common Market
Organization 1 (CMO) in the European Union (EU). The EU vineyard, which
accounts for almost the 60% of the world vine surface, reduced the vineyard area
from 4520 kha in 2008 to 4253 kha in 2011.
However the shrinkage of the EU vineyard has been partially compensated by the
maintenance and in some cases the expansion of the planted surface areas in the rest
of the world led by the significant growth of China and India.
1
The Common Market Organization (CMO) is designed to monitor EU agriculture markets. The new
CMO for wine provides that starting from the 2008/2009 season and lasting until the 2010/2011 season,
vine growers will benefit from a definitive renunciation premium, on the sole basis of the individual
decision by the applicants, and within the context of a budgetary quota, enabling the uprooting of 175
kha in 3 years. The subsidy is available to all EU producers in member countries that produce more
than five million liters of wine.

* As per OIV calculation
As highlighted in table A in the appendix the evolution path of the world vineyard acreage
is not homogeneous across continents and many differences arise:
• Africa, with 373 kha under vines (+1.2% with respect to 2010), remains to a level in line
with last years. This slight increase is mainly due to the expansion of North African
vineyards, notably in Algeria +3 kha over 2009.
• North and South America, after the modest fall in 2010, vineyards area continues its
expansion reaching 1002 kha. This evolution is mainly attributable to the positive
variations occurred since 2006 in three relevant countries: Brazil (+9 %), Chile (+3%) and
USA (+2%). In addition to these, a fourth emerging producer country, Peru, has recorded a
significative growth with a +20% from 2009 to 2011. At the opposite, Argentina lost 4.6%
of its surface area under vines, resulting in a loss of 10.6 kha from 2009 and 2011. This
trend, however, is marked by a revision in the method for counting surface wine-growing
area in Argentina, which in 2011 no longer included paths and headlands.
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011

1. AREAS UNDER VINES
• Asia, with 1683 kha under vines, continues to see its vineyards growing, though at a
slower pace than the previous years. It has to be remarked that a relevant part of these
vineyards is intended for the production of non-vinified products, in particular in India,
Iran, Turkey and Syria. The main driving forces for this sustained growth are the Chinese
and Indian vineyards. The former have been growing at the stunning rate of 4% per year
both in 2010 and 2011 for a total +41.6 kha in only two years, and the latter recorded a
growth of 38.8% (+33.3 kha) in the same biennium. Once again a regressive evolution has
been recorded in Turkey, which saw the size of its vineyards decline again (-5.6 kha
between 2010 and 2011 and -44 kha between 2006 and 2011) reaching 508 kha in 2011. It
is also worth mentioning an emerging country in the wine sector, Israel, whose vineyards’
growth rate is similar to the Indian one (even though less than 10 kha of land are destinated
to vines).
• The strong cutback of the European vineyard, as mentioned above, is heavily affected by
the implementation of the new community regulations (CMO). From 2008/2009 until
2010/2011 inclusive, this common market structure allows wine producers to receive a
permanent abandonment premium, and a very large share of producers in Member States
asked to benefit from this measure. In particular, from 2008 to 2011, the more significant
effects were recorded in Spain (-133 kha), France (-51 kha), Italy (-49 kha), Portugal (-6
Bulgaria
kha),
(-11 kha) and Hungary (-7 kha). In 2011, the continent's overall surface under vines
decreases by 176 kha with respect to 2009 (with an average loss of 2% per year). Looking
outside the EU there are few European countries that are emerging in the world of wine and
whose vineyards are in continuous growth also thanks to expansionary fiscal policies
aimed at the wine sector development. This is the case of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia,
Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
• Oceania, after a peak of 213 kha in 2009, is slowly reducing the area of its vineyards
with 2011 totals standing at 207 kha. After two decades of growth, 2011 figures show a
reduction on the size of the surface area which is mainly driven by the Australian debacle
of 2010 (-6.6 kha in a year); this despite the slight growth of the vineyards in the other
Oceanian producer country, New Zealand (+ 2.7% with respect to 2009).
It has to be remarked that continental trends should be kept in perspective by weighing the
relative size of area under vines on each continent. For example, Europe still accounted for
56.6% of global vineyard acreage in 2011, thus representing the majority of world vineyards.
The ranking is completed by Asia (22.4%), America (13.3%), Africa (5%) and Oceania
(2.8%).
1.2 Distribution and composition of world vineyards
By taking a look at the distribution and composition of world vineyards two interesting
statistics come out: the percentage of vines not yet in production and the different grape
varieties cultivated (here divided in wine, table and dried grapes).
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
10
1. AREAS UNDER VINES
The share of total world vineyards not yet producing grapes, which can give an insight
on the potential of production for the next years 1, stands at roughly 5.2% in 2011
(compared to 5.5% in 2010 and 3.5% in 2009). This seems to be a relatively stable rate of
coverage compared to the previous years (a part from year 2009 with an exceptionally low
rate), but it should be pointed out that this average does not take into account large vineyards
such as those to be found in China, India, Iran or Portugal.
This rate, for the countries whose information is available, varies from 9% in New Zealand
and Brazil (meaning that there might be a great potential of production for the next years) to
2% in Germany and Greece. However, in the great majority of countries this rate lies
between 4% and 7%.
While in the past years there was a significant difference between the percentages of vines
not yet in production observed in the three largest European wine-producing countries and
those of Southern Hemisphere countries and USA, it can be stated that the percentage of new
or renewed vineyards which are therefore not yet producing grapes is generally converging
between countries, albeit at a pace that is unique to each country. In fact, the averages in
2010 of the two groups of countries, historical European producers on one side and
“new” non-European producers on the other side, are very similar standing at 5.5%.
Moving the attention to the composition of the vineyard, it is possible to individuate
the different share of wine, table and dried grape cultivated in each country. As
shown in table B in the appendix there are some countries that have a significant
share of vineyards cultivated with table-grapes. This is typically the case in 2011 of
Brazil (39%), Chile (29%), South Africa (15%), Greece (15%) and Italy (8%).
In the same order of idea, for the countries for which we have information, in the
USA and Greece, the share of surface in production dedicated to the drying is
relevant, respectively 22% et 23% in 2010.
1
It takes a period of at least three years from the time of planting for the vines to produce a
commercially harvestable crop.

