Martin & Weyrich Winery’s head start in California’s Paso Robles region allowed this boutique winery to explore wine in a unique, pioneering way. After looking throughout California for good and affordable vineyard land, four families united by marriage began the venture on April 1st, 1981 with their purchase of 83 acres in this region located mid-way between San Francisco and Los Angeles. As one of just five or so wineries in the region, their venture was perfectly situated on Hwy. 46, a popular route for travelers. In 1998, David and Mary Weyrich (formerly Mary Martin) bought out the other families and with their eight children took over full operation of the winery. Today, four of the children are active in the winery: Terese manages the office and bookkeeping; Andy (a graduate of Fresno State’s enology program) oversees the estate vineyards; Katy handles California sales; and Tim, who recently worked harvests in New Zealand and Australia, helps in the cellar. These extra shipments of amazing wines come out 4-6 times per year. See page 12 for details. n o i t a l l e App S W E N A Recipe From Martin & Weyrich Like wine in a bottle, appellations can change. They can be created, revised, proposed, denied and contested. There can be little Civil Wars going on in the wine country over appellation status. Here is some of the latest news about California’s official winegrowing regions: • Wineries in and around Calistoga in the Napa Valley can now add “Calistoga” to their wines. Further, no winery can bear the name of “Calistoga” unless its wines are produced from Calistoga grapes. This is a huge decision for winemakers, since most want to retain a place name to identify where the grapes were grown. Federal regulators spent six years deliberating before granting Calistoga appellation status. A winery in Calistoga, named Calistoga Cellars, that makes wine from fruit not grown in Calistoga, fought appellation status tooth and nail. Calistoga Cellars now has three years to start producing wines from Calistoga grapes; otherwise, it must change its name. Federal regulators spent six years deliberating before granting Calistoga appellation status. This pivotal decision now means that when Calistoga is on the bottle, the grapes for that wine were grown there. It is a win for consumers (who now know what they are getting) and a win for winemakers (who can now make the most of their appellation’s reputation). In Our Email Bag “The best thing about The California Wine Club (besides the wine) is the wonderful group of wine consultants!!” —Tom Curling, VA Page 4 Gorgonzola Fig Pizza “This is a great winter time pizza that is best served with our Martin & Weyrich Sangiovese,” says Winemaker Craig Reed. “The strong earthy flavors of the Gorgonzola, figs, balsamic vinegar, prosciutto and arugula on this pizza are complemented by the dark fruit and earthiness of the Sangiovese. Enjoy!” Ingredients: Cornmeal (for sprinkling) 1 1-pound package purchased pizza dough 2 cups (generous) crumbled Gorgonzola cheese (about 8 ounces) 6 small fresh figs cut into 1/4- to 1/3-inch-thick slices 2 Tbsp fig balsamic vinegar, divided 8 thin slices prosciutto (from two 3-ounce packages) 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 8 cups arugula Preparation: Preheat oven to 450°F. Sprinkle large rimless baking sheet generously with cornmeal. Roll out dough on floured work surface to 12x10-inch rectangle; transfer to prepared sheet. Sprinkle Gorgonzola over dough. Sprinkle with pepper. Place figs in medium bowl; drizzle 1 tablespoon vinegar over. Set aside. Bake pizza until crust is golden brown on bottom, 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately drape prosciutto slices over, covering pizza completely. Arrange fig slices atop prosciutto. Bake until figs are just heated through, about 1 minute. Transfer pizza to cutting board. Whisk remaining 1 tablespoon vinegar and oil in large bowl; add arugula. Sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss to coat. Mound salad atop pizza. Cut into pieces and serve with your Martin & Weyrich Sangiovese. Saluté! The California Wine Club® · www.cawineclub.com · (800) 777-4443 Martin & Weyrich Continued from page 3 International Parade Though Martin & Weyrich started out making standards like White Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, David and Mary’s love of Italian wines led them to bottle Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio (our CWC selections). They were the first to plant Nebbiolo in the region and they have created a signature Italian wine, Moscato Allegro. Not too far behind was an international parade of M&W bottlings, from Bordeaux to Burgundies, with a couple of Spanish wines in the mix, too. Personal preferences, market targets and the requirements of their terroir all have helped to shape this winery’s unique stable of Central Coast wines. A Boy & His Barrels Among the leaders of this M&W wine parade is winemaker Craig Reed. His mother worked for the family for 20 years in its other business (an outdoor signage company), so when the winery needed an extra hand, Craig was there. “I grew up at the winery!” he laughs. In 1988, he began working in the tasting room. Craig helped to organize events and gained an intimate knowledge of Martin & Weyrich vineyards, then, was mentored in the cellar by winemaker Nick Martin, who earned an enology degree at U.C. Davis. Craig also took numerous courses at U.C. Davis for four years. The result was 90+ scores from the Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast magazines for three of his first wines and “Winemaker