Welcome Conference Delegates!
CCSBE is delighted to be working with
CEED and St. Francis Xavier University
to present the 2014 Annual Conference.
I think you will be surprised and delighted
by this new conference format. The
fresh and revitalized approach that our
conference hosts are providing for us this
year will get us moving about, meeting new
people, having discussions and revelations
in new and unusual spaces.
This is an entrepreneurial conference about entrepreneurship. It
is strategizing, planning, risk taking, experimenting, re-thinking
and re-jigging, all in the space of three days. CCSBE has been in
the process of re-invention for the past two years and the Board
is working hard to be current, valuable and innovative in our
offerings. This year the thought becomes the plan and the plan
becomes the practice. We are out to learn, to gain insight, to make
new connections, and I certainly hope that you are with us every
step of the way.
Thank you to CEED, St. Francis Xavier University, the Town
of Antigonish, our board members, our members, visitors,
presenters, sponsors and supporters.
I hope you all enjoy!
Sandra Altner, President,
Canadian Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship

CCSBE 2014 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Simplify the Journey
Welcome to Antigonish!
It’s my pleasure and honour to welcome you
to Nova Scotia and the national CCSBE 2014
Annual Conference. At CEED, like CCSBE, we
are in the business of education, listening and
learning. Our team strives every day to simplify
the journey for entrepreneurs and help to create
a vibrant entrepreneurial culture. That’s why
we were so excited to win the bid to host this
conference and stage it in a rural community
with our partners, St FX and CCSBE. If you
haven’t experienced it yet, Antigonish is an amazing community with a
long tradition of self-reliance stemming back to Moses Coady himself.
Because we are all about learning and reflection—we looked back on
what we have learned as we planned for these three days with you.
We learned there are high-calibre research projects focused on small
business and entrepreneurship taking place around the world. We are
pleased to have many of those researchers here to share their work
and findings. We’ve learned government, community leaders, youth,
retirees and post-secondary organizations are keenly interested in
how we can simplify the journey and encourage more individuals
across Canada to consider small business as a viable career option.
We’ve also learned entrepreneurs are very busy people working
at their business. This conference offers them a unique chance to lift
up and learn tangible ways to strengthen and grow their business from
experts themselves.
Our goal is that the conversations we have together continue after you
go back to your schools, businesses, and homes. Dialogue means people
are engaged and when people are engaged around this topic, we can
transform communities and lives.
Thank you so very much for making the journey!
Heather Spidell, President and CEO,
Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development (CEED)

SPECTACULAR DISTRACTIONS
ARE PAR FOR THE COURSE.
Cabot Links
When you create an authentic seaside
links course on Cape Breton Island, with its
spectacular scenery and some of the most
beautiful water hazards you can imagine, it’s
no surprise that it quickly becomes ranked
amongst the world’s top golf destinations.
This rugged course is nestled along the Cabot
Trail, a stunning ocean highway that winds its
way from sea to sky.
Discover breathtaking vistas you’ll remember
for a lifetime on this and other spectacular
routes throughout Nova Scotia this summer.

2014. BDC teamed up with the Canadian
Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) to find
Canada’s top business mentors. Awards

Gary Bizzo
“I like to think there are two prerequisites that are no brainers when
it comes to deciding whether or not you take the leap from that cozy,
no-end in sight, badly managed, dead-end job to your new business
endeavour. Sure you’ll soon be wondering where your next contract
will come from or when your next customer will walk through the
door of your shop; but you will be self employed.
The two considerations are Passion and Timing!
Ahh, a mouthful and a lot of considerations you think and you are
right. OK, I’ll get to Passion and Timing in a minute. Realistically
do you have the knowledge to start your own business, the finances,
a USP (unique selling point), the necessary skill sets? These are the
basics but you still need passion and timing.”
Excerpt from Gary’s book: “How to Start A Successful Business The First Time”

“If I was a young entrepreneur today I
would break the pattern.”
Gijs van Wulfen
Gijs on innovation:
1. In the long run a company cannot survive on doing the same
things better and cheaper.
2. Most managers are like dogs. They bark at what they don’t know.
3. Managers say yes to innovation only if doing nothing is a
bigger risk.
4. Continuous innovation is bullshit. You only innovate when you
have to.
5. Organizations frustrate innovative employees.
