We had 2 students place at the state science fair and be invited to national competitions. Our FCCLA, Skills, DECA, and FBLA programs all had several students place at competitions and are going on to the next level. In addition, our THS Tree Hugger team placed at the state Envirothon competition, and we had two students score a perfect 36 on their ACT tests. Our theater arts department is presenting its spring musical, Peter Pan, with many talented students involved and highlighted. Our band was guests at the TEMA conference and were recognized and performed as our own Dr. Lawson was selected at last year’s TEMA Director of Schools of the year. In athletic news, our wrestling team had several members compete at the state level, our girls’ basketball team won the District title, and boys’ soccer, baseball, and THS track are currently in full swing. We have also now successfully completed our third full year as a Renaissance school. Wildcat Renaissance, which is really more of a concept than a program, focuses on 1) recognizing and rewarding students for meeting various achievement goals in the areas of academics, attendance, and behavior, 2) building positive school culture and climate, and 3) building connections within the student body and with all school stakeholders. With the varying criteria, every student in the school has the opportunity to meet one or more of the goals and be recognized. Wildcat Renaissance operates under a card system: Wildcat Card for all A’s; Black Card for all A’s and B’s; Silver Card – improvement of quarterly GPA by .5 pt or more from one nine weeks to the next; and White Card for no absences, no tardies, and no office referrals for one nine weeks. Each card has its own unique set of school-wide incentives tied to it, and they also privy students to classroom level perks of each teacher’s choosing. Finally, Wildcat Renaissance Card holders enjoy an exclusive list of discounts on food, retail and services with area business partners. Students also have the opportunity to benefit from cash drawing prizes at semester Awards Ceremony and weekly drawings to feature Students of the Week. For some students, this is recognition and a “pat on the back” for already meeting one or more of the cards’ criteria. For others, it serves as incentive to improve in one or more areas to receive the recognition and rewards that Wildcat Renaissance has to offer. “We want all students to have a sense of community within their school, a common bond, something for everyone to belong to and be excited about – Renaissance encompasses that and helps students connect with each other and to their school and community”, says Mrs. Duncan. “We want all students to know we see their efforts, we appreciate them, and that, as a community, we care about the successes, big or small, of every student.” We would like to say a very big thank you to all our Chamber CEO partners and the following businesses for continuing to support the Renaissance program as Corporate Sponsors: Housholder & Artman, First Vision Bank, Southern Community Bank, Brindley & Sons Construction, Stan McNabb Auto Group, and E.B. Thoma & Sons Insurance. There are also many area businesses that have offered exclusive discounts to cardholders. MEMBERS ONLY • MEMBERS ONLY • MEMBERS ONLY Horner Rausch Optical 211 E.
