Menu Footnotes
1: Hot Dogs... Matt’s hot dogs have been certified by
four independent national agencies (including the FDA) to
actually increase a persons’ ability to pick up chicks. There
is a direct correlation between the number of hot dogs you
eat and the number of chicks that you pick up.
2: Classic Chicago Dog... The same hot dog made
famous in the song “Stairway to Heaven.”
3: New York Dog... Note that we don’t call this a New
York “style” dog. This New York Dog is actually from New
York. We pay three college students to drive to New York
every Thursday and buy a whole laundry hamper full of fully
cooked dogs from street vendors. They are usually back
here by Sunday, so for the freshest New York dogs please
visit us no later than Monday afternoon.
4: Slaw Dog... If you know what grits are; if you’ve ever
been to the Piggly Wiggly; if you’ve ever been given
lagniappe; danced to beach music; lost your house to a
hurricane three years in a row; or have impeccable manners;
then you know what this dog is.
5: Burgers... Our burgers are so good that McDonald’s
actually offered Matt five million dollars to take it off the
menu. However, Matt’s is all about integrity and food
quality. Matt informed McDonald’s that he would not
accept their offer. Matt also told them that he was offended
that the offer was so low.
6: Cheeseburger... If you’ve been away from
hamburgers so long that you don’t know what a
cheeseburger is, then maybe the whole hamburger thing is
too complex for you... may we suggest the plain dog.
7: Bacon Cheeseburger... The same burger made
famous in the movie “Billy Jack.”
8: Spiking a burger... a term that originated in
ancient Greece. During the original Olympic games, Greek
runners, upon finishing the marathon, would stop by local
burger joints and ask for their burgers to be “spiked.”
9: Veggie Sausage... We grow all the vegetables for
this sausage right behind the hot dog stand. Join us (and
the other vegans) for “pick your own” night on Thursdays.
10: Spiking”french fries... a term that originated in
the Rain Forests of Brazil, when native aborigines would
relax after a long day and enjoy french fries, often asking
the person making them to “spike” them.
11: Shakes... Our shakes are not triple thick...they’re
actually “4.63” thick, which is technically 54% thicker than
our competitors – hence, they are at least 54% better.
However, we are not charging you 54% more – so, when
you think about it – you’re actually ripping us off.
History of Matt's
As a young man growing up in Southern
California, Matt Jones became enamored with a
local hot dog stand located in the San Fernando
Valley. His dad used to take him there and, while
sitting on the outside counter of the stand, the
two would eat their favorite meal. Matt would
often tell his friends that someday, he too would
own a hot dog stand. While Matt’s friends talked
of becoming architects and doctors, Matt talked
about hot dogs. Sometimes, Matt’s friends would
say “Can’t we talk about something other than
hot dogs?” “Ok,” Matt would say, “let’s talk
about the buns that you put them in.”
After graduation from high school in 1979, Matt
headed off to college. He attended Brigham
Young University and studied business. During
his senior year, Matt took a course in
Entrepreneurship. Students were required to
create a business plan as part of their final
project. Matt’s was on a Hot Dog stand. After
earning a degree in finance in 1985, Matt was
accepted into the graduate school of business at
the University of Southern California. Before
receiving his MBA, Matt completed another
business plan on a Hot Dog stand.
Upon graduation from USC in 1987, Matt pursued
a career in mortgage banking. He joined a firm in
downtown Los Angeles and began financing large
commercial real estate projects. While crunching
numbers and wearing business suits, he couldn’t
shake the dream of starting out on his own,
selling hot dogs. In 1991, after almost five years
in downtown LA, Matt and his family decided to
sell it all, pack up the car, move to Seattle (his
wife’s hometown), and follow his dream of starting
a Hot Dog stand.
It took about a year of searching, but Matt finally
located the original Matt’s in the Georgetown area
of South Seattle. It opened on June 11, 1992.
Since that time, Matt has served many a happy
customer. And the dream of the Hot Dog stand
lives on!
