Newsletter no. 2
Chères Amies,
Dear Friends,
How are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions?
notre association.
One of my resolutions is to encourage the different ‘national’
groups of Femmes d’Europe to work together this year in
organising multicultural events, which is the essence of our
Association.
Another resolution is to help organise an unforgettable gala in
the Cirque Royal on Wednesday 20th April. The Netherlands
holds the presidency of the EU Council of Ministers for the
12th time this semester. In this context, our Dutch group
organises an evening with the very well reviewed
INTRODANS ballet from Arnhem: a first in Brussels. From
mid January, tickets will sell like hotcakes, we hope.
So don’t wait, get a group of friends and go together.
Ma troisième résolution ? Faire de notre quarantième
anniversaire un tremplin vers l’avenir.
My third resolution? To make our 40th anniversary a
springboard for the future.
There is a famous saying in one of my favourite books, ’The
Leopard’ by Giuseppe Tomasi de Lampedusa: ‘If we want
everything to remain the same, everything must change.’ My
free translation: ‘if we want our Association to continue its
good work, we need to encourage change’.
Personally, I am convinced this is the way forward if
we want young(er) women to join us and eventually
take over.
Il me reste à remercier chaleureusement tous nos
The Executive Bureau is in the process of setting up
discussion groups that will look into ways to shape
our evolution. We want to revive the idea of
computer lessons which will allow heads of groups,
the projects committee and others to work more
efficiently. We are restructuring our website as an essential
communication tool. Mind you, we certainly do not wish to
change things that function well: our Christmas Bazaar and
many of our events are good examples.
A couple of interesting events are on offer in the following
weeks: on the evening of February 2, at the elegant Résidence
de France, Françoise Longin will give a conference on Chinese
revolutionary prints. On February 19, we will dance to the
tunes of the Belgian Swing Quartet after an excellent dinner by
the ‘starred’ chef of the ‘Sucrerie’ in Waterloo.
Last minute information: to celebrate our 40th anniversary we
will have the pleasure of getting together on March 17, for an
exceptional Easter Bazaar in Beaulieu ! Our thanks go to the
Commission for their support.
Finally, a warm thank you, first to all the photographers at our
Christmas Bazaar 2015, and in particular André Tackoen for
his lovely film which brings back the cheerful atmosphere and
shows the enormous amount of work done by all.
And a huge thank you to all of you- for your work and
tenacity.

novembre dernier.
La demande de formation étant toujours plus
importante, l’Association Femmes d’Europe a aidé à
la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment. Femmes
population.

Ballet in
the Netherlands:
young
and
successful
Earlier, in 1959, the contemporary dance
company Netherlands Dance Theater (NDT)
was founded by Benjamin Harkarvy and
others, together with several members of the
Netherlands Ballet. Their intention was to
break away from the more traditional forms of
ballet as performed by the National Ballet.
NDT, based in The Hague, focused on new
International ballet history dates
back to the 17th Century and
developed especially in France and
Russia. The ballet tradition in the
Netherlands is much younger, but
no less successful. For several
years now Dutch ballet companies
have been performing at top world
level.
Of eminent importance for the
evolution of ballet in the
Netherlands was Russian born
Sonia Gaskell, who danced with the
Ballets Russes from 1927–1929 and
Les Ballets de Paris, where she
served
as
director
and
choreographer, until 1939 when
she moved to Amsterdam with her
Dutch husband. She established and served as
director of several companies including the
Netherlands Ballet and the Netherlands Ballet
Academy in The Hague. Among Gaskell's
students were Audrey Hepburn and noted
choreographer Hans van Manen. Sonia Gaskell
also served as the first artistic director of the
newly formed Dutch National Ballet (Het
Nationaal Ballet) in Amsterdam from 19611969.
The Dutch National Ballet is the leading ballet
company in Amsterdam. It was established in
1961 when the Amsterdam Ballet and the
Netherlands Ballet merged, and the company
is now known for its high technical and
artistic level. The company attracts many
international artists. It is a regular guest at
major festivals across Europe. The National
Ballet performs an array of classic-romantic
and neo-classic ballets and is also committed
to new choreography.
Introdans: ‘Polish Pieces’ – photography by Hans Gerritsen
ideas and explored and experimented with
new forms and techniques of dance. In the
1960s the NDT’s repertoire combined classical
dance with strong elements of American
modern dance. Under the guidance of
noteworthy
artistic
directors
and
choreographers such as Hans van Manen and
Jirí Kylián, the NDT proved to be both
nationally and internationally successful. The
NDT received several important awards.
Rotterdam also has its own ballet company,
the Scapino Ballet, named after the character
in the Italian Commedia dell’Arte. Established
in 1945 by dance teacher Hans Snoek and
artist Nicolaas Wijberg and originally intended
for children and the young, it has now evolved
into a trendsetter in dance in the Netherlands
and Europe.

