The feedback from last year’s IPPE experiences was very positive, and we look forward to another great year. Students are required to have 7 site visits of 4 hours each to their assigned Community pharmacy for the Fall and again for the Spring semester. We are providing you with some suggestions of activities you can ask your IPPE student to perform while they are with you: Process new and refill prescription orders Interview patients to obtain information and create a patient profile Prepare and compound products Train patients on blood glucose meters or inhalers Participate in antibiotic call-back programs Have student create a Patient Satisfaction Survey and distribute to customers Have student design an endcap surrounding a relevant topic (ex: cold and flu season) Let students review written prescriptions to familiarize themselves with actual prescriptions Review a Pharmacy Board/state law with the student & discuss legal issues relevant to community pharmacy Participate in drug ordering (ex: complete a Form 222) Thanks again to all our wonderful preceptors who are training the pharmacists of tomorrow! What is Service Learning? Renee Murray, OEE’s new Director of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) recently explained the concept of Service Learning to the incoming Class of 2013. An excerpt of her presentation is provided here to alert our preceptors to our ongoing interest in Service Learning opportunities. Service Learning is an ongoing program of student involvement in activities that meet the needs of the community and instill a service ethic into experiential education. Students learn about social issues and how to apply their knowledge to address real problems in the community. Each year as part of the IPPE requirement, P1, P2 and P3 students must complete 20 hours of Service Learning by volunteering in an activity that involves direct patient care. Direct patient care Service Learning activities include participation in projects with free clinics, homeless/indigent care clinics and senior living facilities, health promotion programs, health screenings, medication safety programs, and immunization events, and similar activities. According to the 2007 Accreditation Standards put forth by ACPE, Service Learning should: meet a community need; establish or enhance a relationship between the community and the academic institution; help foster civic and professional responsibility and the development of a sense of caring for others; provide structured time to reflect on the service learning experience; enhance what is taught in the didactic curriculum by extending student learning beyond the classroom and into the community; provide opportunities for interaction with other health professional students and practitioners; and attempt to balance the service that is provided and the learning that takes place. Students benefit from Service Learning activities in the following ways: It provides the ability to use the skills and knowledge learned in didactic coursework. It provides the ability to interact with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. It fosters civic and social responsibility. It prepares students to become competent professionals and significantly contribute to the health of society in one or more meaningful roles. If you are aware of Service Learning opportunities in your community, please contact Renee at 804-628-8268 or [email protected]. 6 EMS CORNER SPECIAL NOTE FOR PRECEPTORS WITH PATIENT-CARE ROTATIONS! HAVE YOU APPROVED YOUR STUDENT’S DRPs IN EMS ??? DRUG-RELATED PROBLEM (DRP) INTERVENTION DOCUMENTATION Students in patient care rotations are required to use the EMS system to record drug-related problems (DRPs) encountered on rotation. Students will be expected to document approximately 25 drug-related problems per rotation. After the student enters the problem into EMS, the preceptor must then go into EMS to review and approve it before the student can get credit. The process is described below: PROCESS for PRECEPTORS 1. Preceptors enter the EMS system and select Patient Drug-Related Problems from the menu on the left side of your Affiliate Profile screen. 2. On the next screen click on Drug-Related Problems View. 3. Your student’s DRP intervention(s) will appear as their initials followed by # 1, # 2, etc. for each intervention submitted. Click on the student’s initials to open the intervention. 4. Review the intervention, provide feedback to the student if you wish, and click on the Approve button to send it to the database. 5. If you would like to keep a copy for your files click on the Print button. Approximately 25 interventions per patient care rotation should be documented by the student. STUDENT PHOTOS AND RESUMES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE All students (with the possible exception of the new P1s, who are no doubt working diligently on this project) have entered their resume into EMS and those resumes are available online to each of the student’s assigned preceptors. To see the resume of your student, enter EMS and click on Rotations in the left-hand menu of your Affiliate Profile. Beside each student’s name there is an R button under the Resume column. Click on the resume button to view the student’s photo and resume. The Print button is at the bottom of the resume. Other tools available on your Preceptor Rotation List include a button you can click on to activate e-mail to the student, and an online Absence Form you can use to notify OEE when a student is absent from rotation. Please contact OEE if you have any questions about any of these functions. DO YOU HAVE ONLINE LIBRARY ACCESS? One of the benefits of being a preceptor is access to the MCV/VCU library systems online. If you are an active preceptor and do not yet have this access, please contact us at [email protected] to request a Personal Data Form. You will provide required information on this form, which is in turn used to set up a secure account for you in Human Resources. You will then be provided with a Banner ID number and instructions to use to gain online access. Contact us today! 7 NONPROFIT ORG U. S.