2.1 Production of grapes
In 2011 the world production of grapes (695.8 Mql) has increased for the fifth year
consecutively: an increment of 41 millions of quintals between 2007 and 2011. Despite the
fact that global area under vines has continued to decrease since 2003, the global production
of grapes shows a growth trend stimulated by the extraordinary performances of Asian
producers. This situation can be partly explained by the increasing trend in yields, as well as
by the partial geographical redistribution of global vineyards (a high percentage of new
vineyards are located in regions with irrigations).

• In 2011 Africa, with some 41.2 Mql confirms a level of production in line with the last
two years (-1.3% compared to 2009): the highest variations with respect to 2010 are
recorded in Algeria (-1.6 Mql), Egypt (-0.4 Mql), Morocco (+0.4 Mql) and South Africa
(+0.6 Mql).
• For North and South America the years 2010 and 2011 represent a biennium of growth
for the grapes production, which significantly increase compared to 2009 with 150.2
Mql, or +12.2 Mql over 2009. This continental rise corresponds to an increment in
Argentina, Brazil and Chile, with respectively +10.7%, +13.0% and +16.1% between 2010
and 2011. Even if its level of production is still quite low, it is worth to mention a country,
Peru, which seems to have a big potential and recorded a substantial growth between 2006
and 2011 (+55%).
• As expected, in conjunction with the rapid growth of the overall area under vines, Asia
registers a growth of 8.7 Mql in 2010 to reach 191 Mql. Compared to 2009, the most
significant rise takes place in China (+11.3 Mql).
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
14
2. GRAPES
• Europe sees its 2011 grapes production, with 294.1 Mql, increased compared to 2010,
back to the 2009 level. However, it should be highlighted that the 2010 production holds
the negative record of lowest grape harvest of the last 30 years in Europe. Such strong
variations are mainly determined by the non linear production trend of Austria, France,
Germany, Hungary, Romania and Moldavia: these countries, taken together, lost 14.4 Mql
in 2009/2010 and rose by 16.1 Mql in 2010/2011. It should be also noticed that
Mediterranean regions like in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece recorded grape production
variations in complete countertendency with the former group of countries (increments in
2010 and shrinkages in 2011). This may suggest that, while the average level of production
is mostly influenced by the surface area and the yield, the climatic factor is the most
relevant variable to take into account in analyzing variations in production.
• Similarly to Europe, in Oceania, the grape production levels lost 1.7 Mql in 2010 while
the 2011 harvest is characterized by a rise of 0.9 Mql with a total of 18.9 Mql. The 2011
harvest represent also the record for the New Zealand with 3.3 Mql.
2.1.1 Grapes for fresh consumption (Appendix F)
Using a balance sheet-based approach, this production corresponds to the percentage of
total unprocessed grape production intended for table consumption, after corrections for
international trade and excluding losses. The production level calculated in this way, with
losses included, reached 212.6 Mql in 2011, after a fall in 2010 when total grapes
produced for fresh consumption were about 203.9 Mql. The world production level
registers a remarkable upward trend since the growth rate between 2007 and 2011 is about
11%.
Asia is by far the continent with the highest production with 125.9 Mql in 2011. It
accounts for 59.2% of world production, ahead of Europe whose share is 17.3%. North
and South America and Africa follow and represent respectively 12.8% and 10% of global
production. It is worth to highlight the big increase recorded in China which has passed
from a production of 17.5 Mql in 2000 to 65 Mql in 2011. Among big producers (with
more than 10 Mql produced per year) China is the only one showing such a positive trend
in the last five year period: Egypt, India, Iran and Italy recorded negative growth rates.
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
15
2. GRAPES
2.1.2 World production of dried grapes (Appendix G)
This figure corresponds to the total production of grapes which are dried, regardless of the
initial type of vineyard which produced them. It should be recalled that some producers
resort to pressing to regularise the dried grape market, whereas others produce dried grapes
using grapes initially intended to be consumed fresh.
In 2011 the global production of dried grapes, in line with previous years, reached 12.4
Mql (+2% over 2009 and -4% over 2010). This level of production could be considered high
since it is close to the record dried grapes production of 2010: 12.9 Mql. Also in this case
