An initiative of NetWaste
SIMS Metal is the proud sponsor of the Waste To Art project in the NetWaste Region.
SIMS Metal and NetWaste continue to enjoy a productive working relationship and together
celebrate the tenth year of Waste to Art within the NetWaste region. SIMS Metal has been
involved with Waste to Art since its inception and has been delighted in the continued success
and growth of the program.
This novel and innovative waste education initiative is a powerful way of encouraging our
community to think a little differently about how we generate and dispose of waste. The Waste
to Art Program is a fantastic example of the philosophy “think globally - act locally”. Sims
Metal and NetWaste work together on a number of programs which includes the recycling of many
thousands of tonnes of scrap metal annually from regional NSW that would otherwise have ended up
in landfills. This service provides enormous environmental benefits as well as significant funding in
rebates back into participating communities.
We would like to again congratulate all of the team at NetWaste, at participating Councils, the
contributing artists and the wonderful volunteers who work so well together to deliver such a
fantastic project to the community.

Waste to Art involves two interlinked components, local
exhibitions coordinated by Council and/or community members,
and the Regional Waste to Art Event, hosted by a different
council every year. This Community Art Program has always
been, and will continue to be, an organic program in that
it has been modified over time in response to feedback gained
from participants and coordinators.

Regional Exhibition, in particular Michael McCulloch and Steve
Clayton who have been active supporters of the Waste to Art
project since it began. This year our Regional Exhibition will
be showcased at the amazing Western Plains Cultural Centre and

great examples in this year’s exhibition.
The Waste to Art Competition in the NetWaste Region of
NSW celebrates ten years of activity this year. The
concept of an art and craft competition using available
waste material as a medium was already in practice
in other areas when Environmental Learning Officer
Sue Clarke initiated it in our region in 2004. This
resulted in the first Regional Exhibition at Mudgee in
2005.
The nature of the competition makes it available
to all age groups and sectors of the community. The
care of our fragile environment is a strong topic of
discussion and interest from school kids to pensioners
Dubbo City Council are to be congratulated for hosting
the regional exhibition for the second time. Some larger
regional galleries are yet to realise the benefits of the
wider audience Waste to Art attracts. The opportunity
to present something outside the square encourages more
of the community to enjoy the art experience. Thank you
to NetWaste and Kent and the team at Western Plains
Cultural Centre for their support in creating another
successful exhibition. Enjoy your visit.

This artwork has been created using an old steel anchor chain
and a large hook from a mine. The beautiful links would have
been ruined by welding so I decided to show off this amazing and
very heavy piece by hanging it on this very large hook.
This functional artwork has been created using a discarded
concrete trough, old broken tiles and scrap metal tins filled
with succulents. The path makes quite a colourful statement