Introdans
captures
its unique place
in Dutch Ballet
Since its early post war
beginnings,
the
epicentre of ballet in
the Netherlands was
located in the western
part of the country.
Arnhem, on the eastern
side, had its Dance Academy. One of the students was Ton
Wiggers, who in 1971, together with Hans Focking, established
the first ballet company in that part of the country. The new
company, later named Introdans, focused on activities for a wide
local and regional audience. Hard hit for money, Wiggers at first
financed the performances from the proceeds of teaching
activities.
The turning point in these financially difficult early years was the
provision in 1980 of structural funding by the local government.
For the young ballet company this led to further
professionalisation and consequently to artistic recognition. In
1984 the group received the Theatre Critics’ Award for the
innovative role it was playing within the Dutch ballet scene.
Since then the company has steadily built first a national and
then a global reputation and it is now considered one of the
most important ambassadors for Dutch dance abroad.
Introdans performs ‘modern-classical’ ballet that is ‘accessible,
stylish and attractive to all – preferably with a little glamour and
extravagance’. It offers a rich repertoire of both existing
favourites by renowned choreographers and exciting new
creations and it invests in talented young choreographers and
dancers. The company is regularly invited to accompany the
Royal House on state visits. The performance by Introdans in
2006 during the state visit of Her Royal Highness the former
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is
one of the highlights.
The Gala performance on 20 April 2016 is the Brussels première
of Introdans. In the programme are Orbo Novo’ (2009) by Sidi
Larbi Cherkaoui and ‘Polish Pieces’(1995) by Hans van Manen.
The Organising Committee is delighted to present, on the
occasion of the Netherlands EU Presidency 2016, two
outstanding examples of modern ballet, one by a Belgian and
the other by a Dutch choreographer, both of great renown.
Introdans consists of three pillars: the main Introdans
ensemble, Introdans Ensemble for Youth and the Introdans
Interaction education department. Both of the dance ensembles
undertake theatre tours in the Netherlands and abroad, presenting
appealing shows performed by sublime dancers.
Its education department providess workshops, participatory lessons
and projects at schools, in theatres in the Netherlands and abroad.
Artistic director is Roel Voorintholt, general director Ton Wiggers.
H.R.H. Princess Margriet of The Netherlands is Introdans’ patroness.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
The internationally acclaimed
Belgian-Moroccan choreographer
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui studied with
the P.A.R.T.S. Academy of Anne
Teresa De Keersmaeker and was
influenced by American hiphop
and jazz dance companies. A
prolific
choreographer
and
theatre maker, he participated in
productions for a large number of
art houses. Since September 2015
he has been the artistic director
of the Royal Ballet Flanders in
Antwerp, and he is the recipient
of several awards. For the ballet
‘Orbo Novo’ Cherkaoui drew his
inspiration from the feelings of
freedom,
confinement,
connection and loneliness that
New York, or the ‘New World’
(Orbo Novo), evokes in him.
Hans van Manen
The exuberant and colourful
ballet ‘Polish Pieces’ is by the
Dutch choreographer Hans van
Manen. He began his career in
1951 as a member of Sonia
Gaskell’s Ballet Recital and danced
with the Roland Petit company in
Paris.
From 1960 he worked first as a
dancer, then as a choreographer
and artistic director with the
Nederlands Dans Theater. He later
joined Het Nationaal Ballet as a
choreographer. Creator of more
than 120 ballets, all carrying his
unmistakable signature of clarity
in structure and a refined
simplicity, Van Manen is known as
the “Mondriaan of dance”. He
has been awarded numerous
prestigious
national
and
international awards.