Asia is, with 6.57 Mql in 2011, the leading continent of dried grape production. It accounts
for 52.9% of world production, followed by North and South America which account for
35.9 %, and Europe that represents 6.5% of the total. The top producers are Turkey (4.1
Mql), USA (3.4 Mql) and Iran (1.5 Mql).
Yields
The yield is defined here as the measure of the amount of grapes that is produced per
unit surface of vineyard and it has been calculated using the entire national vineyard
areas. The graph allows examining the evolution of the average 5 years productivity
of the vineyard in the five continents for the period 1985-2010. As mentioned
above, figures show an overall rising trend in yields at world level: in the last 25
years it has been recorded an improvement of 26.7%. Much of this enhancement
must be attributed to American, Asian and African growth trends, while Europe is
pretty much stable over the years (notwithstanding the shrinkage of its vineyards)
and Oceania exhibits a negative trend1.
What also emerges from the analysis of the yield is that countries that produce
mostly “non fermented products”, most of which are concentrated in Asia, Africa
and America, exhibit higher productivity. This is confirmed by data on specific
countries: for example, the average productivity of four countries that are mainly
producers of fresh and dried grapes (Egypt, China, India and Turkey) is 123 Ql/ha,
almost 50% more of the yield registered in typical wine producer countries
(Argentine, France, Italy and Portugal).
Moving the analysis at country level, among the best performers in 2011 we find
Iraq (191 Ql/ha), Egypt (190 Ql/ha), USA (165 Ql/ha) and Brazil (162 Ql/ha), while
some of the lowest yields are recorded in Georgia (28 Ql/ha), Bulgaria (33 Ql/ha),
Portugal (40 Ql/ha), Moldova (42 Ql/ha) and Spain (55 Ql/ha).
1
However, it should be noticed that for the computation of the yield vines not yet under production are
included, so the final result might be slightly biased especially in countries like Australia and New
Zealand where the percentage of vines not yet producing is high.
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
16
2. GRAPES
2.1.3 Pressed grapes
The quantity of pressed grapes can be estimated on a balance basis, by considering that
it corresponds to the quantity of grapes intended for other purposes than fresh consumption
and drying. To do so, we use a standard coefficient of 0.25 representing dried grape
production from fresh grapes: i.e. it takes 4 kg of fresh grapes to obtain 1 kg of dried grapes.
Calculated in this way, in 2011, the total quantity of pressed grapes was approximately 1:
695.8 – 212.6 – (4 x 12.4) = 433.6 Mql, thus accounting for 62.3% of world grape
production.
By looking backward to the last five years (2006-2010) period this proportion has been quite
stable and comprised between 62% and 64%. The upwards trend in world grape
production therefore mainly benefited from the production of grapes not transformed
into wine, foremost of which are table grapes. Nevertheless, uncertainties regarding losses
(which overwhelmingly concern fresh grapes) and domestic winemaking activities (e.g.
making beverage alcohol) should also be borne in mind. They are often not taken into
account in official figures, yet experts believe that in some countries these figures are not
irrelevant.
The 434 Mql of grapes pressed in 2011 were mainly used to directly produce wines and
grape juice, but also to produce intermediate non-fermented products not intended for direct
human consumption, such as concentrated and non-concentrated musts and concentrated
juices. This intermediate production is mainly intended for:
•
reincorporation in the grape must in order to enrich it;
•
storage, for example to extend the length of time for grape juice or wine production,
or to potentially enrich a future grape harvest;
•
industrial use (e.g. jam) or use in animal food.
The currently available statistical data on the quantity of intermediate non-fermented
products, and their intended use, do not allow further analysis of these flows.
2.1.4 Production of grape juice
In many countries, there is no information on this particular type of production, and when it
does exist there is often confusion between the productions of juice and musts. For this
reason, given the current state of available data, it is not possible to provide any precise
figures on this topic.
1
Total world production of grapes in 2011: 671.1 Mql.
World production of grapes destined for fresh consumption in 2011: 212.6 Mql.
World production of dried grape expressed in quintals of grapes in 2011: four times the weight of
dried fruit, which equals to 4 x 12.423 Mql.

2. GRAPES
Nevertheless, based on the information of table 3 (appendix V) concerning grape juice
consumption in certain countries, world grape juice production may be estimated to be
approximately 10 Mhl.

