At the very first class you sat in on you noticed that Ropeti was shy about his writing and held his note pad on his lap. After that class I saw a real change and Ropeti felt a lot more comfortable, he was sharing in class and no longer kept his notebook hidden. Ropeti went on leave…his father passed away so he returned to Samoa for the funeral. With everything going on, he was away from work for quite some time and missed a lot of classes. When I talked to him on his return about organising catch up he was really to throw in the towel as he felt he was too far behind. Both myself my verifier, reassured him that we would support him and help him to catch up. When he gave me his book this week I was really surprised because the majority of it was complete. When I talked to him about it he said he’d remembered what you’d said about using your own language to make it easier to learn, so he set up time with some of our Samoan staff who have taken the course previously to help translate the parts that he wasn’t familiar with. He also got support from his wife and other past trainees from within his team and well and truly caught up. During our recent team brief we recognised Ropeti in front of the whole DC for doing such a fantastic job and being so committed to his training. A real proud moment and one I just felt I needed to share with you! Peer mentoring 10 What next?
