From The President
Dear Neighbors,
Although you’re reading this message in mid-October, the deadline for my contribution was
September 19th, just one week after assuming the responsibilities of president, so this message
will be short and sweet. I had to send this into the printer before Isabella had the opportunity to
proof my work (as she does for all my novels) so if there’s a typo … please be kind.
The first week was a blur. There were many items for me to come up to speed on, and there were
small fires that needed to be put out (Not to worry. I’m speaking figuratively).
Norman Schwartz and I had a sit down meeting with Pat Dill to discuss the ongoing issues we
have with Club Corp. A hold-their-feet-to-the-fire-follow-up-meeting is scheduled for early next
month and I’ll report on our progress at the October open meeting.

Some of you may have read the Newsday article of September 13th in which it was mentioned that
a portion of the hazardous waste from Roberto Clemente Park is planned to be dumped in the
Hauppauge landfill, which is next door to us on Blydenburgh Road. The issue is currently before
the DEC, the Department of Environmental Conservation. We are already preparing a strategy
to prevent the DEC from dumping the waste in our backyard. I believe I can speak for all of us in
saying that this is a top priority and that the dumping must unequivocally be prevented.

I’d like to thank each and every one of you for offering me your support. The board’s job is not an
easy one and there are many challenges before us. With your backing I know we will be successful.

HOA Board Changes
Dear Neighbors: I trust this correspondence finds you well.
I’m writing to bring you up to date on recent HOA board changes.
As many of you already know, Michael Kampel will be leaving the community shortly and has stepped down as board
president. We would like to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the Hamlet, and wish him and his family well
as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
The board has elected me as Michael’s successor, and I will do everything in my power to do justice to the position. Isabella
and I feel blessed to be a part of the Hamlet community and have made many friends in the five years we have lived here.
Hamlet Windwatch is a wonderful community and I’m happy to play a small role in its continued growth and well being Following the community’s sentiment, the board interviewed and voted to add Stuart Rachlin as a board member. As you
may recall, Stuart was the only community member to run for a board seat in the June election. He possesses many strong
qualities, which will add immeasurably to the board’s effectiveness and the community’s prosperity. Larry Kantor and Paul Kline subsequently resigned their board positions. We thank them for their past service and wish
them well. Those positions will be filled in the near future.
A “State of the Community” meeting will be held at the clubhouse on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. so that Hamlet
residents can learn more about the board’s agenda. As the new president, I’d like everyone to embrace the spirit of openness
and oneness, residents and board members alike united and committed to a common purpose. We share the same values
and wish only for the community’s success. Toward that end, let’s look at this moment in time as an opportunity for a new
beginning.
Sincerely,
Larry Kelter