This table is mainly based on the OIV questionnaires and it is incomplete. It often lacks
information on grape juice consumption, such as a breakdown of the products for which data
is provided (i.e. juice, juice concentrate, musts), or data on certain countries where
consumption may be assumed to be considerable, such as Argentina, China, Australia,
Greece or Spain. However, it is interesting to note the opposing trends characterizing the two
major consuming countries, Brazil and USA. While the former has been gaining since 2007,
on average, 14% per year in terms of consumption, the latter has been losing in the same
period 7% on a yearly basis.
2.2 Trade in fresh and dried grapes (Appendix H and I, J, K)
In 2011, the total volume of imports of fresh grapes reaches 38.6 Mql (close to the record
level of 2008) with a +4.1% with respect to 2010, the exports as well registered a growth
in volume with 39.1 Mql, up by 2% compared to 2010.
In 2011 the USA remains the leading world importer with almost 5.8 Mql, ahead of
Russia (4 Mql). These countries are followed by Germany and Netherlands with 3 Mql
imported, the United Kingdom (2.3 Mql), Canada (1.8 Mql) and France (1.6 Mql). Moving
the attention to exports, Chile is the world's leader with 8.3 Mql exported, beating out Italy
once again (5 Mql of fresh grapes exported). These are followed by the USA, with 4.1 Mql
exported, which thus still can be considered as the most open market for fresh grapes
(leading importer and third largest exporter in the world).

2. GRAPES
Compared to 2010, global trade for dried grapes in 2011 (with 8 Mql) registers a drop in
imports (-3.3%) while exports report moderate +0.6% increase.
The United Kingdom confirms to be also in 2011 the world's largest importer of dried
grapes with 1.2 Mql imported (15% of world imports), followed by Germany (830 mql), the
Netherlands (583 mql), Russia (454 mql), Japan (296 mql) Australia (295 mql), France (239
mql), and Italy (211 mql). As for exports, Asia is by far the leading exporter in 2011, led by
Turkey (2.1 Mql) and Iran (1.2 Mql), but also the USA plays an important role in the dried
grapes international trade being the second largest exporter with 1.5 Mql. To give an idea of
the relevance of these three big producers in the global scenario for dried grapes, together
they account for almost the 60% of total exports.
2.3 Consumption
2.3.1 Fresh grape consumption (Appendix L and M)
In 2011, 207.7 Mql of world human consumption of fresh grapes is observed, a 4.4%
increase over 2010. This level can be qualified as high, +23.5% over the 2001-2005 average
of 168 Mql.
• Asia is still the leading grape consumer, with 127.9 Mql of table grapes consumed, an
increase of 7.3% compared to 2010 figure. Of this, China accounts for 65.2 Mql, Turkey
for 16.4 Mql, Iran for 14.5 Mql and India for 10.9 Mq.
• Europe follows with some 39.8 Mql consumed, maintaining almost the same level
registered in 2010. However it should be noticed that the period 2006-2009 has been
characterized by a consumption level steadily around 41 Mql while consumption in 2010
and 2011 is back to the levels of the period 2003-2005. Such a lower level is imputable to a
drastic decrease in domestic demand especially in Italy, by far the biggest European
consumer country, which witnessed a reduction of almost 1 Mql from 2009 to 2011.
• Next is North and South America, with 20.5 Mql consumed in 2011 remaining quite
stable, even if slightly lower, compared to the previous years. The little difference is due to
the lower consumption levels recorded in Peru and USA in 2011 with respect to 2010.
• Then comes Africa with 18.5 Mql, a level similar to that of 2007, showing a decrease over
the 2010 consumption of -9.4%.
• In Oceania, human fresh grape consumption is limited, with 1017 mql, a significant
increase compared to 2010 figure (+46.5%).
Expressed as average per capita in 2011, individual human consumption of fresh grapes
per year is highest in the Balcans where Albania (54.7 kg/hbt), Bosnia-Herzegovina (46.9
kg/hbt), FYR of Macedonia (44.2 kg/hbt) and Slovenia (41.8 kg/hbt) exhibit very high
consumption levels compared the world average. This consumption level is between 20 and
25 kg/hbt in Syria, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Iran. The Americas and Oceania are
still the continents with the lowest fresh grape consumption per capita.
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
19
2. GRAPES
It should be reminded that these are apparent consumption levels, most obtained from
balance sheets. Therefore, they quite likely confuse the proper consumption of fresh grapes
with consumption for domestic winemaking purposes (e.g. Rakia 1).
2.3.2 Dried grapes consumption (Appendix N and O)
In 2011, 12.6 Mql of world human consumption of dried grapes (6.7% over 2009), which
is one of the highest level of consumption reported since 2000 (the highest being 2010 with
12.8 Mql)).
• While Asia is by far the leading producing continent, it is not the leading consumer:
Europe posted consumption of 4.9 Mql, a decrease of 2.9% over 2009. The main domestic
market in Europe remains the United Kingdom, followed by Germany and Russia. This
drop is mainly due to the decrease in domestic consumption of Russia, Greece which
together reduced their dried grapes consumption by 238 mql.
• Asia is then the second largest consumer, with 3.8 Mql, increased by 7% over 2009. This
is mainly attributable to the significant increase in consumption witnessed in Turkey.
• Asia is followed by North and South America which recorded 3.1 Mql (+10% over
2009). In this context, variations in the level of dried grapes consumption are strongly
influenced by the relative weight of the USA which accounts for 65.8% of the domestic
market of the two continents in 2011, the largest national domestic market in the world.
• Next is Oceania (0.5 Mql consumed) and Africa (0.3 Mql consumed). Oceania and Africa
show different trend between 2009 and 2011: while the former increased by 7%, the latter
drop by 8%.
Expressed as an average/hbt in 2011, individual human consumption of dried grapes
per year is highest in the Netherlands (2.4 kg/hbt). Next are Greece (2.3 kg/hbt), United
Kingdom (1.8 kg/hbt), Iceland (1.5 kg/hbt) Ireland, Danemark and Lebanon (1.3 kg/hbt).

