ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 28 Agenda © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 29 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Electronic Data Interchange • Leverage EDI to drive efficiency – Growth in volume every year for more than 20 years • Process over 1M EDI documents every year • EDI invoices are used by Accounts Payable to reconcile and pay our suppliers for more than 90% of Wakefern Purchase Orders • Collaborative programs are made possible with EDI transactions – Vendor Managed Inventory (852 & 855) – Cross‐dock programs (850 & 856) • EDI Contact: [email protected] © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 30 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Global Data Synchronization • Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®) is the electronic transfer of standardized product and location information – Continuous synchronization of that data for the life of an item – Mandatory data elements (GTINs, Product Types and Product Descriptions) – Attributes required in the supply chain (e.g. dimensions, weight and net content) – Basic product marketing information (e.g. features, benefits) © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 31 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Global Data Synchronization • Wakefern’s product information solution is an integration of Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) with our Item Portal application – High dependence on GDSN publications to feed item data into the item portal – Higher integration means less work for the sales representative – Sales Rep does not need to be an ‘expert’ in GDSN © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 32 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Global Data Synchronization • Provide a systemic solution to the Wakefern New Item process – Minimize the ‘manual’ transfer of item data – Streamline the processing of New Items with a ‘workflow’ process • Reduce set‐up time to speed execution at retail – Incorporate audit controls into the application – Build an ‘intelligent’ application to help validate item data before it is submitted into the Wakefern item database © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 33 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Global Data Synchronization • Wakefern interrogates the Trade Item Unit Descriptor to drive our new item process –Developed a set of rules for each descriptor to drive efficiency and accuracy –Some Trade Item descriptors are interpreted to have conditional attributes needed for item set up • MX – Mixed Mod containing multiple CA items • DS – Display containing one or more EA items • PL – Pallet containing one EA or CA item © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 34 GS1 Standards Solutions at Wakefern Global Data Synchronization • Manufacturers use different unit descriptors for the same product packaging level – Manufacturer #1 chose MX – Manufacturer #2 chose DS • Wakefern and other retailers have difficulty processing many item hierarchies containing MX, DS, PK or AP – Can not consistently process item data – Disruption to the new item process • With over 3,200 new displays/mix mods introduced in 2014, this has created numerous problems and delays in their processing © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 35 Building for the Future Major Release 3.1 • Major Release 3.1 is intended to allow all industries to respond to changes in our market – Support regulatory compliance requirements – Improve the product information that is available to our consumer – Enable future changes to the GDSN with greater speed © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 36 Building for the Future Major Release 3.1 • The new release will provide greater flexibility for each industry to leverage the GDSN to meet their needs – Changes and updates can be driven by each sectors’ business needs © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 37 Building for the Future Major Release 3.1 • The combination of ‘PK’ (Trade Item Descriptor) and the ‘specialItemCode’ attribute will need to be used to communicate this information (re ‘AP’ (Assorted Pack) ) • ‘quantityOfChildren’ can indicate the number of unique next lower level items that are contained, no longer relying on the ‘AP’, ‘DS’ or ‘MX’ • ‘MX’ and ‘DS’ have been saved from deletion • New Attributes, – ‘IsTradeItemADisplayUnit’ and ‘displayTypeCode’ can communicate display information – Indicates if the item is a display and the type of display © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 38 Building for the Future Major Release 3.1 • After the release, our New Item process will incorporate the ‘IsTradeItemADisplayUnit’ to help determine if an item is a display – If TRUE, the ‘displayTypeCode’ will declare the type of display Value SDR FDR Code Name Shelf Display Ready Packaging Floor Display Ready Packaging SND Shelf NonAssembled Display Packaging FND Floor NonAssembled Display Packaging UNS Unspecified © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 39 Building for the Future Major Release 3.1 • Steps we are planning in support of the Major Release: – Identify changes to data attributes currently captured – Update XML messages to continue processing GDSN publications (Initial Load, New Item, Change) – Support all of the required changes to our Data Sync Item Database • Replace deleted data attributes • Map new data attributes – Modify business rules to support the processing of all New Items (Displays, Assorted Packs, Mod Pallets) © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 40 Building for the Future Data Attribute Expansion • Expand the number of attributes that we are able to capture and process through the GDSN – Food and Beverage Extension • Nutritional, Ingredients and Allergens – Chemical Ingredients – Preliminary Trade Item © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 41 Building for the Future Data Attribute Expansion • Leverage the Image attributes (externalFileLink) in the Marketing extension to improve availability – Satisfy consumer demand – Merchandising – Advertising © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 42 Building for the Future Data Attribute Explosion • Support the Preliminary Trade Item attribute (preliminaryItemStatusCode) – Product information can now be identified as preliminary, and subject to change • How will suppliers use this attribute and what is the timing for getting final data? – Suppliers need to understand that by the time of first ship… • Planograms have been completed • Print advertising may already be complete • Shelf Labels may have been printed © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 43 Building for the Future Data Quality • The tremendous benefit derived from Global Data Synchronization comes from the sharing of data from one to many –Data must be standards based –Data must be complete and accurate • Data shared outside of these norms creates major business interruptions and higher operating costs © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 44 Building for the Future Data Quality • Wakefern is forced to implement data quality processes to eliminate bad data –Perform Physical Audits –Constant Data Validation –Measure Accuracy and Provide Feedback © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 45 Building for the Future Data Quality • New Item Validations – Brand, Description, Net Content, UPC • Measure and validate all Case Dimensions and Weights for items received in all Wakefern facilities • Validate GS1 DataBar in Produce • Audit the contents of Shippers and Mixed Mods – Parent/Child Item GTINs – Child Item Quantities – UPC – Net Content © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 46 Building for the Future Data Quality • Common data quality issues – Incorrect Net Content data that create issues for our retail customers and violate state consumer protection laws – Inaccurate item descriptions and brand names – Major changes to the ingredients of edible products, particularly involving food allergens – Inaccurate product data affecting the storage, distribution and transportation of product – Missing data attributes © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 47 Data Quality Measures – Vendor Feedback Wakefern Vendor Scorecard • Critical aspect of our Data Quality process is to share results with our suppliers about the quality of their item data – Compliance with GDSN standards • GTIN Allocation Rules – Accuracy of key data attributes – Measure the effectiveness of the vendor’s synchronization process • Use of New Item publications • Overall synchronization rates © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 48 Wakefern Vendor Scorecard © 2015 GS1 US ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 49 Wakefern Vendor Scorecard • The Vendor Scorecard is designed to give the supplier access to their data – Information can be segregated for all items or new items – Information will