History of Halloween
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October
31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows'
Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve.
Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires,
costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jacko-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of
the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century.
Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late
twentieth century including Ireland, the United States,
Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of
Australia and New Zealand.
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival
known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of
Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season
in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient
pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The
ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries
between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped
and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc
such as sickness or damaged crops.
The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is
believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which
attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of
the history of Halloween.
Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic
the evil spirits or appease them.
Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around
Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in
costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the
question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat"
is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property
if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main
traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected
that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should
purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.
The history of Halloween has evolved. The activity is
popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland,
Canada, and due to increased American cultural influence
in recent years, imported through exposure to US television
and other media, trick-or-treating has started to occur
among children in many parts of Europe, and in the Saudi
Aramco camps of Dhahran, Akaria compounds and Ras
Tanura in Saudi Arabia. The most significant growth and
resistance is in the United Kingdom, where the police have
threatened to prosecute parents who allow their children to
carry out the "trick" element. In continental Europe, where
the commerce-driven importation of Halloween is seen with
14 HAMLET AT WIND WATCH | OCTOBER 2014
more skepticism, numerous destructive or illegal "tricks"
and police warnings have further raised suspicion about this
game and Halloween in general.
In Ohio, Iowa, and Massachusetts, the night designated
for Trick-or-treating is often referred to as Beggars Night.
Part of the history of Halloween is Halloween costumes.
The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to
door for treats on holidays goes back to the Middle Ages, and
includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles
the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor folk would
go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving
food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day
(November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain, although
similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as
far south as Italy. Shakespeare mentions the practice in his
comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1593), when Speed
accuses his master of "puling [whimpering, whining], like a
beggar at Hallowmas."
Yet there is no evidence that souling was ever practiced
in America, and trick-or-treating may have developed in
America independent of any Irish or British antecedent.
There is little primary Halloween history documentation of
masking or costuming on Halloween in Ireland, the UK, or
America before 1900. The earliest known reference to ritual
begging on Halloween in English speaking North America
occurs in 1911, when a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario,
near the border of upstate New York, reported that it was
normal for the smaller children to go street guising (see
below) on Halloween between 6 and 7 p.m., visiting shops
and neighbors to be rewarded with nuts and candies for
their rhymes and songs.
Another isolated reference appears, place unknown,
in 1915, with a third reference in Chicago in 1920. The
thousands of Halloween postcards produced between
the turn of the 20th century and the 1920s commonly
show children but do not depict trick-or-treating. Ruth
Edna Kelley, in her 1919 history of the holiday, The Book
of Hallowe'en, makes no mention of such a custom in the
chapter "Hallowe'en in America." It does not seem to have
become a widespread practice until the 1930s, with the
earliest known uses in print of the term "trick or treat"
appearing in 1934, and the first use in a national publication
occurring in 1939. Thus, although a quarter million ScotsIrish immigrated to America between 1717 and 1770, the
Irish Potato Famine brought almost a million immigrants
in 1845-1849, and British and Irish immigration to America
peaked in the 1880s, ritualized begging on Halloween was
virtually unknown in America until generations later.

Social Committee News
October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came—The
Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The
Sunshine spread a carpet, And everything was grand, Miss
Weather led the dancing, Professor Wind the band.
The Chestnuts came in yellow, The Oaks in crimson dressed;
The lovely Misses Maple In scarlet looked their best; All
balanced to their partners, And gaily fluttered by; The sight
was like a rainbow
New fallen from the sky.
Then, in the rustic hollow, At hide-and-seek they played, The
party closed at sundown, And everybody stayed. Professor
Wind played louder; They flew along the ground; And then
the party ended in jolly "hands around."
---George Cooper
October is here and the Social Committee is working
feverishly on many events.
Labor Day weekend was unexpectedly beautiful. Ice cream
pops and cones were served and enjoyed by all.
Pizza Night on September 17th was a huge success with about
160 people attending. It was an easygoing, simple night. The
salad bar was great as usual, the pizza was excellent, and the
Italian desserts brought back memories of days of old. Chef
Anthony, Kim, and Erin did a great job! Thank you Rose
Lingvall for discovering Carmelo, the Pizza Dude and telling
me to go listen to him. . He was a great find and entertainer.
Everyone enjoyed listening and singing along with him.
Many of us reminisced to the tunes. Much appreciation to
Club Corp for providing the entertainment for us. Lynn
Goodman and Barbara Hessel turned the ballroom into
“Our Italian Restaurant” including red gingham table clothes
and “a bottle of red, a bottle of white” candleholders. What
a warm and friendly atmosphere there was with everyone
mingling. Kudos to the staff and all involved.
Zumba has returned to the clubhouse ballroom. The cost is
$10 per person per class. As of now, Wednesday and Sunday
classes are at 9:30.
Many new families are moving into our wonderful
community. A Newcomers’ Meet-and-Greet is planned for
October 24th for the people who have moved in this year.
Annette and Ed Regan have been gracious enough to open
up their home to us so that the new people can meet each
other and members of some of our committees. If you are
new and haven’t received an invitation, please contact Lynn
Goodman at ‪[email protected]‪ or 516 672 0846.
16 HAMLET AT WIND WATCH | OCTOBER 2014
Lynn and Sylvia Cooper have done a great job welcoming
the newbies!
On Sunday, October 26th, from 1-4, please have your treats
ready for the trick-or-treaters in the development. Invite
your grandchildren and friends to join us. Please cut out the
page with the picture of the jack ‘o lantern on it and attach it
to your garage door to let the “little ones” know that they are
welcome to ring the bell to get goodies.
The clubhouse will be preparing a new buffet for us on
Wednesday, October 29th. It should be a hauntingly fun
night.
The Thanksgiving food drive is Wednesday, November 5th.
Please be generous and leave nonperishable food items in
double paper bags outside your garage by 8 a.m. We have
had a great response in the past. Let’s make this the best so
far for those in need. Food will be donated to Long Island
Cares. Any men or women available to help collect, please
contact Joy Ellentuck at 663-3256.
The holidays will be upon us before you know it! Please drop
off your checks for the holiday party to Brenda Mollins at
20 Windwatch Drive no later than November 7th. We hope
that the snowbirds that are coming in for Thanksgiving will
arrive the weekend before so that they can enjoy the party
also. It will be on Saturday, November 22nd from 7 until
midnight. The Social Committee is happy to report that an
exquisite affair is planned including a full cocktail hour, sit
down dinner, dessert, open bar, and of course a great DJ!
The cost is $75 pp. If you were there last year, you know what
a great celebration it was! If you have any questions, please
contact Brenda at [email protected] or 630-1000.
We have been discussing a trip to a Broadway show including
transportation or a going to a local show. Details to follow.
A winter dine-around is being planned for January. Details
to follow.
I’m happy to report that the Social Committee has some new
members. Feel free to pop into a meeting even if you are not
a part of the committee. New ideas are always welcome.
I hope that everyone who celebrates the Jewish New Year
had a happy and healthy one!
Happy Halloween.

