Pass through
the gates of Cal-a-Vie Health Spa,
tucked into the rolling hills of Vista, Calif., about an hour
north of San Diego, and life as you know it stops. Four
hundred glorious acres surrounded by hills of fragrant
lavender, citrus groves and vineyards make this Euro-style
retreat the perfect place for a most memorable wedding.
In a setting that evokes the splendors of Provence,
France, the retreat has been luring health-conscious
travelers from across the globe for nearly three decades.
With its power-packed fitness programs, luxurious touches,
5-to-1 staff-guest ratio, nutritious and delicious cuisine, and
opportunity to disconnect from technological reach, there
are few places as tranquil, pampering and transformative.
Thirty-two villas are furnished with French antiques
and decor hand-selected by owners Terri and John Havens,
who divide their time between their abode overlooking
Cal-a-Vie (where they sometimes host cocktail hour for
guests) and their primary residence in Houston. All guest
rooms feature beds dressed with fine Frette linens; newer
suites have TVs; and the recently remodeled Garden Room,
open to all guests, has several computers. Cal-a-Vie also
boasts world-class fitness facilities, a labyrinth pool, an
Olympic-size pool and a spa bedecked with Louis XVI
tapestries. Golfers can play at the adjacent Vista Valley

Country Club and private, 18-hole Ted Robinson-designed
championship golf course, also owned by the Havens.
Award-winning Executive Chef Curtis Cooke’s focus
is on fresh regional produce, unprocessed whole grains,
fresh fruits and vegetables, essential fatty acids and lean
proteins. Menus change seasonally, often daily, based on
what Cooke finds in his flourishing chef ’s garden.
A destination wedding at Cal-a-Vie resembles a
normal stay at the property—only more festive and fully
focused on you and your loved ones. A three-day minimum
and property buyout provide couples, their families and
their friends with exclusive access to wellness programs,
fitness classes, luxurious spa treatments and nutritious
gourmet cuisine. Tireless Cal-a-Vie wedding planners
ensure a stress-free big day, including an unforgettable
ceremony in the candle-lit 17th century chapel with
stained-glass windows; and a fully customized reception in
the mystical L’Orangerie with 16th century stone fireplace,
zinc-topped antique walnut bar and 8,000-square-foot
terrace overlooking the grounds. Both venues were
imported from Dijon, France, and reconstructed, stone
by stone, on the property.
