‘Nanma’   The word “Nanma” in English means “Virtue” or “Goodness”.   Nanma is a novel initiative by Mathrubhumi in association with VKC Group to promote the value of virtue among the younger generation through the schools in Kerala.   There is always goodness in this world and this initiative is aimed at bringing out the good deeds to the attention of people and motivate them to do their part . Any social welfare activity aimed at the betterment of our society is a part of Nanma Initiative. Mathrubhumi-­ The 2lag bearer of social change   Since inception, Mathrubhumi has played a significant role in the social, economic, cultural and environmental issues of India particularly Kerala. The name of “Mathrubhumi” was well associated with various National movements in connection with the freedom struggle and social reformation movements. In 2014 Mathrubhumi introduced a new initiative…… ‘NANMA’ Nanma Initiative   Nanma Initiative launched in January 2014 is aimed at bringing out the good deeds and virtues to the attention of the society and to promote a value driven generation by motivating school students.   Mathrubhumi is associating with a leading footwear manufacturing group, VKC Group of Companies for this novel initiative.   6754 Schools across Kerala is a part of this initiative. Nanma Squads   Every school under the Nanma project is having a Nanma squad comprising of 30 to 50 students who are leading the various social welfare activities of the school. Nanma – Results in a nutshell  12 houses were built as part of the initiative for the poor.  Hundreds of medical camps, blood donation campaigns and other social initiatives were conducted as part of Nanma.  More than Three million rupees were used to help the needy; in the forms of medical support, educational aid and financial support etc.  Hundreds of medical camps, blood donation campaigns and other social initiatives were conducted as part of Nanma. NANMA IMPACTS Some of the main activities conducted as part of NANMA Initiative out of the 1993 activities carried out by the schools across Kerala are.. Nanma Impacts Providing Shelter   It is estimated that one among every 100 people in Indian cities is homeless.   As part of Nanma Initiative students build houses for 12 homeless families across the state of Kerala. This shows the commitment of the young generation towards the cause of Nanma.   The story of a young boy, Mr. Gireesh MH from Pathanamthitta district is one of the shining example which made Nanma a platform for social change. To help his two homeless friends Mr. Kannan and Mr. Karthik, Mr. Gireesh donated 5 and 3 Cents respectively from his family's property of 20 cents to both his friends. Supporting elder generations   Growing urbanization and decrease in agricultural activities has resulted in the decline of joint family system which in turn resulted in the erosion of family values and bonds between generations.   The older generation is caught between the decline in traditional values on one hand and the absence of adequate social security system on the other.   Nanma has given utmost priority to support the elder generations and to bridge younger and elder generations with social values and respect.   Activities like visiting old age homes, pension schemes, providing medical support to the old, Grand parents summits etc were conducted to bring the two generations together.   Hundreds of people in their old ages were given support and conducted regular visits to their homes to alleviate the pain of being alone in old age. Grand parents meet conducted by Nanma club of Vidyadhiraja School, Vendaar. These initiatives helps to bring together the generations. Students from various schools visiting old age homes and interacting with the inmates. Medical aid   Diseases and illness leads to heavy financial burden on the people affected. For the financially backward sections of the society; the cost of health care results to various socio-­‐cultural issues like poverty, homelessness, financial debts etc.   As part of the Nanma Initiative more than a million Rupees were distributed as medical aid to the needy. Students of S.D.D.U.P.S, Mekone handing over Rs. 115,000 for the cancer treatment of Mr. Aromal, a student of the school. Students of Govt. HS, Kollam handing over a cheque of Rs. 156,275 to the family members of Mr. Abhishek, a 9th standard student who needs liver transplantation. Awareness Campaigns   Various awareness campaigns were conducted by the schools in the fields of public health, traffic awareness, blood and organ donation promotions etc.   As part of Nanma Vendaar village in Kerala has become the first complete blood donating Village. 100% Blood donating Village   Vendaar village in Kollam district has been declared as the first complete blood donating village in Kerala by the authorities.   The Nanma club of Vidyadhiraaja school, Vendaar conducted a 15 days long Blood donation awareness campaign and collected blood samples of all the people in the village and created a directory of blood groups of each and every person in the village.   They also created a blood donating group with the people eligible to donate blood with in the age group of 18 years to 50 years.   These students conducted 102 blood group detection camps in the village alone by collecting samples of more than 3000 villagers and volunteer group of 1500 people to donate blood. Arimbur Higher Secondary School from Thrissur district collected a large sum of money to provide medical support to a student suffering from a rare disease and a student from the School donated her prize money from the State Kalolsavam 2014 for providing medical support to a fellow student.