• In 2011, Africa reaches a total production of 11 Mhl, an increase compared to the 2010
production level (+ 5, 4%). The growth was almost exclusively owed to South Africa that
increased its production from 9.3 million hl in 2010 to 9.7 million hl, though this was lower
level than the 2008 recorded volume, which topped 10 million.
• North and South America reached the 51 Mhl of wine production in 2011 (always
excluding juice and must), an increase of 435 khl over 2010. This continental evolution
results mainly from the considerably rose of the Brazilian production from 2.5 million
hl in 2010 to 3.5 million hl in 2011, returning to positive figures after the drop of 2010, and
the record harvest in Chile of 10.5 Mhl (+18.3%, + 1.6 Mhl over 2010). The USA with
19.2 khl excepting juice and musts, recorded a relatively modest wine production in
2011, down 10.3% on 2010, and Argentina, after the very high level production of 2010,
as well as known significant decrease with – 4.8% over 2010.
• Asia continues to see its wine production growing under the main influence of the
estimated Chinese production. The continental production reached in 2011 the 15 Mhl of
wine production (+342 khl/2010: +2.3%); 200 khl of this growth are produced in China 1.

This assessment of Asian production is based on theoretical production of wine (and marginally,
raisins) from that portion of Chinese grape production not intended for table consumption. The

• Europe with total wine production (excepting juice and musts) of 176.4 Mhl,
despite the increase of 1% over 2010, this production can again be described as
low. Compared with 2010 production, the most significant quantitative decrease
was recorded in Italy, which saw its 2011 wine production fall by nearly 6 Mhl
compared with 2010 (-12%). Portuguese production (-21%), and to the Spanish
production, also fell respectively by 1.5 and 2 Mhl. Conversely French production
grew by 6.3 Mhl (+14%), as the German production in 2011 were normal and
Romanian production (4 Mhl) recovered without however attaining its level before
the disastrous harvest of 2010 (the 2009 and 2010 harvests respectively totalled 6.7
and 3.3 Mhl).
• In Oceania, the Australian production continued to decline, struggling to pass
the 11 Mhl mark, and New Zealand production posted a record harvest of 2.35
Mhl.
assessment is provided by the FAO. This is therefore a surplus-based approach, since total grape
production is not used to produce wines according to the OIV meaning of the term, but also to produce
fermented drinks from fruit juice mixes, or direct grape distillates. However, the lack of precise
statistics on the type of processing these grapes undergo, as well as the recent of wine statistic
compilation in China (2003) make this approach particularly suitable, since its advantage is that it does
not create a statistical gap.

3. WINE
After 4 consecutive years where Italy had been the first world producer, in 2011 France
returned to being the leading wine producer country. Other noteworthy elements are Chile’s
advance in position; and the emergence of New Zealand in the top 20 wine producers.
3.2 Trade in wine (Appendix Q and R)
The global wine market, considered here as the total exports from all countries reached 103
Mhl in 2011, which is +8% / 2010 thereby confirming the upturn in world trade observed
between 2009 et 2010: 95.9 Mhl, the 2010 figure (+9.6%) against 88 Mhl in 2009.
Accordingly the crisis has undoubtedly played its part in intensifying the trend, already noted
last year, whereby the proportion of trade in bulk wine is growing. The corollary of this is that
trade is becoming increasingly complex, with a growing proportion of re-exports, inter alia in
transcontinental trade.
Total world imports also increased by 7.4% over 2010 to reach the 98 Mhl.
3.2.1 Wine imports
•
•
•
•
•
Africa reached the 2.9 Mhl of wine imports in 2011, (+13% /2010), thus returning to its
2008 level. Angola, Ivory Coast, and South Africa remain the main traditional importers in
the continent.
North and South America sees a continued upward trend in imports, the two sub
continents reaching 16 Mhl, +4.6% increases over 2010. The USA, with 10.2 Mhl
imported in 2011 (+10.1 % over 2009), confirm their place as the world's third largest wine
importer.
Asia continues to see its imports rise in 2011 to almost 8 Mhl (+16% over 2010).
Numerous countries have experienced increases particularly China that sees its volume of
import increases in the last years of almost +111% over 2009.
Europe, by far the leading continent for imports with 69.7 Mhl in 2011 (+7% over 2010
and + 15.4% over 2009). This was notably due to the relative increase in Hungary (which
went from 181 khl in 2010 to537 khl in 2011), in Romania (908 khl in 2011, +305% over
2010), Spain (703 khl in 2011, +73.6% over 2010), Greece (+89.7% over 2010). Imports
continue to increase in the United Kingdom, the world's second largest importer by
volume, (13.2 Mhl, or +3.4% over 2010), and in Germany, which remains the world's
leading importer, were up 9.2% over 2010, standing at 16.1 Mhl.
Oceania, at 1.2 Mhl, continues to show increase in its import figures. It is the increase in
Australian imports which is at the origin of this rise with +11.4% over 2010.
3.2.2 Wine exports
As indicated above, exports have grown significantly over the last year, by 8% more than
the previous season.
In 2011, global exports of wine represent approximately 42.8% of global consumption
(against 36% in 2009). From this we can take heart that there is a steady trend throughout
the last few years to constant growth in international transactions in the context of
stability in the global consumption, a sign that the drop in consumption by the traditional
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
27

