Term 1 Progress Report
News from the
‘BEARS’ DEN
4313-39th Street
Bonnyville, AB T9N 2R1
Wednesday Oct. 24 was “WE DAY!” Ten students from grade 7/8 who are all a
part of the C.H.A.N.G.E. committee, along with Mrs. Worthman, Ms. Brosseau and
other Northern Lights students and staff went to Calgary. More than 16,000
students filled the Saddledome. “We Day” is an educational event aimed at
motivating young people to volunteer and make a difference in their community.
In this inspirational setting, students learned about many local and global issues.
Celebrities like Magic Johnson, Nelly Furtado, Shawn Desman, Kardinal Offishall,
Karl Wolf, Amanda Lindhout, Craig & Marc Kielburger, Kenyas Boys Choir, were just
a few of the inspirational speakers.
With the close of our CCRP magazine fundraiser, we are happy to report over
$3,000 raised! This will go towards our library as well as presentations, guest
speakers, and many other unique opportunities for our students.
The grade 8 Halloween fun day went well Thursday, Oct. 31. Students enjoyed a
costume parade, haunted house and numerous games and activities all planned
and implemented by our grade 8 students. This is a great community service
project for our grade 8 student that our whole school looks forward to.
Friday Nov. 1 was the wrap-up for “Chrome your Dome” cancer
awareness and fundraising event. Our school raised over $3,500 and two
students shaved their heads along with three staff members in support of
the cause. Thank you to five high school students who helped in our
fundraising efforts, raising over $1000.00 in a bake sale, candy guessing
contest, and auction.
For three days in October, our students who were enrolled in our French Language
and Culture Academic Option and students who identified themselves as Métis had
the opportunity to participate in three days of French and Métis language and
cultural activities. Our school applied for a grant through The Alberta Foundation
for the Arts and we were successful, receiving $5000.00 to bring Les Bûcherons
(from Sherwood Park) to H.E. Bourgoin to have students participate in cultural
activities.
Students had the opportunity to learn the Métis Red River Jig, Line Dance, Round
Dance, and Square Dance, play wooden spoons, dancing men and the Métis native
Flute, learn about the Métis Medicine Wheel and listen to traditional storytelling
and sing traditional songs. The week also included all of our students participating
in Cabane a Sucre (candy on a stick) and a final presentation with our French and
Métis students showcasing their learning over the three days.

Parents,
for taking the time to
call us when your child
will be absent from
school,
STUDENT ATTENDANCE:
The Alberta School Act (sections 13 and 14) states that, “every child must be in
attendance at school and maintain an acceptable pattern of attendance.”
Northern Lights School Division No. 69, Procedure 330 regarding the expectations of student
who are registered in their schools is available on their website.
H. E. Bourgoin Middle School Philosophy: Staff members at H. E. Bourgoin Middle School
require that students attend school every day in order for the students to achieve at their
potential. Because student attendance is a priority, the staff carefully monitors attendance
and holds students and parents accountable for good attendance.
Absences: Parents/guardians or parent representatives are asked to phone the school
office between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to inform the school that their child will be late or
absent for all or part of the day. If this information is not received by 9:00 a.m., the
student’s absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence. In the event of an unexcused
absence, an effort will be made to contact the parent/guardian or parent representative.
The homeroom teacher will make the first contact and if unsuccessful, then by office staff.
A student’s absence shall be considered excused for the following reasons: Personal
Illness; Serious illness in the family; Quarantine under the direction of a country or town
health officer; Medical, dental, optometrist, or chiropractic appointments (when they cannot
be arranged prior to the start of the school day or after school hours); Attendance at funeral
services; Appearance in court; Attendance at weddings; Observation of a holiday or
ceremony of his/her religion.
Note: When a group of students is on a field trip, classes will be held for the remainder of the
students who are in school. Small classes are an excellent opportunity for review and enrichment learning activities. Students are expected to attend classes as per their daily schedule.
Please see our parent/student handbook, in your child’s agenda or on our website under
downloads for our complete policy and procedures regarding attendance.

Hello Everyone! It is such an Honor to be here at H.E.Bourgoin School.
I would just like to let everyone know about the Student Advocacy
Counselling Program. As a Counselor ,I can help students to understand
and cope with social, emotional, and personal challenges. I listen to students and work with
them to find a solution that works for them. I also teach problem solving skills such as making
good decisions, standing up for yourself, managing stress, talking to your parents, relationships,
friendships and dealing with anger and other difficult moods - and it is all confidential! Have
questions and would like to talk, stop in and see me.
Mrs. Turchyn, Student Advocacy Counselor
