An initiative of NetWaste SIMS Metal is the proud sponsor of the Waste To Art project in the NetWaste Region. SIMS Metal and NetWaste continue to enjoy a productive working relationship and together celebrate the tenth year of Waste to Art within the NetWaste region. SIMS Metal has been involved with Waste to Art since its inception and has been delighted in the continued success and growth of the program. This novel and innovative waste education initiative is a powerful way of encouraging our community to think a little differently about how we generate and dispose of waste. The Waste to Art Program is a fantastic example of the philosophy “think globally - act locally”. Sims Metal and NetWaste work together on a number of programs which includes the recycling of many thousands of tonnes of scrap metal annually from regional NSW that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. This service provides enormous environmental benefits as well as significant funding in rebates back into participating communities. We would like to again congratulate all of the team at NetWaste, at participating Councils, the contributing artists and the wonderful volunteers who work so well together to deliver such a fantastic project to the community. Waste to Art – 10 years old!!!! The Waste to Art Competition in the NetWaste Region of NSW celebrates ten years of activity this year. The concept of an art and craft competition using available waste material as a medium was already in practice in other areas when Environmental Learning Officer Sue Clarke initiated it in our region in 2004. This resulted in the first Regional Exhibition at Mudgee in 2005. The nature of the competition makes it available to all age groups and sectors of the community. The care of our fragile environment is a strong topic of discussion and interest from school kids to pensioners Dubbo City Council are to be congratulated for hosting the regional exhibition for the second time. Some larger regional galleries are yet to realise the benefits of the wider audience Waste to Art attracts. The opportunity to present something outside the square encourages more of the community to enjoy the art experience. Thank you to NetWaste and Kent and the team at Western Plains Cultural Centre for their support in creating another successful exhibition. Enjoy your visit. Artist: Trunkey Public School Location: Trunkey Creek Title of work: “Trunkey Tribe Totem” Category: Primary 3D These totems have been constructed from recycled materials including painted tin cans, fabric swatches, buttons, broom, rake and mop. After being inspired by local Trunkey artist Selby Warren’s artworks painted on recycled materials, the students decided to create functional sculpture. Artist: TJ Henderson Location: Forest Grove Title of work: “The Leaf Book” Category: Primary Functional My book is made from handmade paper, and bound with jute. I made the paper from leftovers in our paper scraps box, and added leaves from the feijoa bush. I used a whole leaf on the cover and other leaves I crushed up in the paper. Artist: Lili Carter Location: Bathurst Title of work: “The Flight of the CD’s” Category: High School 2D The inspiration for my artwork was from a stack of old Cd’s that were going to be thrown out. COONAMBLE Artist: Coonamble Public School 1/6F Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Totem Poles” Category: Primary 3D Artist: Henry McIntyre Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Car Trip” Category: Primary 2D My artwork was inspired by a car trip I went on with my family. It is made out of used paper & cardboard. These artworks were created as part of a school community project at Coonamble Public School that focused on building environmental awareness and the use of ‘waste’ products. The end result were artworks that could be displayed outside in the school yard. The clay coils are recycled and found objects from various locations. Artist: Samantha Stratton Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Memory Catcher” Category: Community 2D The materials used in this project were sourced from my surroundings: Old gum branches, left over keys and embroidery. I used these materials as a way of weaving together, both in a literal and figurative sense, the objects that surround me and my life as a tapestry of memories. Artist: Toby Jones Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Big Bull” Category: Community 3D My work is constructed from a gas cylinder, an old tricycle seat, springs, nuts, a plough disk and other metal bits I found. I decided upon creating a bull when I found the tricycle seat. To me it looked just like the face of a bull. Artist: Marion Murray Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Bull Leg Tab;” Category: Community Functional This table is made using old cattle bones as the legs and a mosaic table top made of recycled materials. The table was created as a way of really challenging what you could create from alternate materials that are considered ‘waste’ but are not commonly found in your garbage bin. Artist: Valda Hooper Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Pig” Category: Open 2D My artwork is made up of used old corrugated iron. I used a laser cutting technique to allow the pig to emerge. Artist: Margie Pye Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Floating Reflections” Category: Open 3D I wanted to make something beautiful from discarded cans and make a statement against the waste we sometimes don’t see but which is all around us. Materials used include: left over tie-wire, bases of aluminum cans, glass beads, nudge bar, scrap steel rod, an old plough disc and a circular from a 1970s hammock chair Artist: Anna Kaineder Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Basket Case” Category: Open Functional This artwork was inspired by a weaving workshop I took part in and made from a series of hoses that my dogs had chewed their way through. The frame is made from repurposed steel and the ties from rope found on the side of the road. Artist: Alison Dent Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Anchored” Category: Building or Sculpture 3D Artist: Alison Dent Location: Coonamble Title of work: “Not the Yellow Brick Road” Category: Building or Sculpture Functional This artwork has been created using an old steel anchor chain and a large hook from a mine. The beautiful links would have been ruined by welding so I decided to show off this amazing and very heavy piece by hanging it on this very large hook. This functional artwork has been created using a discarded concrete trough, old broken tiles and scrap metal tins filled with succulents. The path makes quite a colourful statement and is low maintenance. DUBBO Artist: Cody Tickle Location: Geurie Title of Work: “Laying Time” Category: Primary 2D I used an old picture frame and some foam and glued it together. I crushed up egg shells and glued them to the foam in the shape of a chook and her eggs. Artist: Ashleigh Mills Location: Dubbo Title of work: “The Beautiful Sunflower” Category: Primary 3D This beautiful sunflower will brighten up any garden and it won’t need much water as it is made from common plastic waste that can be found around the house. Two paint tin lids make up the leaves and an old wooden handle acts as the stem. The bottle top lids make perfect sunflower seeds. Artist: Phoebe Shearman Location: Ballimore Title of work: “The Buzzy Potty Mobile” Category: Primary Functional Artist: Jackson Scott Location: Dubbo Title of work: “Grand ‘Father’ Christmas” Category: High School 3D This old potty doesn’t get used much anymore so Phoebe has turned it upside down and it has become a fun mobile complete with cute little critters made from all sorts of stuff that would have been thrown away. This imaginative Christmas tree will never die. It is made from common waste items that many of us would have lying around: wire coils, rusted star pickets, shovel heads, an old open ended spanner and a variety of aluminium cans. Artist: Josh Giddings Location: Ballimore Title of work: “Barney the Crocodile” Category: High School 3D Barney is a reptile made from a problem waste that we would all have seen littering creeks and roadsides. The old tyres make the perfect material for my creeping reptile named “Barney”. Two orange bottle tops complete his look as eyes. Artist: Josh Giddings Location: Ballimore Title of work: “Tyre Garden Furniture” Category: High School Functional This design for my garden furniture is a common sight in a number of popular holiday destinations. Waste is viewed differently in these countries and as you can see these tyres make the perfect building materials. Artist: Veronica Hyland Location: Dubbo Title of work: “Plastic Petals” Category: Community 2D What a fantastic plastic garden!
