october 2015 HOA Board of Directors Larry Kelter President Norman Schwartz Vice President Steve Abramson Treasurer Frank Danisi Director John Albanese Director Paula Rosenberg Director Stuart Rachlin Secretary Contact HOA HOA VOICE 631.273.8044 The WINDWATCHER Letter from the President - Larry Kelter October is the official month of pizza, seafood, cookies, chili, popcorn, sausage, and dessert, so if I go overboard and indulge all of these yummy food days (as I normally do), I’ll need Lap-Band surgery before Thanksgiving. It’s also National Cholesterol Month, so I’m feeling terribly conflicted. October is best known for Halloween, so hone your pumpkin-carving skills and let’s see those jack-o’lanterns front and center. Halloween is all about the kids (big and small) so please be generous when those ghouls and superheroes come a-knocking at your door. If you’re headed south for the winter, please remember to have Creative Irrigation shut down your sprinkler system before you leave. Equally important: sprinklers should be turned on for the season no later than April 30th. If you’re planning to return later than April 30th, please make arrangements for Creative to be allowed into your home so that they can turn on your system before you get back. It’s also a prudent idea to call and set up an appointment in advance of your return. Creative gets swamped during the spring opening season and will need time to get to you. If you’re getting home in May, please don’t expect to call and have them show up immediately. It wont’ happen! We really had our hands full this summer because systems that were not turned on early enough led to stressed lawns and brown, fungus-ridden grass. Please remember that watering the lawn is the homeowner’s responsibility, not the HOA’s, and we will not repair lawns damaged from neglect. I’m sorry to have to make a point of this but it’s unfair for other homeowners to bear the cost of lawns ruined through individual homeowner neglect. HOA FAX 631.273.8214 As you’ve probably all heard, there is a right-of-way issue that’s put a temporary halt on the FIOS installation. We believe the issue has been resolved and are waiting for Verizon’s decision-makers to concur. If all goes well, the installation should resume in the next couple of weeks. hamletatwindwatch.com Our arborist did a great job manicuring the Bradford pear trees. They’re neat, shaped, and allow more light in. They should be healthier, last longer, and succumb to far less damage from high winds and snow accumulations. Fairfield Management 631.499.6660 Ext. 261 or 205 Whether you’re apple picking, leaf-peeping, hay-riding, or just sitting on your butt and watching Sunday football, have a great month and I’ll see you before the turkey gets the ax. That’s it for now. See you next month. The story is narrated on the island St. Thomas, with Rachel Pomei as the central character. She soon becomes the mother of Camille Pissarro, known as the father of impressionism. Rachel’s story begins with an arranged marriage thru widowhood and eventually to the love of her life. It is interwoven into a fantastic story of love, heartache and finally reunion. While Camille Pissarro was the historical figure the author centered upon, all of the characters were compelling and detailed. Ms. Hoffman takes us on a journey into her characters’ lives with descriptions of St. Thomas that are even more magical than colors in a painting. As in The Dovekeepers, she has the thread of Jewish history and mysticism throughout the book, and gives us a lesson in Jewish way of life on the island. The Marriage of Opposites was both picturesque and informative. Alice Hoffman has a way of compelling us to keep turning the pages. The members of the Book Club all agree, a must read! The next book will be Belle Cora by Phillip Margulies. The meeting will be at Joy Ellentuck’s home on October 1 at 8:00pm. Sandy’s stars: UNIQUE DINETTE NY Serving Our Community Since 1990! In the US, pumpkin season usually is at the same time as Halloween and Thanksgiving. The word "pumpkin" comes from the Greek “large melon” or "pepon" which was later changed by the English into "pumpkin". It is an orange fruit that has seeds and flesh that is edible. Pumpkins are used to make soup, desserts and breads. Carving pumpkins for Halloween into jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland hundreds of years ago; in Ireland, they used turnips and potatoes but, when they immigrated to America, pumpkins were used. Largest pumpkin ever baked was in 2005 at 2,025 lbs. Pumpkins are low in calories, fat, & sodium, yet high in fiber. They are a good source of Vitamin A & B, protein and iron. The heaviest pumpkin recorded weighed 1810 lbs 8 oz in Minnesota, October 2010. Pumpkin seeds should be planted between the last week of May and the middle of June. They take 90-120 days to grow and the pumpkins are picked in October when they are bright orange. The seeds can be saved to grow new pumpkins next year. They can be used as centerpieces in Halloween decorations and great pies for Thanksgiving. Why do people do this, as it invites unwanted entry? Is letting their cat out a real answer, is there any other explanation? How about the fact that two residents in the community own submachine guns, that they both keep them loaded under their beds, and another resident is a convicted child molester, and a third resident is an expert on easements thereby keeping Verizon out. I'd love to write on all of this, and many of you might believe what I write; however, should you??? Can you rely on what is written in a local newspaper or in any paper for that matter? The answer is clear. The Daily News once published the wrong winning numbers in a contest they ran. Thousands of people thought that they'd won millions of dollars. Many sued. Guess what: the Court said in an eloquent decision that a newspaper is NOT, under any obligation, to tell the truth! But, the lawyer argued, people trust what is written, and it is deceptive to put forth untruths in a paper that people trust. Too bad, said the Judge - reliance on what is in a printed newspaper is misplaced. No duty of the paper to tell the truth. As such, I opine that you must always question what you read. There