Haunted Places on Long
Island
tallest lighthouse. Tales of shadowy figures, ghostly laughs,
otherworldly banging noises and legends of hefty doors
opening and closing surround the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Raynham Hall Museum, Oyster Bay, NY
Reid's Ice Cream Factory in Blue Point was abandoned in
the 1920s and then demolished in 2003. From reports of
the ghostly screams of a murdered woman to the ghostly
giggles of a departed boy, legends swirled around the longabandoned Reid's Ice Cream Factory. Houses were later built
on the former factory property.... but are the ghosts still
there?
Dating back to the 1700s, this historic house in Oyster Bay,
NY, was originally built by a well-to-do merchant and is now
a museum open to the public. Years ago a man was hired to
take care of the grounds and sleep in the house. After his first
night there, he was asked how he slept. He answered that it
was quiet, but that the "people upstairs" made quite a racket.
Note to fans of ghost stories: no one lived upstairs. Other
stories talk about visitations by a young woman in a bridal
gown - supposedly the ghost of a former resident who was
abandoned by her lover while waiting for him at the altar.
Fire Island Lighthouse, NY
The stately Fire Island Lighthouse dates back to the 1800s
and is a familiar landmark on the barrier island where it
stands 167 feet above sea level and can be seen more than 20
miles away. On the National Register of Historic Places since
1974, the decommissioned lighthouse is open to visitors, and
those in good physical shape can walk the 157 steep steps
and two small ladders for a view from the top of New York's

Kings Park Psychiatric Facility
According to the Long Island Paranormal Investigators, the
Kings Park Psychiatric Facility is one of the 10 most haunted
places on Long Island. According to reports that you may
or may not believe, passersby have heard screams and other
noises from the long-abandoned building in Suffolk County.
Whether you get chills up and down your spine when you
hear about ghostly visitations, or you scoff at these stories,
you can read more and see photos of some other supposedly
haunted places on Long Island at the Long Island Paranormal
Investigators website.