producing countries is being compensated by the increase in countries whose wine needs
outstrip their own production, meaning that they, in turn, have to import it.
•
Africa export slightly decreased over 2009, and attaining the level of 3.7 Mhl (4.3%). The economic crisis has had the effect to decrease by 423 khl over 2009 the
continental exports. The cause is mainly the lower of South African exports (3.6 Mhl, -4.3%
over 2009).
•
North and South America sees the total volume of their export drop by 3.5% in 2011
(13.8 Mhl). This decrease is mainly the consequence of the drop of the leading exports of the
Americas, Chile with -14.6% over 2010 (6.2 Mhl). Argentina and USA continued their
growth, respectively +13.5% (3.1 Mhl) and +5% (4.2 Mhl) over 2010.
• Asia, a modest exporter saw its export level rise again (to attain the 0.7Mhl).
• Europe wine exports increased overall, reaching the level of 76 Mhl (+13% over 2010),
or 74% of world export in 2011. As mentioned above the overall increase of exports
wine is involving the shipments of bulk wine. This growth at the continental level is due
to the growth posted by the main exporters: Spain registered a significant growth in
volume with + 30.7 % over 2010, to attain the 22.4 Mhl; those of Italy with 23.2 Mhl (+
8% over 2010); France and Portugal with respectively 14.7 Mhl and 3 Mhl.
• Oceania has decreased its exports and reached 8.6 Mhl in 2011 (- 673 khl, -7.3% over
2010) due mainly to the lower export of Australia (-800 khl over 2010).
3.3 Wine consumption (Appendix S and T)
In 2011, world consumption of wine reached the level of 244 Mhl, a slight increase of 1.6
Mhl compared to 2010. After a peak at 255 Mhl in 2007, wine consumption went down but
with the stable figures of 2010 and 2011 the downward trend seems to be stopped.

• Africa with 7.6 Mhl showed a new increase of 5 % compared to 2010. A growth in
the domestic demand has been recorded in Algeria (+30%/2010), Angola
(+9.2%/2010), South Africa (+1.8%/2010) and Tunisia (+10.7%/2010).
• North and South America, at 53 Mhl (+1.2%% over 2010) see their consumption
levels rise. This is mainly due to the continued growth in the USA (28.4 Mhl, +3%
over 2010), the world’s second biggest wine consumers.
• Asia, with 21.8 Mhl of wine consumed (+7% over 2010), is the third largest wine
continental consumer. China 1 continues to be the main growth driver of the
continent reaching 16.3Mhl (+7.6 % over 2010). Also to be noted the growth of 5%
registered in Turkey, and in Japan where the consumption continues to rose
reaching the 2.8 Mhl, a growth of 6.8% over 2010.
• In Europe consumption continues to decline: with 155.8 Mhl of wine consumed
remain by far the leading consumer continent (64% of world consumption in 2011).
The main European consumers are showing a tendency to decrease consumption
compared to the previous years: stability in French consumption (+0.49 Mhl, albeit
after a sharp fall of 1.3 Mhl between 2009 and 2010), the stability in German
consumption and the slight fall in Spanish (-1 Mhl), British (-0.4 Mhl) and
Portuguese (-0.1) consumption in 2011, Italian consumption dropped sharply by
about 1.6 Mhl.
• In Oceania, with a level of more than 6 Mhl of wine consumed, saw its
consumption level growth slightly but at a lower rate than the previous years (-1%
over 2010).
With regard to the average individual human consumption of wine per year, this
has been falling for decades, especially in southern European countries, where
changing consumption habits (increased outdoor drinking, substitution of others
beverages) affect overall demand. Meanwhile, wine consumption is fast rising in
Asia.
1
This is apparent consumption in China, as obtained from the balance sheet (estimated using
FAO data) by looking at "Production + Imports - Exports". This quite likely leads to the
assimilation with wines of other beverages made with grapes (including distilled beverages,
since there is no accessible data on wine processing). Other non-official assessments derive
this quantity from the sales of wine-producing companies, in the OIV sense of the term.
However, the thoroughness of these data is unknown, and taking them into account would
cause a break in the statistical series (since statistics were not compiled for wine per se in
China until after 2003). These assessments bring quantities down by one half, since bulkimported wines are generally included with wines produced from Chinese grapes in the figures
of bottled-wine sales of these major companies.