is no obligation to tell you the truth. I was once quoted in The New York Post, and they never called me? our Comedy Night was a HIT! With that in mind, we share the following winterizing tips that we've found from various sources: • • • • • make sure that your plumbing isn't vulnerable to the cycles of freezing and thawing that can cause pipes to burst. Shut off the supply of water to outdoor spigots and have your sprinklers blown out. cover your outdoor air conditioning units caulk cracks and install weather stripping where appropriate check your carbon monoxide detectors and replace old batteries use plastic wrap or bubble wrap on the inside of drafty windows if your water heater is in a cold area (e.g. utility closet in garage), consider wrapping it with an insulating blanket made for that purpose Here Are Tips Especially For Snowbirds: • • • • • • • • • • • empty the dishwasher and leave the door open run your washing machine on HOT with a commercial washing machine cleaner (Tide has one) the night before leaving and leave the lid open when you leave drain the hot water heater set the heat to low (60 is safe) store your valuables in a store-bought, fireproof safe if you have a telephone landline, shut off the ringer if you have an answering machine, do NOT change to an away message unplug unnecessary lights & appliances - fixtures that are plugged in use electricity --- even a clock radio or cable box draws power. leave a few lights on in your house - or schedule them to go on & off by timer (plug-in or in conjunction with alarm system), with different on and off times for different days of the week disconnect the cable from your TV if you have call forwarding, have your home phone forwarded to your cell phone Wishing you all a healthy and safe winter --- wherever you spend it! Notes From Your Board We have recently witnessed a huge movement on the part of Club Corp. regarding our needs; our increasing presence at the BBQ nights is representative of our increasing desire to be a part of this wonderful community! If you have received a letter indicating that you are in violation of a House Rule, you have thirty (30) days in which to comply before incurring a fine; we urge you to tend to the violation before putting us in the position of having to be the HOA "Police". Where has the time gone? The food at the BBQ on August 26th was just as flavorful as the first one. Word had traveled and, as a result, 180 people attended. Oh, what a night! The weather on Labor Day was great and the pool area had standing room only. Delicious snacks were served compliments of Club Corp. Zeppole, hot pretzels, ice cream, lemonade and iced tea were some of the goodies enjoyed by all. The ballroom was transformed into a casino on September 11th. We walked the red carpet to enter and were able to take pictures with Elvis. Annette Regan and Mary Bencivenga didn’t hold back preparing for the event. Thank you for doing such a great job! What a feeling to walk into a room and get handed $1000 funny money to gamble with. The dealers were professional and very helpful teaching the novices what to do. Raffle tickets were “bought“ at the end of the night with our winnings. The date of Pizza Night has been changed. The new date is October 6th from 6-9:30 p.m. Carmelo the Pizza Dude will serenade us with his great voice. Call 232-9850 for reservations. Hamletonians have been thrilled to see trick-or-treaters around the neighborhood on our special Halloween Day. Please have your treats ready for them on Sunday, October 25th, from 1-4. Bring your grandchildren and friends to join in the excitement. Attach the enclosed jack ‘o lantern to your garage door to let the “little ones” know they are welcome to ring the bell to get goodies. The Thanksgiving food drive is Wednesday, October 28th. Please be generous and leave nonperishable food items in double paper bags outside your garage door by 8 a.m. We have had a great response in the past. Let’s make this the best so far for those in need. Food will be donated to Long Island Cares. Any questions, please contact Joy Ellentuck at 663-3256. Halloween is always a fun time. This year we will be hosting a hauntingly enjoyable night of thrills and chills! Party with your adult fiends! (No, that’s not a typo.) It will be right on Halloween, Saturday, October 31st from 7-11 p.m. in the ballroom. Costumes are preferred but not mandatory. We will have prizes for the best costumes in different categories. See the enclosed flyer for more details. Cash bar is available. The prices are as follows: beer $5, wine $8, premium mixed drinks $9, top shelf mixed drinks $10, rocks and martinis $12. Bracelets will also be for sale for unlimited alcoholic beverages for $15 per person for premium liquor and $20 per person for top shelf. The purpose of having years of wisdom is being able to impart it. Like the lesson of staying fit. Life, at times, can get tough. It takes good health to enjoy it. That’s what I tell my great-grandson when he comes to see me at The Bristal. We invent fitness games here in the gym. We go for long walks and talk. He chases my shots on the putting green. Maybe he’d rather play video games, I know, but something’s sinking in. You should see us doing tai chi. Exceptional lives. Extraordinary living. As in the past several years, the budget is $75,000. As of the end of August, the remaining funds in the snow reserve is a little over $31,000 compared to $46,650 in 2014. Let’s hope for the best. If we are lucky enough to have funds remaining in the snow reserve, those funds will be used to offset our 2016 operating expenses or added to our capital reserve as in the past. Our operating account stands at approximately $145,000 with four more months of common charges to be collected representing an additional $280,000 - more than sufficient to cover expenses through the end of the year. The budget for 2016 will be presented to the board at our December meeting and sent to Hamlet owners shortly thereafter. 171 Wind Watch Drive 342-1836 Advertising Space Available! 631-223-2029 / 5starnewsletters.com / [email protected] By the time you receive this newsletter or shortly thereafter the third quarter financials will have been posted on the HOA website.