of the Year” from the San Mateo Times. Craig has traveled the wine regions of France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy and is a frequent attendee at VinItaly, a huge wine show. Hanging out at the winery paid off! The California Wine Club® · www.cawineclub.com · (800) 777-4443 Page 5 Martin & Weyrich Continued from page 5 Rounding Up the Flavors Assisting Craig in his efforts to make premium wines are estate vineyards in three premium San Luis Obispo County appellations. In addition to the 83-acre estate at the winery, holdings include 100 acres on Paso Robles’ cool eastside and the Jack Ranch Vineyard in the Edna Valley, also very cool and renowned for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. No matter what the kudos for his cellar expertise, Craig knows that wine is truly made in the vineyard and is constantly alert to how the vines shape the wines. “Our Sangiovese (CWC’s selection) was a simple, light bowlful of cherries when we first made it,” explains Craig. “But as our vines aged, there was a big shift from bright fruit to darker, earthier characters. So, our Sangiovese is now a much more serious wine.” Regional Revolution Approaching its 30th year, Martin & Weyrich has learned a thing or two about the Paso Robles region. “Since 1981, it’s been quite a ride. In the late ’80s, Paso Robles was known as a place to get coffee and fill up the gas tank on the way to L.A. or San Francisco,” notes Craig. Today, there are 200+ wineries and many new, young winemakers with fresh ideas. “There are many people making wine here on a much smaller scale that can afford to experiment,” Craig notes. Back in the day, Martin & Weyrich was an experiment all by itself, a winery in a secret wine region that could, and did, make its mark in California Wine Country. Enjoy the delightful results at Martin & Weyrich, 2610 Buena Vista Drive, Paso Robles, CA 93446 (corner of Hwy. 46 and Buena Vista Rd.), (805) 238-2520. Salud! For racehorse fans, there are Seabiscuit and National Velvet. Classical music lovers have Amadeus, ballet enthusiasts watch The Red Shoes, golfers settle in with Tin Cup. Now, finally, we wine lovers have a roster of movies to pour. Here is the rundown. Popcorn with your Merlot, anyone? Bottle Shock (2008) Sideways A father/son rivalry, romance and the famous 1976 Paris Tasting merge in this enjoyable film that depicts how Chateau Montelena wines beat the French in a legendary blind tasting. It catches the ambiance of California wine country before the crowds… (2004) As the funniest movie on our wine marquee, Sideways is the chronicle of a fractured wine country weekend. A goofy friend persuades his wine connoisseur buddy to take a trip to Santa Barbara wineries for a “boys’ weekend” before goofy gets married. Passion, panic, pandemonium and Pinot Noir, not necessarily in that order! And big trouble for Merlot… French Kiss (1995) A Walk in the Clouds (1995) Keanu Reeves and Anthony Quinn star in this romance set amidst the backdrop of a family winery. Father disapproves of the romance, until Keanu rescues the family’s last remaining vine from a vineyard fire… An uptight American (Meg Ryan) is on a mission to win back her straying fiancée when she is caught up in a smuggling scheme with a rogue Frenchman (Kevin Kline), who turns out to be a sincere lover of wine. The California Wine Club® · www.cawineclub.com · (800) 777-4443 Mondovino (2004) This documentary mourns the globalization of winemaking and the overwhelming impact of critic Robert Parker on winemaking style worldwide. It features interviews with wine brokers and winemakers in seven countries and three continents. Visit www.gmon.com and click on Silly Tasting Notes. Here’s a taste: “Unimpressive and middle-aged Voignier. Drops pixie stick, focused jack cheese and forward slim jims. Drink now through April.” “Overaged but equally desperate Cabernet Franc. Forcefully bites you with saltine, extra-ripe hair-spray and perceptible cactus. Drink now through Friday.” Page 8 Where: Within California’s large Central Coast American Viticultural Region (AVA), in San Luis Obispo County, midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. What: An AVA comprising approximately 614,000 acres and nearly 30,000 acres of vines. Terroir: Paso Robles has two very distinctive areas: the eastside and the westside. The eastside is more inland and warmer. Think cowboy boots and Zinfandel. The westside is nearer the coast and cooler. Think seaside villages (like Cambria and Harmony) and Pinot Grigio. Wines: The most-planted grape is Cabernet Sauvignon. Zinfandel has long been a star in Paso Robles and its Rhone and Italian wines are standouts. Many reds here. “...perceptible cactus… drink now through Friday!” UNCORKED® is published monthly by Bruce and Pam Boring, Proprietors. These wine lovers generate more than $2.1 billion in annual revenue for the state of California. The economic benefits of the California wine industry include the creation of 820,000 jobs throughout the U.S. economy. Wineries are also adding to the economic boost by devising more and better ways to save energy. Well, now growers can get coverage protecting their vines from heavy ice, freeze, hurricane, fire, sleet, snow, lightning, explosion, flood, vandalism, riot and more. Damage from smoke is also covered, and this is important considering the fires that ravaged California wine country recently. Though federal crop insurance is available to protect growers from the loss of their grapes, this the only vineyard insurance that covers damage and it is only offered so far by just one company.