3. WINE
Wine in China is increasing, with individual consumption growing 39% between
2002 and 2011 (although the multiplying factor of the country's demography should
not be discounted). It should also be reminded that this apparent consumption
partially includes fermented grape-based products incorrectly categorised as wine as
well as, quite likely, brandies.
France has the world's highest per capita wine consumption, drinking 46.4 litres per
year but down 20% from 2002 (Appendix T). Luxembourg has one of the highest per
capita wine consumption but these figures are difficult to interpret given the
reasonable assumption that non-resident purchases have a major impact on the
apparent result.
Per capita consumption has dropped substantially in the traditional wine producer and
consumer countries such as France, Italy and Spain. High levels of individual
consumption are logically found in those countries that are traditional producers of
wine.
There has been a notable increase of individual consumption since 2002 in Georgia,
7.4 l/hbt to reach 21.4 l/hbt in 2011. Russia and Ukraine continue to show growth in
individual wine consumption levels, reaching respectively 7.9 l/hbt and 6.9 l/hbt
respectively in 2011 (respectively an increase of almost 80% since 2002).
In North America, it also increased, reaching 9.2 l/hbt in the USA and 12.4 l/hbt in Canada in
2011.
In new wine-producing countries, where production potential has recently increased,
individual consumption, for example in Australia has reached 23.3 l/hbt and in New Zealand
has reached and 2 l/hbt in 2011, an increase respectively of +14% and 28% compared to 2002.
Finally, in non-wine producing countries, there is generally a growing trend in
individual consumption. For example, 2011figures for the following countries show
an average increase: Netherland (22.7 l/hbt), United Kingdom (20.5 l/hbt), Belgium
(27.1 l/hbt), Norway (15 l/hbt).

Stocks (Appendix U)
The analysis of global wine stocks (at the property or in markets) are difficult at
world level because of the lack of systematic, regular data, and secondly due to a lack
of data on the extent of industrial use.
However, given that for both the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 harvests we have
information available on countries representing 78% of world wine production in
2011 and 77% in 2010, it may be logically inferred that global wine stocks at the end
of the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 campaigns are in general at the same level, or
slightly higher, than those at the beginning of the same campaign for all countries
monitored.
In macroeconomic terms, this trend is consistent overall with the modest increase in
world wine production between 2010 and 2011 (+3 Mhl, or 1.1%) in front of the little
increase of world consumption (around 1.5 Mhl or 0.6%) and logically induced small
increase of distillations of wines. However, as indicated for previous years, it should
be reminded that a macroeconomic “line of reasoning” is not available for all
countries and segments of market: if stocks increase in Argentina, France and South
Africa, they decrease in Italy and Germany.
3.3.1 Other commercial uses
Also in this area data are not yet available for all countries. For example, data on distillation is
only available for a set of countries accounting for 64% of world wine production in 2010.
It is worth noting, however, that on the EU15 market, approximately 15.7 Mhl in 2009/10
and 11.6 Mhl in 2010/11 (against 19.6 in 2008/09, 13.4 Mhl in 2007/08, 21 Mhl in 2006/07,
26.0 Mhl in 2005/06, 22.4 Mhl in 2004/05 and 24.8 Mhl, 20.3 Mhl and 22.8 Mhl respectively
in 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2003/04) were used for the production of wine distillates and
dregs (including the volumes used to make brandies with geographical indication). Note
however that it should be added to this amount nearly 8.6 Mhl in 2009/10 and 9.5 Mhl in
2010/2011 for the same market (against 6.1, 3.8 Mhl, 3.4 Mhl, 5.2 Mhl, 5.5 Mhl, 3.9 Mhl and
4.5 Mhl respectively from 2002/03 to 2008/2009) of wines for the other industrial purposes
such as vinegar and vermouth production.
OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011
31
3. WINE
Outside the EU15, we have 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 data on wine distillation only in
Argentina and South Africa, as well as Romania for a total of some 1.5 Mhl both in 2009/2010
and in 2010/2011. Data concerning vinegar and vermouth production are available only for
Argentina (85 khl in 20009/2010 and 114 khl in 2010/2011). By taking together distillation
and other industrial uses of wine we get a total of approximately 25.8 Mhl of wine for
industrial purposes in 2009/10 and 22.7 Mhl in 2010/2011 (compared to 22.1 Mhl, 27.8
Mhl, 31.2 Mhl, 28.3 Mhl, 32.5 Mhl, 31.9 Mhl, 33.0 Mhl and 27.2 Mhl respectively between
2001/2002 and 2008/2009, for a set of comparable monitored countries for which data was
gathered).
The results of last campaigns indicate that the level of industrial uses (distillations,
vinegar and vermouth productions) is lower and lower, perhaps just around 30 Mhl
(between 28 and 32 Mhl). And this against figures established for the previous campaign at
between 30 and 35 Mhl for example for 2006/07 (for 2005/6 it was 35 to potentially 40 Mhl;
for 2004/5 and 2003/4 it was 33 to 38 Mhl of wine for industrial purposes, as compared to
approximately 32 Mhl for the previous campaign, slightly more (around 35 Mhl than 2001/2,
but
around
40
Mhl
in
2000/01).