effroyables attentats de la ville de
Paris, le programme du récital de
piano proposé par la jeune prodige
Sabine Weyer aura su nous
amener à retrouver au plus
profond de notre âme, le sens
véritable du mot humanité. Après
les mots touchants de notre
présidente
Bernadette
Ulens
accompagnés par un brin d’histoire
musicale avec Rolande Margot, le
concert débuta dans l’humilité avec
la suite pour clavecin en La mineur
de Jean Philippe Rameau.
Dans son exécution des œuvres de
JP Rameau, Sabine Weyer aura
très fidèlement retranscrit la
pudeur du compositeur français.
Le raffinement de son toucher dans
Debussy, la passion de son âme
dans Brahms et la créativité dans
ses Liszt; voici ce que nous eûmes
la chance de partager tous
ensemble grâce au remarquable
talent de cette brillante artiste.
Tandis que les notes s’achevaient,
la réflexion naquit en nos âmes
réchauffées par tant de beauté.
Le concert fut suivi d’un cocktail
dînatoire
dont
les
saveurs
éveillèrent en nous mille et un
parfums de plaisir. Dans l’amitié et
le respect envers la tragédie du 13
novembre, la soirée se termina
dans le silence, telle la musique
après un concert.
Une réussite qui aura été pour
nous, un prélude aux périodes de
fin d’année.

The 150th Anniversary
of
Jean Sibelius
Brussels - 7 December 2015
Finnish group
The
KAMUS
Quartet
The venue was Laeken, not the Royal Palace
but the European School IV - almost as large
and as impressive as the Palace! This school is
on the premises of the former “Ecole des
Cadets”, complete with many buildings, wide
open spaces, columns and broad stairways. The
Finnish Group of Femmes d’Europe had invited
us to a concert celebrating the 150-year
anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius
(December 8, 1865), Finland’s greatest
composer. On the day before, Finland
celebrated its Independence day - December 6,
and one of the musicians had his birthday on
December 7, so really three celebrations in one.
There was a queue at the gate, we had to show
our ID cards, be ticked off on the list of
attendees, and then given a badge to wear.
Nobody minded this since, in these turbulent
times, security is so important. More than 110
persons had decided to venture out to this
venue, not the most familiar to many of the
Femmes d’Europe members. However, even
getting a little lost finding the school, it was
really worth it!
After the short welcome speeches by Marjatta,
the Finnish Group leader, Bernadette our
President and the Finnish ambassador, Mr.
Timo Ranta, the KAMUS Quartet took the
stage.
It consists of four young Finnish musicians who
met at the Sibelius Academy in 2002 where
they were all students. The two violinists, Terhi
Paldanius and Jukka Untamala, were already
married to each other at the beginning of their
studies, and they were later joined by Jussi
Tuhkanen,
a
viola-player,
and
Petja
Kainulainen, a cellist.
The first part of the concert was devoted to
some small and not well-known pieces, with
each one introduced in a humorous way by
Jussi Tuhkanen. However. the performance
itself was highly serious and the harmony and
the timing between the players were superb!
During the intermission we were shown an old
short movie from Sibelius’ home life with his
wife and two of his daughters, on walks and at
work at the piano; all extremely nostalgic and
fascinating.
The second part of the concert was devoted to
one piece - the String quartet in D Minor opus 56
“Voces Intimae”-. Sibelius wrote this piece in
1908-1909 and, as the subtitle indicates, this is
a profoundly intimate work, with quite sudden
changes of mood and rhythm, reflecting a
rather difficult period in his life. The KAMUS
Quartet gave us a memorable interpretation.
The Reception afterwards was catered by the
Embassy’s chefs, and there was more wine and
juice than we could possibly wish for.
We could also purchase a CD made by the
group, which includes the string quartet in Dminor and some other modern Finnish works.
On departure the friendly security guards
showed us the way out, wishing us a very good
evening, and it really was a VERY GOOD
EVENING! Congratulations to the Finnish group
and also many thanks to the Finnish Embassy
and all the other sponsors for making this such
a memorable event.

Our members take care of those in need...
The association and its members have the mission to serve those in need and specially women and
children. Femmes d’Europe has more than 800 members, from all countries around the world.
This is impressive and we can be proud of this.
Our members, with their many differences, dedicate a lot of time to help and serve women by
supporting their projects, worldwide. This takes time and demands strong efforts and great
energy.
Our members need to be sometimes taken care of...
We must not forget to strengthen solidarity and humanity amongst the membership and Femmes
d’ Europe should not turn a blind eye to our members needs. With this in mind, we wish to create
a new area, a haven where we can take care of our ladies and bring support to our members, when
need be.
One of Bernadette’s wishes for years to come is “to make our 40th anniversary a
springboard” for the years ahead. We are not proposing an ambitious challenge but just a
“friendly way” -with no financial costs-. With this project in mind, we have a tool to build close
and effective relationships between our members.

to foster bridges of solidarity