CONCLUSIONS
Non-fermented products
The market for grape juice and non-fermented intermediate products remains, like last year,
hard to define and limit, there has still been no substantial improvement monitoring of musts
by the various national statistics committees. However, an attempt may be made to analyse
overall management data for these industries on the world level.
Previous analyses indicated that the percentage of total grape production intended for
purposes other than pressing has been slowly increasing (on average by 28% for 19861990, 29% for 1991-1995, 30% for 1996-2000, and 35% for 2001-2005 and 37% for the last
known five-year period, 2007-2011). The percentage of production used for fresh
consumption has increased more quickly than the percentage intended for raisin
production (75% on average for 1986-1990, 73% on average for 1991-1995, 75% on average
for 1996-2000, 79% for 2001-2005 and 81% for the last known average for 2007-2011).
The 2011 results continued this trend, with the percentage of total grape production used
for purposes other than pressing nearing 37.7%, and the percentage of production
intended for table consumption nearing 81% as for 2009 and 2011. Overall, considering
that 135 kg of fresh grapes are needed to obtain 1hl of wine, the percentage of world grape
production which was pressed but not fermented (i.e. musts or juices concentrated or nonconcentrated) for the campaign under consideration may be determined by subtraction 1.
Thus reconstructed, and taking into account 2% of waste of grapes, there is an upward trend
in the percentage of world grape production used to make non-fermented products,
despite a recent setback due to the need to replenish wine stocks after the poor productions of
2002 and 2003 in a context of important development of international trade (3.0% on average
1986-1990, 5.6% on average 1991-1995, 7.6% on average 1996-2000 and 6.2% on average
2001-2005, and 7% for the last known average for 2007-2011). This is clearly the effect of the
weak harvest.
It should also be reminded that, as every year, although some products are not all intended for
sale as for example the "buffer" stocks used to enrich future harvests, the size of this market,
as well as any potential changes to its regulatory framework (especially in customs matters, to
eventually define the non-preferential origin of products with the WTO) reinforce the need to
collectively improve monitoring.
1
In the past the world average was established at 138 kg/hl, however advances in dreg filtering in some
countries have apparently brought this production ratio down.

CONCLUSIONS
Wines
Due to a higher production level (+3.Mhl) and a slight increase in wine consumption
(+1.7 Mhl), the world balance is higher in 2011 than in 2010. The fall in global wine
consumption that began in 2008 seems to have reached its lowest level in 2009 and it looks
like a new positive trend started in 2010 (+1% with respect to 2009), a growth confirmed by
2011 data (+ 0.7% over 2010). For what concerns wine production, a fairly marked decline is
recorded in 2010 (-7.9 Mhl) while in 2011 the world level raised by 3.2 Mhl reaching 267.4
Mhl.
Thus the gap between wine production and consumption in 2011 was approximately 23 Mhl,
very far from the averages registered in the period 1980-2005 but in line with the average of
last 5/6 years. The 2011 gap is lower than the traditionally assessed needs for traditional retail
industrial purposes (i.e. production of brandies, vinegars and vermouths).

OIV Vine and Wine Outlook 2010-2011

CONCLUSIONS
These countries may be classified into 3 groups:
1. Countries with important domestic market, but still with a high level of import. This
group comprehends Germany, the USA and China (gap between wine production and
consumption carried over to production levels: in 2011 -116%, -48% and -24%
respectively). These three countries, however, are very different in terms of openness to
international trade. While the USA, which kept its position this year as third-largest
importer and 6th-largest exporter, is quite open to the world market, China is not. This
tends to confirm the tendency in China to supply the domestic needs 1.
2. Net exporting countries, whose domestic markets are declining but which remain major
outlets. France and Italy, and Argentina, are in this group (production-consumption spread
between 37 and 46%). Nevertheless it should be highlighted that the downward trend in
domestic consumption pushes these traditional wine-producing countries to either reduce
their potential production or turn increasingly towards exports.
3. Predominately export countries (at least a 50% spread between production and domestic
consumption): South Africa (64%), Australia (53%), Chile (71%) and Spain (70%). It
should be noted that in these countries a non-negligible part of the discrepancy between
production and consumption is locally transformed into alcohol and that a non-negligible
portion of this alcohol is subsequently consumed.
For the second year, the development of the European Union vineyard has been
affected by the implementation of new community regulations.
2010 and 2011 wine production, like that of 2007 and 2008 are one of the lowest
productions in the last fifteen years, particularly in the European Union.
There is a marked stop in the decrease resulting from the crisis that we can reasonably hope is
the sign of a return to the pre-crisis trend in world consumption, namely a fairly steady
moderate growth.
The economic crisis has certainly contributed to the upward trend of an increasing
amount of trade in bulk wines, already recorded last year. This also leads to trade
which is increasingly complex, where the share taken by re-exports, particularly in
trans-continental trade is growing.
______________________
1
With the exception of the reserves indicated above, and taking into account the fact that the
quantity of domestically-produced wine in a given wine region believed to be Chinese cannot
be precisely known, given the difficulties in tracking wines imported to China, via Hong Kong
especially.
